Women should never RELY on the good behavior of men for their own safety and security. Ask yourself, if the men around me behave BADLY, how will I protect myself?
Whenever I see a story about a young woman going missing after a solo night out at a club or bar, I immediately think, "Yep, she's gonna turn up dead." She didn't live circumspectly, and women are vulnerable.
Here's a statistic for you. There are 5,000 men in Georgia who regularly pay for s3x with children. Understand that this is not a safe world. There are predators everywhere. Live accordingly.

I'm an army brat. Born & raised at Ft. Bragg & in good old Fatalville so I was raised to always have my head on a swivel. To always be highly aware of what was going on around me & who was near me. I can't remember ever entering a building without immediately looking around to find other exits. As kids we were taught to try to spot trouble before it started & get the hell out of Dodge. To walk with our heads up & with a purpose. To have our car or door keys out and ready to use well before we reached the car or the door. (BTW keys carried in your fist, so the ends come out right below your knuckles make an excellent weapon & I often carry mine that way when returning to my car.) To look back frequently to make sure no one is following us. To be aware of anyone who's paying you more attention than is normal. To have a clearly defined personal space & call out anyone who violates it the instant they do. And most importantly to never ever worry about offending someone or looking foolish by taking action if you feel uncomfortable or threatened in any way. Now I realize that to most people it might seem that living in that mindset is exhausting but it's become second nature. I do it without thinking about it. Never having lived any other way I have nothing to compare it to. It's just ingrained in me. I can say though that 99% of the people I encounter might as well have "Easy Victim" tattooed on their forehead mainly because of their lack of awareness & their incredibly slow, usually wrong, response when something does happen. You want to empower your girls? Train them to protect themselves. It's never too early or too late to start.

"The Gift of Fear" is a must-read for everyone, but especially women. We do not get the luxury of relaxing. I don't think there's such a thing as too cautious. I'd rather feel guilty for misjudging a man than put myself in harm because I lowered my guard. I have a few things that I don't do without my husband -- chief among them being going for walks by myself or going to stores in the evening. I'm not the most assertive person naturally, but simply being observant and aware can go a long way.

Side note: I definitely encourage people who have USCCA to look at their contract terms and agreements. It states that coverage will be denied if you are charged with a crime....yet many officers who aren't on your side may charge you with assault/murder/manslaughter if things don't happen to look right at the crime scene regardless of the circumstances. In this case, USCCA could deny your request for an attorney since you are technically charged with a crime or a "criminal use" of your firearm. In their terms that sort of use is not covered even if you have only been charged and not been to a hearing yet. I caution you to consult with your personal attorney and see, because my attorney definitely had to point these out to me. I now am looking into other insurances like Firearms Legal Protection and others.

I loved it when she said “Its my responsibility to keep myself safe.” Im the “crazy” gun guy in all of my friend groups and I can not get my friends to understand that their safety is their responsibility and should be taken seriously. I have friends that don’t know why I carry daily and I have friends who even 16 years into legal daily gun carrying can’t understand that I don’t shoot everyone I get in a disagreement with or everyone that cuts me off in traffic.

Just be careful not to blame the victim. Punish the attacker at least three times as hard as you tell the victim, "I told you so"/"you shouldn't have....." Make punishing the attacker the priority. Punish first, heal the victim, then train the victim to prevent future incidents.

I also shouldn’t have to wear a seatbelt, but I do. One morning on way to work some guy should not have run a stop sign, but he did. Without seatbelt rollover could have ended badly. With seatbelt, witnesses, insurance, “first” responders, and a friend willing to pick me up for work it turned into a nonevent. Shouldn’t need seatbelts, shouldn’t need to pay for insurance, police or firefighters - but we do because it is just common sense. Training and carrying a gun is easier and cheaper than those things and just as sensible.

@@Evergreen1400 Good for you for bucking the trend and being willing to defend yourself. Honestly, I'm always surprised by those folks who think that just because you carry, you're going to BLOW UP and use your gun at the least provocation. Honestly, I think this is projection on their part. When I think of those people owning a gun, I think, "YOU are the exact type of person that SHOULDN'T carry, if you're worried about losing your temper."

I try to teach my wife, daughters, sister in Laws, their daughters other family, friends and others to keep there eyes out of their phones, keep them on the look out for trouble and to keep their heads on swivel.
But most times it’s like trying to herd cats.
I try to teach them what to look out for and how to be safe but it’s hard to get them to do anything other than my oldest daughter that was in front line combat in the GWOT in Afghanistan and even she misses a lot of things sometimes.
That’s why if you made the vows to God the Father the son and the holy sprit that you were going to be there for your wife as a married man it’s your responsibility to be there to keep your eyes open and your head on a swivel looking for troubles to protect her from because they just don’t always seem to careful enough.
    Good luck with that.

Everything Mrs. War Poet said describes my wife. I’ve tried talking to her, using situations in the news to explain and even a few in our home town. Nothing. The “it won’t happen to me” attitude is deeply ingrained in her brain. She hasn’t even carried her weapon or light in months. I’m lost on how to combat this attitude of unpreparedness. She can’t even really fight. She grew up very sheltered. Our situations were different. I grew up fighting and know exactly what people think and how fast things can go sideways. She just doesn’t think anything will ever happen and I can’t seem to break through.

Perhaps nothing is more frustrating than a woman who discounts a questionable person as the "red flags" are going off in your own head regarding that very same person. Then, she chastises you for being concerned. At the other extreme, however, the downside to distrust is that the truly good man who wants to help the damsel in distress by walking her to her car, jumpstarting her battery, or helping her with heavy stuff, is treated like either a suspect or criminal to the point that one ultimately concludes, "Well, I'll never do THAT again. She's on her own."

Neo mags, can-can holsters, and flashbangs are popular choices. But also, I found it really helpful when somebody said no matter what you're always going to be somewhat uncomfortable. Carrying a gun is a lifestyle choice and you have to make certain sacrifices in order to enjoy that privilege. So I found it very helpful to also manage my expectations on what carrying a gun would be like. I hope that was succinct and helpful.

Wife and I both have read these books, "Gift of Fear and Protecting the Gift". Great books. Very eye opening. Also, being aware of the evil that humans are capable of and protecting against it is not the same thing as "living in fear".

Women are TOO skittish, though. I've had women act like I'm following them around the grocery store. I've literally had to go out of my way to avoid women in grocery stores when women look at me, first. When someone looks at you, instinctively, you look back. I've literally had to change my pattern of shopping in the grocery store because of this. I'm a very large man because I'm a former offensive linemen. How are people supposed to meet one another if everyone thinks men are murderers? This is NOT the world we want to be living in. We're going to have more single people and less families if everyone is afraid of men.

@@seneca1932 I know, brother. It's a tragedy. You can't build trust with anyone. I lost everything over an accusation. I lost my job, my home, my career and I've never been the same. I tried going into a new career and trouble kept following me around. Before this incident, I had never been without work OR I had never had a problem on the job. I feel like God turned His back on me. I'm a literal husk of the man I once was. It's a symptom of a larger disease and this nation is going to crumble because of it. It's happening all around us. Hey john , rebekha, im 31 i met my wife while i was runnig around and playing in the gutter.my father was a ranger 1st of the 75th. He brought me up with eyes wide open. He was a heavy reader and so am i. But i learned at a young age how to fight with a gun. Not just shoot. He also taught me the art of deception on a micro level( make ur self look really ready but when approached by a cocky human that meant no good make urself smile, even if its forced act placating and worried, they will close with most times without regard for their own safty, practice every day with ur tools and deploy them with ruthless speed and ferocity and the shock will give u room to do what u must usually haul ass but u must hurt him bad enough his buddy if any are around (cowards will travel in packs)dont want to follow. I taught all of this to my wife at age 20. She woke up one day when she had our lil girl in the car and i had to go to jail and fight for my freedom after defending my whole world from a methed out gang banger in a gas station parking lot. She stayed in the car with her tools and watched me use my tools. She understood but did not sleep well or wake up well for a long while after. Now she is 30 and the best. But she asked me to tell anyone who would listen that it will jar u if u live in a fantasy ur whole like and in moments u watch it stripped away till u see what is really there u can not go back after that. She had the gun i ended up going to my buck knife when he pulled out a lock with a bandana tied to it. I got hurt but she did what i needed her to. I could not have survived that let alone be standing when cops showed up if i had to worry about her and my baby.ladys if ur man can do work let him. Protect what is our weak spot. I knew that even if i died he would die before my wife let him touch her or lyla. That gave me room to operate without distraction or restriction.

This is so wonderful and very informative. Thankfully I’ve been been paranoid all my life so I’m consistently seeing threats everywhere.
Even so, please refrain from ever using the phrase “she was asking for it.” That phrase needs to die and for good reason. I also think we shouldn’t say it’s our responsibility to keep ourselves safe or that their is dual responsibility between us and the person committing the crime against us. You are never responsible for someone choosing to commit a crime. The only people who will see you as a target are the criminals. Someone who has no intention of hurting you will not see people as targets, just people.
It’s a good idea to be on alert and be aware of your surroundings and trust your gut, but never let anyone convince you that if someone hurts you that you are somehow responsible for the horrible thing THEY chose. You are not.

Also, get on the phone with them and keep them on the phone until i start and finish changing your tire." she did just that. hopefully she learned what to do if anyone else ever stops to help her. i had my phone in the car videoing the entire time. I have this exact conversation with my lady regularly, she’s not good at situational awareness and I was concerned about the increase of carjacking. I’ve convinced her to go to 1 ear bud when walking alone and I have her take our 2 large dogs with her when she’s running errands in the car. If someone approaches her car and a large dog sticks his head out the window, I think they will look for an easier target. Sometimes it’s baby steps.
