The rarely used "Claiming rule" came into place at this year's Loretta Lynns Amateur Motocross Championship. Brennen Schofield was looking to buy a Star Yamaha, but things got weird...

I done with the Deegan's now. I was a HUGE FAN, watching everything. The Deegan's were a great story of what America is supposed to be about. The land of opportunity, from rags to riches, done with hard work. It's understandable that the Deegan's were upset that Haiden's bike was claimed, but it's the rules, and rules matter. Brian Deegan could have put this to rest. He could have struct a deal to buy it back, right away. Brian Deegan should have stood up for Brennen because he did nothing wrong but follow the rules, instead of letting this kid get harassed by the Deegan fans. Take the high noble road bruh. It would have paid the Deegan's off ten fold, racers and fans alike. Haiden didn't need the factory engine anyway. Why are you riding a factory bike at a race that has this rule in place anyway... Now there will always be the story of how the Deegan's and Yamaha bullied a kid for following the rules because they made a stupid decision.

Bud it honestly was not Brian who would have been the one who was worried. Star is the one that would have been pressing and not wanting the bike to get into others hands and for good reason. I’m sure That bike has never been in the deegan a hands other than Haiden on the track. Star most likely brought the bike to the race themselves. If that was just a bike Brian built for Haiden I’d be willing to bet he would have not dealt with the drama and been pumped to sell it for so much. Star has the best bikes in the game right now and not for any other reason than hard work. Also, the price on the claiming rule is terrible. I would be willing to bet if you walked down the start line and talked to every rider who had a new bike they would tell you that they had way more than the cost of the bike into aftermarket parts. With this rule you could go to LL and pick out the rider with the richest dad and buy yourself a bad ass bike with 1 race on it for a lot less than it would cost to build it. For example, wheels are 2500,exhaust is 1200 on some bikes,a motor build could be anywhere from 1000-10,000 depending and the rich kids at those races dad’s will drop 10k on a motor without blinking. Triple clamps are 1000, graphics are 200, most a lot of the kids on the start line have kit suspension and that’s as much as a new bike alone. If some kid had forgone buying a bike for LL and saved his money he could have bought a 30k bike from a few non factory riders I am certain of it. I wonder how mad people would be at a father that throws away money on this race every year when he doesn’t let some random kid in the class buy his sons bike for a low price. The people who think that there aren’t at least 10 kids and a few that are total nobodies that have >30k bikes in that class are out of touch with reality this isn’t 2001 anymore. You don’t race this race out of a pickup truck with a tent anymore! There are semis pulling in and unloading 8 65’s on the lift gate!

@@chadsanner792 You make a great argument on why the rule is there. To try and keep the escalating bike costs down for the amateur class of racing, in an effort to make it more competitive. What the current costs in upgrades are, and what one shows up in, are not relevant. The rules state 2X retail for a claimed bike, that's what matters. After that, spend what one elects to. No one is twisting one's arm too. Everyone one does it with the understanding that they could lose the bike, and the over investment if the bike is claimed, not their $300k plus rig(s) and trailer(s).
In regard to Star Yamaha, they took a gamble knowing the risks. A very risking one at that. Probably in excess of $50k. Maybe it was arrogance on their part, thinking, no one has the balls to claim our bike, especially with a Deegan riding it... Someone did. In the end, they got off easy...
As for Brian Deegan, if Brian wasn't concerned, then why was he asking the kid, "Why are you doing this?" Him being concerned is completely understandable, Haiden is at the beginning of what could be a legendary career. He has a better start than he ever had... Haiden is his son, not Star Yamaha, he has the final say on what Haiden does on every level...

@@bigpapa1470 just to be clear on my opnion. I’m not saying they should have just ignored the rule as it was part of the rules. So if someone decided it was a good idea to choose to use this rule it looks like they lost a bike. I get all that. Now They are allowed however, to make a deal with the family to get them to not buy it or talk to them to explain why they think shouldn’t. We have no idea what was said about that part just hear say. I would also agree with you on leveling the playing field in the stock classes. Not so much If you’re gonna have a mod class. that class shouldn’t be limited or leveled. If so why even have it? If you can’t compete in the mod class due to money there is a class for you, the stock class. Limiting people from doing everything they can just down to a small amount? That’s what stock classes are for. My point about the vehicles they show up in was just a reference of how expensive the sport and general life expenses have become. There’s only a certain demographic that’s showing up to these things. You think a guy who can’t afford a good bike is gonna be able to buy a bike for 17k cash?? This kid showed up with 17k in cash. You telling me the class needs leveled for him due to money?? He!! No!! Obviously the kid can buy whatever he wants they just want a shortcut on the product. The rule isn’t to level the field. It’ll only allows people with a giant bank account to further circumvent the hard work. That is my big reason for the rule being dumped in that class. Also, my other point about what they show up in is you are not taking your kids to the am nationals all year on 100k a year job not spending almost a quarter of your gross income for the year on a bike. And Last, but not least there is absolutely none of this story that is verified other than he said she said. The guy that parked next to my buddy who was at the race said a guy he ran into at the creek told him…….. I wouldn’t decide who I support or who I do not on a gossip video. Some of the gossip is surly true, but to what extent? we have no idea.

I wonder how Brian would have felt being locked in a room behind closed doors with another kid's father, intimidating HIM (as he's a little weasel), because most fathers wouldn't intimidate someone elses kid, especially an under age one.. LL effectively shot themselves in the foot by trying to maintain the claim rule in any mod class. So why did LL allow them then? Because it opened up a segment that allows these up and coming riders that are heading for Pro to test their skills. And it gives the Amateur classed a chance to mingle with them, and it brings not only more revenue, but more excitement and publicity. For one if Star and Deegan didn’t actually run illegal parts then it’s pretty fucked up to say they are guilty without any proof. That’s the worst part of Amateur racing. Then why would Yamaha threaten to take a dealership away? Why did Yamaha make such a big deal about keeping the bike? MX is more about the rider than the machine. So many in MX don't think that though. MX is physical and mental fitness. Nothing to do with a little more power. After the rider it would be suspension, and then, at this level, not that important.

The claiming rule is used so rarely that it is believable Deegan's bike would be worth well over the claiming price. I wish we had video proof or audio recordings of the alleged interrogation as well as the threats that night from Yamaha. If those things did 100% happen then that is proof of some wrong doing. Cops do stuff like this all the time. You apply pressure and then people will incriminate them selves. The actions by the team during the process and after (swapping the motor) proves they did actually have something in the bike… was it still legal probably but it definitely was unobtainable by normal riders. Plus If Tim actually interrogated the kid with only Brian present and no actual parent or guardian present Then they 100% need to look into legal action against him or Mx sports. The fact that the kid was strong armed by Yamaha and they mentioned the loss of his local dealerships franchise. If it’s true then it just looks bad for Yamaha, Mx Sports, and the AMA amateur race scene. Deegan family is great for the sport but I’ve had enough of the favoritism at races! They should earn it like everyone else. I honestly believe mod class should just be removed completely from amateur racing. Suspension work should be the only thing allowed.

Given the fact that Star has had the fastest 250 for a while now, you’ve got to think they were highly motivated not to turn that bike over to a third party. So yeah, why bring it! That said, with how good production bikes are, wouldn’t it make sense for the AMA to have a production bike rule at the amateur level? We used to have stock and modified classes back in the 1970s, with the NMA, before there was a LL. There were Occasional protest over someone riding a modified in the stock class. My brother raced his stock bike in modified and often did better than he did in stock. Horsepower doesn’t play near the role in MX that people think it does. It’s more about usable power, and production bikes make more power than most riders can use. Hadens lap times with a stock motor are not surprising. Eli is the only factory Yamaha guy that hasn’t detuned the factory 450. He might go even faster if he did!

    • @joepettus9045

Its not about contesting the rider in this case. Its more of is Star using things that only factory yamaha can get? It may be a totally legal motor but say use a certain head or lifters or oil pump or rings and pistons that we average consumer can't buy for our yamaha. This is amateur where every ride should be able to be built by any racer. If you allow factory participation into amateur races well then what and or who's to keep them honest with any class? Its a great rule especially if AMA is allowing factories participate in the actual racing and have their own racing teams. Like Star Yamaha.

I really don’t think Star Yamaha would risk their reputation. Haiden rides the bike they give him. I don’t think he knows that much about motors to do anything illegal. The guy wanted to claim his bike, it’s the MSRP plus 50%. He backed out at the last minute. It’s a Star racing Yamaha, they made a bike just like they do for their national bikes. You can do anything to a motor you want as long as you don’t touch the piston! So basically they didn’t cheat in my eyes. We all know Haiden Deegan rips on a bike! If his bike was way way faster than any others he would of pulled the hole shot every moto! He did not pull the hole shot in every moto! Anyone can protest another rider, I know at Hangtown for the dodge national you gotta pay $300 and they can rip your bike apart. If something is illegal you get dq’d and the guy who protested gets his $300 back! If you are all legal you get the money and have to put your bike back together yourself! This is all allegations and I’m sure it didn’t go down exactly as you heard! But you never know! It’s amateur racing! Moto dads can get outta control when their kid gets beat by a faster rider! If you watch the Deegans RUclips video it’s even brought up. Like the 50 class was on the gate and someone said after this moto there will be 250 protests from outta control moto dads. And I believe that Deegan raced the 250B mod class. 250B limited is the stock class. So I don’t see any fouls in this! Star built a bad ass bike, KTM did too cause Dax Bennick was hauling ass as well and even beat Deegan in one moto! Schoolboy Deegan swept but Dax was right there keeping Haiden honest. Just my 02 cents. Dig your vlogs Cooksey 👍🏻👍🏻

The coaches weren't being jerks as much as they didn't hear the word "no" the first time. When they knocked on my door to the house to ask again, my Dad answered. I like Deegan a lot, but this issue actually makes me lose respect for Yamaha and Deegans some. I've been in Brennan's shoes before. I had a dude yell at me to get my bike off the track after I crashed and broke my ribs. I was in his way, I get it it. But I couldn't move that quickly without air in my lungs and broken ribs. First off, Haidens bike is not a "factory" bike. It's not like say Levi Kitchens bike, which is factory. Deegan bike is a mod 250. Nothing illegal about it. He is just that good. The kids grown up on motorcycles since he could stand practically. He did a back flip at 10 years old FFS! He just knows how to rife really well and Aldo he's just sixteen and relatively small framed and light.
I hate when a kid like Haiden works his ass off to be great and people get jealous because he smokes them with ease so they start this bullshit. Put in the work if you want to hang. Get on a great team, like Star Yamaha racing. They know how to get these kids correct. Come on man, Carmichael mom trained the GOAT, and she trains the kids at Star frequently.

They probably threw a fit because they have to deal with jealous haters all the time, just because they get smoked. Haiden is legit and so is star. They could have had proprietary mods on thoer that were perfectly legal but secret. Nothing days you have to share mechanic information with anyone. It's just a shitty way to try and harass someone just because they are better than you. Star does not give their amateur riders factory bikes for this very reason. Haidens 250 is weaker than say Levi's 250. Not the same at all. Haiden is just talented and fast, ran a sand tire if I'm not mistaken and just wins. Could be they didn’t want another team getting handed a setup that took them hours and hours to figure out on engine dyno’s. Teams have engine builders. It’s a mod class.
