Awkwardly Making an EPIC Colored Pencil Wooden Storage Rack with CHEAP Dollar Tree Supplies!

  • Опубликовано: 13 июл 2021
  • It's an akward video that's longer than it needs to be of me making craft supply storage. What more can you ask for? (Don't even get me started about the chothespin...save me from myself!)
    Supplies:
    Scrap 2x4 lumber & plywood If you don't have a scrap of plywood you can purchase a seasonal "wooden" sign at dollar tree, it dosen't matter the design as you will cover it and it will be cheaper than buying a small sheet of plywood at a lumber yard.
    9 wood crates like these from dollar tree: shrsl.com/32ns4 You can buy a minimum of 4 online and they will ship it to your local store for free if you are worried about not being able to find these at your local Dollar Tree. I discovered that each crate will hold about 100 pencils comfortably so determine how many pencils you want to store and divide that number by 100 to see how many crates you will need. You can put jam jars in the crates if you want to store fewer or if you do not wish to use dividers so that you have more options to use this for other things in the future.
    Wood glue: amzn.to/3wC9SDn
    Hot glue (optional but it holds things tight while the wood glue sets up) amzn.to/3ra6Kh0
    ***Important! You don't have to use as many grates as I did, also you can configure them in different ways to fit the storage space you have. You might prefer a 4 long, 2 deep situation to go along the edge of a desk and in that case, you don't need the plywood, just glue the lower layer to the wood in the back. Make it your own. Consider turning it on its side for other art supplies you want to store.

    Love this. You could also designate an empty spot in front to contain colors used during this project, to keep them separate until the project is complete.

    I love the pencil stand you made!! So clever. To make your pencils stand upright, add a 1-2”layer of pinto beans, lentils or rice, etc… to the base of each box. Choose a bean or rice depending on the size of the slat opening on your boxes. Rice and lentils may fall through the little gap on the sides, but pinto beans will not. This will make your pencils stand up straight. I use rice in the bottom of large recycled glass candle jars to hold all of my paintbrushes. I love how they stand up straight without leaning on the other brushes. Rice also has the added benefit of helping dry out the brush handles after my painting sessions (since rice absorbs moisture). Pinto beans for pencils would work well I think. Just a thought.

    I like the jar idea inside the slots. That way if you just wanted to pull out browns and grays, you could pull the jars and leave the rest where you usually store them. By the way, I’m glad to hear that it holds your entire set of 520 Brutfuner pencils AND gives you room for more. You know, in case you need even more than 520 colors!🙄

    • @lisathaviu1154

      Or if you have a work in progress and you want to keep your colors that you are using separate, putting them in a jar and putting the jar in the back of one of those boxes would be good.

  • @HeidiLilley
    @HeidiLilley 3 года назад +11

    WOW, I love this! I will never own 500+ colored pencils, but I can see me using 3 of those boxes and doing a mini version of this stand. I'd probably also divide each box into three sections as opposed to two. This is such a totally customizable stand., and I will be working on making my own version of this. TFS your wonderful creativity.

    Basically it's a good idea, and you seemed pretty happy with it, so congrats on your pencil container. :)
    I know you are called the frugal crafter, and that is why you probably picked up these boxes, but unfortunately the pencils do not stand up straight, and that's probably because the boxes are too shallow for these pencils. The pencils lean over and will probably tip out of the containers quite easily. So, being a bit of a woodworker myself, I thought about the quickest way to fix this, if it should bother you in the long run, (and also, if you can still get the dividers out,) you could make the dividers 1" or 1"5 or even 2 inches higher ( test it out beforehand) than the boxes and glue more dividers, same hight, at the back of each division.
    I feel silly giving advice to the Frugal Crafter ;) but I imagine you might get fed up, if your nice new pencils keep tumbling out, so at the risk of getting blasted by your admirers, (btw I like you, too) I post this anyway.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  3 года назад +1

      No one will blast helpful hints. I can put cups in there it it bothers me or add extra corner to corner dividers. I want them shallow because when they get used I can't see them peeking out if cups or taller sized storage 😆

    Love it! Quite the woodcrafter, Miss Lindsay! Think I might try it on a smaller scale. I bought this triple layer case for my pencils and hate it. There's 20 bucks wasted. Your plan is much better.

      I don't care for the cases either except for travel. They are cumbersome.

    The clothes pin totally reminds me of trying on my wedding dress. I am either a size zero or a size 2 and of course the samples were all 8 or 10 so when I tried them on they were clothes pinning everywhere and telling me well just imagine how it would look. Needless to say it was difficult to imagine :).

    Its awesome! So much organized space. You could also use walpaper, colorful sticky vinyl or glossy paint to decorate it. Problem solver Lindsay to the rescue, lol. I had to take a second look at the date on this video, I dont think i have seen you use this room in quite a while.....

      I use it for bigger messy projects and sewing (actually Lila took it over today to sew lol!)
