  • Positive Grid Spark Amp (Is It Worth The Hype?)
Today I try out the much talked about Spark Amp by Positive Grid. It's a practice amp that you can also use for bass and acoustic guitars. It's also a modeling amp, and it comes with 30 different amp models. The Spark Amp is fairly affordable, and it's fairly compact. It's also a new sort of guitar amp, in that it will accompany you when you play. But the important question is: how does it sound? That's what we'll see today. Hope you enjoy!

To me it’s worth every penny and lives up to all the hype, however, you need to have proper settings otherwise most of you will say it’s muddy. This little amp has a lot of bass; Tip: turn your bass down to 1/4 -1/3. Mids: 75% -100%. Treble” 50-60% . Trust me, your tone will pop and clear up that mud. You’re welcome.

Nice review - I like that you actually played with the sounds, and that you also you tried the clean sounds - not many do. I have one of these and they sound great for what I want, I wanted a nice round 'jazz' 50's sound and had hell of a job getting it in a small practice amp. I like the Roland JC series - but have no room for even a JC22 where I live - this is perfect! Thanks for the review.

Mighty Elmo! I was so hoping you would review the Spark, I got mine for $225.00 and have barely scratched the surface on features. First I noticed the stereo lushness of the reverb, the amp can be dark but can be dialed out a bit by working with not only treble but a very active midrange (I'm a midrange freak as in Schenker, Uli Roth, and Mick Ronson). Hey, I know it's got all sorts of amps/pedals built in but I got some killer tones using some of my favorite od pedals including my Mad Professor 1! Try your YJM or Strymon and eq to taste (important) through the clean channel. Finally I have some 60s sounding original songs and got that early British invasion sound playing through the bass preset with the reverb turned way up. Finally again hope a software update makes the smart jam a bit smarter 👌 Sorry this so long, Bruce.

I am an old school tube amp guy but was intrigued by the idea of so many options and effects in one box and at $224 I figured it was worth a go. Heck, I've paid almost that for one pedal. So I plunked down my money and prepared myself for a six month wait. Well it only took two and a half months so I felt lucky. I've been using the Spark for a month or so and I must say I love the thing. I wasn't expecting much but it's easy to dial in a really nice tone for any musical situation I've encountered. The smart jam feature is actually my favorite part. It has helped my song writing and soloing immensely. I play a chord progression and Spark comes up with a rhythm track. I then edit the chords in the track to my liking for the different parts of the song (verse, bridge, chorus etc). The rhythm track is rarely similar to the one in my mind so I find that inspiring. The Spark will play the track on an endless loop while I compose solos and lyrics. I can even try out different amps and effects to fit my compositions. I mean, what's not to like? When I arrive at a composition I like, I record it in my DAW. Unbelievable technology. And at $224? It's a no brainer. I don't remember when I last had this much guitar fun for a couple hundred bucks. Will it replace my tube amp and pedal board gig rig? Hell no but it's not designed to. It's a practice amp and guitar skill/inspiration building tool. I think it's an awesome product and value. Even if you just used it as a Bluetooth speaker it would almost be worth the price. It gets louder and sounds better than my current Bluetooth speaker that only cost about $75 less. No, I'm not some paid endorser of Positive Grid. This is the first product of theirs I've used. No I am not switching over to solid state/modelling amps over tubes/pedals. But I've spent A LOT of money on guitar gizmos over the years and this is some of the most well spent.

Also you do have to slightly roll the bass off a tad. Other than that with the luve play along system built in, the recording feature through whatever tablet or devices camera your connected to and all the Bluetooth music it plays wirelessly from Spotify etc to play along with is brilliant. It will also listen to you play, figure out your chords and tempo and create a backing track based on style and genre. It's more than just the selectable ones. You can create your own beyond the boring ones. In short, as a small practice amp, it's brilliant!!!!!

When I tried it out, I'm afraid even with a bit of (non app) fiddling, it sounded muddy and bass heavy compared to the Katana and Yamaha. I went with the Yamaha 30 in the end, as the clarity, ease of tone changing without having to app fiddle (with extra options if you do) plus better connectivity was worth the extra £. Add a Bluetooth footswitch and you're golden.

Well. Good review. Take care sir. Thanks for breaking out the 7 string. That low pro trem is just killer. I have one on an Ibanez Japanese S series. One of my favorite guitars. Oh, if you ever get the chance, try the SV series Ibanez. Kinda setup like your strat with Gotoh two point trem and strat v shape neck profile, standard nut, and that wonderfully thin mahogany body. Just a real delight to play.

The great thing about this as a Practice Amp is the simplicity of getting different sounds without masses of gear ... You can take it anywhere with a guitar & cable and just plug in ...
Good for experimentation and also inspiration.
Good pedals aren't cheap, so it's good value from that perspective.
I ordered one after a large number of (unpaid) reviews and for, I repeat, a Practice Amp it does more than enough.
Pity there's no line-out to put it through a decent cab though.

As a practice amp, I think it is really nice and the ecosystem etc will be really cool. But as a bluetooth speaker, it sucks! Bad sound kills good music and all that. If I am playing along, I much prefer for all the music to actually be in something one could call fidelity. If I have nice stereo imaging etc I can place my amp in the room and get an experience which is better than the sound of being on stage. It almost can be like being in the studio with Lukather or Gilmour (and realising 98% is in the hands :-) not in the stuff ). I must however say that I have not tested this with headphones yet. Will try that out.

Very pretentious to assume someone would want to unless your playing in person for them imo. But when I do feel like laying down an original riff Spark has 2 virtual drummers who analyze my riff and lays down a good beat to my creation...something a reg amp will never do. It's actually a nightmare. My Bias Amp 2 software graphic image appears visually very small. The image is barely large enough to see on a PC screen. When I asked them about it their response was very lame. They don't care. they have nothing for android. Too bad. Their hardware units, such as pedals, are also void of PC and android use. So, had I known that they didn't connect to PC or android I would have purchased something else. When it came to getting some hardware for effects I went with Eventide.
