  • Today I'm trying something completely new and learning how to paint digitally using Procreate on the iPad. I'm using a photograph I took of mushrooms in Bramley Fall Woods as a reference, you can see this more of my photos on my website: racheloates.uk/

Hey everyone, welcome to my second channel where I'm going to be making art videos in which I test art supplies, show you some of my art work from the last 10 years, walking you through my creative process and trying to improve my own art along the way!

hey long time subscriber here. This isn´t related to the video at all but I wanted to thank you for being so open about being on the (autism) spectrum and all. I recently got diagnosed and it came very much as a shock. Growing up in an school enviroment where "autistic" was often used as a slur it was relieving to hear you talk about your experiences and in that way you were my first step onto the path of learning self acceptence with this new label. In case you´re reading this have a lovely day

I'm so glad this channel exists. One of my favourite videos from your main channel was one from a few years ago where you just chilled, talked, and painted. It was strangely so comforting and I've been hoping for more and more in this vein. Love it! :)

I follow a handful of art channels on and off, but none of them have ever so wonderfully shown the progression of someone getting better at art from so early on in their journey. I love how well you both praise and criticize yourself, it's heartwarming.

Watching the joy and satisfaction you create for yourself through exploration of your creative hobbies is one of the biggest motivators for me to indulge in mine. I find my inner child craving time every day to flex my artistic muscles, but my adult brain shuts down the urge for whatever reason and says "not until you finish x, y, z" I think it's part of my ADHD because I'm terrified I will get sucked into hyper focus and lose track of all my other responsibilities. But your videos remind me to prioritize my own joy and creative expression. I also just get so happy for you whenever you are happy because your joy is so infectious Rachel!!! Thank you for the positivity you release into the world just by being yourself :)

It's not silly to say that you are proud of your work, it's important and healthy to be proud of yourself when you worked hard and it shows in your result!
I am a fellow digital artist and some advice that I can give is don't zoom in too much, I am actively trying to unlearn constant zooming in, because more often than not it does not show in the final artwork and it takes much longer. You did already find this out yourself though, so good job on that!
The painting turned out quite lovely 😊
A general fundamental art advice I can give, is to use values and saturation to draw attention to important parts of your artwork, when you have a lot of very dark or bright spots, it can look a bit chaotic, because there is no clear focus point. You can check your values by overlaying a white or black layer with the filter "color" on top, that shows you what it would look like in greyscale and helps you to see dark and bright spots. This is however quite complicated to think about when you haven't done so before, especially when just starting out with digital art, so don't stress about it c:
I am really looking forward to seeing more of your art 🍄

The painting came out really good 😄 a technique that I learned that you may want to try is a self coloring line. If you put a layering mask on the linework layer, you can color the linework indifferent areas & can add interesting depth 😊

It turned out pretty well I think. I personally was thinking about trying digital art as well but didn't really know where to get started. But now I do. Now I just hope my iPad isn't too old for this.

I haven’t done art in months bc my iPad broke and I lost all of my procreate art. This video has inspired me to invest in a pen for my windows surface so I can get back to drawing. Thanks and your drawing is mystical, bravo!

There’s nothing wrong with tracing the photo, though.
It’s not even someone else’s art, which might be a problem because of authorship. It’s your own!
If you want to do it without tracing, that’s great, but there’s no reason to be ashamed or apologetic about it if you do tracing.

This is really amazing. Especially for the first attempt! I suck at digital drawing and painting, I just can't do it as good as hand drawing, but I still want to be able to one day.

I'm also trying to get into digital but I've got PS and the base program doesn't have any of the lovely texture brushes I see you using in yours! (Or at least I haven't found them) This looks great for your first piece Rachel! It's honestly baffling how traditional and textured digital art can be nowadays, just awesome :)
