  • So I think you guys know that over the years, as my colored pencil and supply collection grows… that I’ve been struggling with a way to not only house it all, but to keep it very accessible to me while I’m coloring.
Today… I’ve come up with a new solution and I’m very excited to share it with you guys… so stick around….

I keep my pencil sets in various sized slotted cases. For me, they work out well. My desktop is large enough to keep the cases, my pages, lamp, & cat all in place & leaves room for the tea.
I learned to number my pencil slots from another RUclipsr & it helps me re-order my open stock pencils. The other thing I like about the cases is that I can always grab 1 & a book to go!

I have tried so many things to store my addiction 😂, but I always go back to color groups in mugs or jars, lined up in front of me on my work table. When coloring in the evenings, I have a caddy next to my recliner that holds my jars of color grouped pencils. Your new system looks so neat and tidy, but I guess I must face the fact that I like to see the pencils and have them right there ready to snatch up. I will anxious to hear how it works for you.

I definitely need a new system. My prisma pencils are still in their box they came in and my 100 crayola pencils are in a large bin I got from the dollar store. I live in a small apartment and I color using a small table that folds up that my wheelchair just barely fits under lol. Oh the things we put up with for our coloring joy 😁

I did something, somewhat similar, however I bought a 10 drawer cart at Michael's and also 3 sets of trays. You can fit 3 trays in 1 drawer. The cart was $30 but I can fit all my coloring supplies and able to wheel it around the house wherever I choose to color. I do need more trays but they were out of the blue ones so i will have to wait till they come back in stock. thanks for giving me somewhat of an idea with the trays.

I think I have pencil OCD. I can't mix brands at all. It makes me shudder to think of it. I keep the bigger sets in elastic loop cases and the smaller sets of things in their tins. I really mix brands in a picture either. I choose the picture and pick the pencil set I think will suit it the best and stick with it.

I have too many sets of pencils to get them all in the individual containers. I switch pencil brands so I can give them all some love. Therefore, I use the wallet type holders and put different set in each. But, I love this idea for all the odds and ends of things I'm always digging for - eraser, bull clip, Posca pen, etc. Thank you so much for sharing this idea! Next payday, you know where I'll be! Blessings!

I went to Michael's and got several sets of the Marker storage cases. They hold 60 markers upright, but the cool thing is that each slot holds 4 pencils perfectly. So each holder holds a whopping 240 pencils. This is the best idea I have ever found so I can group all my colors and they are so easy to find and pull right out.

Glad you found a solution that seems like it will work for you. It is so pretty!! I have all my supplies in a rolling ikea cart with pencils in smaller zipped cases on the middle shelf so they hardly take up any room. I like the small 72 slot cases because I usually colour in a living room chair so I can tell if I am missing a pencil at the end when I put things away and I can have several cases open around me at once. As I work on a page, I keep the pencils I am using in a round clear container. The top of my cart has all my extras in jars and other holders.

I thoroughly enjoyed your struggles and solutions, all with gentle humour. I currently live in a total mess, with ink pads in ice-cream tube, pencils in a variety of containers, paper and card stock in expanding (but not expanding far enough) folders, which look to be on the verge of splitting. My table is inaccessible, and my craft area doubles as my food prep space - about 15 inches square... I know I must organise it all, but where to begin! I began my hobby as a way to get my mind off metastatic cancer, and now it has become the problem! Oh well. Thank you for the ideas you've given me, I'm sure I shall work it out, now that your video has entertained and amused me on this bright but cold morning! 😃

I like your system, but it doesn't really work for me. I'm a colored pencil snob, and I keep my Prismacolors separate from my Crayola's, and separate from my Polychromos, etc, etc. For me, those zipper cases with the elastics work better. I have one that holds,I believe 120 pencils+ and one of the same but it's bigger and not only holds about 72 pencils but a coloring book or two. That works for me because I take my art stuff EVERYWHERE! I divided my 150 Prismas between the two pencil cases, all in the order according to the back of the original Prismacolor box, please it holds a few other items. For now, that works for me. I am planning now, on getting a roll case that they sell at Michael's, that will hold all my stuff, books, pencil cases, extra pencils, my brush pens, gel pens, literally EVERYTHING! LOL! We'll see if this works. While I'm at desk, the zip cases work well. If course I'm open to any ideas for organizing all my stuff at my desk. So I really liked your storage idea! I'm going to definitely keep it in m mind! I LOVE your channel! I used to watch a lot if different channels, but I think I'm down to just yours and Coloring Bliss. Both you and Jennifer have taught me SO MUCH! Thank you for your videos and tutorials! I really have learned a lot from you!

Great storage solution, i think it will work for you, and, bonus, if you need to expand, you can turn your shelves upside down, thereby using a bottom as a top and get another row for bigger items or another 3 pull out trays :o) I use the pencil cases, my prismas (same pack) fit into 2 of them and they don't take up much space, are easily transportable if needed and the pencils are protected from clashing together and chancing breaking the leads.
I liked your video so I subscribed. I also love colouring and use copic markers, pencils and pretty much anything i can get my hands on lol. have fun with your new system. PS: Your video was full of great ideas, i'm sure many people will adopt lots of them as they need to.

Hi! Your video was randomly recommended to me because I love watching art organisation videos but your setup looks pretty neat! I think the only problem I "could" see with this in the long run is having to pull all the boxes in and out all the time and dig through a container of pencils to find the one you're looking for. If you're still open to suggestions you could go for something like Baylee Jae does with her markers in this vlog! I know markers and pencils are different but it still could be useful!

Nice idea, very neat but I wouldn't have paid $24. Right now I use plastic disposable cups which are ok. They're grouped as reds/oranges, blues/purples, greens/yellows and grey/browns, plus another cup for my blender and extras like posca pens etc. I also have a cup with gel pens which I rarely use. They're all in a plastic basket from a dollar store. The cups tend to fall over when I take one out so I'll have to find a better way to store them or heavier cups.

I like your way of storing your colored pencils. Right now I am working on doing little swatches for my colored pencils, gel sticks, crayons, and markers. I am re-using Temptation cat treat little 16 oz. size treat containers. I do like your method also. The only problem that I have with my way of storage is with having short colored pencils. An also a large enough bin to put all of the different colored storage units in. I don't know how many colored pencils I have. I just bought a new set of Staedtler colored pencils the 72 count set and I haven't even swatched them yet. The only reason is because I am working on my other sets of colored pencils swatches. What brands of colored pencils do use? I have Faber-Castel Metallics, Crayola, very few Prang, Hand Made Modern Metallics, Rose Art, Artist's Loft, Cra-Z-Art, Timeless Creations which I think is Cra-Z-Art also which at the time didn't know about that they were the same, very few Laurentien, very few Derwent, Sargent Art, a few Aquarelle, Create Like Crazy, and Color your way to calm. I would like to get all of the brands but buy the largest set of colored pencils. I also collect coloring books. Would you have any recommendations on colored pencils and coloring books. I have some like Johanna Basford's coloring books, etc. Please send any recommendations to my email address: flower85345@gmail.com
Thank you for the information and the video.

I don't have anything just use boxes came in. Needed something badly. Thanks so much. ❤😆

I keep mine in the original Prismacolor 150 box. I have to look at my swatch chart, pick my colors, then I put them in a jar and as I use them I put those colors in another cup after I write the name number and where used on the picture. I would like a desktop cabinet that holds two Prismacolor trays side by side and have four drawers. Basically like the 150 box.

I absolutely love this idea, I just wish I had access to stores that sell the trays. One problem of living out in the middle of nowhere, no shopping centres close by.

This was like listening to an audiobook of a fairy tale. It was narrated so expressively. All that was missing was "And they lived happily ever after..." at the end. ^_^ You could be a voice actor!

Hi Rachel! I love your videos...I'm going through lots of your older ones and came across this one. You asked the question what the name Non-Photo Blue means - not sure if you've found out in the two years since this video but just in case....non-photo blue means that if you write on paper with it and you photo copy that paper...the blue will NOT appear on the copy - hence the name 'Non-Photo Blue' - just means you can't photo copy it. Thanks, Heidi

I use a bunch of Rubbermaid (for the kitchen) plastic containers. The base is clear and the top is red. I can stack them very high, I label the top and the end with the brand and if they are colored pencils or watercolor pencils.. When not in use, i keep them in a large plastic see-through bin that I can slide under my counter top.

I store mine in preserving glass jars with the silver "rim" screwed on. They fit, take up less space, all colours are visible, look nice.

Very cool! I wish I had room for this. But I Papercraft and have a Diecutting machine so RIP desk space. I think your system would work great for my Polys and Inktense because I know those sets well. As soon as I see the name I know what the color looks like one coat, layered or wet with the Inktense. But with my Prismacolors ...yeah No 😞. I have to have them in order to remember what color is what. So I have them in a big case. My Polys are in a Creative Options Small Rack System stuffed in the trays. You can get all the colors in there plus extras and nubs of pencils to. It's portable which is my main concern since I don't have a designated coloring area. I'm not sure if offers much in the way of pencil protection besides the fact that I can't step on them now (trust me it hurt me way more than the pencil) but it's Polychromos. I think I could use one as a chisel in a pinch, and the core would be just fine 😄 lol! My Inktense are more delicate so I keep them in a pencil case. I would prefer to keep my Polys and Inktense together in something portable though. Thanks for the Great Video! 😃

Wow that’s a good storage system girl, by the way please take care with the frizzing temperatures there in Chicago. I think you would use that system for a long time, I’m still using the wallet one but I have one for my prism as, one for the blick’s and one Por the inktense , have you try those? Thanks

I only use pencil cases because I they keep my pencils secure. I have different cases for each brand of pencils I own. My favorite pencil cases are Btsky I buy from Amazon.

I got myself a very large pencil case, 120 slots....it hurt my fingers getting the pencils in and out the elastic WAS SO TIGHT. so, they are sitting back in their designated tins waiting for me to come up with something else......Then i saw your video!!! Thank you for sharing and giving me some extra ideas.
