    I'm sad to say that my dad, Patrick, passed away on Sunday night (2/18/18). I told him about all of the comments on here and he got a kick out of it that so many people watched the show. He is at peace and pain free now after battling liver cancer for the past year. He was cracking jokes to the very end and had a great last day surrounded by family.

      Chante Dennis I believe you, that you tried to help him. My sister hoards and can only accept help from people removed fm her situation. If you had no care for your father you wouldn't be on the show, you wouldn't be on this thread, and you wouldn't approach him with unconditional love despite what it's like to offer a hoarder love, support and help. I am sorry for your loss.

    All these comments coming at the daughter when she has expressed numerous times that she tried in the show and in the comments and the male cleaner himself even stated that it’s much easier for someone to see the view point of an outsider or stranger than to listen to the people who are closest to you. The daughter could tell her father numerous times to clean something or she could take action herself but the father is a grown man, he ultimately is going to do whatever he pleases.
    The daughter did all she could to help. She stressed, she missed time with her growing family, she begged, she pleaded. That’s all she could do.
    Before you know someone’s situation you shouldn’t put the blame on someone who is innocent and tried her best to help.

    • @roseywinter
      @roseywinter 3 года назад +3

      Yeah, it's really sad and messed up. Honestly, first and foremost it's always going to be the person themselves' responsibility to take care of themselves, period. If friends and family, or even strangers, help, that is wonderful and amazing. Especially if help is truly needed. But the reality is, BLAMING a person's issues and problems on the people around them or shifting responsibility is just wrong and rude. Even if her daughter didn't go through all the lengths to help, she still wouldn't be at fault. A grown adult is responsible for themselves. It's always nice to receive help, but no way should we blame others.

      This is so true. My mom is a hoarder, not sure how bad because she won't let anyone in the house, but I assume its bad. I have begged and pleaded and cried and offered to help in any way she will allow. Everyone in our family has tried because it breaks our heart for our mom to live like that, but she refuses. It kills us, but there is nothing we can do.

    I think what people are missing is that this man lost his wife and the wife was a hoarder. He was mourning, everyone mourns differently so no one can really judge him for how he processed it. The objects probably kept him close to his wife up until he realized it was excessive and he was done mourning. Just goes to show there are alot of people who don't understand the grieving process and are pretty cold. I don't believe the whole of Texas generally looks like this, this is one mans story, be nice.

      I actually can tolerate when people have issues throwing things because it is always a psychological thing. People are sick and to be honest, the TV show should always bring a psychologist with them for the tensioned moments. I do though have issues with people who live in dirt. That is dangerous for everyone entering the house and the neighbours.

      Patrick is helping them so much, by being willing to let go of stuff. Every other hoarder show I've seen, which is dozens and dozens, the hoarders obstruct the process and sometimes slow it down to a standstill. Some are downright hateful, but Patrick's sweet and funny. When I lost my love, I got depressed out of my mind, but never let myself or my house go. Men aren't usually as tidy as women to begin with.

      This is was I mean, instead of hiding the kids away from the house because its too dangerous or gross, why not help him clean up since he is clearly too old to do it on his own.

    • @martinl19
      @martinl19 6 лет назад +36

      He probably didn´t want any help at first, cause he was not ready to let go of all the stuff his wife used to buy. Or his children (family) were not willing to spend a few weeks cleaning up all that mess. But it did surprised me a great deal that for the first time I see someone on this show more than willing to throw away so much junk. I get the feeling his wife was the real hoarder.. not him so much. And a real hoarder can influence the whole family in a terrible way.

    • @anastasia10017
      @anastasia10017 6 лет назад +32

      Hoarders are very difficult people. you cant reason with them. they dont want to get rid of their stuff. what you think of as junk they think of great value. if you throw their stuff out, they go and get it back out of the garbage. This old man's wife was a hoarder and he had to give up the fight. Now that she is dead, the old man is willing to have the place cleaned up and wants the cleaners to stay. if his wife was still alive, she would be fighting the cleaners.

    It must be such a hard thing for his daughter to see her dad deal with grief in such a destructive way. I'm glad he is getting his life back and I can only assume now that he started the process he will keep going and let his family help. This was my favorite episode of the series, and by far the nicest person they helped.

    Life happens and for different reasons we have this need to hold onto things. Luckily I am the opposite. I have learned to let go and have actually cleaned up everything, including getting rid of all old papers, photos cleaned out and when my time comes, there will be a minimum amount to deal with. After so many deaths in my family, I want my passing to be easy. In the meantime, I plan on living another 20 years. I liked this character. Made me smile. Thanks for that. From Newfoundland, Canada

    Hello All! This is Chante, Patrick's daughter. I've had a lot of emotions reading your comments. Here are some things I want to share with you all. My mom was the hoarder. My father refused to ever clean. I am the reason he got on the show. After my mom died, I spent days at the house, cleaning and throwing stuff away. I took photos and sent them to the American Hoarders show but the UK version contacted me instead. What you are seeing is already after I cleaned and threw away a ton of stuff...there was still all of this stuff left. My father DOES NOT CLEAN. He did not even clean after the show cleaned for him. Nor would he let me get rid of things he was attached to...dirty, dusty, broken I was out there every day of the shoot cleaning. He leaves dishes, rags, bandaids and other random stuff a normal person would put in the trash, where ever he drops it. I did see my parents frequently in the last 16 years. They would come and visit me and my family, or we would meet up at a hotel for a vacation weekend. I was there and present with my family as much as they would allow me to be. However my family was not allowed at their house. In addition to the animal feces and other random garbage, their house was not safe for small children and my mother was too embarrassed for my husband to see how she lived. You couldn't hardly breathe in the house much less walk safely. My mom was a very loving and giving person, she was deeply depressed and bought things to fill the emptiness. I know this paints my father as a sweet old man but he was not nice to my mom. He loved her but he was not nice. This entire show doesn't even show my alcoholic brother and the fact that he has contributed tearing up their house and diverting energy and funds away from any remodeling to pay for his mistakes. Shortly after this was filmed, my father was diagnosed with Stage 4 liver cancer. He's been battling the cancer for the last year and has finally stopped taking his chemo pills. I've been there every step of the way. He finally consented to letting me remodel his house in early January 2018(I've been begging my parents to let me help them since 2000 but they refused, sometimes even violently) so please don't view this show as a daughter not willing to help. I was not ALLOWED to help. I frequently abandon my own family to go and help my father. He lives 3 hours away. when I go in his house, it kicks up my dust induced asthma and I work as much as I can. The bathroom and kitchen were completely gutted and redone. All of the flooring in the main part of the house has been replaced but the animal urine stench still lingers. I'm not sure how many of you will read this, but I just wanted to let you know that his daughter did help as much as she could and as much as he would let her. Next week my father will hopefully be allowed by hospice to die in his own home that I have redone for him. It has been a dream of mine to redo my parents house and clean it and I finally have been granted the opportunity. PS: The brother in law is very hard to get along with but means well and he is actually married to my father's sister. So he was in no relation to my mother.

      I'm so sorry for your loss. Don't take the youtube comments personally, people respond off-the-cuff half the time and don't think twice about who might be reading them. I'm glad you were able to remodel and bring some happiness to your father's life while he was here. You were a good daughter. You did the right thing by being on the show and are inspiration for all of us who suffer from similar problems.

      Thanks for taking the time to explain the larger picture, even though you don't owe anyone anything. Social media comment sections are brutal, based on a small peek into someone's life, and you should never let it affect your self worth. Blessings x

      Chante, it is true that humans can make assumptions when we don’t have all the information. So sorry that people pick on folks that are doing the best they can under tough conditions. Also dealing with adults much less parents is HARD. My own mother would get a little testy when I would tell her my opinion. Her question often was “who is the mother here?” So you keeping dealing with your daddy with my blessings. I hope he is doing all right.

    I do NOT like Patrick's low-life brother-in-law - NOT one little bit. I do wish Patrick well in keeping up with the chores around his home. Texas has programs that pay for the elderly to have household help. If it gets to the point where he requires such assistance, I hope that he will apply for it.

    I feel like this man was so easy to work with because he wasn't a hoarder, his wife was. Once his wife passed away he just couldn't get himself to clean up especially since all the stuff was things his wife bought. He just needed help to do it. If he was a real hoarder he would have put up a huge fight to keep the things but nope he said "throw it out" to everything. Im so happy for him he seems like a real sweet person

    *LOL* Crocs are Australia, love. We have 'gators. This show is cruel- hoarder and filthy house are hard enough for people who are not OCD. I feel bad for the OCD cleaners. UGH. Bless them, they're really pushing themselves. Brave to try the MREs, though- the prepper food; that's not known for tasting /good/, just sustaining life.

      Don’t think it is cruel. Exposure therapy shows the ones with OCD they don’t have to be sterile to survive. And the person with the filthy house is helped. You are almost right about the crocs. We have mostly alligators in the southern US, but there are some crocs on the coast of southern Florida. Oh, and crocs are in Africa and Asia, as well.
