    Hoss was my favorite character from Bonanza, great actor. This was prophetic. HIs last episode was Season 13 Episode 26, aired April 2 1972, He passed away in May 13, 1972, the show ended after the following 14th year. He really was the heart and soul of that show.
    HIs intelligence was often hidden underneath the loveable Hoss's surface, but it always came out in these interviews.
    He was a decorated combat veteran of the Korean war, serving as an infantry sergeant, Most people think or assume he died of a heart attack. He had gallbladder surgery, which I believe was deemed successful, went home but developed a blood clot in his lung, which caused his death. Very sad end to a wonderful life.

I only learned that Dan Blocker died at such a young age just recently. It's so sad because things in his life seemed to be going good and a year or so later he would die from complications from surgery. It goes to show you never know when you're last day will be.

He said each year on the anniversary of his dad's death (May 13) Michael Landon would travel alone to Dan's burial site at Woodmen Cemetery in DeKalb, Texas to leave flowers and say a prayer over Dan's grave. @MrJoeybabe25 3 года назад +4

      That's a joke right? China is not close to what we would like them to be, economically or constitutionally (freedoms we take for granted).
      But Nixon opened the door for that country to have options other than Mao or his even worse wife Jiang Qing. In 1971, at the time of this conversation with Dan Blocker, Communist China was in the midst of the "Cultural Revolution" which made the 1949 revolution look like a tea party.
      The Chinese were in a state of dire poverty of food, freedom, and to say the least politics, yet Chairman Mao fomented a people's revolution 1966-76 to take back power he felt he was losing his grip on. The Cultural Revolution tore the country apart as much or more than any of Mao's other machinations like
      "The Great Leap Forward" or "Let a hundred flowers bloom" campaigns to move his country into the 20th Century.
      All were failures which led to millions of deaths and imprisonments and emigration from a country that had become a cult.
      China is so much ahead of those bad old days that while we lament their dilatory move to liberty, they are at least in a position now to grab it if the population decides they've had enough.
      Back then, China was less than a third world country.
      What Nixon did was improve the state of a billion people.

    • @00060850
      @00060850 3 года назад +3

      Capitalism is creeping into China in a big way. There are now a number of multibillionaires in China, and a lot of millionaires due to capitalism. Don't confuse the government with what's happening at ground level.
      The Chinese people lack freedom, and too many are still very poor, but this does not mean capitalism isn't getting pretty strong there. In fact, Capitalism may be stronger in China than it is anywhere else in the world.
      Capitalism has nothing to do with the form of government a country has, and nothing at all to do with ninety percent of the things we label as freedoms, other than being able to buy, sell, run businesses, and keeping a decent part of the profit. China has one of the strongest economies in the world precisely because they have become capitalists. Communist capitalists, but still very strong capitalists.
      It seems many confuse capitalism with democracy, a Bill of Rights, etc. That is simply wrong.

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 3 года назад +3

      @@allysman You have no idea what capitalism even is, or which forms of government can be very strong capitalists. China is now a capitalist country, and its economy is one of the strongest in the world. They do not need to transform the government in any way except to be allowed to run businesses for profit. They did this twenty years ago.
      I have no clue why so many think communists can't also be capitalists? Capitalism has nothing to do with democracy, and with personal freedoms, other than the freedom to make a lot of money. China has multibillionaires and multimillionaires popping up all over the country. It also has many millions of people who aren't rich, but who now earn very good livings.
      Far too many are still dirt poor, but much of that is our fault. If everyone in China starts earning a decent living, we will no longer get billions of dollars of very cheap goods. We don't want that to happen. So don't blame China dfor everything. We do all we can to keep enough people in China poor to keep getting all those cheap things, and to keep our companies who have moved there operating at a big profit, all at the expense of the very poor.
      Anyway, China is a nasty, evil, extremely dangerous communist country, and capitalism has simply made them even more dangerous, and more evil.

It would be interesting to speculate where he would have ended up if he had lived. He had been a teacher, was interested in politics, & was a good actor. Would he have gone back to teaching? Hoss's mother was Swedish and named him Haas, that was the Swedish spelling for Hoss. It had nothing to do with the word "horse".

    I firmly believe Bonanza would have run to 1975 or later had Dan lived. His death was the death of the show.

    I was quite surprised when I learned that Dan played football at Tarleton State college in Stephenville Tx. I knew that he was a native Texan from the panhandle.

    I knew that Lorne Greene, Parnell Roberts, and Dan Blocker all wore toupees on Bonanza, but I had never seen Dan Blocker without his hairpiece. He is almost unrecognizable. But the voice is pure "Hoss"!

    He is the main character I loved to see on Bonanza. The Big guy who made it right. You're loved and from the town of ODonnell, Tx. and your birth place of DeKalb, Tx. RIP Hoss!

    It is very hard for me to see this big huge loveable intelligent man sit here before my eyes and talk about China as if they are our best friends. Dan smoked. He was a staunch Democrat from the old school. He served his country in Korea. He was a highly educated man. His opinions are of the times. I have to believe today, if he were alive and in his prime, his views on China would be vastly different. He fought the Communist in Korea mind you, but he was a fair minded man with pretty strong convictions.
    Bonanza, in my opinion, was, is and shall always be, the quintessential western TV show. Every time I see the opening sequence with Hoss, Adam, Little Joe and Ben, I cry because these men represented an amazing time in our countries history. Each is gone now and I pray they keep riding into that sunset in God's piece of the sky called
    "*THE PONDEROSA*"🐎🐎🐎🐎🙏

      No, he was right. We couldn’t ignore such a large population. The U.S. just made some bad deals along the way. If we had ignored them China would have made deals with the rest of the world and who knows what would have happened politically. It would most likely be a more aggressive China due to wanting more.

      The Chinese Communists unlike the Soviets were fortunate in their leadership. After Mao died younger leaders took over and acted with the flexibility that Lenin showed during the years he was in charge after the Revolution.

    Gosh this is the only interview I have seen of Mr Blocker he was such an incredible actor. I know he appeared on talk shows but there are none on You Tube. I grew up in the UK with Bonanza but only up to 1970 as I then left home to do my registered nurse training so did not see the last few seasons. Since we have been in total lockdown I have been catching up rewatching all the episodes again and it reminded me of very happy days of my youth. So whoever posted this thank you.
