    Very well-done video. I'm a six month "newbie" whoI had a beautiful flat stomach and nice, long (if floppy) stoma, but it has developed a hernia on top. I am doing well with the one-piece light Convatec. Wonderful job! Very clear presentation. I envy your beautiful cutting!

    I'm just amazed at how quickly she cuts those openings. Zoom!
    This was a good overview of convexity and how to counteract it. I had trouble for a long time, always had leaks. Not really a problem anymore. A person really does need the right supplies.
    Find a Stoma Nurse to go to. Usually you will find them in the Wound Care Clinic in the nearest hospital. You can get some amazing advice. They will have a cabinet full of so many different supplies that you can try out. Go. Get a Stoma Nurse. It will help you a huge amount.

    I've had my ileostomy since 1987. (30 years! omg!) It's amazing how long one can go without seeing an ET nurse and therefore, miss out on new product innovations and releases. Every once in a while (ok, maybe 3 times in 30 years, I check into what's new and am amazed at what I find.
    This video was VERY helpful for me as I've had a convexity issue for maybe 15 or so years and have been mostly just getting by with my "system". I use an Eakin seal on a 1-piece Convatec with mild convexity. So thank you, StMichaelsHospital, for the awesome information! I'll be busy checking out more of your videos probably for at least the rest of today. :o)

    Thank you so much for this video... my gf just got the operation and is so depressed because still in the hosital the bag keeps leaking so im trying to find the right one for her. She has no roblem with the idea of the bag but the fact that it does nto hold long and keeps leaking is making her depressed. I wish there was a special store where we could look at all the options... right now we are going crazy but thank you because now atleast I see there are so many more options than just 1. 1 thing tho... I wish there was a name to each of the ones u tried on the video to make it easier for people to look ofr the ones they think will fit and find it on the internet and make an order. But iot was great information thank you a lot from Spain

      How are you going now? My dad is 2 months in and his is still leaking. Once a strong happy man, he’s now angry and very depressed. Possibly more surgery to sort out the leak which is at the side of his stoma. It’s hard watching it all happen. We are lucky in Australia as all the supplies are free. We have gone through many products and still doing so. Hopefully your partner is sorted now. It sure is a difficult time when things don’t work.

    Hello from Portugal and thank you very much for the excellent video.
    One question, does anyone feel that the glue on convatec boards sticks very little? My mother uses Natura Accordion Flange Convex Skin Barrier, and it sticks very little to the skin. It sticks less than a band-aid.

    Thank you for posting ! 2 weeks in and I've gone thru my entire monthly supply and had to purchase from Amazon to get me to the next insurance fill. I have that big yellow sponge one and using single flat bags with a barrier ring and have NO SKIN left after changing several times a day and night. Convex is going to be my best bet from what I see.

      If you have to buy your ostomy supplies, check the prices on Best Buy Medical Supplies. Their prices are very, very good and they pay shipping if you order $100 or more. Delivery is outstanding - three to four days from the time you order til the order arrives at your door. Give 'em a try. Check their prices on the internet. I wear Hollister and haven't found any better prices anywhere - and I've looked at everybody's prices!!! Three years in and Best Buy is still my go-to supplier. Take care of your stoma and it'll take care of you. I've named mine Rosebud and she's a finicky rascal! Had some problems after surgery, but when my ostomy nurse and I figured out Rosebud was convex, we had no more problems!!! Never leaks. Change every 3-5 days. Also use pouch liners from Colomajic - also order on-line. I've been where you are. Do what you need to do to take care of that stoma. It will become your best friend. My very best wishes to you!!!!

      Hi Mariana, I obtain my Supplies from Hollister.(I’m fortunate the Uk-NHS is Free for me.) I’m 82yrs had it for 5yrs.
      My Emergency Stoma is retracted, plus I have since a Hernia & have to wear a Special Hernia Belt ( on top of the belt which I attach to my Stoma pouch. However, initially my Stoma Nurse was wonderful on the way in which she informed for me to Care for it.
      Fingers Crossed I’ve NEVER had a Leak of any Sort. “ Perhaps you can get a Stoma Nurse to visit ur Mum, whereby she will be able to rectify the Problem your Dear Mum has. Best Wishes ( I noted SA I used to visit South Africa for Holiday’s)

    You did a Great Job at explaining and demonstrating how to apply your Convex. I too have an Ostomy 1 1/2 year old and a lil tummy too where my Stoma is an innie and not an outtie. I just found out that I be best to use the Convex because it will fit inwards closer to and more around the stoma. Thanks for showing my and other what we with tummy and innie stoma should consider and even try...Convex as opposed to non flat pouch.

      +J B Hi there my mom recently had a colostomy bag and we are going thru a leaking phase. I was wondering if you have have any ideas and what type of convex wafers would work. My mom has a tummy and an innie too. Her issues is i place the wafer on (laying down) and over time it could be 1 hr the stool gathers at opening and then mushrooms then bust out the sides. I have her on mrylax per the doctor. I use Hollister but very open to use another company if you know that works. thanks

      @jb7456 8 лет назад +2

      Hello, Thanks for your question. I too use Hollister products One Piece Flex pouch. As for your mom's issue with leakage; I would advise her to get this Hollister number pouch # 8568 32 mm 1 1/4 precut. Why because some convex can be more hard and stiff not flexable as the one I just advise. The one I advise is not convex but I feel will work best for her. Also make sure the area where the pouch tape will be place if free of any oils/lotions and completely dry before applying the pouch. Tell her to also order a skin sticky like prep wipe be 3M product called Cavilon no sting Barrier Wipes and make sure she stands up and leans back holding any excess stomach stretched upward and then place the pouch over the stoma. She should never let her bag get too full. I find that any movement should be emptied as soon as possible to help less and overflow and possible leakages. I hope this info helps her out.

    We had been using a barrier ring to provide a low level of convexity. What happens is that the barrier ring expands and splurges/pops through.

    • @sojourningteddybear6838
      @sojourningteddybear6838 5 лет назад +9

      RG John I have a large belly and use a belt. The belt REALLY helps protrude my stoma out from the fold, which assists with ensuring that the waste goes into the bag instead of leaking out of the sides like it did when I first got home from the hospital. The only con to the belt is it makes my sides itch........Also, you’ll probably need to invest in two or three belts at once in case of an accident, so you won’t have to wait until you’ve washed and dried it to put it back on.

  • @tifflovesmetal

    My stoma is on top of a bulging mound and is somewhat flush on one side. In need convex but it's hard to keep it against the skin as it can form a tunnel. I had to downsize to a smaller cut to fit to have the convex close to my stoma. It still rose off my skin a bit on the side of my scar so I added some strip paste to even it out.

      You need to find the right one for you. Ring all the bag manufacturers, eg Coloplast, Hollister, etc. they will send you samples. You also need to have an application regimen with your chosen bag. Do you need convex? Do you need a barrier ring? Make sure the area is dried off with a hair dryer. See an ostomy nurse, the suppliers have them and can talk you through things. There’s private FB ileostomy groups. I know it’s hard at first.

    The cost of these products is an absolute rip off. I have had a stoma since 1976 and have found the quality of the flanges /adhesive is now so poor that you need to change much more often adding to cost.
    I asked Hollister for a copy of their catalouge / charges which they flatly refused to issue so the patient has no way of knowing what is available to meet their needs.
    The demo looks at stomas that require uniform barriers but not all of us are 'perfectly shaped which leads to a lot of waste, but that means more money for Hollister!

    • @tinav1341

      Why continue with hollister. I cringe thinking of the thousands of dollars wasted on leaky and often problematic bags. I use coplast sensura mio now. Been years since, no leaks. I am lumpy and bumpy and tracked with scars. Im thrilled to sleep now. Resting easy.
