Husbands, the 1970 independent film by John Cassavetes starring the director, along with Peter Falk (Columbo) and Ben Gazzara is the first on my Dad After Dark list for anyone looking for a truly unique, independent film experience. It's a bold, unflinching look at the men of a certain time and place in American society, their macho pretensions, their midlife crises and, as always with Cassavetes, their struggle with identity and notions of love. See why the Independent Spirit Awards most beloved prize is The John Cassavetes Award. With the emergence of modern digital cinema cameras and an immediate access to audiences on RUclips, Cassavetes remains a major inspiration for up and coming directors for whom he blazed a trail. Starting with only his 16mm film experiments and an independent vision, he gave birth to the modern independent movement.
The indpendent films of John Cassavetes:
    Shadows (1958)
    Faces (1968)
    Minnie and Moskowitz (1971)
A Woman Under the Influence (1974)
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976)
    Opening Night (1977)
    Gloria (1980)
    Love Streams (1984)

I'm a 40-year-old female filmmaker, and watching "Husbands" sparked a longing for friendships as raw and authentic as those portrayed on screen. John Cassavetes is truly unmatched-a master of the visceral and the real!✨
It's astonishing that John Cassavetes and Gene Rowland aren’t part of the curriculum at some of the top film schools.

Hello. I'm a filmmaker who looks up to John Cassavetes as an inspiration and spiritual mentor in my own work. Your review resonated deeply with me. It's one of the more honest, mature, insightful and compassionate reviews of the film.
When I first saw his films, like you, I was more focused on the groundbreaking filmmaking aspects and the surface rawness. The older I get, the more I see how much wisdom, insight and questions about life at different stages that John put into the films. Every time I return to the films, I always come away with new insight about life or a more nuanced understanding of an older insight.
In my 20s I thought Husband was ridiculous and exaggerated. I'm now in my 40s, the same age as the men in the film. After a good friend of mine passed away several years ago, I revisited the film and saw how wrong I was about the film and their behavior. I didn't jet off to London, but after my own friend died, I understood better Gus, Archie and Harry's feelings of pain, grief, desperation, violence, and wanting to escape and not face their painful realities. John's work is always tough and compassionate but neither sugarcoats nor enables questionable behavior.
Husbands is quite painful, terrifying, funny, and also deeply hopeful.
    Thank you for your review.

Thank you for taking the time to leave that very thoughtful comment. I feel the same way about him, and his work continues to have an impact on my life into my 50's. It can be difficult to get people to watch the films all the way through, for some of the reasons you mentioned, so it's gratifying to get a comment like yours. I just picked up "Accidental Genius" by Marshall Fine, and so far it's been a useful addition to my little Cassavetes collection. I thought I'd read everything on him, but the book does fill in some of the gaps, if you're interested. I just checked out your channel very briefly, btw, but I will circle back later when I'm home and can focus. It looks very inspiring already. Cheers to you, and thanks again.

@@DaddyDaughterMovieNight Thank you for recommendation. I have a copy of that book as well as the books by Tom Charity and Ray Carney.
Thank you for visiting my filmmaking channel. I can also email you copies of some screenplay drafts of Cassavetes if you don't have copies of them yet.
I come from the Philippines. A friend introduced me to Cassavetes (through Carney's website writing) in 2000.
One of the oddest connections to Cassavetes in this part of the world, (he's not so well known in my country) was several years back, a friend purchased an autographed copy of the Minnie and Moskowitz screenplay (published in book form) in a used book store in a provincial capital city several hundred kilometers south of the national capital Metro Manila. I wonder how a copy of that book ended up there ...

Thank you, yes. I'm using the Canon C70, and always trying different lighting, lenses, codecs, etc, to play with the look.
