- Alligator Gar -The Living Fossil
Alligator Gar is a pre-historic fish that looks like an alligator with fins. The Gar's body is heavily armored with scales. Some native Americans used to make arrowheads from the scales and head of the Alligator Gar.
The largest Alligator Gar ever caught weighed 350 pounds. It was captured in Mississippi. It is the largest of the seven known Gar species and can grow to be 10 feet long. This makes it the largest freshwater fish in North America.
They once lived alongside the dinosaurs. The evolution of gars as a group date back to 100 million years. Modern Gars still retain many ancient characteristics, including the ability to breathe in both air and water. Alligator Gar can live up to 100 years and keep growing in size throughout their life.
This fish is one of the top predators in its natural environment. They can feed upon fish, turtles, birds and small mammals. Though Alligator Gar have a fierce look, they pose no threat to humans.
Alligator Gars are also quite popular in Aquarium Trade.
