A old Marine here, and I ate alot of this and was thankful for the meal that night, both in the military and at home. Your channel and all it stands for is like a a warm old blanket on a cold night for my soul, with all the stuff goin on in the world and on the internet, for me your videos take me back home and reminde me to get back right with god and my upbringing. Semper Fi
Old gunny (Vietnam) here, and I feel the same way. SOS (hamburger, nor chipped beef like those "*****" in the other services use ) plus greasy hash browns and hot biscuits - the Breakfast of Champions! Semper fi, indeed, to all of my brothers and sisters in the Corps!
Another old Marine here, when I was younger in the late 50s through the1970s my father was in the USNavy. He made two versions of SOS, 😊 one like this one and ne using chipped beef with a tomato sauce and garlic powder and onions, We had for breakfast. Then I joined the USMC and learned a 3rd way with pork, that was also very good
Becky As a former veteran of the United States Army, I am so happy you did this video. I have missed it for over 47 years, I'd put it on my eggs every morning at the chow hall. Thanks again, and Merry Christmas to you and your family on the birth of our savior Jesus Christ.
My Dad was a Navy cook in the Korean War. Growing up, we had a tight budget. SOS was on the menu. And potato soup...LOTS of potato soup. 💜 Praise God that we know what to do to keep our families fed. Thank you, Miss Becky, and God bless you for coming on here to help us along.
I love watching you. My husband said his family ate this all the time when they were growing up. He is the oldest of 7 kids. His mom made a big cake of bread for them. Mama made us plain gravy and light bread cause we couldn't afford the burger and she and dad worked so much they didn't have time to bake biscuits! There was just the 3 of us! Mom, dad, and me. We were poor as could be, but they taught me about the Lord and I carried that on to my kids. God first for sure. Keep on keeping on girl! God bless! 🙏💕🙏
My grandpa used to make us white bread with butter and karo syrup for a meal. I didnt understand at the time but that's what they ate during the depression.
Hi! I know this is an older video, but I just want to say how much I love you and how you present your content. Pure wholesome…. topped off with a Verse. Nothing can beat you. My mom died and left my 87yr old father alone for the first time in his life. In the 1960’s, he served our country in the USAF, with tremendous pride. I grew up with my mom making SOS because my father loved it so much throughout his service days. Well, when our mother passed, she had made her own recipe cookbook for me and my two other siblings. I’ve been a subscriber of yours for a while…. then tonight, out of the blue, this video of yours, just popped up on my reel. In the three cookbooks my mom made, not one includes her SOS recipe. My father is so lonely and depressed, thankfully he’s active, but he won’t help himself to eat causing him to loose weight, which he didn’t need to loose, as he’s always been slim. With this recipe video appearing just now, on my feed, I’m taking it as a sign from my Mom to make this for him. I think he’ll cry when I bring this meal over for him. Thank you SO much for sharing your recipes and for keeping our dear Lord in your content. May He bless you and your precious family in every way, every day. Much Love and Peace to you. 🎚🙏🏼♥️🇺🇸
Thank you Becky for the tips and ingredients. My dad was a Korean vet and I am a Viet Nam vet and we love this. Thank you so much and may God richly bless you in your endeavors.
In military back in the day.. Leftover sos, we would add Worcester sauce and sour cream. Put it on egg noodles and called it beef stroganoff. Nothing went to waste
I love it. Grew up on it, eat my weight in it while in the army and as a 69 year old man living alone now I still love it. Thanks for a great video and I love your stand for God and Country
I never knew SOS could be made with ground beef. My Dad was in the USAF where he learned to make it with chipped beef. When I was a girl, this was my fathers go-to meal to prepare when Mom was not cooking. We loved it. He has been gone just over 7 years and even thinking about SOS brings up warm memories for me. Thank you for posting.
This was one of my Daddy's favorite dishes. He loved it (Air Force). We lost Daddy almost 2 years ago. We are having this tonight in honor of him. Thanks for posting this easy to follow recipe. This is the way my Nannie made it, I just didn't have the measurements. Love your channel.
I am grateful to your dad for his service to our country. Sorry for your loss. It was a loss for our nation as well to lose a military man. God bless you and your family!
My single Mama raised me on this in the 70s and I loved it! We always had it over fried potatoes. Yum! Yum! Everything tastes better when cooked in a cast iron pan.😊Thanks for sharing this Becky! And thank you so much for the John 16:22 reminder. For such a time as this we do need this reminder. I'm ready! 🥰God Bless you my sister in Christ!
I love this as a kid. My father cook this for us every time he was in charge of food. He said he learn how to cook this in the army. Still like it to this day. Very comforting food warm and tasty I need some right now.
Thank you for your service. You must have been in Vietnam during Tet in '68. If you were, I'm glad you made it back alive from that one! God bless you!
Dad joined in '50, was stationed at Ft. Ord. Told us tales of this fine dish called "Stuff" On Shingles 😂 and we loved it! One of his brother's joined the Merchant Marines and served during Nam. He's gone now, and I don't have many stories to recall. A friend's dad was Navy, and he said theirs was a tomato based sauce. Happy Independence Day 🎉
My mother made a version of this and I've failed many times trying on my own. Watched this video and got it right the first time this morning. God bless The Hillbilly Kitchen
it's been 50 years, and to this day I have yet to find a SOS recipe that beat what our cooks made while I was with the 65th MP Co., 503rd MP Bn., Ft Bragg, NC. I'm gonna try your recipe, and we'll see how it goes. God bless you and thank you for your channel. I do miss my time living in North Carolina, friendliest people on earth live there.
Had this all the time growing up and it was one of my favorites. My mom had to make almost all the meals cheap and to go a long way. We had this with peas added in and put over toast. Kids today would probably think you were trying to punish them if you tried to make them eat this. Crazy how much times have changed. So many recipes on this channel take me back to when I was growing up. Such good memories thinking back to the days of large family gatherings, playing kick the can, climbing in the barn, climbing trees, skipping stones across the lake or pond, catching frogs, playing outside all day... the world really took a wrong turn somewhere along the way. Thanks for the great memories.
I grew up the same way. We raised our garden and hogs. We played after the chores were done. We went inside to eat then back out to hit the creek bank to fish and swim.
My 34 year old daughter still hates hamburger gravy we did eat it at least once a week I always liked it. I think it was about the only thing her mother could cook that wasn't just horrible
I grew up in a military family (Army), my mom has your accent, she's from Kentucky. My dad (Vietnam Vet) made S.O.S. with sausage and he would fry an egg and put it on top of the toast and put the SOS over that. Thanks for your recipe, I grew up on this.
My daddy used to make this all the time. He too was a army cook. There were 5 kids. He would add a little sage. Going to try your recipe. Thanks so much!
Had this hamburger gravy over mashed potatoes in school and I loved it. We had another version called turkey gravy over mashed potatoes and it was delicious too.
We had it in middle school. The kids called it Chuckwagon since it was like dog food. One day I asked for 2nds of Chuckwagon and immediately apologized; the cooking lady laughed and said since I wanted more she knew I liked it and the name didn't matter. I miss it, never had it since middle school.
When I was young my Dad used to make this and he called it Army Breakfast. Our whole family loved it. I should have learned how to cook it when my Dad was still alive. Thanks for sharing this recipe.
Wow this took me right back to my younger days when my grandma was cooking for all of us! I don't think I've ever been homesick for food but this might be on the top of my list now for meals when i get back home.
Becky I am also a Kentucky native clicked on your video started watching and knew where you were from instantly then you mentioned Cumberland Gap and that told me for sure. My Mom and Grandma cooked just like you. They taught me a little but boys didn’t learn to cook in the 70’s. I have watched several of your videos and it really brings back memories. Going to try a few of your dishes they look really good. Thanks for sharing your skills and recipes - Dennis from Elizabethtown
HAHAHA! SOS...Had not heard that since I was in the service..I liked two pieces of buttered toast on a plate, ham and cheese omelette on top, and SOS over all...every morning after PT...great stuff!
Dude I always got the ham and cheese omelette with the SOS/gravy on top too! Best thing to build you back up after running a 4 mile AGR hungover as shit on a Monday morning after 4 days of heavy drinking haha
Navy boot was where I first heard of SOS. Ours was chipped beef in white flour black pepper gravy. I still love it. But haven't had it in a million years. First time I had over easy eggs as well. Got by mistake. Had 15 min to go thru line eat and fall out in formation. Mom was a scrambler.
Absolutely!!! Fond memories of morning chow. I don't care what anyone says, some of the best food I ever ate, was in the Army. To this day breakfast ain't right if it ain't covered in country gravy😁
Love this! When I was in the ARMY, I'd have two pieces of toast, three eggs over easy on the toast, and cover every bit of it in the SOS. Breakfast of champions. I never got tired of it, it was so tasty. Great video!
oh my God. I finally found my all-time favorite breakfast. When I was in the Marine Corps and this was served for breakfast I could not get enough. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Now I just have to find a way not to scew it up :)
@@gaillouviere8471 I'm 72 and have been cooking for many years never made anything I couldn't eat may not have looked good but it always tasted good. Fancy feast don't always taste good.
My father would occasionally make this for dinner when I was a kid. He was raised incredibly poor in the 1960s, and this was a quick, easy, and cheap meal that we all loved. I had completely forgotten it's existence until I saw your video.
I would love to talk with your father. I thought I was the only one raised incredibly poor in the 1960s. Our life was nothing like the play world they showed on t.v. t.v. ruined the nation. Idiot boxes for sure.
My grandma made this for her and myself when I lived with her in the 50's but she added peas and ladled it over mashed potatoes. It's one of my all time favorites.
Got two toddlers and a teenager I'm going to have to give this a try! Sounds like it would be wonderful over anything rice noodles toast mashed potatoes I'll let you know how they liked it when I make it!
Had this growing up and still make it sometimes. Mom put it on the table with mashed potatoes and bread so we had our choice but we'd usually have some of each. Great economical meal. God Bless.
OH MY GOODNESS!!!! I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS RECEIPT!!!! My Dad & Brother in law made this & I absolutely LOVED IT!!! So THANK YOU!!! I have watched/Saved a lot of you homemade receipts!!! LOVE YOU & GOD BLESS!!!! The GREAT LORD IS MY SAVIOR!!!!ALWAYS put GOD FIRST!!!! LOVES/HUGS!!!!
Thank you so much Miss Becky! I’m from a military family and I loved this growing up! I love it with a lot of black pepper as well. I used to fold my toast corner to corner and eat it. And my momma would also make mash potatoes so I loved scooping the part that escaped my toast into the mashed potatoes. She would have peas asa side as well. Thank you for making a budget meal. We all need it!
Raised by a mother from Mississippi and yes, you gotta cook that flour. Brown it up real good in the bottom of that iron skillet and it will be so good tasting you wont ever do it any other way ever again. Nothin better than country cooked gravy in an iron skillet. Love your county cooking! 😃
We used to have this when I was younger. I still do sausage-n- gravy over biscuits, but I forgot about doing the SOS with ground meat! Wow this brings back memories of my childhood. I'm 54, and probably haven't had this in 44 years. Thanks for the reminder, from Texas :)
@@Fortis_Bellator It had never occurred to me to put gravy over fried potatoes. I grew up on a red dirt road in East Texas, and I don't remember anybody ever thinking that fried potatoes needed anything! I think they're just perfect the way they are. My favorite meal.
I seen beans $3.95 yesterday. I really Appreciate your video sister. The lord is coming. Every country us haven natural diaster. I had a revelation 2 years ago. About hunger around the world. Im here learning how to feed family
My grandma used to make this for us for dinner occasionally, and I used to make this for my family (we have 8 kids-now grown). I also made hamburgers for the side as my husband is a huge meat eater. Our local schools used to also make this and they did what we did as they served it over mashed potatoes. I'd make hamburger gravy, hamburgers, mashed potatoes, and a vegetable. Sometimes biscuits, depended on my mood. We probably ate this once every other month as the kids liked it. I enjoyed watching you make this as it brought back a lot of memories.
PERFECT TIMING BECKY. MY BROTHER JUST MOVED IN & THAT'S WHAT HE WANTED TO COOK. WE USED WATER BEFORE. BUT MILK GIVES IT SO MUCH FLAVOR. WATER MAKES IT BLAND. HE'S IN THE KITCHEN NOW AFTER WATCHING. THANK YOU BECKY!!!!!
I watch youtube cooking videos to relax when I have anxiety spells. I discovered your videos tonight & your videos are great for recipes and comfort tbh. Your voice is relaxing & I thank you for the content & recipe ideas.
My dad was a Marine and served in Vietnam! My mom was in school 2 nights a week and my dad was in charge of dinner he made this often….. always over toast…. Always with green beans!! I loved it. My ex-husbands dad (also a Marine) made it once. with chipped beef. I was a MUCH bigger fan of ground beef! I have been looking for a recipe but none of them looked right. This looks JUST like it! Thank you for your service ❤️
I was thinking about this dish just the other day because my mother’s 92nd heavenly birthday is coming up and she made this and it was awesome. My father served in the military and we had SOS on toast often growing up. We never turned up our noses at this dish. Then again we were raised, if it’s on your plate, you will eat it or go to bed hungry. Lol
An old Marine here and I've always loved SOS...thanks for the video and I plan to make it at home. And, thank you for spreading the word of God as well...not too many cooking videos, if any, provide scripture as well. Be blessed!
Oh my gosh I can’t believe someone else makes this. My father was a Sargent in the Army. He use to fix this all the time. When I had a family I made it for them. It’s a family favorite. Now they fix it for their kids!!! No one I’ve talked to has ever heard of it but absolutely loves it!!!
I made and ate this today for the first time. It is soooo delicious! I made it right along with this video at the servings shown. I used ground chuck, fresh onion, seasoned salt, crushed black pepper, and beef bullion cubes. I served it over wheat toast with a nice spring mix greens and tomatoes. My toddler grandson tore this up!!!!! He asked for several helpings and had to stop him😆😆 I’m thinking of adding some diced banana peppers and a lil of red pepper flakes next time to give it a kick! Thank you for sharing and God Bless!
Growing up we ate egg gravy, when low on eggs for our large family put on homemade biscuits. When in Marine Corp boot camp I had my first S.O.S. Yes and loved it,to much.A old Vietnam Vet and his memories.Thank you for the video.
My husband introduced me to this dish after we met. My dad was a roast man, and I preferred spaghettios and ravioli as small child. I read about it in cookbooks, but that was it. We used ground beef too, instead of chipped beef, which is very salty. Since I was usually feeding at least two men instead of children, I used two and a half pounds of beef. If I ever have to serve teens or adults again, I'll use the beef bouillon to help them think there's more meat and help stretch it too. I still might use at least a pound and a half of meat. I love that you have the Pledge of Alligence in your kitchen, a great reminder of our original values too. We need to turn back to God in this country, too many people are being lured away by Buddha, Mohammed, Hari Krishna and many other false gods. That can't help them in times of trouble or heal their bodies or calm their minds when they have negative and hurtful thoughts. God bless you and your family.
Peter Murphy, Peter Murphy 5 cents a glass. If you don't like you can kiss me in the...ask me, ask me I tell you no lies. Johnny threw a bag of it and hit me in the eye. My father is 88 retired from the Air Force and used to sing that Diddy. He didn't call it save our ships either.
I grew up watching the old Westerns, still the best. I appreciate your cooking ministry. The times are close to depression era times. These recipes are tried and true.
I appreciate not only your recipes, but the verses and " God-thoughts" that you sprinkle throughout your videos... it's like a mini devotional. You help to feed people's bodies and their souls. Thank you.
This was one of my favorite meals that my dad would make. He learned it from the cooks he was stationed with in the navy. My grandma would make mashed potatoes from her garden, and put that on the toast and smother both potatoes and toast. Thank you for showing how to make this. Especially the gravy. I am still learning how to make gravy. May God Bless You 4EVERMORE ❤❤❤
Ate this every morning in Army Basic Training. Delicious! And I was starving by lunchtime😀I have never eaten so much in my life as I did those eight weeks…and I still lost 25 pounds! Bless you and all that you do. God is good ALL the time, amen!
I always cook this with mashed potatoes thats how my mom made it most of the time. We did toast when we were low on potatoes. Its one of my favorite comfort foods. I think I will have to cook this with in the next few days, it is good... Anyone just starting out making gravy and having a problem with flour taste. I brown my flour for 2 to 3 minutes and you have to stir constantly you do not want a speck of flour to burn even the littlest amount of burnt flour will make the gravy taste terrible so remember to stir constantly and not on high heat I brown flour over medium heat. The flour won't burn if you keep stirring for the 2 to 3 minutes and getting every spot. Just dont let gravy making intimidate you its not the hard and gets easier every time you make it before long you will be a pro... Thanks for sharing and the kind words. God Bless you and your family...
When my dad made this when I was a kid he ripped the toast into bite size pieces then put fried potatoes over the toast, then the SOS over the potatoes then a couple sunny side up eggs on top. It was and still is delicious. Great video, thank you.
My mom and grandma used to make this for me when i was little and i thought it was the best thing ever. Thank you sooooo much. I just adore you and wish you were my neighbor.... well we sorta are...im in WV ❤️
Thank you. I just made it for dinner tonight and thought I would have plenty of left overs.....but noooooo.....my wife even liked it. It was very simple to make which was great.
I love the way you think about the new little cookers and you explain to them even the simplest thing like using the bottom of your fork and if you didn't how it would leave little streaks instead of getting all the good stuff. You're very conscientious and sweet and I love that about you.
THANKS BECKY FOR THE RECEIPE. MY MOM USE TO MAKE THAT FOR US A LONG TIME AGO. THEY CALLED IT SOMETHING ELSE. I WANT SAY WHAT !!! BUT IT WAS GOOD. LOVE YOU.
We ate that alot in the 50's and 60's sometimes with tuna fish or salmon as we lived on the river. Grandma would bake the salmon and then shred it into the gravy for a change as they rarely went to the grocery store except for flour, sugar and coffee. The rest was raised and canned. Beef, pork, chicken, fruits and vegetables. It was great to be raised like that. God Bless 🙌
It was wonderful! I was raised mostly like this. We almost always had two huge gardens. Dad raised field corn to grind for cornmeal and for the animals.
My dad was a cook in the Army. He would make this when i was growing up. We fix it with only black pepper. I fix it for my family the same way. Also i took the hamburger out and made my gravy then put the hamburger back in. I've also fried up hotdogs and made gravy over it. These are comfort food to me now.
I served in the Army in the early 80's. Loved S.O.S. Still love it. I make Chipped Beef on toast, but I use corned beef in the packages. Adds a lot more flavor. I served in the Army again during Desert Shield/Storm in 90/91. Got me some more Army S.O.S. I do make that too.
You can also do half hamburger and half sausage to give it a kick and sometimes sausage goes on sale fairly cheap. Makes it go further and makes it a little spicy. It's yummy.
My granny made it with just hamburger, (their own cows) but something she put in it sometimes would make it taste like sausage gravy. I'm guessing some sage, but I wonder what else might give it that taste?
My Dad from long ago made this for us 8 kids and we loved it! He added a dash of Worcestershire sauce and fresh onion! What a treat😌 blessings to your family!
This just made my day 😁 I grew up on both versions of this and I LOVED it. Sadly, my family isn't quite as gung ho about it as I am. You reminded me of my Mom who's been gone 10 years. Thank you so much. I really do believe that the way to our hearts is through our stomachs. I don't think I realized that until now ♥️
i grew up on that, i've been making it for 40yrs, never measured anything, just eyeballed it. perfect every time. i make it with sausage and bacon. every time i make this i can see my moms smiling face. she served it on homemade biscuits.
Your tip to cook the onion powder in county gravy has been life-changing for me. 70 years old and didn't add onion powder until I was your video. Thank you so much.
First time I have seen your channel but the title grabbed my attention as this was a dish my Grandmother would make for my Grandfather and I all the time since it was something he like from his time in the Army. I lived with them from when I was 14 until I was 22. I miss them every day. They taught me so much.
I got to meet them in Cheyenne at the Frontier Day Rodeo when I was a kid and road with Lornne Green around the arena, is a great memory, have had my share of SOS when in the army, still love it, God bless you and yours. Love you sister, from Fines Creek NC.
My grandmother's hamburger gravy was served over toast, mashed potatoes, rice and even over hamburger patties. Loved it every time no matter what it was covering. It even goes great over scrambled eggs as well as hashbrowns and don't forget the biscuits.
Love! Grew up eating this also. Dad is an Air Force veteran so I’m sure that’s where mom picked it up. My husband, whose father was a Navy veteran, ate it also. My mom always served it with toast but my husband prefers plain white bread the way his mom did lol. I always make plenty of extra because my youngest son will eat it cold the next day in a sandwich, like my dad! : )
Possibly the best "poor food" I've ever eaten. Also, it can be added to, if you happen to have more ingredients. I've often included mushrooms, onions, chives, or peppers. It really is a great and versatile meal. Whoever created it was a genius!
When I was in grade school we still had real ladies who cooked real lunches in the basement of the school building. One of the things they made was mashed potatoes with hamburger gravy. It was one of my favorites. I've never had it anywhere else. I was glad to see this.
Yep, I was a cook in the Marines 77-81, and made good old SOS 30 gallons at a time and several batches each morning. I used garlic powder in mine as well as onion powder. It's basically the same recipe as the chipped beef (shaved brisket) on toast. In the Corps, we didn't waste anything so after Brisket was cooked for dinner, you knew what was going to be for chow at breakfast.
I was an army medic. I ate in army, airforce ( no marine) and navy mess halls. I gotta say, the navy had the best service food that I tasted. But, I loved SOS.

I am grateful to your dad for his service to our country. Sorry for your loss. It was a loss for our nation as well to lose a military man. God bless you and your family!
I had my first plate of SOS in the Air Force 1969-1973. RVN 70-71 I'll think of your passed Air Force dad when we make it here at home. God bless you.
Similar story here, father was in the Air Force and this meal was one of his and my favorites. Thanks for sharing, the memories are fond.

Sorry for your loss. There are memories, Michelle, in the good times too.

And thank you so much for the John 16:22 reminder. For such a time as this we do need this reminder. I'm ready! 🥰God Bless you my sister in Christ!

it's been 50 years, and to this day I have yet to find a SOS recipe that beat what our cooks made while I was with the 65th MP Co., 503rd MP Bn., Ft Bragg, NC.
James, I agree with you! I'm 78 and my childhood was so great. So much freedom !
I feel so sorry for today's kiddos!
Just wanted to let you know, I'm 73 and the kids and grandkids all like this but no peas
Well said. …

Remember it well.
Ditto. Grew up on a farm in Indiana and had sos routinely. Also goes a long way if you mix it with macaroni...yum!
Turkey a la King is what my school called it. Great stuff!
I also love this only ate it at grade school. We had super good cooks. I like it served on mashed potatoes.
I'm an old soldier and I still love this.
When I was young my Dad used to make this and he called it Army Breakfast. Our whole family loved it. I should have learned how to cook it when my Dad was still alive. Thanks for sharing this recipe.

Glad you made it home Sir..

We ate that alot in the 50's and 60's sometimes with tuna fish or salmon as we lived on the river. Beef, pork, chicken, fruits and vegetables. It was great to be raised like that.
