I installed 2 of these exact kits on my B&S 5550/8550 gens, my first was after watching this video and after searching Craigslist for another generator to upgrade I found the exact model of my own for sale, same issue, carb didnt work. Fortunately for the tri fuel kit you don't need the carb to work in propane or natural gas. Just leave the choke open and it will fire right up. I opened my carb and same as you, the float was stuck. Easy fix and now I have 2 standby gens ready to go :)
Two standbys are better than one! I actually picked up a second geni that wouldn't run. I replaced the carb and it's good to go. It I should install the kit on that one too.
Only used my generator a few times in west Texas during last blk out but on propane it was great under light load of freezer, ice box and heater fan Plus a few lights
Great info, I have had the Storm Responder for 10 years now. Used it for about 5-8 hours a day for over a week when Sandy hit us in NJ. I haven't had the carb issue yet but I am going to have a closer look at the hose connections due to your discovery. Thanks for the video.
That hose is just press fit into the two ends. I think its a crankcase vent or something. I just bought a short length of fuel line with the correct outer diameter and replaced it. I had to get it a little longer than factory because of the spacer that is part of this kit.
Thanks for video, glad you pointed out your mistake as I would've been the one to do the same thing. For the gas fittings I would go with either 1 or 2 sets of quick disconnect depending on if you want to coil the NG line up and hang it on the generator or hang it in the garage somewhere. Thanks again!
Quick disconnects are a great idea. I havent really messed with it much anymore because hurricane season is over, and we are in process of building a new house, so we will be moving in about 6 months. I really should test it, in case we have another "great freeze" like last year.
great vid, thanks. FYI- if it wasn't necessary the mfg wouldn't waste money adding plastic trim to the unit. the plastic trim pieces often are needed to direct air flow towards or away from the unit to promote cooling. they can be very important. trimming and replacing the piece like you did in the video is a smart move, instead of just discarding the trim entirely.
Great video. made it look as simple as it is. Because of the confusing detractions I purchased another kit for more money and it didn't have half the stuff century kit came with. And after installing the kit I purchased the tube or snorkel that goes in behind the choke prevents it starting on gasoline.
Wonderful. Just bought the kit for a generac 3300; looks like there’s some differences. A video showing you dialing it in with natural gas would be awesome.
I actually have not had to use it yet. We have been very fortunate. This years hurricane season was uneventful, and we did not have a big freeze even like last year.
Should you have to use the yellow tape instead of the white? Yellow tape is for propane and natural gas use. Not trying to be to negative just a friendly suggestion.
@7:11 Does this spacer have a venturi effect shape for the inlet? Or just a pipe feed? If so, how can it increase vacuum to propane line, relative to airflow? Cause the purpose of that big bellow valve is just that: to open up more as the vacuum is increased.
Big respect for guys that prepare for the worst to help their family for when bad things come from the land, air and sea. Too bad our government send all of those things to us and and is doing all they can to take our tools of protection and survival from us. The Biden camp to be specific.
Blake I Enjoyed the video. I have the same generator so this was telling perfect video for me. FYI: the Teflon tape you used for the install is not for gas. The correct Teflon tape should be yellow in color. Just wanted to point that out. Thanks
Umm you need to Look at the yellow tape or pipe dope that’s rated for gas Teflon tape I don’t think will hold up well to gas please test often if you don’t change however I really think you should change to the specific type so nothing bad will happen
The guy I spoke with when gathering supplies seemed to think it was just a difference in thickness. He stated that for the longest time, there was only white, and it worked then. Ill have to look into it.Thanks!
Hey mate, I live in Houston too, i also have a briggs and stratton 6000 watt generator, I am thinking about converting mines. Can you do a video update about how many hrs you get out of a 20-lbs or 100-lbs propane tank at 50% load. Thanks in advance.
Hey Blake, great video! We were in the path of Hurricane Ida - like nothing I've ever experienced. I'm curious... Do you know if this kit will work on a Troy Bilt 5550 Model# 01919-1? It also has a Briggs & Stratton engine. Just wondering if maybe there was some documentation with your kit that specifies what models it supports...
I don't think the Instructions have a list, but the link I posted in the description goes to the manufactures website. This page lets you search for your generator, and find the kit that works for it. That being said, I googled Troybilt 5550 and it looks like it has the same engine as mine. So I think it should. The kit seemed to be pretty universal though, and I had some parts that I didn't use for my setup.
My invoice shows Briggs and Stratton 277255 Tri-Fuel Kit Briggs-and-Stratton-277255-TF, but it seems to be pretty universal. ( i had a few spare parts lol)
I have the exact same generator and the carb is clogged up from the gas I had in it, even with stabilizer. I want to convert to natural gas as well. Do I need to clean the carb out as well or replace it with a new one when I put the natural gas kit on, or is the existing carb no longer used to regulate anything?
The NG injection plate goes behind the carb. In NG it's just an air intake. Carbs are cheap tho and you have to remove it to install the kit, so might as well replace it.
You can not depend upon natural gas folks, if to many people (15) try to run there generator on it pressure will be too low to run any of them, this has happened many times before Stick with gasoline or propane, yes you will lose power on LPG and burn more of it Having a tank on trailer is best way with propane 😊😊😊
I don't know if this is regional, but our nat gas supply is pretty solid. Many houses have whole home genies on nat gas with no issues. I have never heard anyone have a feed problem.
Never, EVER, EVER, EEEEEVER USE REGULAR Thread tape on LP/GASEOUS RELATED fittings!! DANGEROUS and completely illegitimate for safety! ALWAYS use gaseous specific yellow tape. This company is going to get sued off their asses for this!

Wow great video Sir… Thank you for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’ve had great luck with the Hipi carb on every thing so far
All the mowers, blowers, riding mowers tractors on my channel I use the HiPa carbs. They are solid and cheap
Thanks just what I have been looking for I have the same generator.

That's was. An excellent video thankyou easy to understand
Glad it was helpful!
Thank You for information and advice
Always welcome
Thank you Blake best video I have seen for this generator! . I have the same generator and will be doing this also! Born and raised on the westbank !!
You are welcome! Others have commented that you should use yellow teflon tape, so FYI.

Yeah, I think there's a recess that creates a venturi effect. Might be the trick to the whole process.
It has a little bit of a cone shape.

Unfortunately I don't really have a way to do that. I doubt my neighbors would take to kindly to a geny running for hours for no reason. Lol

The generator output is reduced, running on natural gas and propane, versus gasoline..
can you tell me how many NG BTU's the unit now needs to run
Did you do a video on the start up with NG?
Unfortunately I have not. Fortunately I haven't needed the geni.

I can't find the followup video to this one. You were gonna show us the whole rig operating.
Yeah, that would be nice. I just got off the phone with center point and they couldn't tell me my gas pressure. Told me to call a plumber
@@JuanGutierrez-hs6dg you don't need a plumber, you need a pressure gauge from eBay.
Help please! I have this same generator and cannot find the model # for the brigs and Stratton motor. Do you recall the model number?

You used the wrong teflon tape for gas and you applied it in the wrong direction on the regulator.
Yea, i know. I used the wrong tape. I will fix it eventually.
Will you get the same run time on propane as with gasoline?
Gas has more power but propane works great
Time depends on load
Needs a hotter plug on ng
That's the wrong Teflon tape to use for gas line applications. It will break down and leak if exposed to gas.
Yellow tape best
Nice man, where in Houston is that at?
I'm south of Houston. Clear lake area.

Your gonna loose 2k watt's on that generator its really to small of a generator for propane and ng ,sta with gasoline for maximum wattage on that gen
