On the wintry ground a moment is like forever That creeps to me with the steps of a small cat (/literally: with the feet of a small cat) Here, at the fountain(/source) of my story, I am able/allowed to live Here a violin of tremendous yearning Is painting its everlasting tune Waking the earth with its song (My friend from Finland gave me these for a translation)
I would translate it a bit differently, but honestly it's very very hard to translate text like this from Finnish - so much gets lost in the translation.
PaganArwen, I want to learn this to sing to my grandson when he is born. Thanks so much to you and your friend for a more poetic translation. I know it is difficult to do. I shall use these words for him.
Thank you Marko, thank you all fellow fan translators 🖤💙💝 Do you know of any group/forum/online community that I can join to see these translations being made? I'm a pr0 doing non-artisic texts from English and French into Polish, but I can very well imagine the talent and effort it takes to render a song Finnish-English! You guys deserve at least the same deep bows and roaring applauses that happen after NW shows!!!
Magical Winter / Winter of magic This stage is the most beloved of my children Where the moon is treading on its alleys (/Where is the moon treading on its alleys?) A bent spruce, a summer in the care of The white sea so vast Which, with the wings of a ghost(ly) moon, Arrives to fetch me home
"Some of those things could be interpreted differently, for example the summer in the first paragraph could either be in the care of the spruce or the vast white sea. The sea was conjugated in a way that suggested the summer was in its care even though they were on different lines, so I put it like that. I left a few different options for some of the lines so you can understand the lyrics for yourself better, rather than just getting to hear my interpretation."
Using your interpretation of the literal translation according to you and your friend with the lyrics in the video I created my own interpretation which is close to yours but changes a few things. Here have a look: This stage is the dearest of my children With moonlight walking the alleys A bent spruce, and summer in its care A vast white sea On the wings of a phantom moon Comes to take me home On the wintry ground a moment is forever Creeping forward like a small kitten Here is where the story begins Where a violin echoes the eternal melody of yearning Waking the earth with its song
people is really hard to translate a song especially if it's from another language i translate songs English to Spanish and i have to change some sentence structures or use synonyms so the song can flow like it should he just did it the best way he could all he has to do is change some sentence structure and use words that can make the song more flowy
You made a good job so far...as another non-native English speaker, I'd agree that it's not a very precise language...they don't even have a plural-you! So how will I know if they talk to me only or to the whole crowd??? If Germans have a kid (neuter noun) and a dog (male noun) and say "it is mine" - it's clear the child is ment and not the dog. Spanish: Ossito = Bärchen (in German) - now translate it to English ????? small-male-bear...sounds stupid.
Yes. I think this person did a grand job despite various Finnish people translating it differently. I do not know the true extent of how hard it is but I have been trying to learn the language for many years and every day my head feels dizzy from confusion, even with the help from Finnish friends with perfect English. They all say different things yet seem to understand each other perfectly. I greatly appreciate their patience with me though. One day, all the confusion and frustration in learning this beautiful language will so be worth it. I love it so much
This, this is the reason I love Nightwish, with or without Tarja. Faces will change, but the soul can stay the same.
the best track from their album
i love it when the flute kicks in and just makes your life look perfect moment...
They really killed it on here. The best way to open an album
On the wintry ground a moment is like forever

Thank you! Beautiful lyrics!

question.... you sure that you're grandchild is a he? or was there one of those ultrasounds to see what "he" was
Most definitely a grandson. Ta!

I thought Bärchen in German goes for both female cubs and male cubs.

hey, c'mon give credit where credit is due. do you know just how hard it is to translate Finnish to English?

They used to all be from Finland but not anymore. They've adopted a sister from the Netherlands and a brother from Britain :)
