As an HBCU student in the mid 80's I never understood the purpose of black frats other than for the popularity aspect of it. Anything these groups do in the community could easily be done without them. We are already segregated enough without doing it to ourselves.
Anthony, you possessed a strand of common sense that many of us did not have. God bless you with the courage to not be drawn to that lifestyle. Me...not so much. I played football, was in ROTC, and was a member of a frat so my mindset was extraordinarily elitist and segregated...but God! I'm amazed that people place so much in fraternities. To be honest we place some of the same importance on denominations, jobs, relationships. There are a lot of things that we place before the Father. I'm glad they found peace in their decisions.

What the ex alpha stated is totally correct. I. A black man that became a mason as a young man in college. It ran all through my family. But for some reason. I didn’t stay active in it. It was just something that kept me from it. I then pledged a white fraternity. Kappa sig. and during the ritual. I remember things being said from the Masonic ritual. It all stems from masonry.

When I was in college God would not let me pledge a Greek letter organization no matter how much I wanted to. What the former member of Alpha Phi Alpha stated is totally on point at 7:30. I used to think that I was missing out but when I found out who I truly was as an individual and a man of the most high I was able to understand that my bond with him is the ultimate bond needed more than anything else in life. When I learned about the power of oaths and covenants as a man I was able to really thank God for shielding me as an undergrad at a PWU that looked at BGLA as something to aspire to
If you are joining a fraternity to just to belong or get some identity then you have bigger issues and should not seek a fraternity or any organization for that matter to fill the void. This is the problem with all those on this panel. They were looking to be made whole. That's not the purpose of a fraternity and because they did not get that they are giving false narratives of what it means to be a part of these great organizations that do great work in the community. They sound very bitter and using the Bible to mislead folks to believe they did it because it was the Christian thing to do which is totally BS.
So true, You cannot enter into these organizations without being checked by the holy spirit, if you're of God. Crazy, because there are religious people, like ministers and religious leaders that pledge. I remember my initiation, i felt in my spirit that i should run out of there because it appeared like a cult (let your no be your no) but I stayed because i allowed my flesh to win.(rebellious) I always felt weird with that delta ritual stuff we did during process. It never felt right. Evictous was wrong. I never felt right to say Delta was captive. I always filled in the words "God is captive of my soul". I have officially denounced and I am awaiting my withdraw. They are taking their good time, and i know why. But I have officially left and have zero ties. God led me to all the bad luck I acquired after joining this cult of abusive women.

I respect their opinions however I strongly disagree with the concept of the overall perspective of joining a fraternity. They are not designed to fill a void but to give of yourself. Churches can be cult-like as well and they pull the wool over your eyes better than anything, especially many of the megachurches, which can embrace many divisions and cliques, not teaching the inerrant word of God, preaching against sins to include homosexuality, abortion, fornication, adultery, shacking up, etc, political party loyalty... I love Jesus and the church is in me as God is in me. Concentrate on substance over superficial matters.
Whether they joined for the wrong reasons or not, there is no righteousness found in these organizations. No matter how many good activities are done, it's self righteous and wicked and the root of it and the surface of it is of satan. I have to agree 100%. You join for your own reasons, not for others. There are many organizations and churches that are just as, whatever you want to say. Do your own research..I never looked at it like they are mentioning it, and I have been a fraternity member for 41 yrs. There is nothing written anywhere that you can't be a Christian and be saved if you are in a fraternity or sorority! And besides, this is just their individual opinions.

I knew I would never be in the same fraternity as my father even though I went to the same college. I just played basketball, went to class, and kept The Most High first in everything.

I have to respectfully disagree with this. Everyone that is in my chapter are god fearing Christians, plus you were never forced to go through with any process. These men chose to do this for their own reasons. They don’t need to blame Greek life for what they didn’t get out of it. It’s pretty insulting to even try to compare something that was created for the advancement of colored people. Also created to give a support system to those who usually don’t have one. As a christian member of one of these organizations, the activities of hazing as referenced in this video have been denounced by most if not every organization in the Divine Nine. Yes, it still occurs of course just like corruption still occurs in the church. However, because that was their experience and their perspective on their own journey doesn’t make it reflective of the organization as a whole or mean that you are less of a Christian for being a member. I will also add that some of these Bible verses are taken out of context, which is often a tactic used by cult leaders. I point that out bc he called the D9 a cult as if certain churches or christian organizations cannot be considered as such. In regards to the Alpha prayer, it states “Oh, Lord, may the spirit of fraternity… control our lives, etc”. For those having a hard time with its meaning, consider replacing the word fraternity with brotherhood. Is not the spirit of brotherhood a spirit of love and support? The second commandment states to love your neighbor (brother) as yourself. As a Christian, I take that to be a prayer for the second commandment. My overall point in sharing is, if you are here as a Christian and deciding to pursue membership in a greek organization consider both sides. What these gentleman stated in regards to their experience is valid. But again, that’s their experience. Base your decision on the purpose, mission and ideals of the organization first. If they align with your personal goals, seek out a chapter. If the chapter on your campus doesn’t align with your values or the values of the fraternity/sorority, you may want to wait to try for an alumni chapter. That is OK. As a Christian and a D9 Frater that is active in alumni chapter that regularly attends regional and National conventions and is active in church, take this video with a grain of salt. Evaluate your own motives and decide for yourself if joining a fraternity or sorority is right for you.

Joining a Fraternity is not for everybody. Sorry they feel this way but nothing is evil about Fraternities and Sororities. We are not ocults. I'm in a Fraternity and I am a Christian. These individuals should have never joined in the first place. You so call Christians are just using this as an excuse to justify your religion. Those of us who are true Christians can determine the difference between religion and an organization that prides itself on service to our communities.

Don't forget that the other Greek organizations did not want to see the. Iota Phi Theta Fraternity into the Great 8. The Omegas and Kappa Alpha Phi made it known they didn't want to expand the great 8 to the Divine 9.
Definitely respect your decision to withdraw but it appears that the panel misunderstood the illusions in the ritual. At the end of the day you have to do what you feel is right.

I've never liked any organization/group that resembled a cult. One of the main reasons people don't leave cults is because of ties with friends and family members who are also in the cult. Sororities and fraternities are no different because of this.
You're within your right to define or inappropriately define what a fraternity or sorority is to you. Likewise, those of us who are members of said organization clearly differentiate ourselves from cult members in that we don't worship any of our elected officials or the organization, itself. They are not speaking on truth but rather their own individual experiences, which is interesting. I am member of a Black letter Greek organization (represented in this clip) and never experienced anything he mentioned. My chapter was/is Christ centered with nothing mentioned to the contrary (deities). There were actual bible verses used to encourages us during our process. I say all of this to say, that none of the negative experiences discussed in this clip are condoned, publicly or privately, by any of the divine 9 organizations...but chapters have some autonomy and may have inserted their own ritualistic slant (which is unfortunate). Lastly, I want to address the use of the word 'divine' when used to describe the 9 Black Greek letter org. It is lazy exegetical work to somehow insinuate that the use of the word divine, in this context, has anything to do with God. Sure, one can easily make that leap but I still would call it lazy. Divine was used to describe these Black Greek letter orgs., not in a godly manner, but rather to hold them up as excellent/delightful. For example, we've all had a meal that we thought to be divine or met someone that had a divine smile.

People who pledge know this before they get in but they pledge because they think it will garner them the connections and info they need to boost their career or connections. I cannot agree with your comment. I was well known and popular well before I pledged Omega Psi Phi at the HBCU I attended. I always treated people with respect and got it back tenfold before I got any letters. I didn't pledge my frat for credibility. I pledged because I knew what my frat stood for and to help better my people. I shared this sentiment with other like minded brothers. I am also a proud Mason, Eastern Star, a Sublime Prince, and a Shriner. Not once did I take a pledge or oath to worship the devil. People are afraid of the unknown because they're on the outside looking in rather than seeking the knowledge to look in the right places for the answers they seek. The organizations aren't as secret as people think. Knowledge is power once one is educated.

They joined for the wrong reasons. Even today as Kappas in my 40's we give scholarships to local schools and provide community service for families in the community. Nothing negative has come from being in a fraternity. They all got personal issues. Being cut from this cloth is not for everybody

I wish these people would cut the crap. This has nothing to do with spirituality, it appears that they expected something more and didn't like the price they had to pay to join the organizations. I don't care where you are there is a small group of individuals that run certain things, that's the concept of a fraternity/sorority in a summation. The problem is in the black community we have diminished Greek Life to pure socialization. We are supposed to be "Brain Trust" 10% Du Bois mentioned to Boot Strap the entire race. As it relates to our white counterparts, they build jobs create jobs and provide a sense of dignity and purpose for their communities. All of the Fraternities/ Sororities were founded on Christian principles within the confines of Christianity, a great percentage of the founders were clergy. It appears that the majority of these people are opposed to conflict and hated the price they had to pay in order to join that's apart of life, that's what you should have learned through your process. As they profess to be biblical scholars, a focal concept within the Bible is suffering. That's a focal point of any pledge process, furthermore participating in a job, an athletic, and even more so the military. I have yet to see anyone denounced the military even the people that go A-wall they still receive the check given to them by the military/government. Within this life, you have to give something up in life order for something larger to emerge and manifest. The gentlemen read a scripture from Proverbs written by King Solomon the grand architect of the Masonic Order. Jesus Christ a carpenter received his teaching from the Egyptian Secrecy System, (Masonic Based) Moses the great deliverer was trained by the Persians, and Greeks. None of these individuals denounced their college degree's, you had to indulge in a ritual in order to receive a coat of arms from your alma mater even more so every school has a mascot as well as every fraternity. I understand their arguments, but my argument is simple no matter where you are there is a small fraternal group that runs things, the problem is in the divine 9 we have marketed, diminished and belittled majority of everything in our organization to partying drinking and socializing. I get it, but all of the fraternity's are worth so much more than that. These people should have never denounced anything their voices are needed in all of there fraternity's the problem is would they have been as received by others around them? I am morally convinced that is a huge problem for all of them on a very strategic level is acceptance. The gentlemen mentioned I joined because it appeared as if I could get girls then the other gentlemen mentioned the comment about one of the AKA's perceiving him to be dull. Those occurrences are socialization tertiary issues. Life is not at all fair but life is still good! You have to give something up.

A distant acquaintance gave me that book over 25 years ago in college and she said anyone who is considering pledging needs to read that book...she was a delta and i dont know where she is today nor do u see her on any pics with my friends who are members...I remember that moment vividly and think that the Lord led that moment.

I have started reading this book after your comment. While I find the book extremely interesting a big part of it for me has been the link between knowledge of Ancient Egypt passed on an credited to the Greeks. I haven't really found much of a connection between the book and denouncing BGLOs. As an HBCU student in the mid 80's I never understood the purpose of black frats other than for the popularity aspect of it. Anything these groups do in the community could easily be done without them. We are already segregated enough without doing it to ourselves.

I was an HBCU student in the mid 80's, in the south, and the segregation thing was very real. I played football, was in ROTC, and was a member of a frat so my mindset was extraordinarily elitist and segregated...but God! What the ex alpha stated is totally correct. I. A black man that became a mason as a young man in college. It ran all through my family. But for some reason. I didn’t stay active in it. It was just something that kept me from it. I then pledged a white fraternity. Kappa sig. and during the ritual. I remember things being said from the Masonic ritual. It all stems from masonry.

When I was in college God would not let me pledge a Greek letter organization no matter how much I wanted to. What the former member of Alpha Phi Alpha stated is totally on point at 7:30. I used to think that I was missing out but when I found out who I truly was as an individual and a man of the most high I was able to understand that my bond with him is the ultimate bond needed more than anything else in life. When I learned about the power of oaths and covenants as a man I was able to really thank God for shielding me as an undergrad at a PWU that looked at BGLA as something to aspire to

If you are joining a fraternity to just to belong or get some identity then you have bigger issues and should not seek a fraternity or any organization for that matter to fill the void. This is the problem with all those on this panel. They were looking to be made whole. The point is, my spirit told me is was not right, but i convinced myself it was christian based and that things would be different once i crossed. Even after crossing sands, i forced myself to be passionate about it but deep inside, I never accepted it in my heart. I rebelled against the greek rules, handshakes and parafenelia afterwhile. I have officially denounced and I am awaiting my withdraw. They are taking their good time, and i know why. But I have officially left and have zero ties. God led me to all the bad luck I acquired after joining this cult of abusive women.

I have to respectfully disagree with this. Everyone that is in my chapter are god fearing Christians, plus you were never forced to go through with any process. Yes because the religious patriarchy hates women and will always designate evil as being a "her". They worship a male god because they stole it from women. Now they have women so brainwashed they are bowing down to a male god and hate themselves as women.
As a christian member of one of these organizations, the activities of hazing as referenced in this video have been denounced by most if not every organization in the Divine Nine. Yes, it still occurs of course just like corruption still occurs in the church. However, because that was their experience and their perspective on their own journey doesn’t make it reflective of the organization as a whole or mean that you are less of a Christian for being a member.
I will also add that some of these Bible verses are taken out of context, which is often a tactic used by cult leaders. I point that out bc he called the D9 a cult as if certain churches or christian organizations cannot be considered as such.
In regards to the Alpha prayer, it states “Oh, Lord, may the spirit of fraternity… control our lives, etc”. For those having a hard time with its meaning, consider replacing the word fraternity with brotherhood. Is not the spirit of brotherhood a spirit of love and support? The second commandment states to love your neighbor (brother) as yourself. As a Christian, I take that to be a prayer for the second commandment.
My overall point in sharing is, if you are here as a Christian and deciding to pursue membership in a greek organization consider both sides. What these gentleman stated in regards to their experience is valid. But again, that’s their experience. Base your decision on the purpose, mission and ideals of the organization first. If they align with your personal goals, seek out a chapter. If the chapter on your campus doesn’t align with your values or the values of the fraternity/sorority, you may want to wait to try for an alumni chapter. That is OK. As a Christian and a D9 Frater that is active in alumni chapter that regularly attends regional and National conventions and is active in church, take this video with a grain of salt. Evaluate your own motives and decide for yourself if joining a fraternity or sorority is right for you.

I am member of a Black letter Greek organization (represented in this clip) and never experienced anything he mentioned. My chapter was/is Christ centered with nothing mentioned to the contrary (deities). There were actual bible verses used to encourages us during our process. I say all of this to say, that none of the negative experiences discussed in this clip are condoned, publicly or privately, by any of the divine 9 organizations...but chapters have some autonomy and may have inserted their own ritualistic slant (which is unfortunate). Lastly, I want to address the use of the word 'divine' when used to describe the 9 Black Greek letter org. It is lazy exegetical work to somehow insinuate that the use of the word divine, in this context, has anything to do with God. Sure, one can easily make that leap but I still would call it lazy. Divine was used to describe these Black Greek letter orgs., not in a godly manner, but rather to hold them up as excellent/delightful. For example, we've all had a meal that we thought to be divine or met someone that had a divine smile.

I cannot agree with your comment. I was well known and popular well before I pledged Omega Psi Phi at the HBCU I attended. I always treated people with respect and got it back tenfold before I got any letters. I didn't pledge my frat for credibility. I pledged because I knew what my frat stood for and to help better my people. I shared this sentiment with other like minded brothers. I am also a proud Mason, Eastern Star, a Sublime Prince, and a Shriner. Not once did I take a pledge or oath to worship the devil. People are afraid of the unknown because they're on the outside looking in rather than seeking the knowledge to look in the right places for the answers they seek. The organizations aren't as secret as people think. Knowledge is power once one is educated.

They joined for the wrong reasons. Even today as Kappas in my 40's we give scholarships to local schools and provide community service for families in the community. Nothing negative has come from being in a fraternity. They all got personal issues.

I wish these people would cut the crap. This has nothing to do with spirituality, it appears that they expected something more and didn't like the price they had to pay to join the organizations. I don't care where you are there is a small group of individuals that run certain things, that's the concept of a fraternity/sorority in a summation. The problem is in the black community we have diminished Greek Life to pure socialization. We are supposed to be "Brain Trust" 10% Du Bois mentioned to Boot Strap the entire race. As it relates to our white counterparts, they build jobs create jobs and provide a sense of dignity and purpose for their communities. All of the Fraternities/ Sororities were founded on Christian principles within the confines of Christianity, a great percentage of the founders were clergy. It appears that the majority of these people are opposed to conflict and hated the price they had to pay in order to join that's apart of life, that's what you should have learned through your process. As they profess to be biblical scholars, a focal concept within the Bible is suffering. That's a focal point of any pledge process, furthermore participating in a job, an athletic, and even more so the military. I have yet to see anyone denounced the military even the people that go A-wall they still receive the check given to them by the military/government. Within this life, you have to give something up in life order for something larger to emerge and manifest. The gentlemen read a scripture from Proverbs written by King Solomon the grand architect of the Masonic Order. Jesus Christ a carpenter received his teaching from the Egyptian Secrecy System, (Masonic Based) Moses the great deliverer was trained by the Persians, and Greeks. None of these individuals denounced their college degree's, you had to indulge in a ritual in order to receive a coat of arms from your alma mater even more so every school has a mascot as well as every fraternity. I understand their arguments, but my argument is simple no matter where you are there is a small fraternal group that runs things, the problem is in the divine 9 we have marketed, diminished and belittled majority of everything in our organization to partying drinking and socializing. I am morally convinced that is a huge problem for all of them on a very strategic level is acceptance. The gentlemen mentioned I joined because it appeared as if I could get girls then the other gentlemen mentioned the comment about one of the AKA's perceiving him to be dull. Those occurrences are socialization tertiary issues. Life is not at all fair but life is still good! You have to give something up.

This is ridiculous. Why do people equate Fraternities to religion? They are secular institutions that has nothing to do with your religious beliefs. You can practice any religion you desire. The Fraternity doesn't get involved in your spiritual life.

A distant acquaintance gave me that book over 25 years ago in college and she said anyone who is considering pledging needs to read that book...she was a delta and i dont know where she is today nor do u see her on any pics with my friends who are members...I remember that moment vividly and think that the Lord led that moment.

I have started reading this book after your comment. While I find the book extremely interesting a big part of it for me has been the link between knowledge of Ancient Egypt passed on an credited to the Greeks. I haven't really found much of a connection between the book and denouncing BGLOs. Moreso just the association of neophytes back them learning at the mystery schools and maybe some of the symbology associated with the book and BGLO.
Would love to hear your thoughts on the book as it pertains to this topic.
The book makes it seem as the Greeks stole from Kemet. They did not, they learned willingly. It was European Scholars that took the credit and awarded it to the Greeks.
