I like the way he relishes his fine wine ,infact I think he relished and appreciated all the fine things he aquired during his illustrious career , nothing lost on him ,he came from nothing and built his empire, Also his mind was really articulate and he wasted no time learning languages, and social etiquette Bravo Maestro Bravo.

I think this may be the best interview he ever gave. I remember thinking at the time, "why does this man hide how gentle and pleasant and cheerful he is?" He had, of course, this ridiculous reputation for being "difficult." The other one is the famous Cavett interview during which he topped the comedy writer for humor and repartee at every turn. He was brilliant, talented, charming, and generous, a very great man and of course a dancer non pareil. I only wish, so much, that he had been more careful so that the ballet, his art that he so loved, had not lost all his knowledge and experience so soon.

+Lin Hiril - Yes, where is the Cavett interview???? I've seen photos of it but can't find it on YT nor as a video to buy. Cavett has several DVDs of guests, but Rudik is not on any of them. There is also a list of guests over the years on Wikipedia, but Nureyev is not listed there either. Perhaps because he out shown Cavett, he's been left off. I have one more source to check. If I find anything I'll let you know.

lochXnessie I missed the first one not being a late night person. I was heart broken, so I wrote Cavett a letter proposing and explaining why he should do another. It must have worked because, on the day the interview (90minutes) was to show, I got a call. “This is ABC.” In town there was a business ABC Rental. So I asked, “ABC what?” Answer: “ABC TV in New York.” Me (confused and curious): “Oh. Why are you calling ME?” “Mr. Cavett asked me to call you to tell you that he is interviewing Mr. Nureyev tonight, and he wanted to make sure you didn’t miss it.” Well, needless to say I was astonished. I think maybe I was in my early 20s. No vhs in those days, so I recorded it on cassette tape. I loved this man. Truth be told, I still do.

It's fucking great to see Rudi in the classroom. Because in the world of dance, no matter how far along you are or what level you're at.
Whether you are a principal prima ballerina star or a student taking pre-classes at some school on Saturday morning, everyone takes class.

Letty * What he said about his family was that only politicians could have brought them over, but they had no will to do so. He was deeply sad about that. Also he adored Margot Fonteyn; she was his family, he would have followed her to the ends of the earth, as he said, she was everything to him. He paid all her medical bills at the end of her life. But he could not have her so threw himself into a promiscuous life/ The world of ballet, theater come to that, is a very promiscuous environment. But he had asked her to marry him; she refused. He knows what it’s like to be number two. Growing up where he did he would know how to hide feelings. Being an incomparable artistic talent, also how to express them. In Romeo and Juliet with Fonteyn, we see his true heart:’We were joined together body and soul’.
