Matt, thanks a lot for that. I have an O2A to build that is entirely not quite black but in the very few phots...it's not black. It was painted Matt black to start with though, but sat in the sun, and monsoon of Thailand so.....armed with this hopefully I can do the "Nails" proud. Cheers👍

I think if you want to depict a really grungy black aircraft, filter techniques will be the way to go. Lay very thin, transparent layers of lighter colors over black. I think the best technique for this will not be the airbrush, but the classic "a dot of oil and then spread it with a soft, wide brush wetted with turps.
Yes and no. Oils certainly play a role - even a big one - but I'm a big proponent of weathering starting with the paint. Also, light oils on very dark surfaces can be a real headache, and I think it's better to use them to "curve the shot" rather than be the shot.

I do this sort of.. on my e-flight T-28 .. looks really cool coming in at 120 mph on a low level high speed pass!! Makes the cats find a place to hide 😜

I]m in the process of painting a Westland Lysander in all black (Special operation color) and found this extremely useful particularly as the I wanted to get a different tone with the wings as these were fabric against a metal fuselage. Using MRP 255. When blending other blacks did you thin the paint?
Hey Doogs after watching ur videos the last two nights I think im getting the idea of black basing/marbling lol, just wondering how would further weathering with washes and pigments react with this effect. Any chance u could take next step with washes /pigments and show results. cheers
I could forgive the airbrush noise but the compressor is unforgivable. Get a longer hose to make videos and get that away from the microphone. Anyways thanks for the tips. Looking for inspiration for my sr-71 model I’m starting.
Hi! I'm finding your videos very entertaining and informative, as I will probably be having my first go at black basing with a heinkell He 113 kit, this video was especially interesting as I have quite a lot of R.A.F. WW2 bomber kits in my stash. I was wondering, would basing a kit white for a black finish have a chance of working? Thanks, phil.
foxmulderms heh - they were for a stalled out F-117. But I do generally find mixing slight variations of black and white to be far more hit or miss than messing with greens, browns etc.

Would you apply these principles to a VFX-1 Tomcat, or would you say ‘screw it’, and go with straight gloss black?

Great vid, also pigment count can vary a 'black' even though you have no prior warning on the label in my experience.

Definitely probably - but after I get through these I do want to get a bit of actual modeling out of the way for a bit first!
Sr-71 isn't really black its indigo black in some situations u can notices the very blueish-purple tonality of the paint

Just a thought. You could turn off the compressor. Less anger management issues that way. :)
