  • First class on the slowest Shinkansen Bullet Train, Kodama, is extremely comfortable. It’s absolutely worth for the extra time. If you book a special ticket called Platt Kodama, it’ll be a lot cheaper than the fastest Shinkansen, Nozomi. Seats on Nozomi and Kodama are the same.
    [What is Platt Kodama?]
Platt Kodama is a special discount ticket for passengers traveling by JR Tokaido Shinkansen. You must book a ticket until the day before your departure date.
Booking can be made at JR Tokai Tours branches in major JR stations, such as Tokyo Station, Shin-Osaka Station and Kyoto Station.
Also, booking can be made through JR Tokai Tours website, but it’s only available in Japanese.

    • @the_wiki9408
      @the_wiki9408 2 года назад +3

But JR Pass also covers Hikari, which make far fewer stops and take 1 hour less between Osaka and Tokyo. (3 hrs vs 4 hrs). I would only take Kodama with JR pass if you need to stop at one of the smaller cities that Hikari passes by. Also keep in mind all these trains actually go the same speed, it is just the number of stops they make that is the difference in how much time it takes. Kodama is great for visitors because you can get the Platt Kodama ticket (used in this video) and save almost 4000 Yen over Hikari or Nozomi tickets. If you are just making a one way or round trip between Tokyo and Kyoto, as many tourists, do, then the JR pass does not pay off. You will save more money by doing the Platt Kodama tickets and spending 1 extra hour on train.

It might seem slow but in reality the trip is very relaxing and the time flies. Especially if you're in the Green car class.
Granted traveling by air has a much shorter flight time but don't forget that you also have to take into consideration the time to get to and from the airport (usually further away), time to check-in, time to go to security etc. etc. It almost always ends up faster and more convenient to take the train.

I think the peace of a quiet or not very packed carriage after the loud hustle and bustle of a busy station feels almost like a sanctuary. It’s like turning the volume right down.
I used to teach in a school, so I had school breaks when children had them. So I hadn’t really experienced many things during the normal working week without children. Trains ….so quiet, if I didn’t go in the rush hour of course. I remember doing about a 5 hour journey, apart from a tube to connect (London ugh😩) it was very pleasant. The noise of children has never bothered me.
I hate going to or connecting through London, the tube is my nemesis with its’ east lines, west, change here find the next tube. A friend who lives close to London doesn’t understand my dislike of it. I come from a busy but small

@@yoman7873 The U.S. might have the largest railway... but "largest" might not be the best metric to look at. Yes, we have an extensive amount of track... but we also have it stretched out thinly across the entirety of the country. And most of the trains on those tracks are strictly cargo.
Passenger trains, both long distance and local commuter, are few and far between. Denver is the only city in Colorado to have local light rail (think subways with out the digging), but it was a fight to get it, and then to expand it as much as it has... and it's still meager compared to other cities.

I don't know about you, but I think this video was action-packed, haha! I was shouting "RUN RUN!" every time he went out. "No need to rush", them's lies! You must always rush!

I was happy you made it..
I couldn't get the bento boxes in 5 minutes, Can't even go up the stairs..
I'm glad you had a good time, and thank you very much in sharing your day trip with us, Thank You God Bless,😇🙏🏻

For me when I visit Japan the next time it will be because I’m retired. This slow train makes sense for me because I like to people watch and it’s more likely with the stops 😊

When visiting Japan as a tourist you can get he Japan Rail pass to ride any Train in Japan I think the only exception is a Nozomi and the fast one to Kyushu.
So Nozomi is no option but you're in vacation then so you have the time.

I honestly would have picked the Kodama given the cheaper prices, but I ultimately settled with the Nozomi because it was easier to book a ticket for one.

I’ve been on these trains. They’re included in the JR Japan Rail Pass. I didn’t get to sit in this section though. One of the downsides is the lack of WiFi which the newer trains provide. Otherwise it is a very enjoyable ride, faster than any regular express or limited express and much more comfortable.
I rode a combination or express and local trains from Tokyo to Nagoya once down the Tokaido Line. It took most of a day but it was a wonderful opportunity to see more of the countryside.

I absolutely love traveling by train whenever I get the chance. Especially when I get up to Alaska. It's an amazing experience that, sadly, not many people take advantage of in the States.

Nice video, great editing. This video reminds me of an episode in Seinfeld, an American TV show. But it was a subway train in New York and the character Kramer loves to get off during stops to get this delicious sandwich.

I think this is a great way to travel. The journey itself has so much value, why rush it when you don’t always need to? Loved the look of those bento boxes 🍱 and the jump cut to the second one empty!

I started watching your videos on the ferry’s you take and food at the buffet, completely different than the American buffets. I like seeing the different places to stay and eats you are showing ,it’s fun to watch.

Man, I would be super relaxed just because of the gentle, polite and rather lovely voices making the announcements.
"The exit will be on the left side of the train."
    Me, familiar with Dutch trains:
"Huh? Over here they just announce the station, and whether it will be a left or right exit, that's always left as a big surprise."

I have taken the Kodama from Tokyo to Kyoto and it was a lovely train experience, although I would not have been game enough to get off for Bento! I made sure I had a bento box and snacks before I got on.. :)
I also took the Nozomi for the reverse trip and was impressed at how much faster it was but no more comfortable, either train was worth experiencing...
I miss being able to travel to Japan..... :(

Thank you for your videos !!!
I travelled a few years ago solo in japan, so it's nice to watch your videos.
It reminds of me good times in Japan.
Here are a few things that you don't show in your video maybe because for you it's not extaordinary but that you should film too :
The Ekiben market in the station : usually in Europe and France the food offer in the station is poor because traditionally you could buy (and still can) expansive unappelling food in the train.
So i remember the Ekiben market from Osaka with great joy.
Smoking room in the train : Nope sir we don't have that at home.
I'am a smoker, so it was a surprise and a great pleasure
The clever baby seat in the toilet : Not a home neither .
I think i'll fly back to Japan to explore the inner see.
Your video on the ferries are inspiring.

it's an exciting bento challenge in such short time lol, I would love to try the 2nd one~ Having bento is my most favourite part while taking Shinkansen~~~ Nozomi is my first choice since time is money especially during vacation~

it's a good thing you got onto the train!! i have taken shinkansen once, i believe it was the nozomi. we were using the JR tourist pass so price wasn't an issue. at the time, they offered a service where you could purchase snacks? however the bento looks more delicious. i only found out about ekiben through youtube, and it's good to know that you can grab one in the short time the train is stopped!
