    When I was on the worst point of my insomnia anxiety, I had some nights where I had Hypnic Jerks NON STOP. And I really mean non stop. One night I would try to fall asleep and was awakened by terrible Hypnic Jerks for as long as 7 hours until I finally was tired enough that they disappeared. I was seriously concerned they would never go away and prevent me from sleeping forever. But I've discovered one thing about those jerks that is always true: they ALWAYS disappear when you're tired enough, so they are really just a stress symptom and nothing to worry about!

    Thank you (greatly) for your channel & information Daniel & also others commenting here.
    I, myself have been PLAGUED by these hypnic jerks for the past near month & am BEYOND anxious & nerve shredded when nearing my bedtime that i'm drinking alcohol (not to get completely drunk) but to avoid this terrible experience altogether & manage to sleep without the jerks. I'm WELL aware this is NOT at all healthy, but i'm caught in the cycle of worrying, hence exacerbating the problem & lost on how to "employ the method" of losing the fear "going with it" as yet. I'm not dealing with this at all, but relieved to know more of what you've explained here & other's comments & feeling less alone with it.

I am myself a doctor and have hypnic jerks and twitches (they started after severe stress) that interfered with my sleep. Now im taking low dose pregabalin (150 mg daily) and they dissappeared. I had it for a few days except the last two nights. Seems like it reduced.
    Step outside in daylight for 45 minutes or more. You can be under shade if its too sunny.
    The other thing is, avoid/ignore the thought of the anticipation of not getting sleep. It gives anxiety and makes things bad.
    Try and go to sleep like you did before the jerks started. And do it everyday.
    It will reduce or even go away.
    I've posted this comment on a few videos so more people can be at ease.

    Hey daniel, after years of not having these anymore I had a pretty bad episode of them last night. What scares me is I was not under any particular amount of stress or anxiety, which is what initial brought them on in the past. Everything was normal and routine in my life, only thing I can think of is I did have a very busy and physically demanding day at work. I was eventually able to sleep but it took hours. I ended up going down the rabbit hole again and have read horror stories about people who have them permanently.

  • @lauralush23
    @lauralush23 4 года назад +6

    It's a huge relief to know that they will eventually go away. My big issue with sleep is hyperarousal (both jerks and hypnic awareness). I'm starting to realize no matter what supplement you take, they won't go away. I find magnesium helpful for me as a natural anti-anxiety supplement than what my doctor prescribed (a benzo). Since watching your videos on hypnic jerks and success stories, I have tried to remain calm about having them at night. However, it's still SO frustrating because Im thinking: wow I was going to fall asleep but my brain and body was like NOPE! So close 😅

    • @thesleepcoachschool8192
      @thesleepcoachschool8192  4 года назад +1

      Hey Laura! Thanks for staying in touch!
      You know I think magnesium is way better than benzos for several reasons. One being, if something requires a prescription, it implies that it's "real". It's a real medication used for a real disorder. Something is really wrong inside you. That's a real problem thought!
      If you take a mineral on the other hand it's like wellness. I'm well, just need a little bit of this mineral.
      This said, you know, only thoughts can in reality change your emotions. This may at first sound disappointing, but imagine this - when you know how to work with your thoughts, you can change everything! Check out the playlist on "The model"!
      Ok now onto those jerks. The most helpful tip I ever got was this - hypnic jerks are a normal sleep-wake transitional event. So look at them as a sign that you're falling asleep! A welcome sign that sleep is about to happen.
      Hope this helps and stay in touch!

      You will Ambre, surely. You’re learning and teaching yourself, this is the path to peace.
      You know what can really help by the way, having helpful goals.
      A very natural goal to have is to sleep well or to be calmer or to have more confidence.
      And of course, that’s where this program leads!! But not when those things are the goals. Because when we evaluate our progress based on how we slept any given night, how anxious we were or how much confidence we have, this will lead to performance anxiety!
      Peaceful sleep and peace of mind are side products of another set of goals like for example:
      “I will be kind to myself even if I didn’t sleep much.”
      Or “I can be gentle and not question if I’m getting it right even when I’m anxious.”
      You see how when the goal is to respond with kindness rather that to achieve a certain amount of sleep or state of mind… there’ll be no performance anxiety or goal oriented activity. This helps much!

      @thesleepcoachschool8192  3 года назад

      Hi there! Welcome to the channel and thanks for this question. You know, anything that only happens when your transition into sleep I think of as a sleep-wake transitional event like Hypnic jerks or Hypnic awareness. The brain is in a mixed state and all kinds of weird things can be experienced here. The key is always to not think of them as strange, not looking for and underlying cause and not trying to prevent them. Actually, looking at them as a normal way to transition, a welcome sign that sleep is about to happen - this really helps!

    I find it super helpful how you say that they are simply a sign of falling asleep. And I don't stress about it but I am still not falling asleep because of them.
    Also you said sleep deprivation makes them worse. Well that's shit because its a cycle 👀

    • @thesleepcoachschool8192
      @thesleepcoachschool8192  2 года назад

      So glad this made sense Vanessa. And you know, when we use the word still, that’s something we can learn so much from.
      -
      The word “still” is special because in itself, it teaches us so much that is very helpful.
      When we use “still” we are waiting for something to happen as a result of something we have done or something we are doing. It can be “I’m still waking up every hour even when I’m befriending wakefulness” or “I still feel anxious even if I acknowledge my emotions” or “I’m ok with Hypnic jerks but they still happen”.
      It shows us that we have some effort, some trying, some attempt at having control… which is always what leads to some trouble when it comes to sleep and our inner landscape!
      Now when you know this, you can take advantage by pausing when you notice yourself using the word “still”. You can take note of what it is you’re trying to change and by what means. And this is all.
      Awareness in itself is all needed. Objective awareness without self criticism. “Aha, I see what my brain is up to!”. And when you simply become aware, the effort fades by itself.
      -
      It’s so tricky but you know, trying to leave the cycle IS the cycle.

    Daniel, something strange with my jerks have happened. Basically before i wouldnt be able to take naps without getting jerks but now I can nap without issues! I have also accepted the limby jerks much better now - i used to fear them so much before but now I accept the jerky movements which makes them way less and i can sleep.
    HOWEVER, now I have another issue, still hypnic jerks where I can startle awake where my brain kinda switches a flip and turns on the light in me and I get startled awake alongside anxiety rushes which wakes me up. This can keep me up for hours upon hours. These are now the new type of hypnic jerks that I have a hard time accepting, before it was the jerky movements which I have accepted much better. I fear I won’t be able to accept these startles as well as I did the jerks , they seem more intense if I put it that way.
    Also, the way I can take naps now but have trouble sleeping during the ”regular night time sleep” - do you think this has to do with me not putting as much pressure on sleep during naps but when it comes to the night time sleep, there is more pressure which makes these jerks worse?

      Hi Shorfan,
      Thanks for being in touch and for all the support. You know when I read this, the first thing that came to mind was this concept of the type two error.
      Let me share this!
      -
      The human brain is a survival machine, it always wants to keep you safe.
      And it is very very cautious not to commit what’s called a type two error.
      You know the story of the boy who cried Wolf. Well the third time he cries wolf, the villagers don’t believe him! They failed to see that there was actually a real problem!
      The brain doesn’t want to commit this error. It thinks that if you think that this is simply anxiety, or this is just the same type of insomnia I had before or things like that, it will miss out on something that can really harm you.
      So in order to keep you safe, it always tells you to look for new things. It tells you that “it’s different this time”. It tells you “you’ve never had this before”, or “it was never this bad”.
      Those thoughts come from a good place. They come from a place where the brain is trying to keep you safe.
      But reality is, there actually is no Wolf in the sleep world! There is no real threat, there’s only a perceived threat.
      So if you were just aware of where these thoughts come from, it becomes much easier not to buy into them!
      You can just be kind to the brain, tell it that you understand that it is trying to keep you safe, but you don’t need to pay too much attention to what it is saying when it’s saying things like the above.
      This way you will teach it that there’s no threat and sleep will happen much easier.
      -
      Do you think this applies? Was this helpful?

      Hi Naomi, thanks for commenting and welcome to the channel!
      Hypnic jerks really are harmless. But they can be very disruptive! Especially when you think that they may be dangerous or a sign that something is wrong. You often notice things that are different with what you’re going through and what others say, that’s a way the brain tries to keep you safe by making sure you don’t “miss anything”.
      But there’s nothing to miss! And when you no longer try to figure them out or stop them, they no longer bother you.
      Check out this playlist I think it will help a lot!

But for people who are sleep deprived, the intensity can be high making them susceptible for startled arousals repeatedly. Hi Marcun! Very glad to hear you don’t have any insomnia, and this shows that you can have these very uncomfortable sleep related experiences and then still sleep well.
      There was someone just the other day who also had whole body jerks. You may find this comment on this video. Anyways there are many things that are a bit odd that happen as we transition from one state to another. Jerks, hallucinations, loud sounds, awareness of falling asleep jolting us awake...
      To me the key is to see that these transition events happen to everyone and are a normal part of falling asleep, but that we pay attention or try to stop them they get stronger.
      As you can tell, the key is actually simply to understand that they are a normal part of falling asleep. When you do, then there’s less mystery and less anxiety which is always very helpful.
      Understanding this also leads towards not investigating them and not trying to stop them.
      And just like with insomia, the less attention the better.
      A helpful analogy that I have started using is one of an airplane landing. There is often some turbulence and some shakiness on the airplane touches the ground. Which is completely normal! If the pilot would abort landing because of turbulence, then the landing would be delayed. But if they proceed, the airplane is soon on the ground. Similarly, when we transition from wakefulness into sleep, there is some normal turbulence there. Nothing strange or unusual!
      In fact, when you start looking at these jerks as a welcome sign the sleep is about to happen, that really helps. Because not only does it take you away from trying to stop them, but you’re actually OK with them happening. And when that happens, you are no longer going to be anxious and you’re going to experience less of them and sleep better!

      Hi Alex, thanks for commenting!
      First thing, nothing here is medical advice so make sure whenever you're concerned about your health that you talk to your doctor!
      This said, jerks and twitches are often seen with insomnia and happen because of hyperarousal.
      Imagine all the runners in the 100 m dash lined up waiting for the start signal. If someone sneezes the jolt! That's hyperarousal.
      If you check any new video, look in the description and you'll find an entire playlist on hypnic jerks, I think it could help you a lot!

      @thesleepcoachschool8192  2 года назад

      Hi Utkarsh,
      They happen daily the time to most of not all humans. But most people don’t notice them. It’s when we start thinking something is wrong that they bother us. When we let them happen and look at them as normal, then they stop bothering us.

      Hi, I’d say when we have jerks and not in sleep transitions during the day, they’re by definition not Hypnic, but often come from the same place: anxiety. We get really jumpy when we are frazzled, and knowing this can often be really helpful

    Everyone experiencing this might want to find a neurologist and ask for a "Brain Mapping". You can see which part of the brain is lacking certain waves (theta, aplha, etc), and you can try brain wave therapy to restore the brain wave to normal level. I've experienced this for a year, and so far by using brain therapy and prescribed medicine, I'm starting to sleep better. Hope it can help.

      @@Bratznasam Brain mapping helps to understand what's going on but in the long term, you need to know what causes the jerks. It could be stress or trauma. I would reccomend you going to a psychologist who can prescribe epileptic medicine to soothe the jerks first, then try to find out if you have stress or trauma that is causing the jerks subconsciously.
