As much as I love everything about this movie, I'm just now seeing a flaw in Billy's logic here. He doesn't want to travel with the team to avoid any attachment so it's easier to let them go. That's fair enough, so he sends Pete on the road in his place. But in traveling with the team, Pete would naturally become attached to the players as Billy himself said it would happen to him too. Problem is, here we have Billy telling him he should learn how to cut them when that's the entire situation Billy didn't want to be in himself yet he puts Pete there.
I don't think it's a flaw in Billy's logic so much as a necessary growing pain for Pete to go through. Billy is trying to coach Pete and give him more experience to move up in the organization and maybe even one day replace him. Pete is a great numbers guy but he's socially awkward and struggles when interacting with people. I think both instances are Billy forcing Pete out of his comfort zone and making him interact with the players so that he can see them as people and not just numbers on a screen. It sucks that Pete has to eventually cut players that he's grown attached to but it's also important that he personally goes through that experience so he better understands how to maintain a professional relationship with the players he's managing.

I know this was just practice and not even a real scene, but any player who buys a house that doesn't have a long term contract is just stupid. If you have a 5 year or longer contract, with a no trade clause, it's worth it to buy a house. If you only have a couple years, and can be traded, you get an apartment. Risking buying a house in the latter scenario is just foolish.
I wouldn't call it that risky in all honesty unless it's a buyer's market for housing since if it's a seller's market you can just list the home you bought and have it sold pretty fast most likely due to supply being outweighed by demand.
