Update: As of the date of posting this video, I have not heard back from the Nibsmith and at this point, I'm kind of giving up on getting a palladium nib.

It's totally unacceptable they haven't gotten back to you. That's ridiculous. I'm very sorry to hear that.

What a wait! Communication, communication, communication. That's got to be one of the most frustrating thing about working with "vendors" in any field. A simple email or two could avoid so much frustration and disappointment.

I have the exact same pen with a stub nib, very smooth and lovely writer.

I’m sorry that the purchase of your grail pen wasn’t the experience you were hoping for. You deserved better customer service. This is a pen on my wish list as well and I am very grateful that you shared your honest experience - you raise some issues to consider. If I do end up purchasing it, I was planning on using the same digital scale that I use to weigh yarn (probably used by others for more nefarious applications) to weigh ink levels as other commenters have mentioned.

I have had the same experience of purchasing a grail pen and receiving a nib made of a different material than what I bought (according to my invoice), but from a different store (not the Nibsmith). When I complained I got a rude response. I feel for you!

I got mine from Goulet in January and it was on sale BECAUSE it had the palladium nib and they only produce gold ones now (from what I understand). I didnt read up on the issues before hand, but luckily, everything works smooth on mine. Good luck finding a palladium nib!

I had the exact experience when I received my Visconti Homo-Sapiens Crystal Dream - The tines were misaligned and required some work and a fair bit of polish to get it to write smooth. It writes nicely now but the experience was not what I was expecting. I expected to have the "wow" factor upon first pen to paper but was met with skipping and rough scratchiness.

I have exactly the same pen with a Palladium nib. I took mine apart and flushed it as it was skipping, and boy did some gunk come out of it. It now writes beautifully. As to ink usage, I tend to fill it every 10 or so pages of A4. Seems to do the trick for me.

I have the Palladium nib. It is wonderful. I like ink windows, but I would not want one interfering with the beautiful look of my Bronze Age.

Great looking pen with the all black trim. Good to see the custom grind turned out well.
I have a feeling that if you were to go through sending it back to Nibsmith for a palladium nib (assuming one was available) you'd be waiting several months more for the turnaround.

I also got this as my Grail Pen back in April. Love the pen. also had the same issue with the realization that i cant see how much ink i have. I found i was able to write about 6 a5 pages before it started skipping bc it was out of ink. I bought the ink well so i could have some idea of how much ink is in there and allow for a completely full fill. To test the inkwell i used a demonstrator vac fill and it filled it comletely up! Since its new i havent been able to test how many pages i get now but it might help some?

Visconti Homo-Sapiens Skylight. As far as I know this pen has two view windows + a window wear the black or brass ring is.
Hope this was helpful to you.
    Cheers ☕️☕️

Honestly, I have 2 palladium nibs and 2 gold nibs in HS pens, and I much prefer the gold ones. Beautiful pen, enjoy it!

Maybe mark a line on your ink bottle to see how much it takes in? Someone else said to weigh the pen before and after, but you’d need a sensitive scale, I’d think.

    Beautiful!!!
Reddit or Facebook market would be good places to look for a Pd nib.
Around 3:30 you stated that the nib was a medium cursive italic and around 13:30 you stated and wrote that it was a fine cursive italic.
I would recommend getting a Visconti Traveling Inkwell. The pen could fit into a Pineider Pen Filler but the Hook safe threads cannot pass through the opening so ink would likely spill out.
If you would like to better visualize how the power vac filling mechanism works, I would recommend watching videos with TWSBI vac 700s or Pilot 823s.

It is actually fine cursive italic-but writes more like a medium.

I regularly use my HS with the Pineider travel inkwell. No problem at all.

I bought this pen 2 years ago in the same trim and with the 18K gold nib, its been the best pen ever for me, the looks, the performace, the weight; happy to see that you feel the same about it although you wanted the palladium nib.
Regarding the ink window, imo youre better off without, the pen is simply more beautifull without windows.
I bought a Visconti travel inkpot (works perfect if you dont overfill it) so if you run dry, its filled in a minute.
Have you ever bought the King of Pens?, its on my list of pens if i ever get bored with the HS.

    • @MysteryArts
      @MysteryArts  10 месяцев назад

I ended up getting the best of both worlds by getting a second hand palladium nib (which I put on the visconti) and used the gold nib on a hand turned pen using an adapter from Flexible Nib Factory. To answer your question, I did end up getting a King of Pen because I got a great deal. I have a video on that here: ruclips.net/video/hJw6iBXqayY/видео.html

You’ve got a beautiful pen there. Enjoy ! I have five HS's and they’re wonderful pens. I’ve had excellent experiences with both the palladium and gold nibs. I’m stunned to hear about Dan Smith. Customer Service used to be his trademark asset. I have many a handwritten note from Dan saying, “ if you’re not 100% satisfied don’t hesitate to let me know.” What has happened with him ???

@@MysteryArts Wow. This is a flagrant change in the way he used to do business. He was attentive and fastidious. I cringe to think his customer service has diminished. He’s a fine fellow.

No ink window would be a deal breaker for me these days. When I used only one pen in college many years ago an ink window wasn’t even a thing because you learned from experience when to fill. The only thing I can think of without the window is to weigh it??

  • @wesdenham282
    @wesdenham282 3 года назад

Ink check method: Pour ink into small plastic beaker marked in ml. After filling your pen from the beaker, you will see how much is left, and by extension, how much is in your pen. 1 oz beaker might do.

My wife and I love the channel … a bad purchasing experience can taint the feel of ownership. It definitely makes me think twice about Nibsmith. Wondering if you will do something with the replaceable top medallion on the cap? Be safe and great content!

These pens must be cursed. I got one 2 years ago with palladium nib but it did not write well, so I had it tuned. Then it started leaking from the barrel so bad as to be unusable, so it was exchanged. The second pen also leaked from the barrel too, so I got a refund. After 2 years I still missed it, so I bought one again and love it. No leaks and better quality. I can say I greatly prefer the 18k gold nib to the palladium nib, which felt more like a regular old steel nib.

    • @MysteryArts

It is a fabulous pen. I did end up replacing the nib with a palladium one that I found second hand. But I still use the gold nib that came with it on another pen and it writes beautifully. If it is in your budget, I would say go for it.

OMG, you waited for that many months and still could not get exactly what you wanted. That's unfortunate. As you have received this already, please enjoy the writing experience. At 500 dollars, it's a great deal though. 😊

I mean no disrespect with what I say next, but I really dislike the quick brown fox thing. I think all of the pen reviewers ought to choose a unique writing sample for each individual review. Perhaps a famous saying from a famous person who You admire and respect. Oh and if You want to find out what the amount of ink is in the pen, then get a highly sensitive scale and weigh the pen when it's completely empty and then weigh it with ink, do some math and then there You go. And by the way I think You make great video's and I'm planning on watching more! God bless You and Yours 💕 and Merry Christmas!

Personally I don't believe you should have to buy a palladium nib for you pen. If they never got back to me, I'd raise some Cain, but also if your invoice states one thing, and you received another with no compensation, I believe that's a mess up entirely on them.

Generally a good video but one minor issue, over half of it was spent talking, I think it’d be better swapping the timing and instead doing a writing sample first and then talking about it after.
