Chevy Cruze DIESEL? Low BOOST After Engine Swap...
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 авг 2024
- This oddball Chevy Cruze has a Diesel engine that doesn't run right after being replaced.
One code is set: P003A "Turbo Vane Position Not Learned".
Let's do some research and see why the PCM is not happy about the position of the turbo vane actuator.
And then let's see if we can fix it in the parking lot :)

Very impressive diagnostic in the parking lot - an expensive repair pushed out by a well crafted tweak! Love it when good thinking and imagination avoids parts in the repair :-)
Ivan: your big advantage over most diagnoser’s , is you understand your test equipment very well ! You can stumble over a problem on a vehicle youv’e not seen before, & you are in the right mindset to repair, because again, you can read “ English” & understand it! Great Job Evan !
Unfamiliar systems require an investment in research time. On oddball cars like this I generally charge for research time since I'll probably never see one again haha
You would be one hell of a teacher. You explain complicated stuff so even I can understand it.
Would be? I’d say He is. I’m so far behind on tuition I’m embarrassed!
Thank you for the feedback 🙂👍
There's nothing wrong with a review after you've made a repair. There was a lesson to be learned. Thanks for taking the time to show us what you accomplished!
I like that you are not afraid to try things. That's exactly how I operate as well. Good job
Nice work Ivan, as always, You never cease to amaze Me. 👍👍
Nice repair Ivan. My whole family loves your video's. Thank you
Thank you for bringing us along! I think it was a better video post repair because we’d never see what you’re doing in those small spaces!
Love it when something can be modified to work correctly without buying expensive parts. Not often that happens nowadays! 👍
Small volume diesels are popular in Europe. i personally have a 1.5l diesel that consumes an average of 50mpg. nowadays it means a lot
I have a 2.0 bmw 328D that gets 50mpg too. We have them just not popular I wish they were. It’s $6.75 a gallon now tho
Wish I had that mpg!!!!
Yup, I have a diesel Jag - gets in the low 40's. They are quite rare in the US, mostly because until recently the emissions were crap and, unlike Europe, diesel is significantly more expensive than gas....
Diesels aren't as competitive in terms of fuel economy anymore due to current emissions standards. Older ones were more efficient but also puked out far more soot and NOx than a gas engine.
My 2.4 dose 40 mpg
NPR KING. Knowledge and experience and a claw plier. Ivan you rarely fail to impress.
Ivan logic thinking and out of the box adjusting fixed it again. Kudos.
Ivan: I would like to comment on the Bad ground”
that you had on the Cobalt ! Iv’e ran my own shop for 45 yrs. A comeback after a year &25K miles, I saw that the spark check you did, the engine had 2 different spark plugs in it! Now “if” this guy was a good customer, who put those plugs in it ? A good customer is one you see for all issues, and not a year ago problem! Plus,,, that issue is a GM issue, not yours. Did you just “marry “ that car? Your call not mine ! I would only be good with a 50-50 repair! You test equipment must be “ updated annually” and your brains are Priceless ! Have a great day ! You fixed it Baby !
Great repair Ivan. Bravo !
The no parts needed king strikes again! Great fix , thanks for posting
Not being there makes it difficult to understand, but you made it easier to understand. With everything jammed in there, you need lots of lighting and time to get this one fixed.
Good fix Ivan.
I had a Cruze diesel. It was a good idea, but it was in the shop every 8,000ish miles for emissions stuff. I dumped it after emissions warranty was up and went with a Toyota.
Awesome Ivan! Another sweet npr fix!
The position was "zero shifted" and you brought the zero value down until the "span" was within range. This is basic instrumentation calibration. Nicely done. No parts required, just accurate diagnostic measurements and a good troubleshooting procedures.
Ivan, impressive the way you dialed in that engine using your Pico scope. You've packed a lot into a 10 minute video. I think I'm going to need to watch this one a few more times. Thanks for including the PICO waveforms. Thanks for Sharing!
Total time was 3 hours lol
You are a genius Ivan. Resourceful and able to think on your feet. And modest. Bet that thing now goes like a scolded, or rather scalded cat! 😂🐱👍
It's either a talent, or a gift. Impressive!
"...it's driveable, it's fine, it's reliable.." Well done indeed Ivan!
Great explanations , does not matter If you did it live or not , but it is very important what you show us , though process and data values
No apologies necessary Ivan, at least not for me. You are at least making the vids. This is my exact issue of why I haven't produced any myself for a few months. TIME!! Plus, I edit mine to eliminate idle time, not to mention the 2 language thing. 🙄😭
I love when the shops are thoroughly impressed with the work! You've really gotten quite good on the turbo'ed vehicles, being methodical and using logic. Bravo sir!!! 👏🏻😊🤗
Thanks Cuba! Yeah it's a time management balancing act for sure 😄
Wow, Cruze diesel? I have not seen that anywhere!!! Wow, great diag and fix right in parking lot lol!! Saved customer $$$$ nice job!
Brilliant! Good job Ivan.
Nailed it, and keep doing what you do.
Common problem with those engines vacuum solenoid packs up and the bottom turbo hose splits
Never had one with that turbo problems yet
Good video
Very good diagnostic.I also do diagnostics for a living always a challenge.how do you go about charging customers for diagnostics since every vehicle has different problem and knowing that there are some problems very time consuming. I love diagnostics but some custumer wants prices for diagnosis when we dont even know what kind a problem we are going to be dealing with.Even with good equipment, training end repair information there are still challenges.your input is greatly appreciated, thanks for all the time you take to make videos and let us learn from diferent perspective and approach.
Amazing.....
"Hey, Rocky!!! Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat"!!!!
That was amazing Ivan,,,,
Pretty much a "one chalk mark, $1" situation. Very well done, sir.
Just been to give a second opinion on one of these with oil pump failure, common issue rubbish engine.
Keep up the great content 👌
Nice job Ivan.
Ivan you're The Man
Awesome!!!...man!!... I wish I could get my truck to you Ivan!..you tha man!!👍👍😎
Nice and interesting video, nice the ECU was not hiding inside the dash otherwise it would been a long day!
Dude your next level all day.dam I would have passed on that.but as there alot of small turbos out there today does this translate to gas turbos.great vid
Good thinking!!
I worked on a Chevy Cruise with a 1.7 Isuzu diesel this past week here in the UK, using the same Think Tool Scanner you use, haven’t seen a Cruise with the Fiat Deisel before, but I do know that engine very well as it’s in various cars here.
Dam bud you didn’t even flinch at that k5 🙏🐺
Great job enjoy your weekend
You “Rock” Ivan. ❤️
The beginning of this video, that is a beautiful old Riviera. I had one just like that with the supercharged 3.8. Man I miss that car. My girlfriend at the time took it for a drive one day, and that was it. Got totaled, never saw it again, except at the towyard.
I noticed that, also. I had one and loved it totally.
You will want to watch the next video then for sure 😁
Great cars, Ive worked ona few of them. So much easier to work on than the VW TDIs. Original engine probably blew because the o ring in the oil pan dried out and the oil pump sucked air. I replace them with Viton or HNBR o rings and they last forever. There was a 2nd gen diesel as well. It had the 1.6 Opel engine making 137 HP. Made in 2017, 18, and 19. 17 and 18 had a 6 speed manual option as well. I like the 2nd gens a whole lot better. For one thing they have solenoid injectors which I have the equipment to rebuild, rather than the expensive piezo injectors. The manual is really nice too although they sometimes have slave cylinder issues but that is fixable by taking out the original line, accumulator, and CDV, and replacing it with a 4an hose with quick connect adapters on both ends. The accumulator disintegrates and sends particles into the slave cylinder. The CDV wears out the clutch and doesn't let you shift fast. So it's better just to get rid of both in one go. I'm saving up some money to buy a 6sp manual hatchback later this year. I figure I should buy my own while I can still find one. I believe they only made about 1200 with manuals in total, so they're only ever going to get harder to find and it's just about the holy grail of cars for me. GM, diesel, manual transmission, and a hatchback.
I actually own same year Cruze in the diesel. It's been good. At 130k and started getting lots of emissions issues. It may or may not be getting some "weight reduction" this weekend. Hopefully I can get 250k without any real big issues. Love learning more stuff from all your videos
You won’t be disappointed
Nice Job Ivan, I am also working on a Cruze. Will DM you.
Awesome no parts required repair. Maybe next time you can show us a picture of the turbo from rockauto and explain the repair like you did with that Colorado junkyard motor swap
Nice job
No part required. Kudos.
We have a Cruze diesel -- and love it. Excellent handling (it has a different suspension from the lower Cruze chassis) and that diesel has excellent power. Can't knock the car. Speeding tickets on the Interstate can be a problem... but that's not the car. It's the nut holding the steering wheel.
very impress . stop screw adjust , change turbo by calibration air flow
They were Built by Holden in Australia & the diesel models had trouble with melting pistons so maybe that's why the engine was replaced!
GOOD JOB !!!
Yeah I heard about the diesel but never saw one in person
Driveable/Reliable = Spot On !!
Awesome diag and great Russian repair
I have the 2.4 5 cylinder model of that engine in my croma very good engines
Ivan if I tried what you did with that nut I would have dropped 5 to 10 nuts before I got one started. Was the width of the new nut bigger than the original or smaller? Was it a difference of 1-3MM? Thanks. Incredible fix!
Ingenuity and common sense and a Russin background, maybe learned from your dad makes you who you are. Also, you have great skills and a lot of genius in you, never miss your videos Bill N LI NY
Always interesting. I know the Cruze has a checkered history, and heavens knows I wouldn't buy one, but a couple years ago, I had a Cruze rental up in Maine, and it was a decent car in the sense that it was getting close to 50 MPG, had good space for our luggage, and was comfortable. I have to wonder why GM imported the diesel version from Holden given that the gas engine version was already pretty thrifty, but GM is an inscrutable company.
I travel to Maine bi annually. Observed many Prius there. My comfortable 2014 Prius gets 52 mpg. My 2020 Prius prime is getting 84 mpg. Never again will I buy a GM.
@@davidheinzmann4403 84 mpg only for the first gallon.
@@rusco321 no, if I run straight off the battery it is 133 mpg. If I run straight gas it’s 60 mpg. Over 26,000 miles I’ve averaged 84.1 mpg. The gas equivalent of the electricity cost equals a price of $1.36 gallon.
So does this qualify as "no parts required"? I say when you can fix the problem with random stuff laying around, it does.
It's the same diesel engine that Opel, Vauxhall and Alfa Romeo use. (A20) which is manufactured by Fiat. They aren't to bad, quite common here in the UK and the pull very well from low down, can be a bit complicated though.
No they're not great. Intakes clogged with carbon, runner linkage falls apart. Injector seats blowing, glow plugs that snap off and ECU's craping out. The original GM 2.0 & 2.2 was far far superior if not so refined or economical.
@@timbo19751975 Don't forget about the oil pick up seal!
This is all kind of messed up now PSA and Fiat merged and Opel/Vauxhall was sold to them by GM.
Anything made by fiat is trash bud. Hence dodge.
@@tee2171 Can confirm - owned a Fiat Punto in 2009-2010. Intermittent crank no-start. Could never get to the bottom of it. Not even the dealership had any ideas. Became a "Toyota for life" man as a result of this trauma.
Hello i am having the same problem and cant really seem to fix it installed a new turbo and it still throws an underboost code any help? I am willing to pay at this point just need it fixed
I am not sure, but that is a cardinal chirping. Had a 1981 Saab 900 turbo, waste gate went, but it kept on going for years.
85 days my car has been at the dealer ! You need to go there and show them how to fix it
Interesting! I'd never heard of a diesel Cruze. It's strange that a few odd cars are made like that. I had a friend with a diesel Ford Ranger in the 80's - only one of those I ever saw. Great troubleshooting and repair!
The Cruze isn't one of GMs finest moments.
What is? Mostly over engineered garbage with the cheapest parts China can manufacture.
FIAT engine. Pretty sturdy engines
No one really bought the cruze diesels that's why they stopped making them.
But I've only heard good things about them and great mpg, never personally dealt with them!
Awesome another no parts needed repair.
More common than gas in many parts of the world. And right hand drive!!
Do any of the shops ever offer you a job?
i like the buick riviera looks nice
Great because that's the next diag 😉😁
That engine is also in a Saab and an Opel And Vauxhall
Maybe an endoscopic camera?
Chevy did offer it with the diesel, I think they sold a few dozen.
When one of these show up at the dealer, us techs run and hide. Another orphan GM turd dumped on the service department. Most all parts have been discontinued or intergalactic back order. Why would anyone invest money to replace the engine is beyond crazy.
The glare !!!
Hey Ivan - what is "post russian repair"? xD
Ivan - where can we buy a PHAD t-shirt?
The future PHAD swag store 😁
👍👍👍
*"Post Russian Repair"*
Excellent!
👍NPR Wins Again
But that Buick riviera though!
genius
FIAT for the win 😂😂😂
Let's talk about the SUV doing 50mph with the tailgate open at 2:57
Maybe this one isn't great. But I love a diesel. Unfortunately in the US, the media, Hollywood and Tictok haven't made it trendy to drive a diesel so it will never be popular here. They control what Americans think. I guess thats more for us few that dig diesel powered machines here.
Not many of the diesels made, they were in high demand and hard to find. Fiat engine.
Russian Repairs…. We have those here in California… very scary
Fixed and "made it work for now" are not equal
the turbo is likely what killed the last engine and the "used" one very likely has 1.5 legs sunk into the grave. 🙃
Russian repair? Might that be an invasive procedure?
500k miles easy, 200hp also easy
I hope Chevy did better with this diesel than the shit diesel chevette I grew up with, but apparently not.
The Chevette diesel was an Isuzu diesel. Not powerful by any means, but a solid little diesel. What were you expecting out of a Chevette diesel? They were made strictly for fuel economy.
The newest Chevette would have been from 1987 - which the diesel wasn’t even available on the later years. How do you compare anything that was designed in the 1970’s to a modern vehicle?
@@johnrose3169 I expected it to run which it rarely did. It was by all means the least reliable car I ever owned. It was also the last GM car I’ll ever own.
@@jeffreygoss8109 It was also a $4000.00 car at most when brand new. Hard to compare a Chevette to any modern vehicle.
My 87 Chevette had a 6 year 60,0000 mile power train warranty when I bought it new in December 1986. Crude car with no A/C, but it got me back and forth to work for 15 years when the floor finally rusted through.
I spent $4000.00 for a car that was good reliable transportation for nearly 15 years.
Sorry you didn’t have a good experience with your Chevette.
That was a good repair but it was a little hard to follow the explanation. No disrespect intended. Would have made a better video if you had had time to organize your thoughts a little more before explaining the repair. But I'm sure this video will help someone else with this issue.
How to make a cruze even worse.
Add the word diesel to it.
