    Want to clarify one thing on the video. Based on the comments I'm getting the feeling that a lot of people think I'm nit-picking or criticizing the movie. Not my intention... I think the movie is excellent and because it's a movie, a lot of the "inaccuracies" or decisions made by the director/editor are for ease of narrative, flow of the scenes, and overall making the movie work for general audiences. I just find some of the differences interesting and sheds some light into the filming process and decision making in the editing room.
    For instance, things being out of order in the movie versus the real game... I firmly believe they filmed them in order, but in editing it didn't flow as well as what they did in the final cut. If it makes the movie better dramatically and from a flow standpoint, then for the movie's sake that is a good decision.
    Some people may disagree, but I find enjoyment in pointing out "errors" or "inconsistencies" in some of my favorite movies, mostly because it sheds light into the filmmaking process and why certain decisions are made, and deepens my appreciation of the movie. In other words, "nit-picking" a movie to death for me is not a "Movie Sins" wag of the finger, but instead done out of an appreciation and understanding of the movie.
    That said, the two most important things in the game (Mike Sweeney's HR and Hatteberg's HR) were absolutely spot on. All of the other things pointed out were minor and really inconsequential to the overall plot and themes of the movie.

      Sometimes when you are filming, you just never get a shot to come out the way you picture it in your mind. So, you may need to elevate other shots a resequence to make the narrative flow together. That’s the difference between filming a documentary and making a drama. It is more important to get the emotional truth of the movie correct, than the factual, chronological order.

    The most impressive thing about the movie to me was Casey Bond (guy who played Chad Bradford) did a great job in the movie replicating how the actual Chad Bradford pitched. I know Bond did play baseball before turning to acting, but that still can't be an easy thing to just go out there and throw the ball like that.

    • @BaseballsNotDead
      @BaseballsNotDead  2 года назад +215

      I have a theory that they actually had an entire subplot filmed about Bradford struggling in high pressure games that was cut out (it's in the book). That's why they had an actor play him and not a baseball player extra, left in a speaking line for him, and during game 20 they emphasized the pitching change in the 8th inning (showing the manger coming to the mound, a few closeups on Bradford, etc). The book didn't really have a resolution to that subplot, so they cut it from the movie because there's really no resolution to the conflict which is what you want in a movie story... but you can see traces of it in some of the footage that was edited down.

    The most accurate parts of the recreation in the movie were Justice falling into the left field wall on the Tucker double, Sweeney's home run, how he wasn't sure it left the park and taking a few steps and watching it before running the bases, the game tying base hit for the Royals, which landed in almost the exact spot and the throw home was damn near exact (almost looked like they used actual footage here), and Hatteberg stepping into the box, the ball, and the home run swing. Even the way Pratt ran the bases, all the way down to the celebratory arm swing and pump were almost exact to what Hattie did in the actual game.

    I'm a fan of how they Hollywooded the call for Hatteberg to PH. Art Howe engineered the 90s Astros, brought Bagwell and Biggio to the majors and won consistently. To have him as the de facto villain was my ONLY weakness for the movie. They even had Jonah Depodesta sneering at an ESPN report that gave Art credit. For them to give him that moment in this movie was big for me.
    Overall it's pure Magic. Truth is Stranger Than Fiction, right? If I was watching a fictional movie and the team blew an 11-0 lead with Tim Hudson on the mound only to win on a walk-off HR by the sweetheart player of the movie, ON THE DAY of the record win streak?? I would turn it off then and there.

      Also they did it for cinematic value. Baseball is a difficult game to see as a team game, and they were emphasizing how much one player can change the game so drastically. Plus, the focus is on the players and not the fans for the purpose of the movie, so the director was probably trying to make it seem like the spotlight was on the players

      For all of the editing decisions and minor inaccuracies, they absolutely nailed the error at second by Tejada, Mike Sweeney's home run, and Hatteberg's at bat. It shows they put in a lot of time recreating those 3 shots. For the one hit that was bobbled in the corner, I don't think they were able to get convincing footage of the bobble (it's hard to recreate a mistake accurately and look authentic) so they cut to real game footage of the bobble for a couple of seconds (and also dimmed the lighting on that real game footage to match their movie footage). They did it in a way where you don't really notice it.

    I found it absurd that there was never a mention of starting pitching in the film. The only pitcher discussed was a reliever (Bradford), meanwhile the A’s had guys like Zito, Mulder, Hudson, etc... And Beane had no problem getting guys with a bunch of college innings on their arms, and thus shorter career windows. This certainly should have been in the film.
    One last thing about the book and film that was silly, the idea that OBP value was somehow invented by Beane and his Ivy League assistant. Gene Michael & Bob Watson did this almost 10 years earlier in NY and built a successful dynasty. The whole philosophy that Beane describes in the film of taking pitches and knocking out starters is exactly what the Yankees were doing years before this. The only difference is that Beane had to keep cost in mind, whereas Michael could go after guys who take pitches/get on base without worrying so much about cost (Boggs for example). Aside from the “money” part, the entire baseball philosophy in the book/film was not revolutionary.
