My favorite ADULT COLORING TIPS AND TRICKS of 2018! - A PencilStash Coloring Tutorial

  • Today, we’re taking a look back at 2018 to see what we’ve covered and what I personally learned about my own coloring journey along the way… so stick around
Hello colorists! We’re right in that sweet spot between Christmas and New Year’s, so I thought it would be fun to take a look back at 2018 to choose not only my favorite PencilStash videos, but the tips and tricks I learned along the way. That’s right folks, I’m still learning too! With each page I color and each video I make, I usually learn something new that I can take with me to utilize on future pages, too. Every page I do, I consider as practice for the next one… so with anything worth practicing, its also worthwhile to take a look back to truly dissect and take a look at some of the lessons learned by either doing something well.. or even doing it wrong! I don’t know about you guys, but I learn way more from the things I do wrong than the things I do right. And I’m limiting this list to the things I particularly learned in 2018, so no repeats from last year’s Year End Review.
So let’s begin our look back at 2018…
    #1 - ADDING TEXTURE
    #2 - FAVORITE COLOR COMBOS
#3 - BALANCING COLOR ACROSS THE PAGE
    #4 - PLAYING WITH DIMENSION
    #5 - KEEPING YOUR MISTAKES
#6 - COLORING ON VARIOUS SURFACES
    #7 - COLOR PALETTES
#8 - EXPANDING WITH MY PAINT MARKERS
Happy New Year everyone! Thanks so much, as always, for all your support in 2018. This channel is growing like wildfire! I’m just about to hit the 20,000 subscriber mark as we pass into the new year, I’m so excited.
Enjoy the holidays and I’ll see ya’all next year! Bye bye!

Thank you for the Awesome tips. My boyfriend just got me some gel pens. He got me a set of 48. Plus he got me an adult coloring book. They were suppose to be stocking stuffing for Christmas . He gave them to me early. I was really having a bad day. The Lord really bless me the day I meet Jeff. I am 71 years young and a newbie at adult coloring and I am having fun.

I am new to colored pencils, but you have taught me so much, and I really wish you could see the difference in my work. I am your success story and I am so grateful. I have even shared a few of my pictures with the Prismacolor group on FB. I have leaned from you and now have more confidence in my coloring. Thank you so much!

As an editor, I have to selfishly say thanks for the shout-out to us! Nitpicking and being a “grammar Nazi,” they’re seen as being so profoundly negative, but we don’t just do it to be mean! We look good when you look good! We are fine-tuners, cheerleaders, straight up enablers! We help an author’s work put its best foot forward and shine its shoes! It takes real love to shine the shoes of another person’s world, poured freshly on the page and straight from their brain!
It’s so uncommon that we get mentioned by people who aren’t in the writing community, and then it’s usually to point out something that slipped by. Either a mistake or stylistic choice that person wouldn’t have made, it’s usually Monday quarterbacking. I appreciate the love. 😊
I used to do pages with my mother when she would visit, while we listened to an audiobook. We’re both chronically ill and it was often so difficult to meet up; either one or both of us really should have been in bed, but we preferred to feel horrible together. Now she has late stage cancer. Her second course of chemo is coming to an end and it’s up in the air in terms of how it’s going to go. She’s not been able to come to my apartment (no stairs allowed) since her surprise diagnosis in January during an unrelated surgery. It was supposed to be routine, but they found an abdomen of cancer.
I haven’t broken out the Prismacolors since then, but with her chemo hitting her harder and harder, us trying to weigh lowering the dose but also it’s efficacy, and another season turning, I’m making an autumnal page for her. All the jewel tones she loves and rocks. I can’t be with her often, but hopefully she’ll look of it and think of how much fun our visits always were.
Even as a kid, I’d bring her pages and she’d tape them on the cabinet by her bed, because that way she’d “see them much more during the day than if they were in the front of the house.” I’d also give some to my father, so he wouldn’t feel left out. He still has a blue and purple butterfly on his bedside table in my hometown.
I know it’s been a bit since you posted, but thanks for doing it. You never know who’s watching, or why.

Watercolor takes patience. You would love watercolor PENCILS. I do both. I’ve been nature sketching with Prisma Colored Pencils for decades. I am doing a lot of watercolors lately. If you try markers, I’ve just completed an exhaustive study on what to buy. Copics are the best. You have to use the card paper made for them and not use watercolor paper with them. They are refillable unless you buy the Choi beginner type. Also buy them in shading sets so you won’t be frustrated. Those come 3 to a pack or more. To shade you have to buy some cool or neutral or warm shades of grey. I think they have 500 or more colors. They sell a blender too that you’ll need for highlights. I loved this video.

I JUST GOT BACK INTO COLORING FROM A FEW YEARS AGO. I USE IT MOSTLY FOR DEPRESSION AND IT HELPS. AND I WATCH YOU ALOT. I EVEN REPEAT WATCH CERTAIN VIDEOS AND I TRY TO COPY. I STILL HAVE PROBLEMS WITH SHADING,AND EYES. ALSO COLORING COMBOS. BUT I AM NOT GIVING UP!! I NOTICED U ONLY SEEM TO COLOR INTCATE PAGES. NO DRAGONS, FAIRIES ETC ETC. DO U ONLY PREFER TO DO THOSE.DO U CONSIDER THEM TO BE MORE OF CHALLENGE THAN SIMPLE PAGES? THANK YOU FOR SHARING UR WORK!!

A big problem I have is smudging. Sometimes the lines in coloring books and pages I print myself will smudge when I color them. Even using colored pencils will sometimes smudge the ink, particularly if I am using the blender pencil. How can I prevent that from happening other than avoiding coloring over the line?

I am very new to coloring like two months new. Five things I struggle with is selecting colors, light direction, shading, blending and adding texture. I color flat and I don't want to. I'm having a hard time with figuring light direction and how shadows will be if it were a real picture. I become overwhelmed with where the light is really coming from, are there other windows not seen in the picture. Blending is the worst as I end up with lines. I received Prismacolor-150 for Christmas and I'm kinda frozen. Some of the members on the Facebook page have given me some direction and tips. Please direct/recommend me to the videos on selecting colors also if you have one on blending. Thank you so much for your videos. You truly are a pleasure to watch. Ps. on the section covering your mistakes, I didn't see any. Not kissing up, just being honest.

Becky or Steve Johnson - your reply is cool because I found her and am trying to follow it but it’s not working. Plus I don’t know the colors too well and what works with what. Lori has mentioned something about some colors that town down or tone up other colors. Which I don’t understand. I’ve heard in her a video talking about color theory and I think I will need to find something on that. Have a nice day. 🌻

Donna van Schaik I don’t understand a ton either but I’m learning! I found some videos you can watch on color theory. Search “where warm and cool colors” by The Art Spirits, “how to choose the right colors” by Katerina Zh and “color theory as it pertains to adult coloring” by Color My World. This channel, Pencil Stash, has two great videos on choosing colors from about 9 months ago or so. Keep watching videos and learning, it’s fun!

I used to watch every one of your videos and learned much from them-that is until you started playing music in the background. I am hearing impaired and wear a hearing aid. Hearing aids amplify or diminish certain sounds depending upon the kind of hearing loss of the wearer. Because of this, certain music sounds can completely overwhelm your voice or completely tune it out, Even if the music is turned down. I know there are many elderly people doing adult coloring and are probably experiencing the same. It’s too frustrating trying to strain to hear what you are saying, so I I regretfully have to say „ Good bye“.
