How to Make a Tooling Weight

In this video I show how I make leather tooling weights. This is a a great tool to use as you stamp leather. The weight keeps the leather from sliding around on your slab so that you have nice, neat tooling.

I make mine using reloading shots from a gun or sporting goods store. They weigh more and in the long run much cheaper than BBs. You can also sell the bags to seamstresses or tailors. Or, buy them already made and pay 3 X the price!

I like to use an ammo box for a weight if I need more weights than I have on hand.

Definitely need to make one of these. I noticed there at the end that your piece was starting to 'curl', I'm having a terrible time with that. Any suggestions on how to prevent/cope with the curling? Thanks!

Im assuming you're talking about the peice i was tooling. What will help, and something that i didnt do in that clip was add blue painter tape to the back. This stiffens up the peice and doesnt allow the leather to expand as much as you displace the leather while stamping. Also making sure your project is well cased, or wet.

Any advantage to suede over veg tan to make the bag?

I find that the softness of the suede doesnt scratch up leather projects. It also doesnt slide around like veg tan would. Those are just a few benefits I've found. Probably could have added that to the video lol
