I've purchased at least 6 of these over the years on my 1998 s70. I have 2 (drivers side and rear driver side) and was about to order 2 more $$$$$$$. I just followed your video and like magic the drivers door is fixed.. Thank you!!
Robert, you are an absolute saviour! Volvo god I say! Whatever issue I run into, I know You have the fix for it! A thousand thanks and best wishes to you dear sir!
Thanks again Robert you saved me close to $400 today! I cut around the edge of the motor assembly cover with a razor before prying at it with a few different sized screwdrivers. It worked well and I managed to get two disassembled with almost no breakage.
THANK YOU! These are great and I really appreciate your time and effort in putting these together. You can tell you're passionate about both Volvos and helping others! Thank you, Robert!
Totally going to remove all of those thermal overload protectors. Its going to take a while but thanks for all the great video of the entire process. I much prefer going in with some knowledge rather than going in blind! Thanks again!
Awesome works, Robert! Volvo cars are some of the most serviceable, modular, and well built cars I’ve ever mechanic-ed on! On other makes, that motor would’ve been hardwired in. In the shop I help out at, whenever a car has some ridiculous, unfortunate or costly issue, I often retort “they should’ve bought a Volvo”. I love these cool little cars. They’re like clocks, but less tedious.
I did this repair on my doors, and it worked! Thank you! I also had a broken linkage, that locked one of my doors... So manufactured one out of fencing wire... ;P (which worked)
Thanks a lot Robert all the way from Malaysia! Just completed the repair of two of my latches. It worked great. Been stuck with this problem for more than 5 years
Awesome repair job Robert. I have two sticking locks. I will attempt the repair. I need to get a copper washer and cut it like you did. Thanks for the video
Robert, Thank you very much for making this video! It helped me fix the locks on or Volvo S70! I used a hair dryer to help loosen the motor case. I heat shrink gun might work better, but they get real hot. Your videos are great! Best Regards, Don
Worked a dream! Took less than an hour. I used a half inch wood chisel to remove the motor cover: popped off, undamaged, in seconds. On the driver's door lock I had to put the key in the lock to align the lock mechanism. Used a strand of wire from a battery cable in an 's' shape to replace the thermal switch - quick and easy and worked fine.

My Saab had those things. Fortunately the motors never had a problem but I did have to change the wipers and they cost $20 a piece. And the only place I could find them was at my local Saab dealer.
I'm sure I could've found them somewhere else for less. I didn't think to order them at the time. Honestly Saab parts are expensive pretty much anywhere, and now that they're bankrupt it's going to be almost impossible to find them.
Thanks, this helped me fix this problem! Word of advice. Make sure you connect the cable harnesses to the lock in the correct way. I accidently switched them and burned through two fuses. 😊
@@RobertDIY not mine, they were identical but had different colors, black and Grey. Also I had some kind of aluminum plate between the lock and the door that you didn't have in your video. Great video as usual. You wouldn't happen to know where to find a replacement motor should anything go wrong with it while I try to break into it? I'm having a hard time bending those tabs back in order to replace the thermal switch. Thanks for all your experience
Hi, Robert. I enjoy your videos. I can see the thermal protection device becoming over-sensitive after years of use (circuit breakers can do that also), but is there any chance that the motors are heating up due to dried up lubricants or something. If the mechanism is no longer moving freely, the excessive current could heat the motors up. Just a thought.
Okay, I believe you, Robert. I used to work with x-ray machines in hospitals that have a lot of moving parts that were connected to motors. One machine had to transport a loaded film cassette quickly into the radiation field to take an x-ray. There were two circuit breakers, one for each direction. These would eventually become overly sensitive and trip when they shouldn't. You could spend all day trying to find a fault in the system that was blowing the breakers, but it was the breakers themselves that were bad. They also protected the circuit by sensing heat (due to current through a resistance). My locks are sticking in the V70 that I just bought, so I was wishfully thinking. I don't mind the mechanical stuff, but I hate dealing with door panels! ;-)
I found that the (physical) key would not unlock my old V70 when the battery had died. After getting the car unlocked I was able to remove the door panel and lock assembly, thanks to your video. As it turns out, the rotating lock actuator pin wasn't inserted into its receptable on the lock assembly. An easy fix after watching these instructiond. Hi Robert! I have a 94 850 that has a few door lock actuators on the fritz. I opened up on today and tested the motor and it seemed to be running OK, also tested with the 9v plugged in to the two wires in the wiring harness which was also OK. For some reason, the motor doesn't function when plugged into the vehicle. Windows work as does the trim light on the door, and no obvious damage to the harness. I pulled the #6 fuse which looked OK and my last bet Is the Door lock relay under the dash. Any chance that it could be busted even though 2/4 locks work?
Hi Robert, Yep, my 99 V70 has this problem too. I was looking for an actuator at the salvage yard. Never would have imagined this may be the source of the problem. I do not have a remote key, but it may at one time. My passenger door button goes down when I hit the lock button, but you can actually still open it from outside. It won't pop back up when I hit the unlock button. Thanks again!!
Hey Robert, i'm having trouble getting the rubber knob into that plastic piece at 15:22-15:58. That plastic piece in my car seems to be slightly too far away and as a result i'm not able to push that knob into the plastic piece no matter what angle i use or how hard i push. The door im having trouble with us the front passenger if that helps. Let me know if you know anything about that and thanks in advance if you respond! ps: your content is super helpful as a volvo s70 owner and you've definitely earned my subscription, keep up the great work!
It is a pain in the butt. I usually put the latch into the door just below that catch, then pivot the latch up into the proper position. Then I pull the outside handle in and out to get the locking pin into it's hole.
Hey Robert I have a question, I'm looking for the open and close wires of the central locking, do you know what colors they are and where I can find them?
Hello Robert. I have a Volvo 1998 S70 and need some advice on parts, I need a gear stick and that item is super expensive. I was thinking of pick and pulling some parts. My question is how can I find a savage yard that has my make and model? I live in Albany GA.
I usually open up my Google maps app and type in pool and pay salvage yard. Then I look at the results for the one that say Pick-n-Pull U-Pull pull and pay stuff like that. Then you can go to their website and look at their inventory.
rbt i did figure this out with the latch coming up into position im holding the threaded rod out towards outside skin of the door and then pushed it onto the keeper once the lock is in position. thanks for the video
Great video Robert. My driver latch functions properly electrically but latch part that grabs body holder to keep dooor shut has something internally sticking so door will not latch properly (latch does not engage. if I pull door handle and release from fully extended (so door handle kinda slams back) something in mechanism clicks and door will close shut as it should. Do you think this can be fixed with lubricating something in mechanism? Thank you for advice. All your videos helpful.

Nice job! One question - I have a 2011 C70. The driver's door did all the weird stuff - like unlocking and opening itself while on the highway and then recently the driver's do inside handle stopped opening the door. The cable is still attached and is pulling so I assume that it is something in the latch. Should I just replace the latch or do you think I could repair it?
Not sure. It should only open mechanically so there may be something broken internally. You didn't wash the vehicle in cold weather where it could have gotten wet and froze up?
Robert, Is there anything special when working on driver door with the only keyhole on car besides crawling thru trunk if things go kablewy? Is the key lock area separate from the latch mechanism??
What if the sensor/switch for the light has malfunctioned? Is there a way to bypass that switch? My passenger door never thinks it's shut even though it is. Slamming it works, but I have to slam it hard enough to wake the dead. I don't need the lights to come on when that door is opened.
What if the interior door handle is the only one that opens the door? Like the exterior handle doesnt open the door when its unlocked. Does this issue correlate with the thermal switch?
Hi Robert, my 2000 S70 has working motors but the passenger latch doesn't lock allowing the door to open whether it's locked or unlocked. Any help appreciated
Hi Robert I was having the problem with the front passenger door lock. I followed your fix with a piece of copper wire but now it locks when I press unlock and when I press lock it does nothing. I checked with the plastic cog removed and clicked the remote fob and the motor spins only when I press the unlock button on the key fob. When I click the lock button the motor doesn't spin. Any ideas?
Thank you My problem is a bit different. The motor works and the lock button goes up and down but the door does not actually lock. Click button up then click button down but the door will always open from the outside. I'm stumped on that one.
I love my car.....I love my car.....I love my car.....I love my car.....I love my car..... BUT!!!! I HATE these gd pdl's! Otherwise, a relatively simple car. Thanks for this vid btw.
@@RobertDIY Darn! we bought a second assembly from the junk yard before we watched your video, and my husband repaired the motors on bot of them, but neither will lock, even though the motor(s) now work. Is there a way to repair the latch?
Hi Robert, my 2008 Volvo XC70 inside driver side handle doesn't open the door. So I must roll down the window and open the door from the outside. I need to fix or replace the inside door handle. So how do I take off the door panel for me to take off the handle to see what part is broken or came loose. The power switch to lock and unlock the doors works normal. When I'm rolling down the window to open the door from the outside, some times the window goes down very slow, not normal speed.
Robert Jackson Hi Robert, I really do not know. I have never removed a door panel from a vehicle that new. Maybe this will help you. - ruclips.net/video/8sf9Z0Uvx9E/видео.html
Do you know how to repair the switch inside these locks, that recognize whether door is open or closed? When this switch wears out in any of the doorlocks, the footlight/doorlight will not turn off even though the door is closed and alarm will not arm because the system think the door isn't shut.
thanks for info. I have tried this repair but no success. all doors will lock. however, driver side will not unlock. I have taken apart and put in copper wire. no improvement. any thoughts? thanks
+Robert DIY perhaps the wire is not down all the way. I had to put everything back together for now. I will take a look at it more on a nicer day. thanks
Hey I did this fix, and even though i can see the motor actuating on the mechanism during an unlock, the white plastic piece that moves the locking pin does not move up. Any idea why?
looking to put the lock back into place. i am having difficulty getting the exterior latch to fit down into the lock. there appears to be a loosely kept plunger with some threads that fit into a keeper on the lock. how do you position this so that it will go into the lock?? let me now thanks. volvo6802005 - passenger side rear door
I followed this tutorial, pulled the motor out, and put copper wire in place of the heat sensor. The electric motor still doesn't work. I think the electric motor itself may be broken. Do you know where I could order a brand-new replacement electric motor for the door latch?
Going to give this a shot on my 98 V70. Useful info! Have you ever tried QBond on something like the lock motor casing? Its basically super glue on steroids and fixes most materials. Cost me about $17 at the car parts place but one box had lasted all year. It's a must have for me as I work on older cars as well and some of the parts are getting hard to find.
could this be the reason i can't use the the power locks on my car? if i try and lock all my doors from the driver or passenger door or use the lock unlock button, you hear a buzz or grrrrr noise from the power locks. and it does what it did in the video some will lock others will not. sometimes they all will lock but still get the buzz/grrr noise.
I have a problem in my 99' C70.. I have the remote key to unlock and lock the car and to open the trunk, the trunk opens just fine with the remote but the doors lock/unlock ( i can see the door lock inside the car coming up and down when i use the remote key) but it doesn't let me open it, only when i insert the key.. I can't figure it out because.. if i open the door with the key and then lock it with the remote, the door will lock (visually) but it will still open if i pull the handle outside the car! Is it common on C70? or is this just another headache
@@RobertDIY So is this the same problem as with the remote control not unlocking/locking it? Cause in mine i can see the "stick" coming up and down when i lock or unlock it but the door itself doesn't! Thank you for your time
I have a 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo and both front doors will not fully close it goes to the safety latch but not fully latched what could be the problem thank you
Awesome detailed video. One word of caution , you can fit the electronic connectors to the door latch motor backwards if you aren't sure which way they go. I did and at first it simply didn't work on the one door. But now none of the door motors respond nor the trunk latch. And the car won't start either now. Go figure , anyone run into similar issues?
The SRS light would flash and no other light when the key was being turned. I reconnected the door latch and replaced the 20 amp fuse number 6 for the central locking/alarm unit . Works now, like new. Thanks for the speedy response too. Keep up the good work.
I tried this repair but wasn't able to successfully put the motor back together after removing the thermal switch. I was admittedly a bit ham handed when opening the motor up. But it occurred to me: with the two S70's I've owned this issue has only ever been with the rear door locks, the front locks have always worked just fine. So I wonder if the front door locks don't have this annoying thermal switch? I pulled a couple of front door lock motors from the junkyard and installed them in the rear doors of my S70, so far they're working great. And it's a lot easier than the electric motor surgery method here. To me at least. Assuming you have a junkyard near you of course. I've been meaning to pull a couple more front door lock motors at the junkyard and pop them open and confirm my theory that they don't have thermal switches. Does anyone else know by chance?
They have them. I didn't realize that the front door latches will bolt into the rear doors. 🤔 You will loose your child safety locks but most people never use them.
@@RobertDIY I'm only talking about the little motor, which looks identical, and I don't think affects child safety locks? I don't know how those work though so maybe I'm wrong. But it looks like the exact same motor. I haven't opened one up to check for the themral switch. But odd that I've never seen a front door with the issue. Maybe people just replace those more often?
Possible shorting plate: a strip of tin from a soup can, folded and hammered would work, its not a big motor so not much current to pass through tin. Everybody has food tins, no matter where you live :-) For copper, foreign coins perhaps, about the right thickness lol.
HELP!! Just did all of this and now the 1998 s70 wont start. All interior electronics come on but nothing from motor, not even an attempt to turn over. What happened??. I did not disconnect from battery prior to doing work. Car now dead in driveway......
Hello Robert, it is absurd that Volvo would use a motor where a simple solenoid (or pair of solenoids working push pull) would work far more reliably. I have a 2000 S70 where both rear door lock motors got lazy. To top off that stupidity Volvo placed the finger stems at the back so to reach the stems from the front you have to stretch far to reach. These motors are just low priority on a long nuisance fix it list on a car that's hanging in by a thread after 254000 miles. The most annoying is that everything (entire body) squeaks and crackles even on a smooth road
I believe it is against the law to destroy currency so I would not do that. LOL Copper or aluminum should work so you have a lot of material options. lineartechbd1600
First thing is to mechanically rotate shaft with fingers before doing anything else.If it works both ways that operation would help. Otherwise will not, something else maybe plastic gears are broken.
Anyone that knows the data of thermo fuse for the door lock motor and power window motor? Im about to order thermo fuse for the antenna motor, 2A 114°C. Might as well add those others since cost is almost nothing compared to shipping. Good video! Volvo S70 - 98
I fixed my driver rear door and it’s working fine except the door is unlocking when I push lock and locking when I push unlock. How did I manage that?😂 The motor only seats one way.

***** Nope. Yes the key lock is part of the handle and the latch is separate.
What if the sensor/switch for the light has malfunctioned? Is there a way to bypass that switch? My passenger door never thinks it's shut even though it is. Slamming it works, but I have to slam it hard enough to wake the dead. I don't need the lights to come on when that door is opened.
You can replace the latch.
Usually the plastic piece on the latch that contacts the striker on the body wears and light stays on
How am I just figuring this out? My 98 C70 has been a pain with the latches for a while now. My 07 V70 is possibly doing it too.
ouch!
What if the interior door handle is the only one that opens the door? Like the exterior handle doesnt open the door when its unlocked. Does this issue correlate with the thermal switch?
no
I stacked medium sized spade/blade fuses to take the place of the thermal switch. Measured very close in thickness with dial calipers.
+turbo4zetec ok
Hi Robert, my 2000 S70 has working motors but the passenger latch doesn't lock allowing the door to open whether it's locked or unlocked. Any help appreciated
You want to bring it by?

@@RobertDIY I'd love to but I'm in Phoenix Arizona
Hi Robert
I was having the problem with the front passenger door lock. I followed your fix with a piece of copper wire but now it locks when I press unlock and when I press lock it does nothing. I checked with the plastic cog removed and clicked the remote fob and the motor spins only when I press the unlock button on the key fob. When I click the lock button the motor doesn't spin. Any ideas?
Nope
Thank you
My problem is a bit different. The motor works and the lock button goes up and down but the door does not actually lock. Click button up then click button down but the door will always open from the outside. I'm stumped on that one.
Bad latch
I love my car.....I love my car.....I love my car.....I love my car.....I love my car..... BUT!!!! I HATE these gd pdl's! Otherwise, a relatively simple car. Thanks for this vid btw.
😜
Awesome! You are the man, Robert!
bob82pigdog Glad it helped.
Followed your instructions for repairing the door lock motor. The motor works now, but the door still does not lock. What else can be the problem?
bad latch.
@@RobertDIY Darn! we bought a second assembly from the junk yard before we watched your video, and my husband repaired the motors on bot of them, but neither will lock, even though the motor(s) now work. Is there a way to repair the latch?
Question:i just bought a 1999 Volvo V70 wagon without a key,is the drivers door and ignition lock cylinder the same?
+roger b Should be.
Robert I have a 1999 Volvo V70 wagon I need to put drivers door lock assembly on it do you have a video? Thank you.Happy Thanksgiving.
+Rob D I don't understand, this video shows how to pull that stuff apart.
Robert DIY thanks Robert. I watched your removal of the door panel. I will look at my car and see. I may just take it to the dealer.
Google may help.
Do you know how to repair the switch inside these locks, that recognize whether door is open or closed? When this switch wears out in any of the doorlocks, the footlight/doorlight will not turn off even though the door is closed and alarm will not arm because the system think the door isn't shut.
No
thanks for info. I have tried this repair but no success. all doors will lock. however, driver side will not unlock. I have taken apart and put in copper wire. no improvement. any thoughts? thanks
+Josh Ruppert maybe the wire didn't make contact. You can also replace the latch.
+Robert DIY perhaps the wire is not down all the way. I had to put everything back together for now. I will take a look at it more on a nicer day. thanks
I have a 98 volvo S70 driver's door will not open from inside or out.
I've tried pressing the brass piece to open door didn't work. Any ideas
Did you watch all of the other door videos?
Hey I did this fix, and even though i can see the motor actuating on the mechanism during an unlock, the white plastic piece that moves the locking pin does not move up. Any idea why?
My guess would be that the latch assembly is bad.
looking to put the lock back into place. i am having difficulty getting the exterior latch to fit down into the lock. there appears to be a loosely kept plunger with some threads that fit into a keeper on the lock. how do you position this so that it will go into the lock??
let me now thanks. volvo6802005 - passenger side rear door
Bring it by and I'll fit it in for you.
Is it the same for trunk lock on V70??
No, you likely have a broken wire somewhere or a bad actuator in the trunk.
@@RobertDIY I am able to open the trunk by key. But with remote it only makes clicking sound and doesn't open..
Nice mate! Love your vids, helped me so much! Thanks for that...
You are welcome.
I followed this tutorial, pulled the motor out, and put copper wire in place of the heat sensor. The electric motor still doesn't work. I think the electric motor itself may be broken. Do you know where I could order a brand-new replacement electric motor for the door latch?
+Forrest Iandola I have one you can have that works. Send me a pm.
+Robert DIY Fantastic -- thanks, Robert! I just sent you an email.
MrEvilshannigans Usually they will lock but no unlock. Never heard a "buzz" noise.
Very interesting repair. What an odd quirk in Volvos.
+Nicholas Miller very strange.
Robert DIY yep. ill be tackling this myself later. is the fuel door issue related by chance?
+Nicholas Miller Nope.
This video covers it. Worn out latch assembly.
@@RobertDIY So is this the same problem as with the remote control not unlocking/locking it? Cause in mine i can see the "stick" coming up and down when i lock or unlock it but the door itself doesn't!
Thank you for your time
I have a 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo and both front doors will not fully close it goes to the safety latch but not fully latched what could be the problem thank you
I have no idea
very helpful to fix my doorlock
+Pieter Jan Visser Thanks for watching.
+C Mendoza nope. You probably triggered the alarm somehow.
The SRS light would flash and no other light when the key was being turned. I reconnected the door latch and replaced the 20 amp fuse number 6 for the central locking/alarm unit . Works now, like new. Thanks for the speedy response too. Keep up the good work.
+C Mendoza good deal.
You have blown central locking fuse by this operation. Car won't start without that fuse.
Hey Robert, did the Loctite Power Grab work ok?
smoovebert It worked great going in. Not sure how long it will last, that will take a year or two.
Once again, thank you so much off to do that now
Thanks for watching
I did everything in the video and the motor just won't work, is there a replacement for the motor I could order?
+Robert Large yes.

is putting a penny for the electrico connection good to
+Juan Hernandez Probably to big. They are not copper so, not sure how good it will work.
I cut the penny to size and put it in and now it works perfect thanks Robert for your help
+Juan Hernandez don't tell anyone. It is a violation of the law to destroy currency.
Thanks!
Welcome!
Possible shorting plate: a strip of tin from a soup can, folded and hammered would work, its not a big motor so not much current to pass through tin.
Everybody has food tins, no matter where you live :-)
For copper, foreign coins perhaps, about the right thickness lol.
Yes, should be easy to find something to make the connection. zx8401ztv
Very helpful video.THANKS
Julius Barney Thanks for watching.
HELP!! Just did all of this and now the 1998 s70 wont start. All interior electronics come on but nothing from motor, not even an attempt to turn over. What happened??. I did not disconnect from battery prior to doing work. Car now dead in driveway......
Yikes!
glad you found the bad fuse.
My front passenger door looks like it locks but really doesn't. Any ideas?
Sorry 99 s70
+Dan Williams Bad latch assembly.
First of all thanks for getting back to me. I think I Have the opportunity to get a used one at the junk yard. A simpler fix I guess?
+Dan Williams Should be.
is there an updated motor number? I see 27340-394935 but can't find a match. Thanks for a great video.
I have no idea.
The most annoying is that everything (entire body) squeaks and crackles even on a smooth road
they are getting old. the good thing is that they can be fixed.
good explaination
Thanks for watching
good helpful video will attempt the repair thanks
+ronald mckay thank you for watching
I would take an old copper penny and grind it on the bench grinder. I would have tried a heat gun or hair dryer to open the case too
I believe it is against the law to destroy currency so I would not do that. LOL Copper or aluminum should work so you have a lot of material options. lineartechbd1600
First thing is to mechanically rotate shaft with fingers before doing anything else.If it works both ways that operation would help. Otherwise will not, something else maybe plastic gears are broken.
😒
Why doesn’t just cleaning the metal wafer or chip work?
I have no idea.
Anyone that knows the data of thermo fuse for the door lock motor and power window motor?
Im about to order thermo fuse for the antenna motor, 2A 114°C.
Might as well add those others since cost is almost nothing compared to shipping.
Good video!
Volvo S70 - 98
Not I said the Robert
I fixed my driver rear door and it’s working fine except the door is unlocking when I push lock and locking when I push unlock. How did I manage that?😂 The motor only seats one way.
Somehow got the polarity reversed. 🤔🤦🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
thx from czech rep.
you are welcome.
I used a penny and a grinder. Just make sure the penny is pre 1982. Lay the old waffer on the penny, and trace it with a pencil.
Yikes! I think that may be against the law.
Just want to use my key to open the car door 👁️
what does that mean? Your key doesn't work?
