My rear door was faulty. It was the same motor that was responsible, also the spring had popped off. Although process very similar, there is no need to lower the window. Thank you for your clear video on how to do everything. I'm in the UK and the part alone was almost £200. got the motors for £16 and it took me approx 2 hours to do. Thank you once again.

I had to do this on my C6 Corvette a few years ago, and I have to say...this is way more challenging on the Volvo. With the corvette, I basically did it in a parking lot in about 10 minutes. Driver side plastic held by gator clips comes right out and the piece can be pulled from the inside without removing any screws. Then you can just swap with 1-for-1 part. But thanks for this video, saved it in case my XC70 ever has this problem.

Great video! Thanks Yvegeny! I just completed this on my 2010 Volvo XC60. I reckon that saved me about £500, so really appreciate you posting it.
One thing that XC60 owners may find useful is about the step for releasing the window glass from the actuator mechanism. Volvo has changed it on the XC60. Instead of two bolts there are two clips. You still access them via the two service holes with rubber covers, as in Yvegeny’s video. However, it looks very different. You need to let the window down a bit more. After you see the steel cables go down, you will be in about the right place. The bottom of the glass should be just below the bottom of the righthand service hole. Through the black metal frame that you can see through the hole there is a clip that is coming towards you through the glass. You can release the clip by pushing it gently away from you. I used a 5mm allen wrench. However, you need help at this point. You have to release both clips at the same time. So have a friend hold the glass and gently apply upwards pressure. Then line up one allen wrench (or screwdriver would likely work), on each clip, left and right. Pop them at the same time and your friend can raise up the window a bit. Then secure with tape as Yvegeny did. I could not find how to do this anywhere online, so I hope this helps a few XC60 owners. Cheers!

Just wanted to add my thanks for this video, it made the replacement of the motors on both of the front doors on my XC70 very easy. If I hadn't found this video I would have probably blindly replaced the entire lock assembly.
One of the door pins/buttons was sitting lower on my car. After watching this video I assumed I'd probably find the spring missing but it was actually just the plastic button itself which had split and been forced down further onto the metal rod. It epoxied back together nicely.
I also greased my window regulaltors whilst the doors were apart, this seems to have resolved an issue I had with the windows sometimes stopping prematurely, probably because they experienced too much resistance.

The detail in this video is just superb. We've used this to do three doors on two cars (V70 and S80) and broken down step by step the daunting job becomes ok. Rather than repairing the actuator we swapped out for salvage parts, and the same motor module is used across all kinds of cars from across the mid noughties Ford family, including Volvos, Ford Mondeo and Focus. We got good results using actuators from a Range Rover, though you do need to swap over one simple component. Thanks so much for all of your hard work, and for narrating your videos in English.

great video, respect.keep up the good job! I did replace my front left door lock motors based on this. Only part where I got stucked a bit is putting back the lock itself. there is a little hook which must be at the right place over the body panel otherwise the lock can not be screwed back. once figured this out then it was an easy job (you need a second person to help otherwise it can be very difficult at certain steps).

    • @DapperDerek
      @DapperDerek 4 года назад +1

kerekgyartoistvan thank you for this tip. I got stuck here as well. For further detail, this hook is actually metal and when installed correctly hooks to outside of the door lock hole. If you are working on the driver's side door and the door handle and lock are not installed, then you will see 3 holes: 2 for the door handle and one (rightmost) for the door lock cylinder. You must install the inner assembly such that a tiny metal hook/finger protrudes out of the cylinder lock hole in the door and grabs the sheet metal. If you do not do this then the assembly does not sit flush to the inside of the door and you cannot screw in the T25 screw to fasten the cylinder lock. In fact you end up stripping the outside of the guide hole and getting frustrated, only to come back to this thread hoping to find a search term that explains how you are messing up. Once you have the inner assembly flush with the door panel and the little hook/finger outside then the T25 goes straight in no problem. Thanks again kerekgyartoistvan.

Yes, I did it with this great tutorial. There was one thing that was different during my repair. I have keyless entry, so to remove the door handle, I had to disconnect the wire for the keyless entry. The connection is on a spring. When you follow the wire from the handle, you can only see the connector. But to disconnect it, you need to bring the connector in front of you so you can disconnect it. The connection will “fly” back into the door. It was quite challenging to reconnect it. There’s a “lip” on the connector, so you can pry it out with a flathead screwdriver. However, the plastic isn’t very tough, and the spring is strong. I ended up pulling it out with pliers. The first time, the keyless entry didn’t work because i bend a pin so the second time, I gently bent the pin back, held the connector tightly, and managed to push the other connector in. And it worked! This will save me a lot of money. There is one thing; when I pushed the 3 plastic plug's out. In a weird way i cannot find 2 of them back. So I had to be creative and used some warm glue so in the future I can push it out again. But I cannot find these plug's anywere on the internet. Does anybody knows how i can get these? and beaware, the spring for the right doorlock is not the same as the left side.

I am experiencing same problem on my 2009 XC70 T6, identical to yours. I noticed that the passenger side lock button does not alway go all the way down when I lock the vehicle with the remote. My temp fix is to click the lock button twice. This seems to ensure that the passenger door is locked. I purchased the rear tail light module from your friend 2 years ago. It works beautifully and makes my older XC70 look like the newer ones from the rear! If my lock finally stops working, I now have an inexpensive way to repair it.

1/ these 3 fucking plastic locks you must push inside the door are very very fragile, and almost impossible to replace correctly when you put the inner panel back.
2/ on my 2011 XC70, the inner of the last box, where the engine takes place, is a little different. I have only one motor (the big one), and actually it is easier to take it out than in the video. So don't panic !

I did this job a few years ago thanks to a forum guide. Maybe I wasn't taking my time but I messed up a lot of small parts so from my experience:
    a) don't leave the door lock pin hanging like that, it's still only held on by plastic and on my lock it broke.
    b) when he says "don't overtighten" the mechanism that holds the glass, really don't. I overtightened mine (without realizing it, because this was 4 years ago and I'm an idiot) and stripped the threads. Had to buy a salvage yard new window mechanism and redo this whole job more or less.
    c) be careful with bit-tools when putting them in holes to the innards of the door. I managed to have bits get caught when pulling the tool out from within the door and had to re-disassemble the door 2-3 times.
Just some tips. I think I just had a bad day, it's not that hard, but can be a bit finicky here and there.

I would caution anyone trying this: At the end, getting the window glass back into the drive-bar clamps is not guaranteed just by lowering the window glass. You have to peer through the undersized 'port holes" and carefully verify that the glass is seated in both clamps. Do not assume the guides will steer the glass accurately back into place! For visual feedback, set the height of the drive bar to center the TOPS of the clamps in the view ports (you can slide the bar sideways). Then lower the glass and maneuver it into both clamps. The glass bottom edge should seat about 2 cm below the top edge of the clamps. Then raise the motor back up to the 15 cm level for tightening the clamp bolts. This detail will spare you much turmoil.

Rear Door - your instructions also work ok for a 2007 S80 rear door, but releasing the wiring harness was even more difficult. I'm a former engineer/prototype technician and for me, the repair process was difficult, but worth the savings.
Remove the door handle and disconnect its wiring before removing the metal panel. Other videos show this in more detail.
Get a sturdy box to support the metal door panel as you disconnect the multitude of wiring connector puzzles. Otherwise, the heavy metal panel will hang from the wires over many sharp metal edges. I cut some wires because of this.
I had trouble finding the 3rd retaining clip inside the door, so I removed the plastic reinforcement in the bottom of the door and found the $#%^% spring! I reinstalled the spring, but it fell out again very easily. Very poor engineering from Ford/Volvo. I drilled a small hole into the black plastic and riveted in a custom retainer plate to keep the spring in place.
My repair shop quoted $680 to repair the lazy lock. I almost bought a new lock motor assembly for $208. After watching this video, I bought the motor only for $13. The real problem was the $0.02 spring designed to fall off. This is my first and soon-to-be last Volvo.
Thanks so much for the detailed video. You saved many people a lot of money.

2015 XC70, Driver's door lock failed, and I just completed this procedure to swap in a new door lock module. Some finer points:
    Disassembly;
    1. Disassembly is easier than reassembly, because there are precision alignment and cable routing details putting it back together. When you first extract the combined door handle and lock assy., take photos of it from all sides to document the wiring and tendon-cable routes.
    2. If your Volvo has the black electronic lock button on outer door handle, there will be 3 harnesses to disconnect on the lock assy, and the 3rd one requires separating the lock unit from the plastic frame piece, then extracting the mated connectors from a "C" bay. I had the lock mechanism assy. out on the floor, still tethered to the inner door plate when I split apart the clamshell and finally got this harness disconnected. For reassembly, I decided to NOT put the mated connectors back in the C-bay.
    3. Before removing the outer door handle, you have to unplug its tiny wire harness.
    Reassembly:
    1. On the front door, there is a trick to getting the handle and key cylinder back in. When you have the combined door-handle/lock mechanism ready to reinstall, I suggest rehearsing on a benchtop how the outer door handle and key cylinder will be mated back up. The handle attaches first, and you have to rotate the spring-loaded swivel bar to get the handle seated properly (the handle will then spring back flush). Then the cylinder. Note the torx25 set screw that will hold the cylinder in place, and retract it just enough to allow the cylinder to slide into position. Note the disk on the cylinder that the key rotates, and the mating disk it will engage with when back in place.
    2. Before reinstalling the handle/lock assy,, attach the inner-door handle tendon cable. It will be too hard to attach later. Wait on attaching the inner lock button metal stem.
    3. Get the lock bolted into place, and install the exterior torx25 screw that aligns the door handle mechanism to the body.
    4. Attach the outer door handle as rehearsed on the bench, making sure the black gasket seal is in place.
    5. To start the cylinder in, pull out on the door handle so the tab on the cylinder can clear the handle.
    6. Using a lamp to see inside the set screw access hole, get a torx25 screwdriver mated up with the set screw as rehearsed.
    7. The cylinder and mating mechanism must be forcefully clamped together while tightening the set screw. You can do this by pulling hard outward on the door handle while pressing inward hard on the cylinder. Only with this hard clamping force is the set screw aligned & ready to tighten. If the cylinder is being pushed out as the screw advances, the clamping force was insufficient.
    8. If your outer handle has the electronic lock button, plug the 4-wire harness back in where it was disconnected.
    9. To not strain the lock wire harnesses, I suspended the inner door panel to the door frame using tie wraps, while plugging all 3 connectors back in place. I had to unbolt the door lock to afford myself room to get the farthest harness connected,
    10. After feeding the inner handle tendon thru the panel, I threaded the door button stem thru the panel and then attached it to the white plastic recepticle on the door lock module. After it's engaged, I rebolted the lock in place for the last time.
I didn't tighten the window drive clamps tight enough, and the glass broke free the first time I lowered the window. Is there a torque spec?
Replacing a broken lock -- this was a major repair. The video was essential to my DIY. Thank you Yuri / Yevgeny, well done.

Great video! I'm planning to do this job this week. My both front doors on my S80 have a hard time going up and down, but they still go up and down. So I bet the motors are still fine, but the small spring is gone. Still I'm going to replace the motors when opening everything up. One question: where do you find a spring like that? I can't find it new or will it be down in the door somewhere to reuse again? Thanks in advance for the answer! :)

On the 2009 Volvo XC70, I could not open the tailgate by any means and I had to carefully cut a square section from the inside carpeted panel that covers the lock in order to expose the entire lock. Even then I spent more than an hour poking and prodding all areas until I managed to open the lock and even now I couldn't repeat the process as I couldn't see what I poked to open it. Why Volvo couldn't offer a cable pull to open the lock like they did with the emergency fuel lid that locks is a mystery I could live without. I have the child safety lock which is also electronic and may have more to do with this than I know about. I will have to replace the lock as well as the entire inside panel since there were two screws I couldn't remove without opening the tailgate to remove them first. Brilliant or lack of it when it comes to making locks with so much plastic, springs with moving parts that are designed to fail and all but impossible to open via a manual release.

If you´re doing this on the rear of a 13-16 V70/XC70. Please note that there are some minor differences: You dont unscrew the glass panel, you simply press a small latch in and lift the window upp. Lower it until it sits about 18cm from the bottom and you will see the latch. The three stupid clips are repaced with three T25 screws.

FYI: the remove works by this way only by cars without keyless go! By cars with keyless go it is needed to put the metal board and the lock as one piece out of the door because there are 2 extra plugs and it is not possible to disconnect them when the board is not out of the door. Unfortunately there is not much space but it is possible to put it out in one piece.

Now I see why Volvo wants so much for that repair. I for sure would have broken many of those little plastic pieces and would end up being a $600 repair and definitely would not ever work again.
