Here I am looking at ways to keep all of my art supplies in perfectly beautiful order. I'm obsessed with keeping them all nice and neat. But looking back, when I was a kid, I used to just throw all my crayons and into some kind of a box or a big cookie tin. It was a gross mess, but I had fun with it. I'm sure there were a few legos mixed in with the crayons too.
I use browns a lot, so I have a lot! I organize my pencils pretty much like you, BUT, first I place my grayscale, I use the white, the 18 greys, and the black, from Prismacolor, then the tritone, and then all my browns, starting with beiges tones, then the ochres, the orangy browns, reddish browns, greenish browns, and finally, the more neutral browns from light to dark. 😊 Aside from those Prismacolors all the rest of my pencils are from different brands. I have bought them open stock.
Now a comment....I love your channel, all the effort and time you and your husband Steve put into all this work in order to teach us so many things about artistry since you have videos of different aspects of coloring and with different mediums to use. You are very creative and talented. Thanks so much for sharing all of this with us. Also enjoy seeing little Rose helping you along the way!!
I purchased this type of case several years ago. I found that putting 3 pencils under 1 elastic caused too much strain on the pencils as I used them. It could have been because I was organizing Prismacolors at the time that I felt it caused a problem.
This is great, I’m glad you went through these steps. After watching the first Color Theory video and using the printed Quick Color Picker Guide book and printing out the Faber Castell Polychromos Tri-Tone pages I was able to complete organizing the tri-tone portion of the Polychromos colored pencils. Once I started coloring I soon realized I needed to label the pencil colors in the pencil carrier. I didn’t even realize Steve already had created those nice, tiny labels to color and laminate. Yeah!! I also needed to see how you laminated those label tags. And finally I needed to know how you organized the remaining colored pencils. You covered it all for me, thank you!! I suspect this info might be in the remaining Color Theory Workshop videos but I just wanted to jump in. Finally, after coloring with the tri-tones organized, it started making sense. Still a lot more learning ahead and I’m so excited 🥳
I tried this but it wound up driving me nuts because I work from multiple sets at a time. I finally took all of my pencils out of their tins and cases and put them mixed all together by color.
@@jodymcdougle8810 I am too and it was driving me crazy not having everything at my fingertips. I have them all in tea tins inside an Ikea Raskog cart and I'm loving it. It's easier to match up colors when I have all of them in front of me.
Do you organise the pencils in color in the boxes of the pencils? I want to organise in color but I hate the boxes and cases. I’d rather use little tins, bút to see the right color (Luminance and Derwent) you have to put the pencil on the tip in the cup so you can see the colorend on the wood. I hope you understand what I mean 🫣
This is a very prescriptive way of organising pencils, with the Tri-tones your colouring blends will always be exactly the same. I like to make blends on the fly, depending on what I am colouring 😊
Can I just say that I am very new to colour pencils, and I appreciate so much the work that you have done on the tri-tone downloads!! I didn’t really understand the little swatch strips included, but now I have seen this video I TOTALLY get it! I will be finding a printer and a laminator immediately and reorganising my case! Thank you so much for all your hard work on making these systems, so so useful! 😊
Thus is such an amazing way to organize thank you for sharing this and good luck to everyone what a blessing to receive such a beautiful gift thank you Jennifer and Steve, and for all you hard work.
I have almost completed my Prismacolor workbook. I did however, organize my Prismacolor pencils in their case just as you showed in your videos. I love the organization and the simplicity of finding the colors I need. Thank you so much for creating a smart way to be ready to color anything. I have learned so many techniques from you.
So glad I found your YT channel! Such an interesting system for organizing colored pencils! I love the idea of the tags and the order/system. Your little dog is watching you so intently, I feel like she is learning so much and could probably tell us all a thing or two about coloring and organizing!
Hi Jennifer, I enjoyed watching this video again and am so impressed with your color knowledge and organization skills, I've been a member for about a decade, but can't ever seem to enter the Give Aways, because they always direct me to sites that I don't use. RUclips is my only real connection. I used to use Facebook for family, but some kind of glitch started an avalanche of notifications from anyone who addressed anyone who knew a member of my friend or family group even though they weren't addressed to me. I now have over 9,700 emails that I am trying to remove and block, so that I don't keep losing some very important contacts in the clutter. Could you tell us where you got your laminating machine, and where we could find a small vacuuming type device about the size of our rechargeable erasers that can be used on the pencil crumbles on our pages? Some of those smear and stain even when using a very soft, fluffy brush. Also, most coloring books and pencil swatch sheets seem to be coming out on paper as amooth as glass with no tooth to enable layering or pulling color off of our soft wax pencil cores. Is there a way to treat such paper prior to coloring that would give it a little texture without ruining our books? Thank you and Steve for all your hard work and all the knowledge that you both share with us.
I recently got about 50 Caran D’ache Luminance pencils & I can’t believe there is no nice true pinks! No bright pastel pink & no bubble gum pink! 😕 2 of my fave colours that I use in pretty much every picture. they all have either a purple or a brownish undertone. Just another reason to love Brutfuner pastels & Holbein 😸however I’ve fallen in love with the luminance white so I def won’t be trading that in for another brand any time soon! You put so much effort into swatching I’m sure it’s greatly appreciated, it takes me HOURS just to get ONE SET into a good order with so much swatching & switching up & more swatching I often end up wondering if it was even worth it.. just to then do it all again with the next brand 🙈 I do love swatching tho, when I’m not bent on trying to get things in perfect order I find it quite relaxing ☺️🦋💘🍭
Hi, which laminator are you using? Please advise. Thanks. Do you have any recommendations for a reasonably priced home use printer that can print out your charts and colouring pages effectively? Thanks for your hard work and I am learning interesting ideas from you.
Quick question:. In this video you go from yellow to yellow-orange, etc, but in my Prismacolors worksheet, it goes from yellow to yellow-green, etc. Just wondering why? Which way is better, in other words, which direction around the color wheel is the best to traverse? Thanks in advance for your answer. Have a great evening.
I’ve got my entries in since the first video. I became a premium member yesterday, because I simply love all your content. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us!
To each their own and if it works for you, great. I wouldn't suggest anyone who wants to understand their pencil colors to use this however. First, even if you just wanted to use a trio system and buy open stock to have a limited set, there are no neutrals at all. Second, it takes all those pencils out of color family order and makes it difficult to know or even understand where they fit within the rest of the colors. Third, it would lead to extremely boring, cut and paste pages where everything looks the same. Put your colors in color family order, from light to dark within each group, and you can choose a variety of related colors at a glance to create a multitude of combinations.

HI, Jennifer! I certainly see the advantage of having the tri tones in separate groups, but because I have no color training at all, I don't know how all three in each set should be fed back into the entire set in the proper place for family color order. I also don't know how to tell in each color, such as yellows, which are warm, and which are cool. I actually saw a company question answerer person tell a customer that all yellow, orange and reds are warm colors, and all greens, blues, and purples are cool colors. That's what all of us who didn't take art were taught in school. This person, however, was supposed to know what she was talking about. Under tones is something else confusing to me. I'm convinced I'll never be able to do faces and skin, because I saw a few tutorials for different skin colors where the teachers were laying down all sorts of different under tone colors, depending on the desired finished complexion color of the face. Apparently, there are color recipes on how to do this. I wish I had more time to learn, but I want to thank you and Steve for all the reviews and tutorials you give on so many products, especially Steve's review on different kinds of paper and what medium each one is best for.
Jennifer....I have a question moreso than a comment this time. Why don't the companies that make colored pencils organize and number them according to the color wheel? I only have Prismacolor and Castle Art sets to go by but from what I see they may organize them according to color but if they do that their numbering system is way off....as in you can't organize by color and have the numbers on the pencils be in the correct order. Prismacolor's pencils numbers are just way out there. Castle Arts if you buy the 120 count...the first 72 pencils are in color order...while the rest after 72 up to the 120 are like a whole brand new set on their own. I don't understand either companies way of how they number/color organize their pencils. Maybe I'm missing something? I want my pencils in color order yet the numbers being all out of kilter in doing so drives me crazy!!
