    Scott's Moriarty is hands down one of the best villains of all time. All media taken together.

      he's a good villain but not an interesting character. He's the joker to sherlocks batman. Not good on his own but a very good antagonist.

      @@georgbergsten6050 I get that, but I think that he still has interesting archetypes. Although I don't know if this Moriarty is the same character as the original in Doyle's books, If so then I would say it would for the most part he is original.

      Disagree. I think Harris’ Moriarty is a lot better by virtue of being more maniacal, calculating, and menacing in a serious way.

    I feel like...even though Moriarty died, he's still the one who won.
    Sherlock was gone for two years. On that time, John has found the love of his life. When Sherlock comes back, everything ain't like it used to be. John's angry with Sherlock, and (at first) wanna stay away from him. Sherlock lives alone, and John marries Mary. When things get better between John and Sherlock, then John and Mary gets married! And after that? Sherlock left his best friend's wedding early, and only one episode from that...John finds him on drugs and in a pretty bad shape.
    So yeah...Moriarty definitely won...

      i mean.. after that we saw how things get better and sherlock, rosie and john are in the apartment and everyone is smiling and stuff.
      in my opinion, james already has won at the roof. he made sure that sherlock has people to care about, which is enough. james doesn't have any, except sherlock was interesting person. but when moriarty found out that holmes doesn't want to be on his side, sherlock became boring, ordinary and james has nothing more to do, except to die. he literally won life. he lived, tried everything, took the knowledge, and left.
      in the final problem we also saw that he, even dead, won again whit the help of Eurus. and because jim knew that Eurus is scared beside the smartness, he totally gave up finding someone like him.

    What is fascinating about Andrew Scott’s portrayal of Jim Moriarty is a combination of visual as well as verbal sparring with Sherlock.
    I don’t see this series continuing without these two characters surviving. This series already has a track record of characters coming back from obvious death so there is a good chance of happening.

    • @juniperberry58
      @juniperberry58 3 года назад

      disagree on the coming back part (they used like four episodes to confirm he was dead, to just throw that it the window would frankly make me hate the show), that being said, Moriarty was incredible.

    I like Moriarty because he’s hot & has an irish accent
    ... and because he’s Andrew Scott 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Moriarty is the perfect villain because he is perfect! the best man. the man with a key is king!

  • @guest0407
    @guest0407 6 лет назад +73

    CS Lewis once wrote, 'Friendship ... is born at the moment when one man says to another '"What! You too? I thought that no one but myself..."'
    From the audience's perspective, Moriarty is such a great villain because he is Sherlock's equal (or, as you put it, a "worthy adversary"). In a parallel universe where either man made different choices, they could have been very good friends. Moriarty represents, to the audience, an equal they themselves long to find (and likely befriend if they could). His compatibility to Sherlock makes him dangerous but also incredibly important on purely sentimental terms; without Moriarty, Sherlock would have no equal. If the villain is not equal or compatible to Sherlock, the audience cannot become invested in the villain, for he cannot represent what the audience members themselves are seeking, which is an equal, or someone greatly compatible with themselves.
    *shrugs* Just my opinion, though.

    Andrew's Moriarty is the best! Like...it's not all about what he's saying. Andrew did amazing the body language, facial expressions and HOW he said the lines!

    I have been searching for someone to explain the reasoning behind Moriarty’s greatness. You did an excellent job. He has and always be my favorite villain. I believe the Andrew Scott and Jared Harris versions are the best. Once again great work on this excellent video!

    Really good video, I'm going to tell my mom about it XD
    I think an other fact that makes Moriarty a grate villain, is his death.
    He died unexpectedly, but people can't forget about him. He's not alive, but in my Head. I feel kind of manipulated by thinking he will come back, just because I want him to come back. He was the only reason I watched season 4 after season 3 was so bad.

    I would add one more thing: LIKEABLE. Moriarty is menacing but also quirky, funny, charming. That's why Eurus is so much worse a character: she's super scary, but although they try to make you feel pity for her in the end, she has zero charisma.

    Love the video and the characters! But I'm pretty sure that Tony Stark, portrayed as the most self-centered Avenger literally attaching himself to a nuke and flying it and him through what he thought was a one-way trip away from NYC is a pretty big spot of character development, plus the decision gives him severe PTSD and anxiety. Definitely not the same after.
    But yeah Jim Moriarty is so much better written than just about any villain today

    I appreciate this video because it made me appreciate him more. I'm a big fan of the portrayals by eric porter and jared harris, and i loved andrew scott the first time i watched sherlock but more divided the 2nd time, loving some moments but feeling he was too over-the-top sometimes. This made me less divided
    Side note: book version is incredible too

    If you would like to read a good book based off of Sir Author Conan Doyle work, look for a book called "Moriarty" by Anthony Horowitz from 2014.

    This Moriarty is typical of Moffat's writing: a collection of verbal quips in the shape of a person designed to get fangirls and boys in raptures. There's no "why" that makes for a good character. Canon Moriarty runs a criminal empire and that's why he wants Holmes out of the way. This Moriarty wants....something? He's obsessed with Sherlock (who isn't even the smartest of the Holmes kids), to the point that he's willing to off himself, but for some unstated reason.

  • @LordBaktor
    @LordBaktor 5 лет назад +4

    Might be an unpopular opinion, but I prefer Charles Augustus Magnussen over Moriarty. Jim might be Sherlocks equal, but Magnussen is actually his superior. He completely defeats Sherlock and forces him to actually fall (whereas Moriarty at most managed to smear his reputation with lies) and he didn't even try that hard. The episode itself is nothing to write home about, but Magnussen is fucking scary.
