I had an aunt that made a beer bread. She used a warm beer, mixed it with self rising flour and baked it until almost done. Then put butter around the top but not enough to spill over into the oven. Very reminiscent of a sourdough bread. And delicious. No beer taste and the alcohol cooks out.
You are so much fun to watch Becky. I love that you can admit your mistakes and not try to hide or cover it up or blame someone else. Most of all that you are so open about your faith! I am also a Christian and wish more people would believe in Jesus.
Back in the 60's, 70's and 80's my God-mother baked sourdough bread for her family. When I would go out to their farm for a visit she would make me a sandwich with sourdough. It was WONDERFUL! I've not had it since then but I've tried to make the starter and for some reason I failed to keep it alive. Maybe I'm not comprehending the instructions well enough. I'll keep trying since it getting autumnal cool and it's BAKING TIME!
I love sour dough bread. That looks delicious. I'm not a baker so I won't even attempt this. I wish I lived near you. Your neighbor would have a customer for life. God bless you both. ❤
God bless you, ladies ✝️💜 from North Idaho! Wanted to share why I only eat sourdough bread: A friend of my mother's, worked in a large food warehouse and storage area. She said rats were always threatening the food and this is what she witnessed: They would bypass all the breads (except for sourdough), and, instead, eat the....dog food!! So that's how icky all the other breads are 😮 Make Sourdough ❤
Ok, so I love working with yeast. I brew beer, mead and bake bread but have never made my favorite bread...sourdough. I will be making this. I love this channel.
May make this after the days of unleavened bread are over. We are now observing the seven days commanded by the scriptures. Have cleaned all leaven out of our homes and hopefully our hearts.
Great episode I made sourdough bread 2020 during Covid pandemic when our family was all together . My daughter in law who is French and lived in SanFrancisco visits with my son . It was quite an education learning this process . San Francisco was noted for sourdough bread 🥖 Thank you 🙏 BLESS YOU BOTH
After watching scores of sourdough bread videos, yours has given me the courage to give it a go. My starter is in the fridge waiting for its moment to shine. I named it "Junior" since it is a 'child' of a starter that a friend has. Thank you both and God bless.
I just started making sourdough, it took me a a while to get it right. I love making the bread. It's relaxing and very good for me to focus on something other than my stressful job. 🙂
Thanks ladies for sharing the starter information . And baking beautiful crunchy bread . Butter jam or jelly . Good sandwich made out of it . Are with any meal . Have A Great Weekend Both Of You .
Words to the wise….do not throw the discard from the starter down the drain! I did…ruined my garbage disposal and some plumbing! Needless to say my husband was not happy! Learning curve with sourdough bread making!
If you mix it with water before you put it down the drain, you shouldn't have any issue. You can also put it down the toilet as well, but you might want to stir it up before you flush. Because of the nature of our septic system here, having starter go down the drain actually helps the process to break down all the material that does into the tank, and keeps it very healthy.
@adelevotte4840 What kind of issues did you have? I thought it was good for the septic tank like @seagrif said. I don't have a disposal but if it stops up the pipes that would be good to know 😕Thanks For watching ❤️God Bless You!
@@seagrif when we opened the pipes the discard totally plugged up the pipes. We really exasperated matters with turning on hot water to break up the discard. I was told by a plumber I was basically baking and expanding the starter. I would just put the discard in another recipe or put it in the trash. I have no luck with starters period.
@@TheHillbillyKitchen The discard solidified in my kitchen plumbing and destroyed the garbage disposal. We tried flushing with hot water. That made matters worse. Basically bakes and expands in pipes. Seized up my garbage disposal as well. I will never throw sourdough discard down my drain again! This was my experience!
@@seagrifMy husband Bill just pointed out that you’re exactly right. The discard absorbs the bacteria in the plumbing. That’s what makes the sourdough discard expand and unfortunately cause the blockage in the plumbing. I had a few sourdough starters going that week. I was a tad overzealous!
for the last few weeks i have been having the thought that I should at least learn how to make starter and try to successfully make a few loaves! i have learned so much from you! thank you!
It takes months to make a mature starter. You can start baking with it within a week but the flavor isn't great for months. If you get a mature starter from someone else, you can bake perfect loves the next day. Bethany's Fred Starter has a wonderful flavor. Thanks For watching ❤️God Bless You!
I use my discard and make a sourdough flat bread with nothing added just fried in butter in frying pan. Its so delicious. I can add syrup or smother in jam.
Thank you for all your hints. My sourdough almost needed a crowbar to get thru the bottom crust. Well...good thing my dog Noah has strong teeth. The mistakes make excellent dog biscuits. 😅 and now I will try again😂
I cheat mine with a tiny bit of dry yeast and make it into a regular loaf. It rises faster then I bake in a regular loaf pan and use it for sandwich bread. Soudough Is so much healthier for our gut. I haven't bought store bought bread for over 2 years now.
Clean your starter jar with cold water. I fill a large plastic bowl with cold water. I put all of my baking tools in the bowl of cold water. I usually water my plants with the rinse water. Do not pour it down your drain. Makes cleanup a breeze
I put a wet paper towel in the bottom of a cold ductch oven then but my proofed dough on parchment on top , close the lid and put nto a cold over and start at 480 degrees and check in 30 min.this has given me great results.

It makes a wonderful pizza crust and you make any type of pizza with it, regular pizza, dessert pizza, experiment pizza (I have used green chile for the pizza sauce and it’s wonderful with the sourdough).

I found some round plastic wrap-Saran type- with elastic edges at Dollar Tree. The box I bought had various sizes and about 20 in the box. I bought them for covering bowls for an outdoor meal. Kept the bugs out. Also used them to cover bowls that had leftovers in them.
Thank you!! If you really want to be economical and healthy, you can order organic wheat berries in bulk and invest in an electric wonder mill and mill your own flour. You can have fresh, healthy flour ever day!!!
Another way you can steam in any oven is to get a spray bottle and spray the inside of your oven. You can do it with an electric or a gas stove or oven. Excuse me, but that’s what a lot of bakeries do. Don’t have a steaming option. A lot of the oven these days, have a well in the bottom if you look, you might see a slight indentation in the bottom of your oven you can put water in that and steam that way

You zeroed it with your whisk in but at least you left it in when you were adding the flour. 😁
You also have to worry about Rope Mold as well . In your starter . I had that in my starter weeks in .
I like bread that has more chew to it.
Tip: Don't wash raw flour down the sink. If done regularly, it plugs every thing up over time.
