False. If the Tamron 17-28 autofocus is at all slower it’s not noticeable. I’ve had both that and the 16-35 GM. Returned the G Master. The A7SIII is fantastic though and I recently switched from Canon.
The Sony ZV-1 is a very good option too for a small camera especially when you need something dedicated to filming, but don't have the money for something large. Also the ZV-1 is versatile where you can use it for overhead or secondary cameras as you start to build out your kit. Having a small camera like the ZV-1 gives you the ability to film in cramp places where the larger cameras won't fit, or are too cumbersome to deal with. Some other cameras to think of is the GoPro and Insta360, but really depends on the type of videos you are creating. I 100% recommend new film makers to buy a MacBook Air M1 and get Final Cut Pro X for editing if you are using a dedicated camera and if you are planning for a dedicated camera buy the MacBook and Final Cut Pro X before you buy the camera. Switching software is one of the ways to quickly stop momentum of a new channel and utilizing free software that doesn't have as much learning content will also cause issues. Plus getting the MacBook Air M1 you already know that that hardware will be able to run the Final Cut Pro X for almost anything you need to do as a new creator while if you already have a PC or even Macbook, it is not assured that the software will run well on the machine you have. If you are using your phone then iMovie will work just fine too. I make all of my shorts using iMovie because I can record on the phone, edit in iMovie, add the music tracks in iMovie, and then upload without ever needing to transfer the files to another machine.
I think the Sony 16-35 f4 is a good alternative to the Sony GM 14mm setup. 16-35 zoom range is key, it’s not huge or heavy, it’s ND filter compatible AND most of all it was image stabilization. That’s my go-to vlogger and I haven’t looked back! Great points Matti loved this one
Right now im a small youtube channel and im using on one side my photo camera (canon t6i/750d) and my celphone for vlogging, and im getting a mic with a long cable to get better audio, for now works and its helping me get better and actually apply what i learn with you channel 😄
I've got the A7C with the Tamron 17-28 and for someone small like me, it's the perfect setup. Also, the Tamron's autofocus is FANTASTIC and not just for the price.
Wow what an amazing explanation and run down thank you sir. I have been vlogging with the Canon 6DMark II with the Canon 16-35mm 2.8 lens for years now and I am very ready to step up my game... right now trying to figure out how much I will be actually able to make from selling all to upgrade to that Sony one you mentioned at the beginning
I like this one! Got to the point fairly quickly and didn’t have to wait 5-10 minutes of random day in the life stuff that has nothin to do with the title. Waiting for the a7iv to come out!
We do gardening videos and I’ve been known to ramp up the shutter speed rather than ND filter especially when always shooting outside in both sunny and shade areas. Also keep it at 1080p to make it feel more natural in a garden. Either way always learning here.
Have been using the a6400 + Sigma 16mm 1.4 so i can really vouch for its quality, i use it as my main cam on my channel. Highly recommend it for those starting out. Now working towards getting the the a7siii 🙂
at 7m40s You talk about the Tamron 17-28mm lens.... I just wanna add that I just bought this to go with my Sony A7iii and the auto focus isnt bad at all!
Canon M6 mark ii, with the 11-22mm lens is pretty awesome for vlogging. One point that is immensely important to me is the weight. And price 😛 so aps-c works better for me, it's 1/5 of the price and 1/3 of the weight ❤️
Agree with the nd filters. I barely use any and it’s rare that anyone notices it or at least cares. I also love the Tamron 17-28. So light and a lot cheaper. The ECM-B1M mic is also a good reason for Sony.
yea i just got the fx3 and have the 7siii. before i was shooting with the sony a7iii but the no flip screen was just annoying. love the new set up tho,. brought my videos to the next level :) :)
@@mattih Absolutely! Funny you mentioned the RP, I was going that route, then was looking at the R but went for the A7C since it was similar price points. CAD prices are crazy!
Canon M50 MK1 is 650$ (sometimes 500$), apsc sensor, mic jack, interchangable lens, flip out screen, 4k if you need it, nice colors and yes, we can definitely tell when people use Iphones or any smartphone.
Can't go wrong with the A7SIII. I went with the Tamron 17-28 instead of the 16-35 GM and I'm thrilled with it. I use the Deity D4 Duo in vlog mode and for stuff I shoot in the house I use the Rode NTG. Loving the quality from this group of gear!
I personally use the Sigma 14-24 2.8 for my videos. It's really a underrated lens and even if I have to put the NDs between the lens and sensor it's still amazing to use.
I just got the Sony 6400 at the beginning of the year and I’m loving it. It’s my first camera. I also just got the rode mic NTG which has been great so far. I use davinci resolve and have been super pleased. All good things!!!
I've been using the 13' M1 Mac Air for couple of months now and I can highly recommend it, Matti. Battery life is superb and editing on FCPX is extremely smooth and fast.
Currently love my RP but a lot of my friends are using Sony. Canon is having a hard time competing lately but the RP was still the cheapest full frame camera I could get and it delivers pretty well. A little bummed that there is no 120FPS or C-LOG but besides that it handles like a champ.
Hi Matti. In the case of the Sony A6400 Kit and the 16-50mm lens, there is no Crop Factor, because the lens in that kit is for cameras with APSC sensors.
It's true what you said about the raw aspect of RUclips. For the majority of RUclips content most viewers don't care what camera you use so long as the content itself (story telling) is very good. I started to realize that this past year because before I felt like if I use the best gear people will start watching me but that's not the case. I talked to a content creator and asked him what camera he used and he said the iPhone 12 🤯 lol that's when it all just clicked for me.
Osmo Action & Osmo Pocket 2 are great and relatively cheap alternatives especially for those starting out. GoPro is good. Audio doesn't have to be expensive
Alright, I use the OG Canon 90D and the 10-18mm. 4k, light cheap lens, good optics, wide. No blurry background however but not a $5K price point. Also, the Sigma 18-35 is just stunning, but a bit tight on the face. For vlogging, action cameras all day everyday. I use the Sony X3000. No need for a $5000 setup. Your day was not that interesting :)
About two years ago this guy convinced me that iPhone is not good enough for video, now I'm shooting my silly RUclips videos with eos r + 15-35mm lens. No regrets, but I'm including clips from iPhone 12 Pro Max in vids as well without getting noticed :) Canon RP is a bit confusing choice to have. Sure it is great with the f2.8 15-35 mm lens, but the price of the lense is 2,5 canon RP cameras :)
Canon R6 with the EF adapter and the 24-70mm f2.8 and the Ride NTG Videomic. Setup is incredible and the 4K footage and even HD footage is a HUGE step up from the Canon 80D I was using.
I just sunk a lot of money ( well at least to me) into camera Sony A7c, microphones (3) tripods (3), editing programs (2) and other gear and now I’m working on lighting. I’m getting ready to amp up my tutorials ( silversmith and lapidary) now my question is lighting????? I do product shots along with silversmithing and lapidary tutorials in fine detail . I’ve been looking at aperture lighting, rgb lighting, soft box lighting….. omg I’m outta my league on all of this but determined. My channel needs a huge upgrade with consistency. The gear and editing has been my hold up. Now I must make this work. Loving your videos, they have been a tremendous help. Any suggestions, on camera cold shoe light and surrounding studio lighting advice would be awesome 😎 thank you again!!!!!!!!!
I think the only thing missing is lighting. Best budget light option? A window! And hopefully the sun. I finally upgraded to the a7siii and couldn't be happier. I use all Tamron lenses and have no complaints.
I used a a7siii to shoot b-roll for a car commercial recently and was really wowed. It REALLY got me when i said to the director “I’ll switch over to photo” and he said “No, we can just pull stills, those will be fine for TV.” I have a Nikon Z6 and Fuji XH-1, both phenomenal cameras IMO. However, I’m leaning toward more video now. Not that either of the aforementioned are less capable, but they have limitations. I was originally deterred by Sony after using the a7iii on shoots (didn’t like the menu). But now, body-wise, I’m a bit willing to forgive, and the secondhand lens market for E mount makes that a lot easier. Although my current lens collection (10 Nikon lenses) would implore me to reconsider, I’m honestly looking at either the new a7iv or the a7siii. Would you recommend switching given my current investment? Have you had any experience with Nikon or Fuji, and if so, what is your take regarding developments for video capture? P.S. I forgot to ask but what’s your lens of choice for vlogging? If I had to guess it looks like you’re using a G Master 24-70 F2.8 which looks really nice. Would you recommend that over faster primes like 24, 35, etc?
The Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 is incredible! I use it all the time! It is just my go to lens now. And the image quality is almost as good if not the same as the 16-35 GMaster. Also the autofocus is really good on that one too! So I would highly recommend this to anyone!
Hey Matti, I really love your videos and you inspire me to take better pictures and videos. I have a quick question. I have noticed something about the cameras and lenses you review. Why doesn't Nikon make the list ever? I have noticed it with others as well. Does no one use Nikon cameras for vlogging or photography? Just my curiosity.
Well, you don't need Full Frame no have a ultra wide angle view, it's just harder because of the crop factor. For example, on sony aps-c cameras you'll need a 10mm to achive a 15mm ff equivalent and there is a lens with that focal lenght, the 10-18 f4 OSS, which was used by Casey Neistat in 2016 or 2017, i don't remember exactly, when he used the sony a6500.
Hai matti,. Sony has stakes in tamron hence tamron have access to native sony Autofocus algorithms. They don't have to reverse engineer these things. Do try tamron lense if you get the chance.
This video is super helpful. I currently create content for my real estate business. Mainly using my iphone and my t7i for talking head-style videos at home. Although everything appears pretty decent for what I need it for. I think it's time that I level up my content creation. Looking at the A7s III initially but after pricing it out it was more than I wanted to spend. But, that A7C recommendation looks like it may be it for me. Thank you for putting this video together.
I have a Canon sl1/100d and an Osmo action . should i start vlog with osmo action or buy a 10-18mm lens. unfortunately I'm a broke person (refugee in Turkey) so i need to plan carefully for my budget. ty for answer. ty for good videos.

I just feel like the motor tech in the 16-35, the 24-70, and the 70-200 are all in need of an update, especially compared to the most recent lenses.
I would rather go with the Tamron because of weight, price and aperture if you don’t really need that 35mm.
F4 version is soft af most people will choose 17 28 tamron rather than deal with the softness of 16 35

Thanks for the tips ✌🏼. Great video.
Matti! Still feel this Rode Mic is the best?
Gear is King!
This is just add after add. Good luck
Great details not just about what you need but why. Thanks!
Matti, big fan of your channel. What AF and other settings do you use on your sony a7siii to vlog?
couldn't have said it better! Very intelligent and insightful list. insightful is the operative word.
Excelent content bro, thanks. Just the "gear is king" was so loud, damn, listening on my headphones.
Was just waiting for it at the end there for the gear is king to come back on. Love it, it got a chuckle out of me. 👍🏻
I have a Canon sl1/100d and an Osmo action . should i start vlog with osmo action or buy a 10-18mm lens. unfortunately I'm a broke person (refugee in Turkey) so i need to plan carefully for my budget. ty for answer.

I am thinking of buying it ??
Came for the Vlogging gear and saw you guys are also aggressive skaters! Nice one, how do those Roces ride? Didn't know they were still making those things
I love seeing rollerblading on your channel 😍
I was the 100th like 👍🏻
I appreciate that 😊 🙌🏻 sorry I don’t have a prize tho. I hope my appreciation is enough
@@mattih more than enough! Love your content!
