A day in the life of a Service Plumber (#1)

- Here's our first of many day-in-the-life-of videos. We'll bring these to you every now and again to show just how random our days can be. On this day we installed an American Standard toilet that a customer had picked out. We installed two customer supplied Moen faucets. We re-lit and diagnosed an issue with a Bradford White water heater and then ordered a new repair part. We cleared a clogged drain line and diagnosed an issue with an old sewer line. Lastly, we repaired a defective sump pump discharge pipe. This is just another example of how random our day's can be. We never know what we're walking into each day but we're always prepared for whatever the day may bring.

After working in the plumbing trade for 58 years! My dad would say you get your hands dirty but the money is clean ! And we put our faces where everyone puts their AZZ !😂
Exactly!
I'm white collar and considering switching to a blue collar job like plumbing. Yes, it can be physically demanding work but sitting a cubicle staring at a computer is rotting my brain.
I've done both and I enjoy meeting people and solving their problems.
You really have to take care of your body. Mobility exercises and nutrition will make you a well oiled machine.

Love it!
Damn in ny it's 7 years
How much do you make?
You should never be allowed to open a business with just 2 little years of experience. Where do you live?
In 2 years no one knows enough to be a plumber much less own a plumbing company!
Seriously considering switching from my office job to plumbing. Being able to work with my hands seems like it would be really rewarding.
Well I love it!

The video production is on point! As a previous videographer I’m impressed with the investment you’ve put into your work documentation. Keep up the great work. I interviewed today as a plumbing helper sick of a desk job went to school for business and looking for a career change working hands on.

Little trick on those sensors if you undo the nut and break off the tiny sensor wiring then slide that thermistor as far into the thermostat as you can then tighten it back up and it’ll keep working. Most of them will work that way forever. Rheem must’ve had a bad bunch bc I’ve had the same issue a lot here lately even on my new installs.
Good tip!
I came to say the same thing. Had a seasoned tech suggest that to me randomly. Haven’t tried it yet but in theory it’ll work just fine

Yeah those are a pain in the butt!
I have an interview next week for an apprenticeship! Wish me luck !!
This is awesome to hear! Let us know how it goes!
how'd it go?
Great video and production to showcase a day in the life. I do have a question though, are you paid hourly or on a per-job basis? I'm only starting to look into all the trades to see which, if any, pique my interest since being an automotive technician didn't work out for me.
Plumbers can be paid in many ways. Hourly, salary, per task, are all common ways.
Is automotive technician a good job? Because it seems like an interesting job to me, but I’ve seen a bunch of people on the internet who say it isn’t really that good
I'm a woman looking to take classes for plumbing next fall. My grandfather was a plumber and also into carpentry, any tips? Thanks!
Skip the classes and just get a job at local plumbing shop. You'll get paid to learn that way.
If you took classes and get a certificate or a degrees you will get paid a lot more
So I guess you have better advice than the professional
You won’t get paid more if any at all if you’re taking classes. You also don’t get paid more in the long run even if you have taken classes. Don’t listen to that guy. Go get a job at your local plumber/plumbing company and learn that way. You can also start to build up your customer base on the side while you’re working for another company. I’d start doing it even before you have your license. When you do get it and you’re ready take the leap and don’t turn back. Work for yourself. Once you make enough money and have steady income get insurance ASAP and go start passing out your cards to contractors, apartments managers, anywhere you can think of. You’ll make a doctors salary within your first 4 years if you’re good with people. Best decision I’ve ever made. Little warning though, you work nonstop. When you get off of work you’re still working and overthinking about work but still it’s way better than having a boss and you’ll make really good money.
@@codygooch510wow that’s actually a good way to make your journey, congrats man!!
I use a bucket as my tool bag to. People look at me weird 🤣

Are plumbers able to make more than electricians? And can plumbers move at a quicker pace?
That's all going to come down to the individual and to what field you choose. Both are great options though!
What’s that tool call that you remove the water from the toilet? It’s so practical
It's called The Last Drop suction gun.

Wet vac works perfectly
@@leeyeley9863 indeed it does. I have one now but didn't when we shot this video.
Just order a pack of the oatey gel packs. You pour into toilet the water turns to gel then when you’re finished moving the toilet you just flush it down the drain. Lifesavers those things are.
Shop vac cordless to be precise.
Good luck
Luck is simply preparation meeting opportunity.
Nice work I’m looking to become a plumber possibly I’m 23 I should been started though
It's a great trade!
Thinking about doing plumbing when I go to trade school heard it makes a lot of money got any tips?
My biggest tip would be to avoid trade school and just get a job at a plumbing company that's willing to hire somebody with no experience. You'll learn just as fast but you'll learn from people actually doing the work rather than people that are just teaching a class. You'll also get paid to learn instead of pay for trade school.

I am studying HVAC right now and plumber is one of the jobs I could have. I just have some basic questions. Compared to other HVAC trades where'd you put it on a 1-10 difficulty scale, what does the pay look like, what days do we usually get off?
Difficulty will depend on your natural mindset. Some find HVAC easier and some find plumbing easier. Pay will be great with either one. Pay will be better if you get into the service and sales side of either industry.
Days off will depend on your employer. We work M-F 8-5. No on-call and no weekends.
Hvac you’re going to be in attics quite a bit. Covered in insulation and absolutely cooking. Plumbing ( service side ) you’re going to be in some pretty gross bathrooms, kitchens , basements etc.. I started at a company doing both but I found plumbing to be a lot more lucrative. Especially when you finally understand Drain , waste and vent and can do remodels or new construction. Throw in a little heating knowledge and depending where you live you can be making easy 150-200k a year if not more over time.
I used to work in H.R in the supply chain industry, which took massive hits in revenue during and after covid. Plumbing started as a fascination the first time I paid a plumber to put new water lines in a home I was flipping. Turned into my main source of income working for a great company that is eager to train. My job includes elements of mechanical engineering and electrical as well, so the sky is the limit on what you will be exposed to.
Way to grow!
Hey Gregman, I'm also in the supply chain industry and looking into switching to a career in the trades. I know very little about plumbing (basics really) but I am extremely interested in learning and making it my life. I am trying to find a company that will take me in.
@@rules9387 find a large company in your area with a training program.
@@rules9387 You shouldn't have any problem getting started as an apprentice for any sizable company. Average starting is around 18 an hour here. It's not enough to support a family but you'll quickly learn enough to start helping friends and family with side jobs. If you work full time, you should be ready for Journeyman test by two years in, and you should expect an 8-10 dollar raise upon licensing. More raises for certifications like backflows and water treatment systems. If you go hard for 5 years you can get a master plumber license and your value increases another large margin... All of the cool skills, places and people you will meet and help along the way open all sorts of other doors. And when I'm working, time FLIES by. I actually enjoy plumbing as much or more as I did playing with LEGOs as a kid.
These toilets that take a single Bolt from tank to bowl are sketchy. Had one leak 2 days after installing and screwed up drywall on ceiling underneath. After this I decided to use aftermarket tank to bowl kits that bolt the gaskets to tank directly. 1st major issue in 25 years. No exaggeration
Yeah some toilets these days are kinda sketchy.
How much can you make with plumbing after all expenses? Reply plz
It all depends on how much value you provide and what you charge.
Any guess like how much can a average person can make ?
@@chdaudAhmed most good plumbers in the US are making $60-90k per year.
Do you do heating and air conditioning?
Nope! Just plumbing.
I’m considering being a plumber but I have digestive issues, what do you guys do when you’re at a customers home and you have to go to the bathroom? I’m sure for number one if worst comes to worst then you grab a bottle or something but what happens when it’s number two? Lol
Great question! Some will avoid using their restroom but I don't worry about it. If they plumber can't use the customers restroom, then there's a problem. Using the restroom is something everyone does. So use it and be courteous while you're doing so.
Just tell 'em you're testing out the pipes! 😊
Damn this is pretty cool

Are you paid hourly or commission per job???
We are paid on the number of task hours associated to each task we perform. The faster we can complete each task, the more we make per hour.

Hello sir I have a big problem and can’t seem to figure it out. Toilet doesn’t flush, called a plumber he pulled and augured the toilet, he went 75 feet in the main drain. That did not work so he augured the kitchen sink, and washer drain tube because they all run on the same line “kitchen to washer to toilet to bathroom sink to shower then out to the city”. Still did not work and he basically gave up. Now the next day “yesterday” I had another plumber come out he pulled and augured the toilet and ran 150 feet down the main to the city network. “Nothing” he just kinda left said he will do some research after doing another call somewhere else. Never heard from him. I heard maybe it might be a vent problem so after youtube I went to the roof and put a garden hose down the vent and with a jet nozzle flushed it for a few minutes. Then I had about 10 perfect power flushes in the toilet. I thought I fixed it and went to sleep and woke up and it flushed about 2 more times and then it stopped flushing again. I forgot to mention yesterday after the 2nd plumber left I installed a brand new toilet myself with a perfect insulation everything went perfectly installing it. So now I am $600 down with no results. When I ran the washer and dishwasher water started backing up in the kitchen. Any thoughts you might have with be much appreciated. Thanks for your time
Sounds like they aren't resolving what's causing the drain line to clog. Either a problem with the piping or a problem with what is going down the line. Or both. They need to run a sewer camera to learn what's causing the issue.
@@SmedleyPlumbing Thanks for the reply. So about 10 minutes ago we heard a big swoosh and it sounded like something cleared the line. The toilet and all the drains drained. Now the toilet flushed 2xs so far. It is also storming outside.
@@lcplricky sounds like it may have been a soft clog where the auger runs through the clog but only partially clears the line. Still needs a camera to verify the cause of the clog.
