  • How to find jeans that fit? What are the perfect jeans for your body type?
    In this video I explain what to pay attention to when shopping for jeans (waist, hips, thighs, length...), which type of jeans work for which body type and what to do if you can't find any pair of jeans that fit you.
    This try-on video is not sponsored by Levi's.
    Though Levi's, if you read this, let's design a capsule collection together. Call me? :-)
    Thumbs up if you liked this video!

      I know I'm not the only woman with a belly-bigger-than-hips and I don't find normal jeans! I have to wear maternity jeans but the good ones are more expensive 😳 Also I can't have a tight jeans directly on my belly. Have you ANY suggestions for such a Problem? (i'm a European size 42/44)

      Greetings. In addition to fit, a discussion on denim material would also be useful since it affects the fit, look, and wear.

      Hi, I have the same problem. I once got Gap maternity jeans (!) but now I get jean jeggings. They are not leggings - they are denim but they have wide band fitted elastic at the waist. No zipper, which I prefer - I don't need anything else making my stomach look bigger! These leggings are very flattering. You just can't tuck in a top because the elastic would show. I get them here in England from Marks & Spencer. They are not expensive but are excellent quality. Sorry to write so much! (Great video Justine, thank you.)

    You have completely destroyed for me the myth about sizing and made me understand the disparity among brands sizes and the way factories differ in the way they make the clothes. I cannot thank you enough, something valuable to teach my little girls, because of you they will never be focused on a particular size but to a fit. What a gift, Justine!!❤️

      Justine Leconte officiel, Absolutely! I just gave a pair of straight leg Old Navy jeans to my niece. I wore them one day, and they were still tight and uncomfortable on my thighs by the end of the day. The lighter wash even made my thighs look huge. On the other hand, I would never part with my dark wash straight leg Levi's.

    Ur forgot to mention rear pockets placement. Fast fashion especially cheap jeans place large rear pockets low which makes ur butt look saggy. This can be seen at any mall in the US.

      Ingrid Morbid. Not only do you need to be properly fitted (I have it done once a year) you need to try the bra on either at the store or at home (keep tags on) and then pull on a blouse where the fabric shows everything. I have quite a few solid lace bras but omg they look terrible when wearing a slinky t-shirt or sweater over them. I made sure to buy 3 t-shirt bras (3 different colors) just for that purpose. Learning how to figure out your size is actually quite easy, I've forgotten how exactly since I don't do it myself, but you need a flexible tape measure. It's something similar to this. You measure just under the bust to get the size (32,34,36,etc) and then measure around the fullest part of the bust. Each inch after the 1st measurement you took is the cup size. That's the part where I can't remember the exact sizes? Personally I prefer a dept store with a well trained staff as they know which bras run bigger or smaller and what would look/work best for you/me. Good luck!

    Hi Justine! Thanks for posting this video. I have always struggled with jeans; I usually find ones that offer comfortable movement and have the waists taken in. My question is about my figure:
    I'm pretty much a rectangle/athletic (*clears throat* with a some weight added) but I have a large bust and narrow shoulders, with heavy upper arms. When I was working out, my proportions shrank but didn't alter and I struggled to shrink my bust/upper arms. What kind of shape should I be focusing on when I shop for or make my clothing? Style is challenging! Thank you.

    This is very informative! Thank you!though I was so frustrated with Jeans shopping (I have a hard to fit figure AND specific wishes to the garment I am to spend money on), I started to drape a jeanspattern on myself. My bum curve is huuuuuge... And this curve got more straight in stores for years now, no wonder everything digged painfully in my stomach.I really am lucky to be able to sew these things up myself nowadays. Pants that pinch painfully in the flesh are a thing of the past now

    I would appreciate your input on the trend of, ripped jeans, distressed jeans, rugged jeans, destroyed jeans, busted jeans or shredded jeans. A teenage member of my family has a favorite pair of destroyed jeans, which are (in my opinion) borderline obscene. Insight and comments from a professional, like yourself, might be able to give helpful and truthful comments offering enlightenment on how to have a creative approach with jeans without unwittingly advertising oneself as someone practicing the world’s oldest “profession.” Thank you.

    I could never find good pants and they always feel limiting and uncomfortable. That's why I started wearing almost only dresses and skirts. It works perfectly for my part shaped body. It highlights my little waist and hides my what I call underbuttfat I think it's also called saddlebags or something like that?
    A big plus. You can hide your foodbaby perfectly and tights just feel like sweatpants in winter.
    You look always chic and put together and people don't believe me when I tell them my actual weight or they see me in underwear. My appearance looks that different:D I am so happy o learned that quite early and built a wardrobe around that for the past years. Once in a while I want to wear a pair of pants though. So thank you for your help on this video I will keep it in mind on my panthunt :D

    Hi Justine, what do I need to do when jeans never fit right when I sit down? I always have to wear high waisted jeans since low and mid rise jeans doesn't seem to cover anything when I sit down and fall lower so I have to keep pulling them up. Jeans that fit my waist becomes too tight on my stomach when I sit down but if I size up then the waist is always too big when I stand up.

    I'm a guy, but I really don't like men's jeans. They are either too lose or too tight. I think I could look good in women's jeans with straight leg. Do you think they are too tight in the crotch for me or would it work? I would like to highlight my thin legs and waist to give my shoulders a bit more "power". Generally I want to go for a more feminine, slick and "model-like" look. Do you think ths is the best way to go about it? I mostly wear chino pants with straight legs and looser tees. if I swap the chinos with denim, would it look good? Enough questions! I really like your videos, because even tho I can't use all the information, you always say why and how something works so I can come to my own conclusions.

    I hope you may be able to answer even after your helpful video I do appreciate but I'm still struggling I'm inverted triangle which is probably the worst shape to have I'll bear in mind the drop waist as I have 1 pair of this and it works around the whole hips body bum thighs area but as a woman of 47 with a inverted triangle shape I feel also high waisted are better fit around that area but I am not really happy with every straight leg for jeans I own it makes me look somewhat masculine and the skinny around the calf is always wayyyy to skinny I have some Asda jeans that fit perfect at top but is almost qute tight on my clafs is this wrong at age 47 I do feel jeans are quite flattering for a cheap store pair but they are good quality thick and stretch every straight leg pair is usually a disaster and end up looking shapeless and other ones I look absolutely awful in as I am very skinny around legs and bum it's just the tum makes me size 12 because of peri pause meanou pause and then I am like the largest bust size can you do a vid on jeans for this type shapes woman also with short legs and petite and 5"3 in height I'm having nightmares kinds wishes 💜

    As a 5 foot and an inch woman, super petite and small, all the normal pants, jeans or jegging will still be longer than my feet in which I will have to fold it always, thus I will go for the 3/4 pants and jeans or capri jeggings because it fits perfectly on my feet without having the need to fold it. Lmao. Short people problem.

      I’m short waisted with a tummy and “dip hips.” I NEVER wore jeans that fit comfortably and flattered my figure until high rise jeans and pants became fashionable. Mid rise styles always “bite into” my waist and are slack and sloppy in the lower hip/thigh. They looked unattractive but were also extremely uncomfortable to wear.
      No “fashion/style advice” works perfectly for everyone.

Sometimes I feel really guilty when I am jumping from RUclips video to RUclips video, --wasting time --but when I tune in to her videos, it is time well spent, I feel as if I am really gaining excellent information that I can actually use in my every day life. Thank you for this explanation.
    Could you please make a tutorial on how to determine denim's quality?
    I have weird experiences with super cheap Pimkie jeans lasting for over 7 years, and $150 Lee getting torn in a year. As well as other way around.
    I also suspect expensive jeans to be fake sometimes, and have no idea how to determine it.
    Thank you for all your videos, they're very useful 😊

    • @julijakeit
      @julijakeit 7 лет назад +47

      Natu, famous brands can hardly guarantee quality these days. Look at the seems - the smaller the sewing print of the seams the better, best of all - seems look invisible unless that is intentional style and they look robust. I bike a lot and have to make sure the color will not fade around my bum, so I slightly scratch the material. I had seen Guess jeans for 200 $ that died my finger nails instantly. Some brands now warn people about extra care their clothing need. Check how flexible the material is itself, especially at the knees as poor quality material will expand around the knees and make pants look years older. Like you, I own a pair of jeans I bought still at college from 2nd hand and they are still my fav winter jeans.

    • @c1re5an
      @c1re5an 7 лет назад +8

      julijakeit I never thought about scratching it, I'll try it next time. I found my perfect jeans in Calzedonia two summers ago (jogging with a perfect fit and very elastic, but with a sturdy look) and I got them in 4different colors, as backups, in case they only lasted me a year. But so far the first 2 ones are going strong. I'll do this scratching test on them!

      Yes, but if your size is an European 50, you are pear-shaped with a quite big belly, it is impossible to find jeans that fit. When I was a bit younger and thinner, I could by a pair and have it reworked at the waist (always to large at the back). But now, I can find a pair of jeans any more... the only jeans I find contains too much stretch, almost only a lot of synthetic fiber, they don't last, and are inconfortable.

Levi's, for example has plus sizes with a lot of different shapes and fits. I think Justine's advices really apply for all figures, you just have to be patient and try on a loooot of pants ;)

      A good rule of thumb, with a caveat:
      Surgery can affect fat distribution beneath the skin by creating 'breaks' where incisions lie and altering the shape. I say this because I have had cesarean section surgery and my lower abdomen now has a sharp crease, resulting in my stomach folding over itself, adding girth to my lower stomach and affecting how my undergarments lie on my body, which also impacts the fit of my clothing. While my upper body and thighs haven't changed, pregnancy and surgery have altered the shape of my lower torso significantly. I am effectively a near-apple, though before I was a busty rectangle.

    I'm a very tall (180cm) pear shape with a big butt but a small waist, and I literally don't own a single pair of pants that fit properly 😩 I feel the need to go with high waisted pairs because they prevent my butt from spilling out when I sit down (lol), but they're always too wide around the waist when they fit my full thighs, butt and hips. Lower waists just give me a muffin top. Ugh. The STRUGGLE. To be honest, most of the time I just give up and wear skirts.

      Rikke the struggle is REAL!!! I think pants have changed, or maybe the fabric. I can only wear slacks/trousers and I still have to try dozens of pairs before finding ones that fit properly. I haven’t found a pair of jeans that don’t stick out in the back in over a decade. Something changed in the fashion industry for this to be a problem for multitudes of women worldwide. It’s not the shape of the women, it’s the designs.

    As a pear shaped women it's always recommended that we wear boot cut BUT I find that it just adds excess fabric volume to my lower half and I end up looking more bottom heavy than I already am! Not only that but boot cut jeans are out of fashion at the moment... making me feel too 2000's (and not in a good way).

    • @raraavis7782
      @raraavis7782 7 лет назад +42

      Ingrid Bennett Yeah, I don't agree with that one either! I'm long legged with narrow hips and bootcut or straight leg looks WAY better on me than skinny jeans. I should be someone who looks great in them, but they make me look 'top heavy' (broad chest/shoulders) while wider legs make my figure appear more balanced.

      It's funny when recommendations go awry, I've heard the same thing too but I think the style that looks best on me as a pear is a trouser or wide leg (but not a huge wide leg). I think an issue with the bootcut is does the part where it starts to flare fall with where your knee actually is, not in the right spot definitely makes it look off. Ultimately if you like something, try it on, it's the best way to see if it works for your particular body.

    I have big butt and big thighs, and I'm petite. It's such a pain trying to find pants that don't make me look short and fat. Straight cut always makes my legs look like chimneys, and boot cut makes me look really short. Even the Levi's bold curve is too short on the back, they squish my butt flat and wide. I always have to go back to a stretchy skinny jeans with pockets just right. After a decade of just riding on the old jeans that still fit, I finally found Lucky Jeans midrise and highrise jeans (Ava, Lolita and Brigitte), and they fit amazing.
    I can finally repurpose my jeans instead of fixing that hole in the butt. 😂

I cannot tell you how pleased I am! Like you I have an ample bottom, my thighs are fuller, and I'm petite. Finding a pair that actually cover my backside and don't do that dreaded slide when I sit or bend is beyond fantastic. Thank you for the recommendation!

    I hear people complain all the time that fashion is catered to tall, thin women. As one myself, I don't understand this complaint at all! I always have so much trouble finding jeans that fit me in length and at the waist. If the waist fits, they're too short, or if they're long enough, the waist is super big. It's like brands think that as you get taller, everything else gets bigger too. That's not always true!!

      I have the opposite problem as I’m only 5 feet & 1inch tall& even some “petite” jeans are too long in the leg. I can get them altered but sometimes it ruins the overall shape. Also generally here in Australia there seems to be less choice available for petite women.

  • @tomatenmagnet
    @tomatenmagnet 7 лет назад +186

    some advice for my tall ladies out there. Go shop in the men's section! The cut isn't any different. Not even in the crotch. Except that a women's 34 length is never long enough for me but a men's 34 fits perfectly. And if you'd prefer a tighter leg that's super easy to fix yourself. There are plenty of tutorials out there. Another upside to men's jeans is that they have bigger pockets and are often cheaper.

    • @Avrysatos
      @Avrysatos 7 лет назад +22

      They're also often built more durable, which is super important if you're going to put down $$ on clothes. Getting stuff that lasts longer is always better. Though, I've always had to get them tailored to fit my waist because most mens jeans don't have enough curve for me. That's a minor thing really.

      Gloria J. Pinsker I honestly never had a problem with that and my body definitely doesn't have a ruler shape. I think men's bodies are a bit more diverse than that. And many jeans have stretchy fabrics which might make a difference as well. It's worth trying some on either way.

    Hello/ Bonjour Justine ,
    I am french like you but will post my comment(s) in English since your growing audience seems to be English speaking . Great video as usual , your videos are always delivered in a highly structured and informative manner ...yet friendly and straight to the point about fashion, trends , French ways etc...so well done ! I never / rarely comment on videos and i had to register and get a youtube profile just to leave you a comment and congratulate you :-) In fact i wanted to comment on the video you've made on the 5th of july about how to start a business , which is similar to the subject of your first video you've made when you started this channel , which purpose was to make a journal of your journey as a young designer launching her business ...and in between you seem to be adding so many advices on clothes, fashion and so much more ...There's something you do not mention in your video about how to start your business and "market it" ...for instance i was wondering how you've managed to turn this channel since your first video into such a success 175 000 abonnés , that's not a small number ! Félicitations...could you be kind enough to reflect perhaps on what / how you've managed that ? which video perhaps helped to bring you an audience in the jungle of all the youtubers talking about fashion and beauty etc...plus in your first video which introduced your channel you've explained and offered to share a sort of step by step journey / journal on you building your business and fashion line? which somewhat has turned into one of the most informative and well researched channel on fashion , clothes, trends etc...anyway CONGRATULATIONS / mes félicitations les plus sincères ...a bientôt et merci de partager avec nous d'une façon aussi claire et intelligente sur des sujets variés ...vous avez vraiment un style très personnel de présenter ces sujets ...and straight to the point ! Si je parviens à écrire et compléter tout ce que j' aimerais faire and "achieve" avec mon blog , je ne manquerais pas de mentioner votre chaine et certaines vidéos bien précises ..pourquoi refaire ce qui est déjà si bien fait ;-)

    I don't know if you experience the same struggle as me, but whenever I'm on the hunt for a good pair of jeans I always run into the same problem: I have a tiny waist (only 58cm), but my hips and bum are 93 cm, because I am an athlete and grew a fair amount of muscle in that region. And my jeans almost never ever fit me perfectly on the waist AND my hips/legs, I usually have to alter them myself (which is not a problem) or sacrifice one for the other

Definitely not perfectly, but better than many others, so maybe those could be something for you. Apart from this gap at the back that's still there even then, the cut sadly varies a lot with them (I've tried on four jeans of the exact same model and size in different colours and only one fit me well enough to keep it, but that's a win because I've been trying to find jeans for an eternity)

    Very helpful information! I bought a pair of Levi’s skinny jeans in Portugal many years ago. They were PERFECT. Once I returned home to Ireland and tried to get a second pair, I was informed that the style I had gotten in Portugal was only sold in Latin America, Portugal and Spain, bc the cuts were made slightly different in those markets, to suit curvier shapes, while the “same” skinnies here in Ireland were cut for narrower waists and leaner bottoms 😪 I’m Colombian, so that’s my story 😉

    The position and size of the back pockets can help you make your bottom and hips look slimmer, I like good size pockets fairly close together. I think you should have mentioned as well what type of denim as well. I am a full hourglass (there is 30cm at least between my hips and waist) and the only jeans that fit are the one with some elastane to give them a stretchy feeling. Otherwise I cannot even pass a jeans through my bum :p High waist is also better for hourglass (on me they end up being middle waist lol) because they enhance the waistline.

      Justine:
      An idea for your business.
      You mentioned that patterns are regional... I am a French Canadian women, who lives in Denmark. My daughter has my body shape (petite hourglass). In Denmark, the patterns are OBVIOUSLY made for ruler shaped and inverted triangle women. This type of pattern does match the most common body types around here.
      Now that my daughter is an adult, like me, it's fairly easy to find clothes that will fit, since we are not too short either. However, from the age of 9 to 12, clothes shopping was a nightmare. The pants for girls here have no room for the bum, AT ALL. Just try shopping for clothes with a child, who experiences that not only things don't look right, but they hurt if she can zip them up and tie the button. She was literally screaming and crying in the dressing room. It took hours to find one pair of pants, and we had to do it all over again after a short amount of time, because she was still growing (horizontally).
      If you feel like making children clothes and selling them online, clothes that actually fit slowly growing curves in Europe, I think there would be a market.
      Financially, I used to try to find the cheapest pants possible, because we would need to buy new pants every 3 to 6 months for 3 or 4 years. We tried shopping in more expensive clothes stores, the problem still occurred. Also, the rare jean we could potentially find in such a store was so expensive that it was prohibitive to buy new ones 3 months later. So, a good fitting pair, with room for the growing hips of a 9 year old, could cost as much as these more expensive pants as long as they are roomy enough to last a reasonable amount of time. Room to let the hip bone grow. :-)

      Maybe there are good children clothes brands available online nowadays, but it might be worth investigating.
      My daughter didn't want to wear dresses or skirts either, because all the other girls wore pants. :-/

    Could you recommend/ name a few brands that do only jeans and do it well? I really want to shop somewhere that only sells jeans but I don't know any brands! Thank you :)

      Ana The reader Hi...I also wasn't aware there are stores that only carry jeans...
      Bought a pair online from Macy's last week, and I HATE them- even though they're the same size as my other jeans, these are TIGHT on me.
      Thanks to Justine, now I know why!!
      P.S. You look beautiful, Justine! !🤗

    Other than diet and exercise, what do you recommend for those of us with a stomach and saddlebags? Thanks for all of your tips.

      I am wondering the same question! I've never been to a jeans-specialized store before, but would like to give it a go, since it's so hard to actually find something that fits...

      I think she was talking about brands specializing in jeans, not necessarily entire shops. Examples of denim brands would be Levi's, Pepe Jeans, Lee, Diesel, True Religion, G-Star, 7 for All Mankind... Lots of compartment stores have denim sections where you have lots of brands, cuts and sizes.

      I was wondering the same. The only one I know is levis here in Colorado. I have given up on jeans and just get men's 501, or 505's. I have learned so much from your videos Justine, I even educate my 21 year old daughter, thank you.

    Bootcut jeans with spandex are really the only option for fuller figure sized women. They give you balance with your shape and movement with your body.

    I was a huge fan of the bold curve Levi's jeans as I am something of an extreme pear, but Levi's stopped selling them in shops over a year ago and now I checked and I can't even get them online anymore in Europe. Does anyone know of other brands or models that could replace them?

      I know!! The Levi's demi curve was my perfect fit. First pair of pants I could wear without a belt. Looked for them again when mine started to stretch out and wear thin this past year. Nowhere to be found. :(

      bealittecreative silver brand jeans. They are amazing, I used to buy Levi's supreme curve but they don't make them anymore. Silver brand Suki fit was perfect for me and they carried various inseams and styles.
