Julian Hetcher is well known in Europe due it's Book "Hatchers Notebook". This book is insanely full of Information on historic guns. I highly recommend this book.
My father was a US army MP in the 50s and early 60s and he carried his M1911 colt .45 acp every time he was on duty. He never missed when shooting large coffee cans with it from 15 yards distance away

Interesting contrast in styles. I like the utilitarian functional US style. I remember a re enactor that did both Wehrmacht and US Army WW2 impressions. He said the US uniform and kit was more comfortable and functional than the German gear. Anyway thanks for showing some nice pistols.
You should not be apologetic for collecting the German stuff. Its trophies of victory against the odds by our grandfathers and fathers prevailing over the most formidable foes of their time. And I had many Jewish business associates who while enjoying their prosperity drove the German luxury cars rather than American brands, and carried licensed German concealment pistols for protection instead of the domestic wheelguns as used by the cops and fellow civilian professional colleagues. That was a status symbol of using the best.

Actually, AUS stands for "Army of the United States" which was inclusive of all personnel called to duty during a national emergency (draftees, activated reservists and National Guardsmen, etc), as opposed to "United States Army" which refers to the permanent regular Army, limited to active-duty career soldiers.
We used to differentiate commissions between Regular Army (RA) and Army of the United States (AUS). There were two systems of promotion as well. RA officers were permanent and guaranteed a job at their RA rank. AUS officers were temporary and would be the first discharged after the period of expansion ended. The system was discontinued around 1980.

However, owning both and placing these side by side the dustcover of the actual Commander is shorter than the Government to correspond to the abbreviated size of the slide. While the General Officer's RIA edition retains the same frame dustcover length judging from the video of the side by side shot. Perhaps a learned gunsmith with technical expertise might notice and comment, it seems that the Arsenal just chopped the slide to customize the sidearms, among other details pointed out.

I am familiar with Gen. Hatcher since getting 'Hatcher's Notebook' 50 years ago. He also wrote a textbook on pistols and revolvers, himself being a crack marksman. He was active in Ordinance work and his books contain many interesting anecdotes about both military and civilian incidents. I recommend his books highly. His friend John Garand's name was pronounced Garund, rhyming with parent. Gen. Hatcher was on the technical staff of the American Rifleman, the magazine of the NRA. He had an extensive gun and ammunition collection, naturally.

On 14 May 1940, legislation provided that all voluntary enlistments in the United States Army during a time of national emergency or war were to be in the Army of the United States "without specification of any particular component or unit thereof." The "Army of the United States" as a service component was formally activated in February 1941. It was legally considered the successor to the National Army.
Times get tough for some. Others just do not like guns or want them in the house. Etc, etc, etc. I'm with you though. I couldn't imagine parting with such a piece of (family) history.
I'm an antique dealer, I buy family heirlooms almost every week often entire collections. The reason is, the person that originally collects a piece or pieces is the only one that has any real connection to it. The person who inherits it typically has no interest in it because he has not put in the time, money and effort to collect it. Often they have no need for it or even no what to do with it so it goes to auction. Very few pieces are handed down and kept by more than one generation. The moral to this story is: If you want your kids to hold on to your stuff, you need to get them involved in the collecting process so that they have some skin in the game.

You didn’t mention the Colt 1903 which was presented to US Army generals when they were promoted to general officer. The colt 1903 production stopped around 1945 but the army issued to the generals until the early 70s as I recall.
1903's and 1908's the GO 1911 was started because the supply was dwindling rapidly and a smith at rock island though his personal competition gun would make a perfect replacement!!
What a great group of videos. Those guns are amazing! As far as the Germans and their military items, as awesome looking at some of that gear is, it's amazing how much of their budget went into such expensive items. From very expensive swords, guns and military uniforms. They weren't too efficient at trying to save money for the war. But I guess in the end, that was a good thing as they ran out of money lol.
My Dad always accredited General Patton with going to the end of the chow line when food was offered. Most officers went to the front and butted in front of the enlisted men. Patton was flamboyant but respectful of the men he led first come first served.

We moved into the house I now own in 1987. I found a German device hidden in the basement. It turned out to a compass device used in navigation WWII German bombers. In German it's called a "MUTTER KOMPASS' Translated to English it's 'Mother Compass'.

ive read about these General Officers Pistols if i recall they wer made up custom by the rock island arsenal.they are hand fitted with the finest parts they had available.they cut the slides down an inch or so so its a commander size pistol. they wer presentation grade but wer also built to be used. the sights are excellent! probably the nicest 1911a1s the military ever produced. aside from the amu nm target pistols. those wer top notch as well
Yeah I used to feel the same way aboit nazi guns, or anything with a swastika. Would categorically not own anything with one on it (waffenamt). Then I got my first wartime k98 and decided to pull the trigger on a wartime Luger, and it started… just completed the Wehrmacht domestic pistol production collection and now planning on how to increase the satellite pistol collection. Owning or drooling over nazi era sidearms doesn’t make one sympathetic to them, it’s just when you start collecting them, you see the level of quality and coolness in them and kind of overlook the whole fascism thing and simply appreciate the amount of various high quality sidearms they used and how they were developed.
Bottom line for me is: it's history and should be preserved. I don't collect any military relics, but that could change as much as I enjoy this channel.
I think the new ones have limited supply but the early CLASSICS will continue to go up. (In my opinion) . The made modern PPK's but the pre1946 guns continue to climb.
the originals are an order of magnitude higher in quality they're prices will stay where they are for a little bit (maybe 6 months to a year!) due to the newbs buying the new builds just because they want a python which one doesn't matter as long as it's a python at a good price period but originals will continue to rise!!

I guess that you missed the book and the movie -the book We Were Soldiers Once… and Young (1992) by Lieutenant General (Ret.) Hal Moore and reporter Joseph L. Galloway; and the movie was the book We Were Soldiers Once. You or your advisors are mixing history. The 1st Battalion 7th Cavalry was in Vietnam in 1965, two years prior to the entry of the 3rd Battalion 506th Infantry in 1967 along with the 101st Division Headquarters its 2nd and 3rd Brigades. the 506th Infantry was part of the 101st 3rd Brigade. I suggest that you grab a copy of the book above as well as divisional histories of the 11th Airborne/Air Assault Division, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), and the 101st Airborne Division. As for the divisional histories, I suggest that you read them in the order above.
I collect only WW2 weapons but from time to time share something that comes across my desk that is way out of my wheelhouse. So.... I often know very little about the history of a gun - including this one. But I rely on viewers like you to add "light" and context to my videos; so I appreciate your comments. If I studied the background of every gun I've put on video (over 800 guns) I would likely get about 2 videos a year done. Thanks for the info.
Oh, my! At 2:30, "AUS" is neither Australia nor Austria! I am very surprised that a person making videos on military weapons does not know that AUS is the abbreviation for "Army of the United States!"
I remember seeing a Photo of Ike wearing a pair of Monk strap dress shoes in uniform. American generals seemed to favor a more lower key flamboyance. I think part of the difference is that General officer pistols are expected to be deployed.
@@keithmoore5306 if I remember correctly the WW2 General officers side arm the official one (not Patton’s personal arsenal as he was packing heat even in the bath) was the Colt pocket hammerless. Very practical pistol Generals had the option to buy their own which was the presentation. That was replaced by the Commander sized 1911 shown in the video which were custom built by Rock river until the rise of 9mm. Today US Generals if they buy the pistol get an M18 with rank and name engraved. The German pistols were status symbols. Meant to be admired not fired in anger.
@@terranempire2 Patton carried a 1903 as well but yes in WW2 they issued the 1903 as a primary general's sidearm but a supply of 1908's were held in reserve in case they ran out of 1903's (they were counting on shutting down the 1903 line but never did due to OSS demand for them!) but a 1908 or even 1917 could be issued if requested back then! the GO models was issued until mid to late 87 when they ran out then they just upgraded standard sized 1911's until the blunder 9 came along and then they issued the M12! and i do mean blunder someone needed a drug test after deciding that!!

One day, as an elderly man, he was crossing a stream and that is where he figured he lost his Navy Ka Bar knife from his service in WW2. I bought him a new Ka Bar, and when we were going through his estate, there it was, new in the box. Some things are difficult to value.

the last GO was issued in mid 87 maybe the fall of 87 if memory serves! after they ran out they ran out of them they started upgrading standard 5 inch 1911A1 government's for generals and then issued the M12 after they caught dumb ass disease and switched to the useless 9mm and adopted the M12!! i don't think it came with a fitted presentation case since it was meant as on duty carry gun! i know the full size general's issue came in a standard locking foam lined travel type case with 2 spare mags and cleaning set up and it seems familiar for the GO model as well! the GO model is also the origin of the combat commander model!
I don't know when it started or when as the US Military has some VERY flashy and bright dress uniforms!!! Metals or awards shows what the solder has done or where they been assigned.

This blue finish seems too black and dull. The real royal blue is more blue and shiny. Hope it helps.

I guess that you missed the book and the movie -the book We Were Soldiers Once… and Young (1992) by Lieutenant General (Ret.) Hal Moore and reporter Joseph L. Galloway; and the movie was the book We Were Soldiers Once. You or your advisors are mixing history. The 1st Battalion 7th Cavalry was in Vietnam in 1965, two years prior to the entry of the 3rd Battalion 506th Infantry in 1967 along with the 101st Division Headquarters its 2nd and 3rd Brigades. the 506th Infantry was part of the 101st 3rd Brigade.
I suggest that you grab a copy of the book above as well as divisional histories of the 11th Airborne/Air Assault Division, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), and the 101st Airborne Division. As for the divisional histories, I suggest that you read them in the order above.
I collect only WW2 weapons but from time to time share something that comes across my desk that is way out of my wheelhouse. So.... I often know very little about the history of a gun - including this one. But I rely on viewers like you to add "light" and context to my videos; so I appreciate your comments. If I studied the background of every gun I've put on video (over 800 guns) I would likely get about 2 videos a year done. Thanks for the info.
Oh, my! At 2:30, "AUS" is neither Australia nor Austria! I am very surprised that a person making videos on military weapons does not know that AUS is the abbreviation for "Army of the United States!"
I remember seeing a Photo of Ike wearing a pair of Monk strap dress shoes in uniform. American generals seemed to favor a more lower key flamboyance. I think part of the difference is that General officer pistols are expected to be deployed.

@@keithmoore5306 if I remember correctly the WW2 General officers side arm the official one (not Patton’s personal arsenal as he was packing heat even in the bath) was the Colt pocket hammerless. Very practical pistol Generals had the option to buy their own which was the presentation. That was replaced by the Commander sized 1911 shown in the video which were custom built by Rock river until the rise of 9mm. Today US Generals if they buy the pistol get an M18 with rank and name engraved.
The German pistols were status symbols. Meant to be admired not fired in anger.
@@terranempire2 Patton carried a 1903 as well but yes in WW2 they issued the 1903 as a primary general's sidearm but a supply of 1908's were held in reserve in case they ran out of 1903's (they were counting on shutting down the 1903 line but never did due to OSS demand for them!) but a 1908 or even 1917 could be issued if requested back then! the GO models was issued until mid to late 87 when they ran out then they just upgraded standard sized 1911's until the blunder 9 came along and then they issued the M12! and i do mean blunder someone needed a drug test after deciding that!!

It never crossed MY mind that you were a Nazi sympathizer. I know that you are not. We know that the 2nd Amendment would be removed by socialists from the Constitution if they possibly could. I concur that the National Socialists had some spiffy uniforms, and it would not hurt for the U.S. Army to follow suit. I have heard, more than once, that the ranks of the United States Marines have been swelled by the esprit de corps of that organization AND getting to wear their dress uniforms. The Navy uniforms look good, too. My father served on a destroyer in the Atlantic from 1942 to 1945. One day, as an elderly man, he was crossing a stream and that is where he figured he lost his Navy Ka Bar knife from his service in WW2. I bought him a new Ka Bar, and when we were going through his estate, there it was, new in the box. Some things are difficult to value.

the last GO was issued in mid 87 maybe the fall of 87 if memory serves! after they ran out they ran out of them they started upgrading standard 5 inch 1911A1 government's for generals and then issued the M12 after they caught dumb ass disease and switched to the useless 9mm and adopted the M12!! i don't think it came with a fitted presentation case since it was meant as on duty carry gun! i know the full size general's issue came in a standard locking foam lined travel type case with 2 spare mags and cleaning set up and it seems familiar for the GO model as well! the GO model is also the origin of the combat commander model!
