That's some sick speed, accuracy and tone right there. I really like elaborate tutorials like this. I always played gallops while holding the pick normally, but it tired my forearm and my wrist quite quickly, so I'm trying to pick the way you suggested (which Schaffer seems to do as well). However I can't seem to bend my index finger to make the work position like you do. The last bone in the finger just can't bend that far. Can you think of anything I need to work at to achieve this kind of picking? I really, really love the IE type of gallops and I'd like to be able to do them better.
Allright this comment was like 1.5 years ago and I pretty much mastered this technique now and I have to say that you really shouldn't force any kind of specific movement with your fingers. I personally don't do the work/rest position thingy at all, I just use the "classic" grip, so with the pick resting on the side of my index finger. My fingers just can't do that other grip you suggested and still keeping a firm enough grip on the pick to really dig in hard. Still I can play at 220bpm and sound nearly identical to Jon. I shouldn't really want to be so unoriginal and unthinkingly copy him.... but I do.... haha Still, a very important thing seems to be that you just have to figure out what works best for your own hands and you can only find that out by practicing a lot. The only thing that's the same for everybody is that you should use only very minimal forearm movement. Use the wrist and fingers instead. Exactly how to do that is up to you to figure out for yourself. As you put more and more hours into practice you'll automatically start to use more wrist/finger motion and less arm motion when playing really fast. You can't force that. It will develop naturally after a few months of practice. I found super thick strings to be very useful. I use 13-62 in Eb. Tight as fuck. You don't need to do a lot of bending for this type of playing anyway, so it plays fine. Also triangle picks are very useful. Especially Clayton Acetals. Ask Jon :p.

really helpfull lesson man,although I believe you should insist more on the technique side,and show more time how you do it slowly.also what do you think of the opposite move,which is easier for people who hold the pick normally?by opposite i mean instead of playing down-down -bend fingers ,you play down with bend finger-extend finger-bend again finger?

Great video man, I've never seen this "work/rest" technique before. I've always used my wrist. Like most things on guitar, this seems harder to learn but makes it easier to play once you've got the hang of it. Will be giving this a go

Que onda bro! Pues sin duda los guitarristas tenemos todos tecnicas distintas para tocar los gallops, yo desarrollé esta manera de tocarlos por que en la forma como los tocaba anteriormente me cansaba rápido y habían canciones de Iced Earth y algunas de Meshuggah (Bleed en específico) que me cansaba rápido al tocarlas por que ponía demasiada tensión en el antebrazo al sosteneer la plumilla de cierta manera. Sin duda esta forma aplica para cualquier canción que los utilice, a mi me ha servido para tocar de todo, espero te sirva a ti también, te mando un saludo!

que tal Adrian, la les paul que utilicé en el video de always with me, no es mía, me la prestaron para probarla, es una custom black beauty, tiene pastillas seymour duncan, sh4 en el puente y sh2 en el brazo, ambas guitarras son de mahogany, asi que tiene un sonido grueso y obscuro, y ambas también tienen diapasón de ébano, que es brillante lo cual equilibra bien el sonido sin embargo, honestamente me gusta más la warbeast, el sonido es más agresivo que la les paul aunque menos cálido. \m/
aaaaaaahhh maldicion yo hago todo con la muñeca y me cuesta un huevo solo hacerlo con los dedos, buen video !! oye ¿no podrias poner unos ejercicios un poco mas lentos y faciles? para poder ir absorbiendo la tecnica que utilizas con los dedos
