    Wish the military had just gone to 6mm arc over the new sig spear platform. You save so much weight with the 6mm ARC and like Mac said, tons of ammo options, unlike the sig spear. For those who hate on the 6mm ARC, there’s tier 1 units using it currently, Noveske being the main company that is supplying the systems, and they are getting great feedback. So I hope and pray the 6mm ARC is here to stay and gets more and more popular in the DOD

    • @iiscd5970
      @iiscd5970 2 месяца назад +14

      6mm ARC didn't exist at the onset of the NGSW program, and meets neither the intent or requirements of the program. Seems like a great option for certain special operations applications. I happen to love what this cartridge is capable of, but I doubt it would be scalable for mainline infantry given that it makes tradeoffs in longevity of the weapon for the capability gained. Mainline infantry can't afford to keep guns in tip-top shape quite the same way special operations units can and this system is known for accelerated parts wear and bolt breakages.

      @@iiscd5970 I'm retired ARMY and two of my buddies are still with the RANGER Bn's and they are one of the Tier 1 guys that adopted the 6 ARC. They are also using the one round that is considered the big brother to the 300 blkout. We were still using and they still are using the Glock 19 when the big ARMY adopted the peace of crap sig 320. Just like they're still using the tried and true updated M4 with 77gr 5.56. If it ain't broke why fix it, oh and the 6ARC upper receiver can be swapped out with the M4 upper by pushing two pins. The SF side of the house has deep pockets and doesn't follow the big green ARMY dodo.

    • @iiscd5970
      @iiscd5970 2 месяца назад +9

      @@brazzy1467 again, 6ARC, 8.6BO, and other wonderful specialized cartridges are great for specialized roles, but the comment I replied to suggested that an AR chambered in 6ARC should have been adopted instead of the XM7. I'm pointing out an AR in 6ARC wouldn't make sense for the role the XM7 was adopted for.
      Personally, I'm not a fan of the XM7. I like the idea of designing a new set of weapons systems all using the same cartridge to replace M4, M249, and M240, but I think that NGSW program requirements meant the XM7 was never going to be better than an M4. We'll see whether BIG ARMY continues with it in the future or the M4 will continue to persist. To the top brass in the Army the logistical benefits may outweigh the disadvantages of the platform.
      If we're looking at this from a civilian perspective, 6.8x51mm and the XM7 are entirely pointless. We all have ARs in 5.56 already and they work well. We don't have the budget or logistics concerns of BIG ARMY to make switching to 6.8 make sense. For us, like USSOCOM, the advantages of 6ARC are apparent, and the trade-offs are less an issue because we're dealing with them on a smaller scale. For us, parts wear and bolt breakages aren't that huge a deal. We don't need to worry about supporting thousands of rifles with an increased maintenance schedule like BIG ARMY would. If you're a civilian getting into 6ARC I already assume you know more about your rifle and the maintenance it requires than the average grunt. It's not hard for us to keep an extra bolt on hand and replace the barrel as needed.

      @@iiscd5970The literal goal the Army said they wanted to do was bridge the gap between the 5.56 and 7.62 nato. Then they just went full battle rifle cartridge. The arc would literally fill that role of the initial statement.

    I like the idea of the 6max. Same bolt. Just swap barrel and magazines. You can get a gun for a reasonable price. Or spend as much as you want. Ammo prices for both are too high. 6arc needs a dedicated upper because of the bolt, or a upgraded metal, as in expensive bolt to be reliable.
    Plus i don't want my tax dollars going for the heavy sig rifle, nor do i want a waste of money 6arc unless they get down to FN direct impingement 556 prices our government already pays. Both 6mm shoot 308 distances. I think geisselle sells 6 arc mags for over $100. That's worse than HK.

      Geissele is putting chf barrels into their 6mm arc rifles. They are not planning to sell it in parts because it actually is proprietary. Upper, bolt, and barrel extension are not mil spec ar15 parts.
      With they being said, I am in waiting for my Robinson Arms XCR in 6mm arc which comes with a cmv steel & chrome lined barrel, according to their CS when I asked. I went this route because it isn't an ar15 so it isn't limited by the small frame receiver. Therefore the bolt has more material on it, which actually resembles an ak bolt. Unfortunately they are just as pricey as a noveske, geissele, kac, and lmt

      go watch the CHF process and understand the volume vs necessity in regards to cost of tooling and setup. Crucible 416R SS has similar properties to CHF in tensile and yield strength, but what do I know. The CHF is merely a milspec requirement for select fire weapons, something you wont benefit from. Take the corrosion benefit of SS because we know, you will rust before you burn it out.

    • @pb7087
      @pb7087 2 месяца назад

      @roscoep1082 I burn out stainless barrels in my match guns every season or two. I’m looking for longer barrel life. Barrel as seen by my chrome lined barrels (CHF being just a plus).. I’m well aware that CHF requires large numbers to be financially reasonable for a company but we have several companies with them that could pump out 6 ARC barrels. I also realize that it is a manufacturing method that was originally done to decrease costs of mass produced military barrels. But it is more than just a TDP specification. I was skeptical, but military testing has shown benefits into the multiple 10s of thousands of rounds of barrel life. And you don’t need to have firing schedules with cyclic rates of fire to see those benefits.
      If I want ultimate precision for a competition gun, sure I go SS with a cut or button rifling. But for the rest of my semi auto rifles, including precision-oriented gas guns, I’m looking for chrome lined. CHF if a plus, but not actually a requirement for me. The biggest thing is chrome lined. I’d love it if Criterion came out with a 6 ARC barrel.

      Neither and both ,yeah I know WTF, in 2024 anyone may as well look at .277 fury the new army 6.8 and leave the other two (6arc, 6.8 spr)to fight for mid range. Solgw even has a 6max now …tbh why not get a 6mm or 6.5 ar10 pattern at this level of grains. All the manufacturers are waiting to see if big army will really drop the M4, 416, spear LT type 5.56 and transition to the new “.277 fury” which is also known as 6.8X51mm. (XM7, Smallish frame Sig Spear/ XM250 automatic machine gun) if you want a more traditional round then 6.5 Grendel is about realistic max from small frame pattern AR, plenty ammo and also added performance above 5.56. Between the two you listed imo proof carbon 6arc…but is it really worth the cost of the scope to accommodate the longer ranges? Not to mention when scope is 2-5kUSD.

      @@Nylonschemein the end it comes down to ammo cost... There's always the next new fancy cartridge but if it's not available or if it costs 5 bucks a round you probably won't use it that much. Hang it on your wall if you want but let's face it, you're not a tier 1 guy and you won't need your gun for home defense either. You probably also aren't shooting at 800y. Ever. You're all monkey'ing around at the range within about 100y and 556/223 works just fine for that.

    • @colestahl1265
      @colestahl1265 2 месяца назад

      I thought 6max used 350 legend magazines. I thought those mags had the same capacity issues as 6arc. Geissele sells 6 arc mags that are 30 round but they’re almost as long as a magpul 40 rounder.

    • @roncterry
      @roncterry 2 месяца назад

      I agree that 6MAX would be a better cartridge for this application. As far as magazines go, a 350 Legend/6mm Max magazine will be essentially the same length as a 30 rnd PMAG once DuraMag gets them released. The 350 Legend case diameter (.390”) is only the slightest bit bigger than 5.56 (.378”) where 6 ARC is quite a bit larger (.441”).
      A combat load out of 6 ARC with Geissele 30 rnd mags costs nearly half the price of the gun just for the magazines alone! $125 per mag is criminally expensive. I wish DuraMag would redesign their 6.5 Grendel/6 ARC magazines to get rid of the extreme curve. That curve is not necessary because the case taper of 6.5 Grendel/6 ARC is actually less than 5.56. You can see this with the Geissele mags, they have less curve than 5.56 mags.

    200 times enhancement in barrel cooling is effectively impossible with a single material. The company representative should know the difference between times & percentage. Also wind resistance is determined by velocity & bullet diameter/length. Not BC or bullet weight which simply aid in maintaining velocity.

Also cartridge claims verses 5.56mm where rather overblown. For a .5mm increase in bullet diameter, 5.5 grain increase in propellent, 13-28 grain increase in bullet weight(over 77grain). In a carbine barrel 6arc is not even a upgrade over issued 5.56mm 16" SPR's. None of this is on the interviewer it's on the information source.

    The claim that the barrel fluting causes the barrel to cool off TWO HUNDRED TIMES faster is ludicrous. Barrels cool primarily with convection with some conduction and radiation. If you wanted to increase cooling capacity by two hundred times you’d need to increase cooling surface area by close to the same amount. Adding flutes is certainly not increasing the surface area by 200 times. The fluting might increase cooling capacity by 5-10%. Those claims along with names like “Disruptive Deep Flute Barrel” are setting off my snake oil alarm. Let’s be real: they put a fluted barrel on a 6ARC gun and sprinkled buzzwords in the name. It may be a nice gun but we shouldn’t be fooled into thinking that they reinvented the wheel.

    • @mckinleyjohnson9894
      @mckinleyjohnson9894 2 месяца назад +1

      I meant 200% faster😅. The total surface area per linear inch is increased by ~30% compared to our standard contour. Top temp on an identical cadence is decreased by 10-15% depending on bore diameter and cut length. Just another contour option. Its name describes the shape and intent. Deep fluting that disrupts SMoA expansion and reduces s-wave reverb.

They helped to spearhead the widespread mfg of correctly gassed rifles. Now a days you can get a new rifle and throw a conventional/hybrid baffle can on the end without overgassing the gun. They are part of the reason 11.5 mid length barrels are a thing. Hate them if you want but you cannot deny their work on modern weapons.

By keeping the hand on one side you reduce some torsion that gripping the pistol grip can introduce to your trigger pull. Not terribly common to use while running and gunning, but...if you can keep control of the weapon, why not I guess.
