My Dutch grandfather told me every chicken coop needs an old radio. (We left it low on the classical station) The music soothes the chickens and keeps away predators. A few guinea hens will also help because of the noise they make and they eat the bad bugs. 🐔🐥
Love that idea of the music. I remember seeing a semi commercial free range set up with multiple massively huge tractor coops, and he had classical music playing on an outdoor speaker off one of the tractors. Very soothing.
Hey thanks! Technically if someone bought this shed brand new it would end up running them slightly less than an extra large store bought chicken coop which would still be pretty expensive. BUT you can definitely find good deals on sheds that would work just as well as this one does for me!
@freesince1776 I'm pretty sure it's closer to $3000, I had an 8X10 from the same company for $1000 on sale, 10 years ago. Nobody is giving away perfectly good sheds like this.
Great coop idea but here's some advice from an experienced chicken owner. First, if you get, at all, below -5C you're going to want to insulate that shed and bring down the ceiling height. There's too much head space for the heat to rise so your chickens will freeze in winter. Coops look tall, but they're usually raised off the ground to allow air below and keep the ceiling low. Also your run has no shade. Find some old roofing tin. People tend to give the old stuff away, and put that over the top. Honestly, you could have made it half as high as you did, but it's fine. Just cover the top so the chickens have shade in the hot summers. Other than that, looks great.
@@regulark3v165 Whichever way the prevailing wind blows, cut your windows for an in/out flow. Then cover with dual layers of chicken wire to keep predators out.
@@antagonizerr Should these chicken wire windows be higher up by the ceiling to allow the heat that rises to go out the windows and breeze comes in? Where I live, North Florida we get a lot of wind.
The shelf at the door is where the word "threshold" came from. To keep back the straw and threshing from blowing in from outside, very old word and probably going extinct. Your idea actually has a name! You have some good ideas.

I tried to find laws on turkeys out here and Utah, but could only find stuff on hobby animals which mentioned ducks, chickens and other animals. Do you happen to know what the laws are?

Right?! It was definitely a bummer. Luckily the city actually worked with us on a lot of stuff. A technicality made it so our property isn’t zoned for goats and pigs but they let us keep those if we brought our chickens within their rules. It sucked, but now that it’s done it’s okay!
I just did something similar- but I found an old grandpa built children’s playhouse and rebuilt it! Came out so cute! Love your run- I don’t see any ventilation in the coop.. I’d cut some hopes and wire cloth them Ip near the roofline so all the gassed can escape. Well done!
Ronie I have a childs wooden playhouse built when my grandchildren were young. It was the last gift from my Mom before she passed. Am working on cutting down the legs and bringing the house part down lower so I can clean it easier. Will also have enclosed chicken runs around it!!! Now I just have to be able to get my grown boys out here to help.Lol!!!
Great find! Good job on the roosting ladder & other chicken accessories! Be sure to close off that hole you drilled for the power cord with hardware cloth. Rodents, snakes & weasels could all easily get into your coop through the hole.
Looking back at when i started and all my own mistakes and learning, this video is probably one of the best pieces of advice i've seen out there. The things i'd do differently now is night and day.
I highly recommend covering least a portion of the run with a tarp or some type of cover. Of course it provides shade & weather protection, but it also helps chickens feel safe from overhead predators like hawks. Chickens are easily frightened by overhead movements. Happy hens lay the best eggs!
We ended up moving the coop and we had to downsize the run due to city regulations. Still have the same coop but the run is quite a bit smaller. The next project is adding a roof over the entire current run for sure!!
Nice coop. One thing I see a lot in these videos (from all new chicken owners) are big watering systems. Fresh water is a huge deal when it comes to egg quality. If you’re only adding fresh water to old stagnant water the water quality sucks and the eggs aren’t anywhere near as good. An aerator is necessary for big watering systems to keep the water from going stagnant. Just a thought before you add the 55gal drum for 15 chickens.
Good points. I am hoping to use a 5-gallon potable water container (recycling an old camping water carrier) as the reservoir, and flexible tubing to a PVC pipe with drinking cups or pecking nipples. I plan on putting a small pump in the system and a heater in the tank to prevent it from freezing. Can set a thermostat to control the heater but most only come on when water gets close to freezing - automatically. Thinking of activating the pump on a timer or with a float switch...
This is exactly what I'm just doing. We inherited 6 sheds and are repurposing one to become our new coop. Our idea for the run is exactly the same as yours too. I'm happy to see this works!
I love the way you designed a door that slides vertically instead of swinging open, allowing you to staple the fence onto the coop to protect the chickens from predators.
So far that hasn’t been an issue for me. We have a few rats and mice on the property but it isn’t a HUGE issue around here and we haven’t had any get in (so far…that we know of at least).

This is a fantastic idea!. I've been agonising over a coop and it's build for over a year now. Everyday that I research and check ads it stresses me out. The way the world is going unfortunately chickens have become a necessity. I grew up on a farm and we had chickens, but that was year's ago. The city wasn’t very happy with the size of the coop.. we were able to keep the coop but we had to down size the run! Now that it’s all moved and done I can absolutely do a more in depth video! I am extremely sick at the moment, so give me a bit to get it going 😂

I did the same thing! When I purchased my house there were 2 7x7 plastic sheds on the property. I converted one into a coop. Took the plexiglass out in the windows and replaced them with hardware cloth for more ventilation, cut a hole in the side for an omlet automatic door. I'd recommend putting more ventilation in your coop. Since then I purchased a $400 10X12 Metal shed, I'll post a video of that soon.
That’s how we got my greenhouse build also. The old owner left two large carport things. Just the frames. So I put them together and made my very long big greenhouse.
@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead we have vents at the very top of ours. They were actually already made in the scrap wood we got. 2x4’s with round screen venting so we just used those.

I have an old metal shed and a dog kennel. I’ve been wanting chickens and was thinking about using the dog kennel fencing but now I think I can make a fabulous chicken coup fenced area for them for almost free!!! Thank you so much for your ideas ❤ subbed
My son got me a 10x10 dog kennel from his friend whose dog passed away. The price was right free. I only have 3 hens. Our city only allows up to 5 hens, no roosters.
When I built our run, I actually used metal sides from an old metal shed and put (2 panels 2ft x 8ft ) as a partial roof because here in Wisconsin we range from -5 °F in winter with snow and up to 100°F in summer so a little bit of cover helps our birds alot . Other wise excellent ideas and keep learning I like that you say "I'm not much of a builder" but you are trying !

You did an excellent job showing what it takes to do a chicken coop and chicken run for new folks wanting to get started. I shared it with a friend who plans to turn an old shed in their yard into a combo chicken coop and garden shed by petitioning the two off with a wall. They only need enough room for 6 chickens, so it can be easily done.

At first, I scoffed at this video, because I was planning on getting 50 chickens for my farm when I move to the right area, and build up to 1000 birds. But after thinking about it, and giving this video a shot, I realized that if I do the same thing you did, just with multiple sheds and per a heating, feed, and water system I feel comfortable with, this is a great idea. The one thing I learned from my daughter's adventure with chickens is to have the wire in the run smaller so the chickens can't stick their heads out. Her original run had larger openings and one hen stuck her head out and a raccoon took it off. :(

The same thing happened to me. I am a newbie. There had been a hawk sitting in the tree across from our small croup. We had just brought them out to get some sun and grass. I didn’t think about the hawk sneaking up from behind us, walking on the ground. Then , it happened so fast. All she could get was sweet baby’s head. It was our first lost. My husband just cried and cried. I was in shock. I don’t know if I am cut out for this. 🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️
I have bears and other wild claws and fangs that love to eat my chickens. I used to use Halloween noise things that one plugs in. They would wear out eventually. The radio idea is a great idea! Brainstorm: I just need a trip wire or laser or something that would trigger the finally to the 1812 overture! Drums, symbols, horns blaring and of course... CANONS! on large speakers!
Great idea! Great video! You might consider an automatic door opener at dawn and closer at dusk. We love ours. Also, maybe a solar fan on top of the coop? Great for heat dispersal and more air for the chickens, which we all know is super critical. Finally, with the avian flu, it’s being reported that a cover is important to protect from from wild bird droppings. A tarp on your most excellent run could easily be done. Great job!

I'm getting ready to build a bigger run and modify an old wooden play house. I happen to have a billboard tarp (yea) so will do that! Hardware and chicken wire for walls, solar lighting, no heat but no drafty walls. Its 6:58 am, ( 2 roosters crowing since 3:30 am 😒🐓🐓🤬. I hope this muffles them. But, they also harass the 5 hens... so gotta figure that as the girls can't get away. Ideas besides soup?
We are in the process of building ours. We are using all scrap wood that was dropped to us via a local contractor. It’s all in great shape. For the run we found a large trampoline for free that we took apart and are using the frame and adding our fencing to that and attaching it to the coop. It is also concreted into the ground. For inside the coop we are going with two large removable rubber type mats so we can just pull them out and wash with hose etc. we also are building the coop right up alongside my very large greenhouse on the side that we designed to lift for extra airflow and pollinators. Because the chickens will help keep the grasshoppers and other unwanted things out. Our weather has been crazy the last wk so it’s put the build on hold but it is pretty close to done. We will be raising meat chickens not pets. About 80% of this build was free! Savings thousands. ❤️ love your coop and run and the cost savings is crazy right?!
Looks great, a lot of good ideas. I would recommend removing the heat lamps, though. The chickens don't need them, and they create a major fire hazard.
@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead You can use heat lamps as long as you WIRE the body of the lamp, not the hanger. If you do that no issues! Or you can use wall heaters that help with heat but don't cause fires. We've used both. And we also used a reptile water heater in our water buckets which mostly kept the water from freezing, but we also used a water heater (pan style) and a metal bucket on top of that. Great job BTW and very innovative!
I do agree that those are a fire hazard. However, if you don’t have any light inside the coop, chickens cannot see well in the dark. So unless they’re super familiar with the area, they may not be able to see well enough to get on their perches. Some chicken owners decide to put lights with timers. But I do agree that the lights should not be fire hazards and that you have to choose carefully.
Flat coop heaters work great & are safe. I get mine from Tractor Supply. For lighting, I do use heat lamps but I do attach them with extra twist wires so there’s no way they can fall although I’ve heard the bulbs could burst on rare occasion. I also have a motion detector nightlight in the coop. Anytime they shift or move it comes on so they can see to hop up or down the roosts.
I've seen comments regarding your chickens being warm enough. Perhaps you already know, but 1) the deep layering system adds a great deal of natural heat as the waste decomposes, and 2) chickens have no problem sleeping close to one another for extra warmth if needed! 😊 So you probably won't need the lamps unless you've got little ones in there or need to see at night. 👍
Good point about the easy and low cost solution by utilizing a used shed. Even when purchased new from Home Depot is less costly than building something from scratch. However, any shed like shown, without windows, would be a "sauna" in summertime, due to non existing ventilation. This would be my only concern.
Oh for sure! I know that here where I am this exact shed brand new is $1200 from the lifetime store. After filming this video we added additional ventilation to help and so far it hasn’t been too bad! As soon as winter is over we are taking all the windows out and putting screens up on them as well! This last summer we had weeks of 100f weather and we were able to keep it under control with the vents we added!
Thanks for the board at the door idea. That will help solve a repair issue in the old milk house I will be using for a hen house. Was concerned that the door frame no longer meets the floor. This will solve that. Wonderful idea. 2 birds, 1 stone. No pun intended.
That's a great idea to use a cheap, ready-made structure. We just finished a chicken coop made out of pallets. Very inexpensive, but a fair amount of work to get it done.
Yeah, we got hooked on the pallet projects too. Holy cow, the sweat equity was intense and honestly, the final product was disappointing. Now looking to tear it down and try again for more space (more chickens). That'll be a huge time & muscle investment (again). I love my feather babies, but truth is doing it by myself was hard. I'm in my 60s, short and not as strong as I use to be, lol. Great ideas in this video..
I know this post is older now but wanted to say “Thanks” for all this great info! I hope I can find a deal on a shed like you did. Would be interested in how you hung/installed the repurposed chain link gate. I’ll have to shop around for a couple of those.
What we learned in the last few years is that small opossums, skunks and a few other things can go through the 2 x 4 welded wire and even chain link fencing. You may want to add chicken wire to what you have to keep those smaller predators out. I know it doesn't look possible but it is.
Mice and rats can go through very small holes - much smaller than you would think. We have 6 inch rats going under the door to our coop that has less than a one inch opening. Time to redo the coop - again.

Right?! When it clicked for me I was so excited! Well good luck! Some areas are easier to find used sheds than others for sure. It took us a couple months to find ours, but don’t give up!
I’m in Australia. Probably fairly comparable summer temperatures. My chicken coop is a metal shed. I cut windows into 2 of the sides for ventilation/cross breeze. 3 total, each one maybe 2’ square, towards the top of the walls. Made little window frames out of scrap wood and stapled wire to those then screwed them on. The chooks are fine. Initially my neighbour had a huge tree there that hung over and provided great shade but they chopped that down so I let them out of the run on hot days and they hang out under the apricot tree. If it’s going to be around 35°C, which is 95°F, or above, I give them a block of ice with some fruit or veg frozen into it so they peck at the ice trying to get what’s inside. Doesn’t take much. One diced up apple or maybe 1/2 cup of frozen corn or peas is plenty for 8 girls. I do it in a square silicone cake pan, about 8x8. If it’s really really hot I’ll give them an ice block in the morning and then take out another one mid afternoon. And I keep a bucket of water under the apricot tree so it stays shaded and cooler. I’ve had chickens for about 9 years and have never lost one to the summer heat, and we’ve had some stinking hot summers in that time! I still have one of the first chickens I got at point of lay, so she’s 9.5 now. She’s also black and even she is fine in the heat. It’s probably easier for the white ones though. If I was planning to stay here I’d be planting vines and training them up the sides of the run to provide shade but I’m moving soon so I’ll do that at the next house. If you want chickens, get chickens. They’re tougher than you think!
@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead I like the bin feeder. I’m going to do that at my next place. The rest of my setup here is very similar to yours. I have hooded cat litter boxes that I ripped the flaps off as nesting boxes. Those potato/onion boxes look good though. I might try that next time.
I think you should add an exhaust fan. I have one in mine & it really brings the temperature down on hot days. Yours is going to cook in there. You could also add a window grate to keep out wildlife & just attach a regular fan over the window. But it won’t be automatic from a set temperature like an exhaust fan.

As soon as the tree above our coop gets it’s leaves it weighs the branches down and pretty much encases the whole coop in a shadow, but on our really hot days I do worry sometimes! It will definitely make me feel better with some good ventilation!

Just found you tonight. Yahoo someone else that has a shed for a chicken coop. I've felt so bad thinking I was the only one. . I only have a small shed 4 x 6 I think but it works. I made a run for them out of a 16 x16 metal gazebo that I got free and then covered it in wire. Adding a 12 x 16 covered run later on with a metal roof. They love it !
This is basically what I did. I also got the solar chicken door. Another awesome mod is to nail in a blue tarp draped underneath the perch so collect all the poop from getting on the shavings.
A great idea! I read that chickens should just have snow for water when the temperature dips. It makes sense considering that is what would normally be available.

I’m definitely planning on it! This was honestly a… “crap I don’t have a video to post this week so let’s throw this together” and more people are interested than I had planned on. I will be doing a much more in depth video on this in the coming weeks for sure! I will go into the roosting ladder, the door itself, the feeder, waterer, nesting boxes, etc. I work full time with 4 kids and one on the way so it might take me a few weeks to get it out, but it will be done!

Now I’m curious about the Amish made one! How is that?! We love our shed coop. All the room we need and then some, it looks good, easy to clean, just all around awesome.
We live on the East coast and we have a lot of Amish around us and they make many wood products, chicken coops being one. They are well built and constructed. Ours is about 30 sq ft of floor space and has 5 built-in nesting boxes with a door you can open to remove eggs. They are a bit pricey, but last much longer than the cookie cutter big box store coops.

What do you do with uncounted for roosters? I got 7 chicks, supposed sexed, 2 are roosters, now I have to choose and probably get more chicks . Chickens are 20 weeks, 1 has started laying (Silver Laced Wyandotte)
This has been my issues that has held me back from having my own chickens. I didn’t want to spend $1,000.00 + dollars getting my chickens setup to have eggs. I know egg prices are crazy right now but when you weigh spending $5 for a dozen of eggs vs $1,000.00 + dollars to have chickens the comparison didn’t make sense! Yeah it’s definitely costly to get started! Not everyone can find good deals on sheds, but if you can it can save so much money! We had to look for about 3 months, but we’ll worth the wait!
Great job! We did something similar but with a used $150 ice shack. Had the long seating areas on the sides perfect for the nesting boxes. Coops don’t have to be pricey and usually turn out nicer imo 😊
We just happened to have a horse barn I converted to storage and a chicken club med. Our chickens were happy. I miss them as couldn't take care of them anymore. Good idea

Great idea! I would use some hardware coth along the bottom and near the chicken door. A weasel can easily get through the panels and do some real damage.
My chicken coop comprised of an old large dog house ….straw…heat light for winter…in a fenced area of 12x12… My chickens laid there heads off…thru out left overs for them and had double Yokers all the time…they were happy and content
Addend.: You also have way too large openings in your wire enclosure. Use hardwire 2" squares at most for proper protection. Many predators can easily get thru your openings.
A shed won’t work in our climate where we get sub zero cold and 100 degree heat. It would be an icebox in he winter and an oven in the summer. It looks like it is working for you and that’s awesome!
Hubby is going to make a steel door with a lip covering the closed bottom so raccoons can't get their paws under to open it. And the steel won't rot out or soften up where critters could tear it apart.
Be careful with those lights i heard so many have broke and fell or the light blew up, I told my husband about that, about the different videos ive watched where people have talked about fires and loosing whole flocks, so weeks later, we had a guy selling us 3 baby turkeys the guy selling them to us his light blew up and killed the turkeys and chicks. We raise several breeds, just be careful with those lights, but you can look on different youtube videos and see what im talking about. I have hatched out 50 + chicks since January and have 15 adult chickens I have had chickens before and raised on a farm. But after all the diff kinds our silkies are like little incubators ours go broody a lot. And have set on any of the others eggs. But we also use incubators, and brooders, love your chicken house and run good job, and good savings, which we could all use right now. Thanks!
We actually did end up having one blow up after this video. Lights came down and will not be going back up! Once I do one or two more things to the coop I’m going to do a more detailed video on it and I will definitely be calling that out! Scary stuff, I’m glad we didn’t lose any birds though!

East Texas. The common garden snakes are fine up north, but since I've moved to Texas, I've seen rattlesnake, copperhead, cottonmouth, and coral snakes, all potentially dangerous to your health. (Understatement). The bird netting has tangled mostly rat snakes and rattlers. Oh wow, you get some awesome snakes out there! I love snakes, I’ve been interested by them since I was a kid. Here in Northern Utah we get the garden snakes which we love and then some rattle snakes but not by our house. I’m glad the netting has helped you!
We made friends with the old owners, we still talk to them all the time! The dad saw how much our kids loved the chickens so he asked if we wanted them! That whole situation changed our whole lives, we couldn’t have gotten any more lucky!

My Dutch grandfather told me every chicken coop needs an old radio. (We left it low on the classical station) The music soothes the chickens and keeps away predators. A few guinea hens will also help because of the noise they make and they eat the bad bugs. 🐔🐥

Love that idea of the music. I remember seeing a semi commercial free range set up with multiple massively huge tractor coops, and he had classical music playing on an outdoor speaker off one of the tractors. Very soothing.

Hey thanks! Technically if someone bought this shed brand new it would end up running them slightly less than an extra large store bought chicken coop which would still be pretty expensive. BUT you can definitely find good deals on sheds that would work just as well as this one does for me!
@freesince1776 I'm pretty sure it's closer to $3000, I had an 8X10 from the same company for $1000 on sale, 10 years ago. Nobody is giving away perfectly good sheds like this.
Lowes has and 8x10 storage shed for $500 that alone is cheaper and bigger than the coops that are less than half the size.
My point exactly 😂. I lucked out with mine, but you can find good sheds for MUCH cheaper than a large coop.

Great coop idea but here's some advice from an experienced chicken owner. First, if you get, at all, below -5C you're going to want to insulate that shed and bring down the ceiling height. There's too much head space for the heat to rise so your chickens will freeze in winter. Coops look tall, but they're usually raised off the ground to allow air below and keep the ceiling low. Also your run has no shade. Find some old roofing tin. People tend to give the old stuff away, and put that over the top. Honestly, you could have made it half as high as you did, but it's fine. Just cover the top so the chickens have shade in the hot summers. Other than that, looks great.

I tried to find laws on turkeys out here and Utah, but could only find stuff on hobby animals which mentioned ducks, chickens and other animals. Do you happen to know what the laws are?
I bought the smaller version of that exact shed and spent $800 new. I’m very surprised someone let that go for less than $200.
One time I even found this exact one in the box for $100! That’s definitely the best one I’ve found, but they are few and far between.

Right?! It was definitely a bummer. Luckily the city actually worked with us on a lot of stuff. A technicality made it so our property isn’t zoned for goats and pigs but they let us keep those if we brought our chickens within their rules. It sucked, but now that it’s done it’s okay!
I just did something similar- but I found an old grandpa built children’s playhouse and rebuilt it! Came out so cute! Love your run- I don’t see any ventilation in the coop.. I’d cut some hopes and wire cloth them Ip near the roofline so all the gassed can escape. Well done!

Ronie I have a childs wooden playhouse built when my grandchildren were young. It was the last gift from my Mom before she passed. Am working on cutting down the legs and bringing the house part down lower so I can clean it easier. Will also have enclosed chicken runs around it!!! Now I just have to be able to get my grown boys out here to help.Lol!!!
Great find! Good job on the roosting ladder & other chicken accessories! Be sure to close off that hole you drilled for the power cord with hardware cloth. Rodents, snakes & weasels could all easily get into your coop through the hole.

You can also close that hole up with steel wool. Works great on small holes.

I highly recommend covering least a portion of the run with a tarp or some type of cover. Of course it provides shade & weather protection, but it also helps chickens feel safe from overhead predators like hawks. Chickens are easily frightened by overhead movements. Happy hens lay the best eggs!
We ended up moving the coop and we had to downsize the run due to city regulations. Still have the same coop but the run is quite a bit smaller. The next project is adding a roof over the entire current run for sure!!
Nice coop. One thing I see a lot in these videos (from all new chicken owners) are big watering systems. Fresh water is a huge deal when it comes to egg quality. If you’re only adding fresh water to old stagnant water the water quality sucks and the eggs aren’t anywhere near as good. An aerator is necessary for big watering systems to keep the water from going stagnant. Just a thought before you add the 55gal drum for 15 chickens.
The big container is for the food, the largest watering system we have is only 5 gallons! But I definitely see why that could be an issue!
Good points. I am hoping to use a 5-gallon potable water container (recycling an old camping water carrier) as the reservoir, and flexible tubing to a PVC pipe with drinking cups or pecking nipples. I plan on putting a small pump in the system and a heater in the tank to prevent it from freezing. Can set a thermostat to control the heater but most only come on when water gets close to freezing - automatically. Thinking of activating the pump on a timer or with a float switch...
You can also just set a piece of copper into the water, and it will kill organisms.

So far that hasn’t been an issue for me. We have a few rats and mice on the property but it isn’t a HUGE issue around here and we haven’t had any get in (so far…that we know of at least).
I love that. I wanted to have chickens again but I'm dealing with health issues. Wish I had someone handy to make something like this for me.

The city wasn’t very happy with the size of the coop.. we were able to keep the coop but we had to down size the run! Now that it’s all moved and done I can absolutely do a more in depth video! I am extremely sick at the moment, so give me a bit to get it going 😂

I did the same thing! When I purchased my house there were 2 7x7 plastic sheds on the property. I converted one into a coop. Took the plexiglass out in the windows and replaced them with hardware cloth for more ventilation, cut a hole in the side for an omlet automatic door. I'd recommend putting more ventilation in your coop.
Since then I purchased a $400 10X12 Metal shed, I'll post a video of that soon.

That’s how we got my greenhouse build also. The old owner left two large carport things. Just the frames. So I put them together and made my very long big greenhouse.

I have an old metal shed and a dog kennel. I’ve been wanting chickens and was thinking about using the dog kennel fencing but now I think I can make a fabulous chicken coup fenced area for them for almost free!!! Thank you so much for your ideas ❤ subbed
My son got me a 10x10 dog kennel from his friend whose dog passed away. The price was right free. I only have 3 hens. Our city only allows up to 5 hens, no roosters.
When I built our run, I actually used metal sides from an old metal shed and put (2 panels 2ft x 8ft ) as a partial roof because here in Wisconsin we range from -5 °F in winter with snow and up to 100°F in summer so a little bit of cover helps our birds alot . Other wise excellent ideas and keep learning I like that you say "I'm not much of a builder" but you are trying !
I’m definitely doing a roof over it this winter! Last winter it was hard to keep dry in there so that’s definitely in the works!

At first, I scoffed at this video, because I was planning on getting 50 chickens for my farm when I move to the right area, and build up to 1000 birds. But after thinking about it, and giving this video a shot, I realized that if I do the same thing you did, just with multiple sheds and per a heating, feed, and water system I feel comfortable with, this is a great idea. The one thing I learned from my daughter's adventure with chickens is to have the wire in the run smaller so the chickens can't stick their heads out. Her original run had larger openings and one hen stuck her head out and a raccoon took it off. :(

The same thing happened to me. I am a newbie. There had been a hawk sitting in the tree across from our small croup. We had just brought them out to get some sun and grass. I didn’t think about the hawk sneaking up from behind us, walking on the ground. Then , it happened so fast. All she could get was sweet baby’s head. It was our first lost. You might consider an automatic door opener at dawn and closer at dusk. We love ours. Also, maybe a solar fan on top of the coop? Great for heat dispersal and more air for the chickens, which we all know is super critical.
Finally, with the avian flu, it’s being reported that a cover is important to protect from from wild bird droppings. A tarp on your most excellent run could easily be done.

I'm getting ready to build a bigger run and modify an old wooden play house. I happen to have a billboard tarp (yea) so will do that! Hardware and chicken wire for walls, solar lighting, no heat but no drafty walls. Its 6:58 am, ( 2 roosters crowing since 3:30 am 😒🐓🐓🤬. I hope this muffles them. But, they also harass the 5 hens... so gotta figure that as the girls can't get away. Ideas besides soup?

We are in the process of building ours. We are using all scrap wood that was dropped to us via a local contractor. It’s all in great shape. For the run we found a large trampoline for free that we took apart and are using the frame and adding our fencing to that and attaching it to the coop. It is also concreted into the ground. For inside the coop we are going with two large removable rubber type mats so we can just pull them out and wash with hose etc. we also are building the coop right up alongside my very large greenhouse on the side that we designed to lift for extra airflow and pollinators. Because the chickens will help keep the grasshoppers and other unwanted things out. Our weather has been crazy the last wk so it’s put the build on hold but it is pretty close to done. We will be raising meat chickens not pets. About 80% of this build was free! Savings thousands. ❤️ love your coop and run and the cost savings is crazy right?!

Looks great, a lot of good ideas. I would recommend removing the heat lamps, though. The chickens don't need them, and they create a major fire hazard.
Yeah we ended up taking those out 😂. They won’t be put back in next winter!
@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead You can use heat lamps as long as you WIRE the body of the lamp, not the hanger. If you do that no issues! Or you can use wall heaters that help with heat but don't cause fires. We've used both. And we also used a reptile water heater in our water buckets which mostly kept the water from freezing, but we also used a water heater (pan style) and a metal bucket on top of that. Great job BTW and very innovative!
I do agree that those are a fire hazard. However, if you don’t have any light inside the coop, chickens cannot see well in the dark. So unless they’re super familiar with the area, they may not be able to see well enough to get on their perches. Some chicken owners decide to put lights with timers. But I do agree that the lights should not be fire hazards and that you have to choose carefully.
Flat coop heaters work great & are safe. I get mine from Tractor Supply. For lighting, I do use heat lamps but I do attach them with extra twist wires so there’s no way they can fall although I’ve heard the bulbs could burst on rare occasion. I also have a motion detector nightlight in the coop. Anytime they shift or move it comes on so they can see to hop up or down the roosts.

I've seen comments regarding your chickens being warm enough. Perhaps you already know, but 1) the deep layering system adds a great deal of natural heat as the waste decomposes, and 2) chickens have no problem sleeping close to one another for extra warmth if needed! 😊 So you probably won't need the lamps unless you've got little ones in there or need to see at night. 👍
I agree 100%. Since filming this video we removed the lamps and we do the deep litter method 😂
Good point about the easy and low cost solution by utilizing a used shed. Even when purchased new from Home Depot is less costly than building something from scratch.
However, any shed like shown, without windows, would be a "sauna" in summertime, due to non existing ventilation. This would be my only concern.
Oh for sure! I know that here where I am this exact shed brand new is $1200 from the lifetime store.
After filming this video we added additional ventilation to help and so far it hasn’t been too bad! As soon as winter is over we are taking all the windows out and putting screens up on them as well! This last summer we had weeks of 100f weather and we were able to keep it under control with the vents we added!
Thanks for the board at the door idea. That will help solve a repair issue in the old milk house I will be using for a hen house. Was concerned that the door frame no longer meets the floor. This will solve that. Wonderful idea. 2 birds, 1 stone. No pun intended.

That's a great idea to use a cheap, ready-made structure. We just finished a chicken coop made out of pallets. Very inexpensive, but a fair amount of work to get it done.

Yeah, we got hooked on the pallet projects too. Holy cow, the sweat equity was intense and honestly, the final product was disappointing. Now looking to tear it down and try again for more space (more chickens). That'll be a huge time & muscle investment (again). I love my feather babies, but truth is doing it by myself was hard. I'm in my 60s, short and not as strong as I use to be, lol. Great ideas in this video..

What we learned in the last few years is that small opossums, skunks and a few other things can go through the 2 x 4 welded wire and even chain link fencing. You may want to add chicken wire to what you have to keep those smaller predators out. I know it doesn't look possible but it is.

Mice and rats can go through very small holes - much smaller than you would think. We have 6 inch rats going under the door to our coop that has less than a one inch opening. Time to redo the coop - again.

I’m in Australia. Probably fairly comparable summer temperatures. My chicken coop is a metal shed. I cut windows into 2 of the sides for ventilation/cross breeze. 3 total, each one maybe 2’ square, towards the top of the walls. Made little window frames out of scrap wood and stapled wire to those then screwed them on. The chooks are fine. Initially my neighbour had a huge tree there that hung over and provided great shade but they chopped that down so I let them out of the run on hot days and they hang out under the apricot tree. If it’s going to be around 35°C, which is 95°F, or above, I give them a block of ice with some fruit or veg frozen into it so they peck at the ice trying to get what’s inside. Doesn’t take much. One diced up apple or maybe 1/2 cup of frozen corn or peas is plenty for 8 girls. I do it in a square silicone cake pan, about 8x8. If it’s really really hot I’ll give them an ice block in the morning and then take out another one mid afternoon. And I keep a bucket of water under the apricot tree so it stays shaded and cooler. I’ve had chickens for about 9 years and have never lost one to the summer heat, and we’ve had some stinking hot summers in that time! I still have one of the first chickens I got at point of lay, so she’s 9.5 now. She’s also black and even she is fine in the heat. It’s probably easier for the white ones though. If I was planning to stay here I’d be planting vines and training them up the sides of the run to provide shade but I’m moving soon so I’ll do that at the next house.
If you want chickens, get chickens. They’re tougher than you think!
@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead I like the bin feeder. I’m going to do that at my next place. The rest of my setup here is very similar to yours. I have hooded cat litter boxes that I ripped the flaps off as nesting boxes. Those potato/onion boxes look good though. I might try that next time.
I think you should add an exhaust fan. I have one in mine & it really brings the temperature down on hot days. Yours is going to cook in there. You could also add a window grate to keep out wildlife & just attach a regular fan over the window. But it won’t be automatic from a set temperature like an exhaust fan.

@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead sure! Great project to get done before summer! I didn’t have a fan for years & now I can sleep in a little instead of looking at my camera app to check the coop temperature then having to run out & open the door. I love having one!
As soon as the tree above our coop gets it’s leaves it weighs the branches down and pretty much encases the whole coop in a shadow, but on our really hot days I do worry sometimes! It will definitely make me feel better with some good ventilation!
Great job. Considering Chickens and have thought about a store bought shed for the coup. Now, with this video, we know it can be done much easier than building one. Thank you for bringing this vision to light. Judi

Just found you tonight. Yahoo someone else that has a shed for a chicken coop. I've felt so bad thinking I was the only one. . I only have a small shed 4 x 6 I think but it works. I made a run for them out of a 16 x16 metal gazebo that I got free and then covered it in wire. Adding a 12 x 16 covered run later on with a metal roof. They love it !

This is basically what I did. I also got the solar chicken door. Another awesome mod is to nail in a blue tarp draped underneath the perch so collect all the poop from getting on the shavings.

Julia I got turned off by those big expensive chicken coops. While they are beautiful they are beyond my economic status!! Lol I am repurposing an unused childs wooden play house now.

I’m definitely planning on it! This was honestly a… “crap I don’t have a video to post this week so let’s throw this together” and more people are interested than I had planned on. I will be doing a much more in depth video on this in the coming weeks for sure! I will go into the roosting ladder, the door itself, the feeder, waterer, nesting boxes, etc. I work full time with 4 kids and one on the way so it might take me a few weeks to get it out, but it will be done!
We bought two coops, one amish made, one from tractor supply. The tsc one is junk already, just bought it 2 yrs ago. This is such a great idea!! Thanks!

We love our shed coop. All the room we need and then some, it looks good, easy to clean, just all around awesome.
We live on the East coast and we have a lot of Amish around us and they make many wood products, chicken coops being one. They are well built and constructed. Ours is about 30 sq ft of floor space and has 5 built-in nesting boxes with a door you can open to remove eggs. They are a bit pricey, but last much longer than the cookie cutter big box store coops.

What do you do with uncounted for roosters? I got 7 chicks, supposed sexed, 2 are roosters, now I have to choose and probably get more chicks . Chickens are 20 weeks, 1 has started laying (Silver Laced Wyandotte)
This has been my issues that has held me back from having my own chickens. I didn’t want to spend $1,000.00 + dollars getting my chickens setup to have eggs. I know egg prices are crazy right now but when you weigh spending $5 for a dozen of eggs vs $1,000.00 + dollars to have chickens the comparison didn’t make sense! Now if I can do something like you did or close, THAT MAKES MORE SENSE! Thank you
Yeah it’s definitely costly to get started! Not everyone can find good deals on sheds, but if you can it can save so much money! We had to look for about 3 months, but we’ll worth the wait!

Great job! We did something similar but with a used $150 ice shack. Had the long seating areas on the sides perfect for the nesting boxes. Coops don’t have to be pricey and usually turn out nicer imo 😊

Great idea! I would use some hardware coth along the bottom and near the chicken door. A weasel can easily get through the panels and do some real damage.

My chicken coop comprised of an old large dog house ….straw…heat light for winter…in a fenced area of 12x12…
My chickens laid there heads off…thru out left overs for them and had double Yokers all the time…they were happy and content
Addend.: You also have way too large openings in your wire enclosure. Use hardwire 2" squares at most for proper protection. Many predators can easily get thru your openings.
A shed won’t work in our climate where we get sub zero cold and 100 degree heat. It would be an icebox in he winter and an oven in the summer. It looks like it is working for you and that’s awesome!

Hubby is going to make a steel door with a lip covering the closed bottom so raccoons can't get their paws under to open it. And the steel won't rot out or soften up where critters could tear it apart.

Be careful with those lights i heard so many have broke and fell or the light blew up, I told my husband about that, about the different videos ive watched where people have talked about fires and loosing whole flocks, so weeks later, we had a guy selling us 3 baby turkeys the guy selling them to us his light blew up and killed the turkeys and chicks. We raise several breeds, just be careful with those lights, but you can look on different youtube videos and see what im talking about. I have hatched out 50 + chicks since January and have 15 adult chickens I have had chickens before and raised on a farm. But after all the diff kinds our silkies are like little incubators ours go broody a lot. And have set on any of the others eggs. But we also use incubators, and brooders, love your chicken house and run good job, and good savings, which we could all use right now. Thanks!
We actually did end up having one blow up after this video. Lights came down and will not be going back up! Once I do one or two more things to the coop I’m going to do a more detailed video on it and I will definitely be calling that out! Scary stuff, I’m glad we didn’t lose any birds though!

I wrapped the perimeter of my coop with wadded up bird netting to snag any snakes bent on eating the eggs. Works like a charm ☺️
That’s so cool! Where are you from? We get the occasional Garden snake here but not very often!
East Texas. The common garden snakes are fine up north, but since I've moved to Texas, I've seen rattlesnake, copperhead, cottonmouth, and coral snakes, all potentially dangerous to your health. (Understatement). The bird netting has tangled mostly rat snakes and rattlers. Garter snakes are our friend in the garden, and I'm always happy to see them, as they are harmless to people and are a sign of a healthy habitat.
Oh wow, you get some awesome snakes out there! I love snakes, I’ve been interested by them since I was a kid. Here in Northern Utah we get the garden snakes which we love and then some rattle snakes but not by our house. I’m glad the netting has helped you!

We made friends with the old owners, we still talk to them all the time! The dad saw how much our kids loved the chickens so he asked if we wanted them! That whole situation changed our whole lives, we couldn’t have gotten any more lucky!
