Hey Laura! I was thinking that perhaps you could have a new segment where you cook several recipes at the same time using a centralised theme or ingredient :) Would help us in meal planning haha thank you!
I love your recipes :) They're easy, delicious and a great way to bribe people haha!

She has a point, usually we pile our plates at my house thinking were going to eat a lot, and we dont even finish our plates, and some food dont even get touched. So smaller portions with a bigger variety of food and food that is hearty and rich is better than piling our plates and not eating it. Plus chefs and cooks go by original serving sizes which dont ever seem like the right amount to us.

I have tried and cooked this dish and have followed your instructions to a tee. Four words 'Out of this world' This is so delicious and it was my 1st go at cooking Gratin. It is a heavy dish as mentioned. I found one serving to be sufficient. The family enjoyed this dish. I will definitely be cooking this again, thank you Laura, I would have attached a photo if I could. ♥️

oooo I made this and it was so good! a suggestion would be instead of laying the sliced potatoes, I would rather toss the potatoes in the sauce first and then pour it into the baking dish and bake it. then it'l cover the potatoes all around. but overall it's a great recipe!

  • @ChipsAplentyBand

I made this last night and, like Elaine Benes in Seinfeld's "Soup Nazi" episode, I HAD TO SIT DOWN when I tasted it-it was that wonderful. I made mine with Idaho russets and Vermont cheddar, added a small amount of chopped white onion layered in with the potatoes before baking, used dried/powdered thyme, sage, and also some rosemary, minced/added the garlic (rather than just flavoring the sauce with a whole clove of garlic and then removing it) and then garnished a serving with a gentle sprinkling of kosher salt and paprika on top. The only possible improvement would have been using smoked paprika. Unbelievably good-thanks, Laura!!

I'm wondering how the flavors would be changed with different cheeses...
I would guess each kind of cheese would create an entirely different dish.
I don't know about the cheese used here but I would love to try this a few different times with muenster, swiss, provolone or gouda.
I'm wondering if fetta would work as well though. The flavor would be interesting I think but the texture might be off. Also I think cheddar would be too overpowering though... Something like this, you would need to observe a fine balance between all the flavors it's enriched with.
Will have to play around with it and see.

I was thinking that it would be especially delicious to mix in some cheese with that white sauce as well. However perhaps the type of cheese she used is so powerful, you only need it baked on top?

Laura I just adore you. Somtimes when I see you have a posted a new recipie and it is something I particularly love I literally gasp out loud and am like "YES!" Haha =p I am subscribed to several other great cooking channels but anytime I want to make something I check your recipies first because they are always the perfect balance of delecious, fresh, healthy, and affordable! 2 dishes I have made on thanksgiving the past few years is green bean casserole and gratin potatoes that I got from a site I used to go to. But this year I am replacing both of those dishes with your versions!! They look so much better and fresher but easier at the same time! You truly have a gift for this sort of thing! I don't know where my kitchen life would be without you!

I've made Jacques Pépin's recipe many times. This recipe resembles it somewhat- he doesn't add cheese or herbs. I myself add thyme since we grow it at home + I add white sharp aged cheddar and/or aged fontina, and I hardly ever use sage, so I wonder what that herb actually does to the taste of potatoes. I always think of sage as an herb to use when making Turkey- only.
