When done diy the rocketeer swap is comparable to the K24 swap in cost. One of the main reasons why the turnkey option costs so much is because it includes a fully rebuilt engine and labor costs too of course.
hell yeah! i never thought anything of these engines, I was full rotary, but i got a rallycross project car and im amazed how fun these engines are... forged and balanced internals, 7800rpm limiter (K8), spitting flames on a stock engine!
To say that the 13Bs are misunderstood would be an understatement. They can be reliable if you know how to build and take care of them. I've had them for decades. A rotary Miata would likely be the best balanced too, so long as you're able to mount the engine low and super close to the firewall as most of its weight are in the 3 iron plates. Add an appropriately sized single turbo to something like a properly kitted 13B-REW and you've got a pretty monstrously fast machine that is also super nimble and fun to drive.
Better yet, perhaps a MSP REN Hybrid and keep it NA? You could possibly push more power from that than the stock REW since the REN had far higher compression and lighter rotors. Hybrid to ditch those tiny side exhaust ports, and the NA rotaries tend to be a little more reliable, least from what I know. Though Rx8s are cheap, so even a base MSP would be good. 240 ish HP is perfect for a Miata. Though then you're dealing with the MSP REN lol.
@XenoKyomi things have changed with moden ECUs and tuning knowledge. Mostly rotaries are sensitive to detonation. So a more conservative approach to ignition timing improves reliability. Not a lot of power to be had in advancing further anyway. People are finding ways to reliably boost higher compression rotors too. Boosted renesis even. Though you can get more from a properly built REW.
im no dorito fans but the sad part is that most sporty rotary's were owned by people that didnt care about maintenance and mazda saw it and was like''hey, lets make the parts pirce go up so we can make money'' and boom, people now think they're unreliable
Hybrid Renesis+REW so it has ALL THE PORTS. Side AND peripheral exhaust ports, a nice street intake port on each side housing, and then add a semi-peripheral intake port and time it to act like Vtec. If you do it right, that should get you to roughly 300hp/200tq N/A.

I've had the thought of putting a Buick-Rover 3.5 liter V8 into a Miata. I like the simplicity of a pushrod V8 combined with the lighter weight of the aluminum engine. More power with less weight penalty, plus the added fun of being able to fit the older tech that I understand better because I'm old and weird.
The Rover V8 is not a great option these days, they aren't cheap anymore, and most used engines will be knackered and/or have dropped liners. Even when they do work they don't make a lot of power.
Most people that knock these rover engines think about a to b drag racing! However the miata has ALWAYS been about the twisty bits and unfortunately a 4 cylinder just doesn't have the pull most people like in mid corner, I agree with you on this engine, drag out a range rover 4.6 trow a carby manifold on it and it will be fun fun fun
*Dream* swap? Well an all wheel drive 8 injector race tuned Cosworth Sierra swap sounds fun. A six speed RWD Ford (Yamaha) 3.0 SHO swap would be fun but the K-swap is 1/5 the cost and much more sensible overall. I'm glad you gave realistic yet optomistic prices for these swaps. As a master mechanic I could easily beat any of those prices with contacts and wholesale sourcing, but would charge quite a bit more for a walk in customer. That said, I can't afford either of my *dream swaps* lol.

While the SR20 swap is unique, for the cost/hassle/power ratio I think you're better off just going turbo on the BP. You can find a VVT engine for cheap and build it out of the car and swap it while maintaining many factory parts, making it a much easier and more straight forward swap without fabricating stuff.
Fun video. Loved the smoothness of the 1UZFE V8 in my '98 Lexus LS400. I think that would be a very cool swap. Gonna stick with the 1.6 and turbo it in my '91, but maybe another one down the road.
I've wanted to drop a V6 from a late model mustang into my NA. Lots of horsepower and you should be able to keep most of the weight behind the front wheels. I've watched the videos on the Jag V6 swap and that looks pretty interesting, too.

You need a sense of history. One of the first Miata engine swaps ever was the Monster Miata. It was out of the Mustang, 5 liter. Smaller and lighter than the LS, and fit without major cutting. LS being of a newer design and found in trucks eventually displaced the Ford 5L. But it was the first of the many swaps, other than the 13b.
I own one, I like it, but an LS would be better in almost every department other than character imo. That said I’m in no rush to get rid of my monster Miata
Dream build if money was no issue: 1UZ bottom end with 2UZ heads ported and flowed. Bored out to the max with lightweight internals and ITB'S, running on e85. Custom headers. Custom flywheel and adapter, fully sequential with helical cut gears. Aluminium propshaft, RX7 LSD and custom side shafts. V8 Miata control arms with Ohlins coilovers. Reinforced sills, butterfly brace, harddog roll bar. Custom molded widebody, center lock hub conversion, 17x12 rear 17x10 front 2 piece billet wheels. Brembo brakes sourced from Porsche parts. Full leather interior, Lotus Evora seats. Upgraded AC from a truck, dual batteries in the boot with a AA wireless head unit and booming sound system.
The Ls swapped Miata can be a good bit less than 20k if you play your cards right. Like getting the monster Miata swap kit and using a Holley terminator for the computer but we’re it gets real expensive is the drive train because stock Miata stuff won’t hold up but if you get a good price t56 and Ford 8.8 rear end you can do it for around 13k.
It certainly can be done cheaper, that kit appears to be quite DIY oriented though. That’s the way I’d do it myself, but most people would pay extra for a more bolt in kit. That said, theres only so much about LS / big V8 swaps that are direct bolt ins with the extensive list of modifications. Have you built one?
@@CashedOutCars no but I aspire to one day. But there is one mad man on club roadster fully hand building one absolute mad lad. Also Taylor ray has a very extensive ls swap on his Miata with the monster Miata swap kit. Also thanks for the great content
I was looking for this comment. I would use the b204 cause the Miata is small and light and with the shorter stroke you can rev it to 9000rpm all day, but for more low to mid torque in a heavier car I'd use the b234. Just know they dont want to/won't rev past 7,400 rpm safely, at least not for long. I would use a b204 with a b205/b235 head with 268 cams myself cause those heads flow much better, so a b204/205 hybrid. It's probably best to install knock sensors and coil packs instead of the D.I.C. so you can run a stand alone E.C.U. Alot of Saab guys say the D.I.C. holds these engines back but for me it's just cause they're expensive and they don't make them well anymore. Old junkyard D.I.C.'s last longer than the new ones they're making in my experience.
A **GREAT** engine for the early Miata: 4.6L Rover (buick) V8. It makes good power and is incredibly lightweight and compact. They also like an M90 blower. While not nearly as capable as the LS, it is smaller and lighter. Highly recommended.
I think a good swap would be a 3800 series 2, you can buy them cheap, and you can buy the already supercharged, they are impossible to kill, and if you get the supercharged one, all you gotta do is pully swap, cam, and injector swap, + a tune, you’ll be running like 350 hp and 9s (if your tires stick)
Hi there please tell me what shocks, coils do I swap out my stock shocks I like the Ollie's but I don't want to spend over 7 hundred,I have an all original 2000 miata mint mint condition only 133klm on it I only drive on the street what's the weight I should go with for the shock coil overs front. N rear please help thank you 😊
Put a supercharger on the car and you'll be fine and costs less. The engine in the Miata is more then fine and it's highly reliable. If you think these cars are all about power then sell it because your missing the point.
Sure, that's plenty fun! But you still won't have much low end torque, or the other characteristics of these other engines. They're not all about power, but once you drive a faster Miata, it's a game changer!
Having owned both supercharged 1.8L 4-cyl and 5.0L V8 Miatas, this is actually very good advice. For my tastes, 175 to 200 wheel HP feels like enough for a daily driver Miata. The rumble from a big engine sounds cool and all, but so does the intake wail of a positive displacement supercharger.
I heard people mentioning the Jaguar V6, which I heard is an excellent swap. You’d be surprised to know that hot rodders in England are now putting Mercedes, BMW and Jaguar engines in their Ford Pops, Cortinas, Chevy pick ups and Deuces. Especially since the Rover V8 has gone to the scrapyard of history. Talking about the Mazda swaps, you forgot to mention the Villiers V10.
The 150 lb number is the one I see quoted from several sources. I'm building a LS7 2001 so we will see. You left out the LSF V6 and Ford V8, good options as well.
I’d love to swap an LFX. Buying a 90 Miata today and thinking about LFX or K-swap In the future. I think that swap would make for some great content, don’t you? Great videos btw. Considering making a build channel as well and understanding how many challenges it takes just to get in front of a camera. Lol

Miata is light car so it needs a light power train. K20A comes to my mind first. 230bhp with some small tweaks easily upto 300+ if you go really crazy with it still being NA. Or you go with Busa if you’re here for the time attack monster.
Surprised the 2.5l Duratec 4 cyl and 3.0l Duratec V6 engine swaps are not in here. Kits available and especially with the 2.5 simple swap with good NA and crazy boosted HP available.

My dream engine swap for an MX5 is a Mercedes Benz AMG M139S. Small but powerful 2 liter turbo engine. Feels like a Miata at the core and it will take off like a rocket.
Toyota's 3.5 litter v6. You can get 300 NA hp stock if you are lucky and they are super-efficient with aftermarket cams and other stuff. And they are in a bunch of Camrys and Highlanders. I would do it on a NB miata
Great content, but in my opinion, for most people these swaps are pretty expensive $$$. Depending on what someone would use a swap for (performance, reliability, drifting/motorsports) it can go a lot of ways. For "cheap" and reliable 200-ish HP numbers you'll be looking at almost exclusively 4 cylinder engines. Engines such as VW 2.0 TDI, Mazda MZR, Mitsubishi 4B11T, Ford Ecoboost engine are just some of the other options.
Low end torque can be a problem with turbo'ed engines. I have an LFX/6L50 matched to a 3.23 rear end in an NC PRHT. Over 300 hp at the wheel and 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. The aluminum LFX only adds about 50 lbs over stock. A gateway and 3rd party BCM gives a fully functional dash, PS, PB, ABS, AC and Cruise Control. Minor mods to subframes. Only body mod was added with a ball-peen hammer for clearance of the high pressure fuel pump. All this and suburban gas mileage at 27.5 MPG.
13B is nice but the best swap is to start with an RX-8 , it's just a lengthened MX-5 anyway... one donor car and you're done... and 90% of "bad" genesis rotaries just need new seals between the sections.
I sold my k24 swapped rsx. Exhaust / headers / intake / tune. Running 93 was making 225hp 186tq. ( edit: i had a k24a2 from an 08 tsx WITH the 6 speed ) In a 2600lb car it was fast. I beat a 392 scat by pure luck. In a miata ( which i now own a 97 montego bay blue ) it would rip. I promise 225 from a 24 would rip. put the timing up on the vtec ( close to 50 deg ). Kick it in at 4.2k and I promise a vette wouldnt beat that miata

That certainly is a sweet swap! The turnkey option looks to be over 20k USD though, I'm looking into the swap kits!

GM 3800 supercharged V6 from the 90s Buick Regal.
Thank you for this video, its perfectly explained.
26b miata, i might actually manage to build it in the next few years
Miata + 13B = Perfection.
I want to swap a Saab B204/B234, a few people in europe have done it and make over 400/500
I was looking for this comment.
This best swap I saw was a Isuzu 4 cly turbo diesel in Thailand, that little NB was crazy fast at 1320.
A **GREAT** engine for the early Miata: 4.6L Rover (buick) V8. It makes good power and is incredibly lightweight and compact. They also like an M90 blower. While not nearly as capable as the LS, it is smaller and lighter.
Highly recommended.
Dream swap: GM 3800 Supercharged (L67) V6
i have wanted to throw a volvo T-5R (turbo inline 5) in a miata it makes 309hp out of a 5 speed manual no clue if it would fit though
That’d certainly be sweet!
Look at the four cylinder version.
Yea I got a buddy with a v6 firebird. The gm 3800 series 2 is amazing and cheap. Just gotta figure out how to put it in
I heard that Oz Engineering makes the Honda J series swap. Can't wait to get my hands on a kit!
N rear please help thank you 😊
I’m really pining on doing a Volvo 5cyl swap in something like an NB in the future, a true baby viper
either a street port renisis 13b or a REW 13b swap. rew could be stock since it makes so much power
I own a 2004 Miata and a 1995 Porsche 911, Happy with stock motors.
@@CashedOutCars unless you track it then all that power goes to waste as do a 8,000 RPM redline.
The engine is worth 10X what the car is worth . . . ??
Should it be realistic a swap from a cupra leon 2021 to a 2018 Mazda Miata? 🤔
I’d love to swap an LFX. Buying a 90 Miata today and thinking about LFX or K-swap In the future. I think that swap would make for some great content, don’t you?
Great videos btw. Considering making a build channel as well and understanding how many challenges it takes just to get in front of a camera. Lol
Great video, very informative. I'd try a 4g63T swap if I was to perform one :)
Great video 👏
LS engine ftw got a Aluminum 5.3L ready for a miata swap with a GS6-53BZ 6speed transmission with PMC adapter kit, Cadillac SVX differential. Got also a turbo i would like to rear mount the turbo. Also have a Holly Terminator X
That'll be a beast, enjoy!
No Question, the only Swap that fits the NA is a Rotary imo... BUT a V8 NB is also nice, because it's kinda like a little Viper :)
I'm really looking for either a 2jz swap or the Mazda CX-90 Turbo lol. I know I'm going to need to be . . . creative to move it as far back as I can to try to keep the 50/50 weight distribution (kinda lol. I'm fat, it'll work out)
Miata is light car so it needs a light power train. K20A comes to my mind first. 230bhp with some small tweaks easily upto 300+ if you go really crazy with it still being NA. Or you go with Busa if you’re here for the time attack monster.
if you turbo a stock k20 or k24 you can expect ~400-500whp. I have a FG2 with a K20z3 making 420-440whpon 14-17lbs of boost.
Certainly, like a Miata engine they’re easy to make power with. Is yours in a Miata?
@@CashedOutCars mines not in a Miata its in a 07 civic si.
And how fast would that make a Miata 0-60??
302 sbf swap. I did this swap 20 years ago. A 350hp 302 is 180lbs more than the 2.0 Mazda motor.
Surprised the 2.5l Duratec 4 cyl and 3.0l Duratec V6 engine swaps are not in here. Kits available and especially with the 2.5 simple swap with good NA and crazy boosted HP available.
I have an extra 13B sitting around. It's tempting to put it in but on the flip side the KA24 swap kit is a complete package.
I always wanted to put a supercharged 3.8 out of a 90s Thunderbird or XR7, into a lightweight rear drive vehicle. Torque monster?
My dream swap is the sr20det which is the Silvia engine and is actually perfect for the Miata plus the swap kits are sold
The 2.3 disi mzr from the mps. 256 bhp / Ford duratec block so should be a lot of gearbox options for r.w.d. or Jag r type v8 swap 🤔
The tires on that Miata behind you are Kosei K1 Honda’s where did you get the center caps they do not come with them.
I am doing a V6 swap using a Ford 3.0l duratec engine produces 220 WHP as N/A but mine will be a twin turbo with around 335 at the wheels
That'll be a blast! What trans are you going to run?
@@CashedOutCars looking at trying to fit a Nissan 30a box this unit is good for 600hp have one in my 86 Datsun 300zx Turbo. Have also looked at other engines still in the research stage but your right it will be a lot of fun😁😁
Yeah I would like to see either a supercharged or turbocharged 3.8 GM
I agree, that’d be an awesome build
A redblock, t5 or om606 swap would be pretty neat ngl
My dream engine swap for an MX5 is a Mercedes Benz AMG M139S. Small but powerful 2 liter turbo engine. Feels like a Miata at the core and it will take off like a rocket.
The specs on that engine are insane, that'd be an awesome build!
I wanna see that in a Ford Pop, a Mk1 Cortina or a 1932 Ford.
would be weird but a diesel swap in a miata would probably rip tires with all that torque
I like that idea😎
Have you heard of anyone doing a bmw or Toyota inline six swap? Not sure if it would fit, but it’s an interesting thought 😊
boosted hayabusa swap. kit coming soon
Toyota's 3.5 litter v6. You can get 300 NA hp stock if you are lucky and they are super-efficient with aftermarket cams and other stuff. And they are in a bunch of Camrys and Highlanders. I would do it on a NB miata
Dream engine swap. Allison 1710. 28L and 1500hp
Ejswap would be sick on one of these
What about the LFX v6? 300+ hp, lightweight, and plentiful.
My dream Miata build is a billet three rotor with either twin or a big single turbo and sequential transmission
2.3 ecoboost is my dream swap.
The LFX swaps are awesome, I should have put that on this list. If I were to do a swap right now, it'd be LFX or Ecotec. Enjoy that car!
4g63t from the eco 8 would be a cool swap
My dream swap would be a 1uz fe 4l toyota made 4L v8 came in the soarer. Its a pipe dream
13B is nice but the best swap is to start with an RX-8 , it's just a lengthened MX-5 anyway... one donor car and you're done... and 90% of "bad" genesis rotaries just need new seals between the sections.
I’d like the 2003 is300 jz non turbo model in it, I think 215hp but with the right gear ratio it would book it
I personally would choose the gm lfx v6. It came in lots of different cars, most notably the camaro. The camaro v6 makes over 300hp N/A.
That is a very cool swap, having seen a few in person I really like them
Always thought Mazda missed the boat not offering a turbo rotary in these from the get go
You can use a LOT of FC bits, IE why everyone says that the S4 or S5 series rotaries are best for the swap
Am thinking about a 3.2 Yamaha/Ford SHO engine for my Miata
This may get a lot of hate, but I'd love to swap in a TDI Motor
I’d love to see that one too😎
hoping to be able to turbo following your setup this summer.
Awesome, have fun and feel free to comment any questions you have along the way!
@@CashedOutCars thanks man!
We build a K24Z3 and it made 201 whp, it feels quick even with that!
4.0 destroked ford coyote twin turbo with an 11k limiter, making 1,100 hp. In a completely gutted Miata with carbon fiber body panels and doors and a custom wide body kit. God like
My dream swap is a naturally aspirated bridgeported 13b, or a turbo RB26...
I’d engine swap mine with a 20V Blacktop 4AGE because I adore the sound and it it very cost efficient.
What about a 2zz from a Celica?🤔
I wonder what a boxer swap would look like try and find a boxer engine that's around the same weight as the stock motor but you lower the center of gravity I wonder how much it would improve the handling
