    Baraggan is the most mishandled character in the series. The idea that somebody as ancient as he is is not on the same level as Yamamoto really didn’t sit right with me.

      Age does not equal power. For 1000 years Yama was mastering zanjutsu, hakuda, hoho, and kido while teaching these techniques to soul reapers. Meanwhile Barragan sat on a chair in the middle of a desert surrounded by hollows that would get bodied by lieutenants, let alone a captain . We can say beyond any shadow of a doubt that Yama is a master combatant. Barragan seems to just sit back and let his op ability do all the work for him. That just means it makes all the more sense that Barragan let his own arrogance be his downfall. He didn't see Hachi as a threat so Hachi was able to outsmart him and use his own op ability agains him. Hard to say how respira would stack up against Yama bankai flames, but Yama bankai is hot enough to erase things from existence while respira merely decays.

      @@brycenorvell6540 Yes and no… I agree that Baraggan was shown to just be sitting around but for most of Yamamoto‘s time in the story he just stood there as well and did nothing too. The only two times he really got involved he gets blindsided by wonderwis and then the second time he gets killed… We also don’t know what happened with Baraggan prior to the story starting. Hueco Mondo for the most part seem to have been in a state of peace and Baraggan Was the undisputed king of that realm. We don’t know what he went through to get it to that point. Wasn’t it said that Vasto Lorde should be on the same level as captains? Where were they all? the few that we do encounter during the series are at peace. Who knows Barragán could have been waging a millennia of war eradicating the rest of them to get to where he was. I think this theory draws a lot of parallels with the history of the Soul society, the formation of the Gotei 13 and it’s extended state of peace it was experiencing when the story gets started. Don’t you think? Regarding his abilities, I thought it was great! And I thought the way that he was eventually killed was very fitting for his character. My issue with him I guess is more of an unbalanced power scaling issue across the series as a whole. I just think Baraggan got it worse.

      The second half of the arrancar arc downplayed heavily how powerful Vasto lorde class hollows are in the lore. Heck they had Yamoto beat one with his fists. When his prime self couldn’t beat a rival to Baraggan the same way. Vasto lorde are physically stronger and faster then captains. They had to invent zanpakutous to kill them.

I don't think vasto lordes lived up to the statement that put them on the same level as captains since Stark was killed by Shunsui in just his shikai. We were meant to see people like Stark and Barragan as threats to captain level individuals, but from what we see out of some of the captains in TYBW the arrancar never really stood a chance. I think Barragan still comes across as very strong, even from an EOS standpoint, the only way to kill him is with his own power or maybe someone like Yama, Ichibe, Gerard, etc.

    Maybe even give them some backstory, like having Yamamoto be the one who gave Baraggan the scar over his right eye back when they were both young; but instead of resenting him for it, Baraggan could thank Yamamoto for the lesson in humility, and explain that by no longer being cocky or arrogant he was able to grow supremely strong and conquer all of Hueco Mundo.

    I swear man not having Yamamoto, Baraggan, and Yhwach all interact makes no sense to me, like that would be awesome to see. Especially when you realize there all kind of related to Time. Yamamoto being able to resurrect the dead as soldiers for him to use in battle, and having control over Soul Society which is modeled after an old school style Japan. Which makes him represent the Past. Yhwach being able to use Future events to change the outcome of his current situation, making it so he always wins in the now. Which means he can represent the Present. And Baraggan's ability to rot absolutely anything by making it age rapidly, so he represents The Future. Since that's what eventually happens to everything. Whether this was intentional or not you have to admit it'd be pretty cool

      @@JN-bs5yr Let me clarify what I meant by that, I even edited the comment to make my statement clearer. What I meant is that based on the scaling of what we've seen from some others he's quite possibly only stronger than Harribel. Starrk has better showings and feats, as does Ulquiorra, and if we go off the scaling and portrayal Yammy LLargo is a more powerful being. Yes he has hax with his age death ability but in terms of raw power he's trumped out by 3 other Espada, potentially 4 if you count Wonderweiss. That's what I mean by rubbing me the wrong way. He should have been like Yamamoto, Yamamoto has the most powerful offensive Zanpakuto, but his kido skill, flashtep speed, Zanjutsu and Hakudo profiency are all top-notch as well. He beat a Vasto Lorde Espada level threat with his bare hands with no damage. If you take away Barragans zanpakuto he's low-key fodder. I could see an argument made that Respira-less Barragan would lose to fucking Grimmjow. That's the problem. You take away Ulquiorra's zanpakuto he's still 1v1ing someone like Bankai or Hollowmasked Ichigo in base form. You take away Starrks zanpkauto and he's still fast enough to blitz past Ichigo and Kenpachi and keep up with Shunsui in close combat. Shunsui is the same dude whose comparable to Retsu and Jushiro, assuming he hasn't trained from that arc to the Wanderiech arc, which is possible, Starrk scales to base Lille Barro. Starrk is better than Barragan in every way except hax. He's so strong he had to split himself to repress his power, the only other person who did this was child Kenpachi, who scaled to Retsu Unohana, one of the strongest Captains in Soul Society's history. Starrk is also the only Espada that joined Aizen not out of fear or anything like that.

      @@storysurgeon5922 Barragan easily has better feats than Starrk, and pretty much every Espada besides Ulquiorra. But his respira would allow him to win against either of them. He's also shown to be one of the fastest in the verse, and his respira is faster than any of their attacks. Wonderweiss is nowhere near Barragan level so I'm not sure why he's even in the convo. You're saying without hax barragan is weak, which I agree with but it wouldn't be fair to dispose of the only thing he specializes in. There is no Espada that can counter his ability, plain and simple which makes him the strongest by far.
      I do agree that as the king of Hueco he should've been able to rival Yamamoto, which is a huge flaw in his character. His ability is leagues ahead of Yamamoto's but the spiritual pressure is what makes the difference in strength between them.

    I do think there is a major difference in terms of Spiritual Pressure and combat ability.
    Barragan definitely has high combat ability, being incredibly difficult to handle for opponents to deal with due to his ability but will simply get dunked on by someone with a massive difference in spiritual pressure like Aizen while someone like Yammy has high spiritual pressure but cannot apply that advantage in terms of combat (to the point that neither Byakuya nor Kenpachi had any issues cutting him despite Yammy having an ability that deliberately increases his durability).
    Yammy who is the "strongest Espada" was just a third wheel in their attempted clash and comedic relief that was so unimportant, that he was off-screened.
    Someone who has both high spiritual pressure and combat ability, like Aizen or Ulquiorra is truly more of a threat. Even Kenpachi found out how dangerous someone with less spiritual pressure could be when Pernida turned his leg into a meatball and would've one-shotted him had Mayuri not interfered.
    That's why I'm always torn between Ulquiorra and Starrk. I really don't know how well Ulquirroa would've done against 2v1s, especially the first fight against Shunsui and Ukitake. It definitely wouldn't have been back and forth stomp fest it was when he fought against Ichigo or how well he would've done with Ukitake basically hard countering his strongest techniques as he did against Starrk. At the same time, I don't think Starrk could put down Vasto Lorde Ichigo or do better than Ulquiorra but probably wouldn't have played with his food to bring out the transformation.
    This is just me nerding out. I appreciate the video and you being one of the few power scalers I watch who knowledge the flaws of the medium (and Kubo's trolling). Cheers.

    • @UnifiedEntity
      @UnifiedEntity 2 года назад

      You just made me realize Yammy is a combat retarded version of Kenpachi. Sure Kenpachi cant consciously control his spiritual energy, but he can use it to affect his enemy via spiritual pressure and protect himself from attacks like how Ichigo couldnt cut him.

    • @JoseSerrato0420
      @JoseSerrato0420 2 года назад +22

      Yeah, something that always irks me about people talking about "strongest" characters is that they go purely based of feats and who-beat-who without taking into account that different aspects of the character form their combat ability, which is completely different from their strengths. As you said, Yammy has the highest spiritual pressure but he's not intelligent enough to use it to the best capable way. In comparison, Kenpachi also had very high spiritual pressure but he focuses it on cutting to be able to slash anything he wants. It's not the best use of that overabundance of power but still more concentrated than how Yammy fights.
      Also, I've been rereading Bleach and the power scales always seem very, very hard to distinguish a ranking. Kubo likes to make fights equal-ish, so speeds are sometimes nerfed and some abilities are sometimes overblown. The best example I can state is that Ichigo could barely beat Grimmjow, who's number 6. So, obviously, up against a released Ulqiuorra, Ichigo would get very easily stomped making Ulqiuorra seem way too powerful. However, Hitsugaya had been portrayed as somewhat weak throughout the series up to this point due to barely surviving his battles and sometimes failing to kill his opponents (Luppi, the replacement 6th espada, survived his ice attack and retreated). Yet, Hitsugaya held his own against Harribel for quite some time. Even assuming Ulqiuorra should have been placed much higher, this still means that Hitsugaya could have beaten Grimmjow and Nnoitora while Ichigo just barely managed Grimmjow, and it's evidence of how vague the fighting rankings of each character can become when match-ups are designed to make battles prolonged.

      "Combat ability" are all the physical stats that can be eeked out of Reiryoku/Reiatsu, databook statements clarify that all the power of Ichigo's bankai goes into speed for instance. So they are essentially one in the same which is why res and bankais can throw hands.

    Barrigan's character shows one of the glaring issues with Kubo's writing. Kubo is among the best shonen writers ever at designing and introducing amazing characters with amazing backstories. I'd personally say Kubo is, however, among the worst (popular) shonen writers at developing and utilizing those characters after introducing them. Barrigan is a victim of this, the Royal Guard (squad 0) are victims, Chad and Orihime are victims, Starrk is a victim. I'd argue a lot more characters are introduced with amazing designs and backstories (including Ichigo), then fail to be utilized effectively, but those are obvious examples.

    Barragan could have easily been a main villain in Bleach seeing the World of the living as a new castle with his henchmen Arrancar/Espada invading. A medieval like setting for Barragan in Huecco Mundo where the King needs to consume high spiritual souls to fulfill a goal or some sort. It's not some overpowered sword or being able to channel your inner power into strong strikes, its just decaying. something that all living and nonliving things fall victim to. even powers humans couldn't comprehend could decay and have their life widdle away. just a touch and you could fall into nothingness, and that was something that even applied to the captains as Soi Fon was literally touched and her arm was gone. its probably one of the scariest powers that if used properly I'm not sure anyone in the series could have actually handled it.

And, being stronger than someone doesn't *always* stop a power from working. Just look at Tousen getting bodied by Kenpachi. Kenpachi was under the full effect of the bankai despite DEFINITELY being stronger.

    As best I remember, Baraggan was king of Hueco Mundo simply primarily due to the nature of his abilities, that being able to nullify virtually any physical or elemental attack meant he had the ultimate defense, and to that extent he was an absolute monster. That being said, his offensive capabilities were likely less than the other higher ranked Espada, although if pressed into a fight Baraggan would have likely easily beaten them, and on the same token he could have taken even Yamamoto. Baraggan was only subjugated by Aizen's zanpakuto hypnosis powers and became an unwilling pawn out of the desire of self-preservation and was simply biding his time till Aizen moved on or was taken out by somebody else.

Then when that fails he becomes the old man we know and in that form his speed is drastically diminished. But his defensive capabilities are staggeringly high. That was the whole point of the fight. He didn't fight at all. His released form is named arrogante for a reason. As he released his power he just used respira so just his breath of death. In his base form he could catch up to Soi Fon with his speed. The released form should be even faster but he didn't realy move. As an espada he could have used zeros to attack too but it was never a fight for him. In the released state he only used his axe two times as he was anoyed of Hachi and it instantly cutted through his Kido while his respira needed seconds to break through it. But it wasn't like he was seriously attacking. It was more like shaking of an annoying fly.
      I think thats the whole point of the fight. A much stronger enemy then Hachi and Soi Fon whould lose because Baraggan whould take them serious.
      There are only a few charakters that could beat Baragan. Aizen is the perfect example. Aizen is just the perfect hard counter against baraggan. Underestimating Aizen will trap anyone in Kyoka Suigetsu and that deafeats mostly anyone without a great area effect mass destruction power like Yamamoto. An arrogant person like Baraggan will allways lose against someone like that. After becoming an arrancar that has changed. Now Baraggan has a powerfull area effect mass destruction power. The problem is the one he has does not work for Aizen anymore. If Aizen whould not just block the respira, it whould just trigger the evolution with Hōgyoku which whould turn him into a beeing that does not age.

    I'd disagree on one note that Respira can be negated by spirit pressure. Not least of which because we've seen stronger individuals cut down by weaker attacks in the series and the speech Aizen gives about negation is from an illusion of him in the first place so he's not even the one talking in that scene to Soi Fon. Finally, we do see Aizen affected by kido and other physical abilities from beings far less powerful than he is, such as the attack by Gin on him, or Shinji's reverse perception ability and even Ichigo's initial attacks on him. Respira is stated to be an "Absolute" ability-even upon its wielder, so I very much doubt Stark, Aizen or Yamamoto could just 'negate' Respira with spirit pressure.

    Gotta remember that Soifon-Omaeda vs Barragàn is a very bad matchup to start with, Oomaeda isnt that impressive but Soifon is a cqc specialist first and foremost, and Barragáns's aging mist surrounds him so her main avenue of attack is gone, her Bankai is too taxing and not focused at all, so even when it should have been close at the time of detonation most of the energy was wasted. I have absolutely zero problems with Baraggan not being the strongest. Starrk makes a great primera espada because it ties into his theme, he's so powerful his strength alienates him from everyone else. He's also the only espada who became an arrancar under his own power and not via Aizen and the hogyoku, already being one when Aizen arrives. But Barragan's age and backstory is what was mishandled. Is he an ancient being of the same caliber as Yamamoto and Yhwach, or just a typical vasto lordes? What does being king of hueco mundo imply, is it an empty title where he's acknowledged by only a handful of adjuchas class menos like Grimmjow was or did he really rule over hueco mundo entirely? Did the soul society know about him even? Why is his resurreccion simply reverting to his original state as a hollow rather than a hybrid form like the other arrancar? Why is he just a straight up skeleton and not a proper hollow with flesh and a white mask?
    The way everyone during the fkt arc treats him, he seems more like a generically powerful self proclaimed ruler over nothing than the king of hueco mundo.
    Basically Bleach's lack of serious world building leaves us once again wanting more.

    Don't forget as of now Kenpachi is the eldest of the active captains as he was alive before the original Quincy invasion. Kenpachi's arc of power is hard guage because his power reactive not consistent in growth. It has high ceilings and the more times he gets near death the higher access he has to it. The best way we will see his limit only to have an opponent who will try to one shot him right away and unlike unohana, barragan wont be healing him.

    This is just a theory I have, myself, but I believe that Baraggan was actually capable of handling Aizen, before he'd acquired the Hogokyuo. Hollows are, I believe, more than a bit territorial and engage in power struggles from time to time. As such, to claim the title of King of the Hollows is not something one could do if they didn't have a considerable amount of strength to back up their words. And if Yamamoto could have bested Aizen, why wouldn't Baraggan, given the degree of power he had with regards to aging and killing things, even Kido?
    The answer is fear. Baraggan, despite embodying death and aging, was an extremely fearful individual. He had power in spades, but I'm guessing he's very rarely, if ever, fought anyone he didn't believe he couldn't defeat, before Aizen. So, while he might have been able to win in a fight, before a certain point, Aizen scared him enough that he couldn't work up the nerve to challenge him to a proper bout, winner take all. This is not a trait shared by either Yamamoto nor Yhcwh, as neither one would balk at the idea of having to throw hands with Aizen.

    I love how the community take Gins word about Aizens strength but doesn't take Aizen himself saying he is only as strong as Urahara in combat ability. The same Urahara who was shitting him at the thought of fighting Ulquiorra.
