THX!! The official dealer in my neighbourhood gave me a quotation to solve this problem..., he was gonna charge around 1200 euro ( 12,000 NOK) for this. You saved me from a ripp off, thank you so much.
This fixed my problem with my 08 XC70. Mechanic charged $1000 to change the latch motor WHICH WAS NOT THE PROBLEM. the problem persisted. I watched this video and fixed the problem myself within an hour for zero dollars. Thank you!!!
I have just followed your step by step tuition and even saw the corroded earth pin on the main plug. My tailgate is now repaired. Many thanks for your help. Brilliant 👏👏👏
THX !!!!, I had the same problem. Touching the tailgate button strangely lit my rear lichts , but the same as in your message, the tailgate stayed closed. I had the 'wegenwacht' roadside help at the car but at no avail. He concluded that a few fuses below the glove compartment were not powered, but could not fix it. With your help the problem was fixed in 30 minutes, and everything works ! A am so grateful for your videos! 👍👍👍
You saved me $350. Dealer wanted to charge one and half hours to do what I did in 25 minutes. Thanks for your help fixing my issue on the rear gate on my XC 60 Volvo.
This fixed my problem on my 2008 XC70 with a tailgate that stopped midway when closing and threw up a "tailgate open" message/fault on the display. THANKS guys!
My volvo v70 had this broblem month ago and its only five years old. This video would have been so helpfull but from the help of finnish volvo group I found some topic and people there said that the ground pin will melt. I was lucky becaus one time the trunk opened and I did just this and it has worked after. And now if it even happens again to me or anybody that I know will have this problem this video will help definietly! Great vido ones again👍
Just had this problem on my V70 -12. After watching this video it took me 20 minutes to fix it. And i know nothing about cars, im carpenter. You sir need an RUclips Oscar or Nobel, you are a life saver, thank you! Cheers from Finland! Btw, i didn't puncture the plastic cover with spike. Instead i drilled two 3mm holes next to each other and hone the plastic between holes. You can do it between the floor and tailgate gap. Worked like a charm. Just dont drill in too deep or you might brake something probably.
I haven't had an electrical problem in the tailgate yet, but this will definitely be something on the list of preventive repairs. Thanks for the video!
No holes needed, fixed from my trunk :). Part of pin in my connector burned out. Followed step by step and avoided high costs, it works really well, perfect!
My father came up with way easier way to unlock stuck tail gate, which we used and it worked. Take licence plate light out, take long cable, connect to negative battery terminal one end, other end to negative tail light terminal, click to unlock :)
Hello. Yesterday I had same problem with my Volvo XC70 D5 2015. 1st I checked the fuse but fortunately I seen your video. Initially I was afraid to start this operation, but I did it. After this operation I realized that only one think remains, ... to say BIG THANK YOU!!! Everything working perfectly! Greetings from Romania.
Hi Guys, I tried Yevgeney's method. Mine is the 2009 Drive E 2.4 5cyl. 312,000Km. On this model, the grey connector is behind the small easy access rear panel left side lower in the storage area. Not in the roof panel where Yevgeney's is. My ground is Grey/Orange. The teminals in the connector are not corroded. But I bent the ground pin over just a little to force better contact. Bend it too far and the connector won't close. The tailgate lock now functions. 1st attempt only worked with the key fob in the ignition socket. 2nd attempt worked with key fob removed. All good so far guys. Thank you. Superb.
Excellent video with very clear narrative and quality video without distracting background music. Fixed my tailgate/rear wiper & rear fog light issue in 40 minutes. Thank you so much and best wishes from Ireland. ☘
THANK YOU sooooo much!! I've been driving my Volvo for 2 years without any rear hatch functions. Watched your video and fixed them all in 5 minutes time! YOU ROCK!!
Very helpful to say the least. Very well explained and missed nothing. Need to push a bit harder that you would think to get through the plastic surrounding the lock. Don’t over tighten the nut under the light. Make sure you have a good quality connection for the cable. I had to fiddle the cable a bit to get it long enough to join. Much better advice than two main Volvo dealers gave me. This clip saved me about £500 all said and done. Thank you.
Guys. A very BIG thank you. Had exactly that problem even down to flashing dash warning. Saved me hundreds of ££££. Followed instructions precisely. Couldn’t get plug undone so just snipped black orange wires. They didn’t have enough slack so I made a 10cm extension wire and two connectors.
Brilliant! My XC70 -09 is identical to Yuri's. The power tailgate has stopped opening from the tailgate button. Now I just need to find someone to do this repair here in Prince Edward Island (Canada). Thank you, Evgeny!
Thanks! This solved the similar problem with 2015 V70 awd. It is not mandatory to open the trunck before removing roof panel. It is fully possible to do the fix from inside and open the trunck normally after that.
Worked like a charm, did this install in about 15 minutes (with the right praying tools etc though) as another user said i also needed to lenghten the wire a bit for it to reach together.
Many thanks for this great video. It solved my problem 100% during a vacation abroad with a need of using the tailgate frequently for loading and unloading bagage. It also saved valuable vacation time. Volvo V70 2015. /Mike
I just discovered (by accident!) that the rear lock is not working on my 2006 V70. Luckily it stopped working while open, so I didn't have to open it. Still it's crazy that alarm gets activated without locking the rear door. And when you open it - alarm doesn't get triggered. Check the read door with alarm activated... Repair is in order... Thanks a lot!
I just followed your guide on my XC70 -16. Really easy to follow, only thing I had to do differently was to extend the cable since it was not long enough on my car. Solder and shrink tube and done. Lets hope it works from now on! The pin did look slightly melted/dark.
I literally had this problem, followed the tutorial and fixed it. Cables were a bit short but managed to connect them. Solved. Thank you for saving me the €434 quoted by the dealer! Your videos are EPIC. It is so satisfying to fix your car yourself. Thank you and Yugeny
Hi, thank you so much. I talked to Volvo and they told me to break the internal hatch Cover to access and open the hatch. For that reason alone your video helped me a lot already. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Great video guys! Had exactly this problem and managed to fix the problem within an hour by following the instructions. Opened the locked tailgate using a very small screwdriver and spliced the ground cable using standard block connectors. Very pleased with the outcome.

@volvosweden - Thank you - I was able to get my dash to stop flickering and my rear wiper has started working again. But, still unable to open my tailgate using the handle. Are any of the other wires on the light grey connector related to the latch or trunk?
Thanks for this explanation. I will defenetely try it tomorrow as I have this problem, but when I open the tailgate from either the handle, the key, or the button inside, I can hear the lock working but the tailgate won't come out. Do you think it is the same electrical problem?
Thanks so much for the video. Very helpful. Would this work for my 2012 Volvo V60 with the same tailgate problem? How do I even unclip the trunk panel?
I’m now having an issue with my tailgate as well! When you were having this problem, would the button on the tailgate to close it still work? I’m still able to open my tailgate like normal, but it will not close by pressing the button on the tailgate and while the tailgate is open, the tail lights flash on and off like there is a loose connection. I’m about to do some surgery and see what I find, but would appreciate any input you have. Thanks for all your great and informative content!

спасибо, мой друг, за хорошее видео, которое решило мою проблему с люком Volvo xc60 !! 🙏🙏 Большое спасибо!!
I had this problem. The dealer at first misdiagnosed it. They changed the battery. When it happened again, they said it was the rear wiring harness in the tailgate. Cost $600 to repair at dealer. Symptoms was rear wiper not work, rear fog lights, tailgate, and instrument panel warnings, and battery discharging.
If they thought it was the battery they have the wrong job, that was very stupid.
The high cost is probably due to the service manual that force them to replace both connectors with original or even the whole cablage. The Russian fix is much better and don't cost so much.
I have this problem and they just replaced the latch motor. $1000 down the drain. THE PROBLEM CAME RIGHT BACK. will try this fix tomorrow.

Thanks! This fixed it. Or, rather, I just sprayed some 5-56 on the connector, so it works for now. Will probably have to be redone later.
This was a great video. Really showed me exactly what to do to resolve this issue. Thanks.
