The Great Ashoka changed the model for future monarchs. The righteous King's reign would show how power should be wielded to create a Buddhist society and future kings would even invite monks to be a part of their courts. Buddhism expanded across the world along with The Emerald Buddha and change with the cultures it reached.

Yeah, there's actually a doctrine in Buddhism which is that if a teaching or practice doesn't conflict with the Buddha's teaching, it's fine. This means that we actually consider figures, like Jesus, to be Bodhisattvas. It also means the exact same Buddhist school can look very different in different parts of the world. In Japan, for example, people often sit on their knees, but because that is something we're not used to in America, we (the Buddhists I practice with in America) usually sit in chairs. We also don't have a holy day of the week, but because most people go to church on Sunday, we tend to have meetings on Sunday because it fits with most people's schedules.

One part of the story about Buddha that I've studied in the school. Before He go to Nirvana (aka death). He said that please adapt his teaching if we feel right. This is actually why the Buddhism split into 2 school, the one that adapt to their culture and society at the time (Mahayana) and the one that also adapted but also try keep as strictly as possible (the one in the video) The core of Buddhism itself that about self-improvement and go in middle ground also help the adapt it into other culture.

As the Extra credits team said there are always asterisks (*) to everything in Buddhism.
Even in Mahayana Bodhisttvas are frequently considered not completely enlightened because they are not buddhas and it is buddhahood that is often considered the true enlightenment.
Also since there is more than one asterisk to everything in Buddhism according to Tathagathagarbha/Buddha Nature doctrine in Mahayana every being is already enlightened from times immemorial and the act of enlightenment is merely the realization of that already possessed enlightenment. According to Dogen Zenji, fabled monk who brought Caodong Chan from China as Soto Zen in Japan even though everybody is already enlightened for countless kalpas practice is still important because practice is enlightenment.

Funny enough if you are Thai you can go in for free, so my wife got in for free. Being a farang (foreigner) I had to pay 500 baht (about $17). Totally worth it. The same temple has a mural that’s probably a kilometer long of the story of wukong.

The mural tells the Ramakien, the Thai version of Ramayana. I was involved with an animated film version called "Ramavatar: Murals Brought To Life" which used very high definition photographs of the temple murals to create the characters and backgrounds. You are allowed to enter the temple for free on New Year's Day. I hadn't been there for five years, the last time was when I took a Burmese friend who really wanted to see it, and so went back again on New Year's Day this year, as well as The City Pillar Shrine, and Loha Prasat; not quite the full 7 temples, as one should. The admission ticket to Wat Phra Kaew and The Grand Palace also gives you access to The National Museum, the former Front Palace, which they recently renovated and is much improved. Admission to the museum is also free for everyone during the anniversary celebrations of the founding of Rathanakosin which includes evening performances and food and goods sold on the grounds and at the adjoining National Theatre all day long.

5:15 That reminds me. According to the RUclips Channel: Hello Future Me, Christianity didn’t just simply dominate or eliminate pagan religions, they assimilated them. Instead of telling people that their gods didn’t exist and they had to convert, they said: Your gods are real, they’re just not quite gods. This is exemplified by Saint Brigid of Ireland, who is the Christian version of the Irish Celtic goddess Brig. The same held true to Spirits and mythological folk hero’s, turning them into Angels and Saints. This helped people retain their cultural identity and value system while being Christian.

pretty much every religion had to borrow from what came before it where it was conceptualized or it spread to, as for christianity you have to look no further than Christmas day being 25 of December, a day that held religious symbolism in a few noteworthy religions that predated christianity in the roman empire like mythraism and the cult of sol invictus. For a more localized example look at dia de los muertos in mexico(the only one i know that's celebrated in a single country as ones like halloween are a thing for the whole of catholicism with varying degrees of importance to be sure)

When a friend of mine from Myanmar came to Bangkok he told me he was surprised to see Hindu and Chinese deities included in Buddhist temples and shrines. He said that in Myanmar if a temple is Buddhist you will only find The Buddha. However, when I went to Yangon I saw the presence of Nats, particularly at Shwedagon where we conducted a service before beginning production on a movie and prayed not only to the central pagoda, but to The Nats as well. But I suppose because he'd grown up with it he didn't see that as being an add-mixture, but when seeing other spiritual forms alongside The Buddha in Thailand it stuck out to him. It was very interesting. By the way, when I'd first been to The Temple of The Emerald Buddha in Bangkok I thought I'd stepped into a dreamworld. Entering Shwedagon was a similar experience. It's hard for me to say which of the two is more beautiful and extraordinary.

@@WaterShowsProdIt's a fascinating thing, the extent to which Buddhism within the S/E Asian mainland is diversified. To me, having grown up in Bangkok it was always normal to have Chinese and Hindu figures and myth included. It wasn't something I gave much thought about. Ma Guanyin was a figure my mother gave special attention to, and the imagery of the Ramayana was regularly incorporated into temple decoration. There was nothing unusual with the idea of ogres/demons like the Yaksha as temple guardians. And all this within the space of Thailand alone, then you can shift focus a few hundred miles to the neighbours and find something both wildly different yet familiar.
As well-travelled as I am, I don't think I ever got as much of a culture shock as when I looked at neighboring Buddhist ideas and practices.

An interesting case for sure. Dude rejected the main tenets of buddhism like renunciation, meditation, samsara, karma(especially karma, dalits didn't like that), rebirth, and even going as far as the four noble truths. Ambedkar reinvents the buddha's renunciation and turns him into this quasi-social reformer/politician rather than the spiritual leader he was.

In the 00s people around the world were struck with impulsive anti-Islamic sentiment.
We know fairly clearly this is due not only to 9/11 and not only to the lead up years but also because large crowds of popular opinion sometimes are rash and do not distinguish true enemy from ally or neutral with appropriate discretion.
It became very problematic and complicated to sort out and continues to this day. It would not be misplaced to do a video on Afghanistan clearing up as much as can be cleared up.
I think people's hearts are in the right place already, but that is not enough to pierce confusion to find wise strategy that succeeds at peace.
The entire strategy of terrorism is largely to foment distrust chaos confusion and we certainly are burdened with these problems.
If we genuinely sincerely internally accept that we have allowed confusion to deceive us, we should slow down to retrace our steps and uncover where were we tricked into fighting amongst ourselves?
The Middle-East and Indo-China were getting along with the West very tensely where the common opponent was the USSR. Eventually that dynamic changed and status quo between thinly upheld cooperation collapsed.
This is simply not the fault of religion. This is more the result of very modern economic and political jockeying. I am atheist and yet I notice that.....corporations seem to affect these issues of peace the most, because any place can be made unrestful if the most wealthy choose for it to be unrestful. It is unfortunately money distribution that's been the problem most recently.
Interesting topics but hard to cover accurately and sensitively. The post 9/11 world has been quite stressful for everyone and nothing feels the same at all anymore.

The spread and adaption of Buddhism remains me of the spread and adaptation of Christianity. It first went from oral to written down, then copied, then translated, and translated, and translated, and then reinterpreted and translated.....Until it split into many denominations.

Buddhism was first imported to Mon state before Burmese and Thai people imported over. Money no longer have their own state now but their culture was absorbed by Thai and Burmese, which makes it seem like they have a shared culture.
