I have to ask, was your surgery an emergency? I had an emergency colectomy, because I had a perforation. I have a similar scar (it's still healing). I spent 3 months on a wound vac. I was just wondering if this kind of healed scar is what I should expect. Anyway, you have helped so much with my recent transition into living with a stoma.
Hi Maggie, I am a 61 year old woman who has rectal cancer and because of the place of the tumor my sphincter cannot be fixed so, on Wednesday, I will be putting a colostomy in. I’m excited and I’m scared at the same time I’m excited because I will not be Poing my pants anymore on a continuous basis yet I’m scared that it will be hard to do with the bags and stuff. I just want you to know I love your videos and they give me much relief and comfort knowing somebody with a lot of experience and knowledge will be able to help me out in a lot of these situations!😊
Great video Maggie. I have a colostomy with a thicker output and use the non drainable Coloplast bags with the filter, and I dispose of them when they are 1/3 full or fuller. I find the filter to be a great feature because I don't have to manually burp my bags and, even better, don't have to smell the gassy burps! The stickers are actually to put on the outside of the filter to protect the filter from getting wet and are to be applied before a shower, bath or swimming to protect the integrity of the filter. I do find that when the filter gets wet from the inside of the bag, there is an extremely faint smell that starts emitting from the bag, but this is resolved by changing the bag (luckily I have great coverage and have more bags than I could ever need). I have never had output leak out of the filter, even when my output has been watery.
Ileostomy here. With an ileostomy I can have an all liquid day or a very "colostomy" type day. Definitely like the colostomy type days. Diet is super important. If I have tons of processed food I have super liquid but if I have veggies...I get thick output.
my 17 year old daughter got her ileostomy in September and so far we have learned that for her we prefer convex hollister--- opaque--- no belt---- 2 piece ---- convex. This video was so informative! thank you!
I am so glad I found your channel. I have had an ostomy due to diverticulitis with an abcess and having surgery. My stoma and wound were so close that for 2 years I spent more in than out of hospital and rehab due to infections from stool leaking into wound. Am so glad wound now is healed and not much leaking. I have gotten great info from your videos!!!
I have an ileostomy, and I’m TPN dependent. Completely NBM. I also have a large hernia which they won’t operate on, because my health is so poor. Does anyone have any ideas to help bags stay on? I’m dealing with them falling off when I’m sitting up in bed, or them leaking overnight. Due to the hernia, I seem to be obstructing a lot, so nothing will happen for a day or two, and I will have lots of tummy pain. Then it will go 24 hours of uncontrollable water. So my stoma is constantly irritated and bleeding. It just feels constantly wet and sore. The hernia is the size of a small melon now. I will go and look through the other videos to see if this topic is covered. It’s nice to have someone talking so openly about their stoma and all that comes with it. 💞
Urostomy is for people who predominantly had a cystectomy, removal of bladder. It is for urine discharge, mucous can be in it too. Basically same products are involved, but urostomy patients can connect the bag to a "night bag" which can also be used for travel etc.
Thank you Maggie for making this video! I have an Urostomy, and find the overnight drainage to be very important. Otherwise, I am needing to wake up every 1.5 to 2 hours to drain my pouch. I have had issues with the adapters for the tubing connecting my drainage tap from my pouch to the larger collection bag. I have had several near misses with a pouch ready to burst due to the tubing getting pinched or twisted. I now use a Velcro leg strap to make sure the tubing is secure and not twisted. I am now going to be using the night drainage system from Convatec - it is a jug that sits in on the floor. The collection bags I use overnight now, and to have to be cleaned with vinegar and water using a very small funnel. After about 3 weeks, the bag needs to be disposed of. The Convatec jug can be easily cleaned and is not meant to be disposable. Just wanted to share some of the issues I have had - 6 months with my Urostomy.
Maggie thanks so much for this vlog. I especially liked that you included the urostomy, which I have had for 2 1/2 years. I’m still using the Coloblast convex all in one bag but finding that the adhesive is not sticking very well now and in 1-2 days it leaks right thru. I’m calling them tomorrow for suggestions and samples. Thanks again. 😊
Hey you just gained a subscriber🎉 you are amazing, please tag the video where you explain what led to this disease and symptoms before your surgery. Love you❤🇿🇦
Great info Maggie. 😊. I am still a clip closure girl. Because I have a lot of output, I feel more secure with the clip. Especially during my fluids( i.vs. )
Coloplast also has opaque bags without the clear plastic, on which the filters are placed differently than the clear ones. The sticker can also be used when bags vacuum.
Thank you so much Maggie 💓 This was a super helpful video. I didnt even know there was that many brands out there. Definitely will get some samples to try them out. I've been having problems with SenSura Mio Flip convex "petals" and their bags. One it doesn't feel or help like convex at all. 2) The bag is awful for rinsing after dumping bag, charcoal leaks everywhere and stool gets on the foam comfort ring around your stoma which makes the bag really gross. 3)it also has some weird plastic sheet inside and output gets trapped between the plastic sheet and you cant get it clean. The sticker aids in keeping water from getting into the filter during shower and swims. Which leads me to 4) I used the sticker to keep my bag from sucking all air out and causing more pancaking in that bag. Every flip i put on Id pancake and output would go under wafer and before the day was over, I'd have to take it off and put on a new one. 😢I went back to Hollister after 1 week of that changing daily. But again, I thank you for going over these because now I will try those others you showed and also that guy's website so I can hopefully get samples of many more. I need to find the perfect one for me. Im having stoma and hernia issues. My stoma doesn't stay out and doesn't stay same shape as when I cut it, therefore it causes the area around stoma to break seals daily.
This is so funny for me to see this video today as yesterday I just watched your video from 4 years ago where you had all the different bags arranged in a binder and talked about each one. It's good information to have so thanks for sharing again! ☺
One of the customizations I make to my bags is to cut off the belt tabs since I dont' use an ostomy belt. I wish they'd make them with and without; it would save me time.
I have a urostomy and use Coloblast, I have thought about cutting them off too. Now I know you do I think I’m going to try it. I’m having problems with my flange leaking so I’m calling Coloblast tomorrow to talk to a nurse or someone to try some different bags they have for a urostomy.
@@wendiewegner9236 have you tried a Coloplast Bravia Protective Seal with a convex urostomy bag? The magic bullet to prevent leaks for me! The seal fills in gaps so you stay dry. I can go 4 solid days between changes. I use a one piece Sensura Mio soft convex
I'd been getting 7 days per system using Convatec Moldable till I changed my diet and output became more fluid. I've had my stoma 18 mos. and I do have some other samples. I like the feeling of the one piece Senso-Mio and I put one on 3 days ago. This morning I decided to change it and found it had already begun to allow output beneath the seal. I've still got plenty of the Convatec '420's with an '805 wafer, but, I was curious to see how I felt going back to using one of the Hollister 2 pc systems I still have from the hospital. I notice upon closing the rings that it was way more easy to close than the Convatec. I suspect that's why those may have issues at that 'juncture'. I got the Senso-Mio from my wound care nurse who also got me my first convatec system. I've just put in a sample request from Coloplast. The last of the big three I have to ask. Negotiating our own solutions is a wonderful capacity. Babies, children, and the infirmed are at the mercy of their caretakers.
Have had my ileostomy for going on 2 years and have watched your vids since the fall of '22. Looking forward to the accessory vid. I'm in Canada and get my appliances/accessories from Payless Medical so I will def be looking for some of the brands you mentioned. Currently using a Convatec 2 piece system but it's nice to know there are a lot of options. As always Maggie, your videos are a great source of info and a comforting inspiration!
Hey! Love how educational your videos are. I have learned so much! I was wondering if you could perhaps please caption your "shorts" as I need captions to understand them:). I can turn the closed captions on with your long videos, but the shorts aren't captioned and it bums me out lol. Thanks again!!!
Thank you so much. My skin does not like holister flange. I really like the descrete bag you showed. I love the festure that tuckes the end in. Can you tell me which one that is? I am asking my edgepark rep for a catalog. I appreciate you!
I have hernia under my stoma that makes it look like I have softball under it. They say it is not worth fixing unless it's causing pain, which it doesn't. So I need a flange which will form around the 'dome'. The Hollister gear works fine. Unfortunately it does mean I have to wear track pants, long t-shirts and always looks like I have a beer belly. :(
Just to say, I know your pain. My hernia is the size of a small melon, because of poor health they say it’s too dangerous to operate. My bags just keep popping off or leaking every day. It’s frustrating and from one side I look 7 months pregnant. Urgh!
@@OneLove101. Hi; Thanks. My hernia specialist said fixing them would be major surgery and might just happen again, so not worth it unless in a lot of discomfort. Not sure what gear you're using, if the pouch is popping off or the flange is coming off your skin. The Hollister flange seems to form around my 'dome' pretty well. I can only suggest the skin is completely clean of adhesive, skin flakes and hair. I understand you're a woman but there might be fine light hair on your abdomen to shave. I use a little rubbing alcohol last and a hair dryer before I stick a new one on. Also regular habit of checking the flange is still snapped in. Sometimes I put a little 'sports tape' on the edges of the cloth if it's starting to fray. My other suggestion is diet. Foods that will bung you up a little so it's not liquid all the time. I also take a fare amount of pills that can cause constipation so I have the opposite problem, having to take Senokot to get things moving after a few days of nothing. I have managed to somewhat time these, no discharge periods, to shower without the gear or go out, a meeting etc. I sure miss my jeans and belt. :(
@@OneLove101. I also stopped using the pliable disk which is meant to help around the edge of the cut out hole in the flange. They made the adhesion worse.
