So. I have a story. I first heard "The city of new Albion" and "Annabel's Lament" several times as part of a steampunk collection a friend gave me. I recognized the shared singer's voice, so I looked up others. I thought "A Steampunk Opera" was the name of just the band. It wasn't until I listened to the lyrics of "Edgar Builds a Business" and heard the shared themes that I realized these were from an actual opera. Then Google led me here. I was not disappointed.
The Narrator is a very difficult role, especially her songs. The way they staged her involvement is very clever, especially how the other characters pause like she's telling the story. : )
I love how In The Movement 2, when Amelia is crying out to Byron to help her, to even notice her, Jasper is trying to reach for her because he recognises how much pain she's in and wants to help, but Byron keeps forcibly making him look at him, and because he's a doll he can't go to her unless someone (in this case Byron, who "owns" him) lets him. It really speaks volumes to Jasper's character in such a simple, single movement
given what they had to produce this and their skill, I think they did well for what they had. it was worth watching, if only to really hear all of the songs along with the story. maybe not the best, but i'm not complaining, and i'm glad I watched this production. a big thumbs up to the cast!
Tim Ledsam (Edgar) and Zoe McGee (Annabelle) were my favorites next to the dancers. Every time I watch this, Zoe brings me to tears when she sings, "You Could Have Been My Angel." I plan to be in this production when I am given the green light by my voice coach and I want to play Edgar. I am learning by watching Tim. Gotta give it up to Carina (Dancer) she noticeably blew out her knee at 1:09 and kept going. I found out she had to have surgery
Keyboard Komments My school did Mary Poppins and was going to do Midsummer Night's Dream, but that one got canceled. A shame, really, considering I wanted to see it.
The choreography is astounding. It takes bravery to put on a show that’s not well known and to do so with such minimalism- this production is just breathtaking.
As a math and science nerd, I like the extra's shirts with the formulas and equations. There were several chemical formulas that I didn't recognize, as well as Euler's identity and the formula for relativistic time from special relativity.

Alright I've never seen the original but MAN, I am glad I watched this one. Choreography was on point, expressions were on point, I love what you did with the fan shadow??? I thought that was GENIUS and really set the tone. Narrator was fantastic :D and Byron too. I loved what you did with Annabella's coat being the only colour, other than the Doll's makeup, and how the only real colours were red through the whole thing. Also the what, son of Annabella? The dude who decided to sell the dolls. He was genuinely creepy and I love the actor for him, so perfect. A pleasure to watch.
Ok so fare this is the best version of this I can find (except for the album) 1You can actually hear the singers 2The dancing is so fucking beautiful and more the makes up for the lack of props 3Thins like the dancing, making the doll a painted human, it all makes it feel like a belay and is really a site to see
One thing i noticed and absolutely love is that jasper at 1:16:09 quite literally stands up against and Tells the soldiers that their downfall will soon come. (at least that's how i interpret it)
The way Jasper would just copy Byron's movements because he was just what Byron wanted him to be and the only time he is actually himself in the whole show is at the end, when finally nobody expects anything of him

Ive done stage craft in my previous classes, but never really gotten into watching any of the plays as Ive only assisted in building props. But... WOW. That was fantastic, excellent job! Jasper sounded like he mightve had a bit of a frog in his throat. But its amazing to see this acted out. I really hope it catches on and we can see this story spread
Not only is this the first time I've ever watched this play, it's my first time watching a professional play at all, and I'm glad I stumbled across this one! Bravo! :)
While I like seeing the emotion in Jasper's face, I'm not much of a fan of having a human play him. I don't think it captures the creepiness of putting a soul in a doll. They're supposed to move so little that it's very difficult to tell if they're actually alive or not. That being said, I do love Jasper's voice. A very close match to Mr. Shapera himself, I think.
+Chuckleluck While I agree in concept, it's clear this was a very low budget production. In my head I always imagined the dolls as having purely robotic bodies but their head would be a TV who's screen was a feed of the person who was brough back.
+Bloodian I always imagined them to have the head of those Robax mannequins. You know, vague shape of a human head with a smooth wooden finish and no features whatsoever.
Michelle Lehto If you look up the other performance of the Steampunk Opera on RUclips (which the opera's author was directly involved with), that's pretty much the way they depicted the dolls.

Like more brown, gold and brass colours for cloths and more jewelry with clocks (props), but other then that really amazing~
It was the portrayal of Jasper that saved this one for me. Jack Taylor did a marvellous job of depiction the raw emotion of Jasper as well as delivering excellent singing. The scene of Jasper's execution were the one scene I found this production portrayed better than the one were Mr Shapera himself were involved, it really depicted the horrible bruteness of the scene as well as the raw emotion, the soldiers doing it by hand. It gave me chills. Although that were sadly ruined with the no-crops guns by the rest of the scene. But overall, it was interesting and fun to watch Mr Shapera's opera played out, I've been listening to the music of it for so long that it's just incredible to see it being played out either way.

Not overly satisfied with the Annabelle scenes. This was my favorite segment of the album, and the actress' voice didn't quite do it justice. Not saying it was horrible, but she sounds a little flat.
For me its apt mad genius scientist can't quite sing at opera level. Leave something for us, Annabel ;) But frankly, this was my first exposure to all of this and character of (this) Annabel was what drew me in.
25:58 so when, at last, my father fell with a bullet through his spine the hand that held onto that smoking gun and pulled the trigger was mine as he lay there, dying on the floor he whispered I forgive you, son Ain’t no other way that our story could end No other way our race could be run
I love your performance, Especially the use of an actual actor for Jasper, I was wondering if you could let me know where you got the rights to the Opera, and share that information as I can't seem to find anything for it. I've been considering pitching to my troupe director that we try this Opera, but it'd need to have the right info, so sharing would be greatly appreciated!!!
Wait. So if Jasper is Fay’s father And Byron is Fays son Does that mean that By was in love romantically with his Grandfather??!!?! No the F*** wonder Jaz wasn’t returning no love for By that’s just odd. I always portrayed Jaspers love for Priscilla as fatherly because she reminds him of Fay before he died
What's the name of the blue haired dancer? My favourite parts of this production were defiantly her and Byron in voodoopunks and movement 1. I'd love to look for any other works that they took part in
Unfortunately "The Dolls of New Albion" wasn't written to be performed. It's meant to be sung, not acted, so it's quite a challenge to present it visually. A story that's meant to be a musical is usually composed mostly of scenes that are each either acted out between people in conflict with each other, or sung by a chorus. Narration is rare in musicals because it defeats the purpose of the medium. Also, a musical is revised between rehearsals, because you can't tell on the page how it will work on the stage.
Would have been better if your narrator could hold a steady note, or new the lyrics, but short of that it was awesome. I like that you used an actual performer for Jasper instead of a dodgy puppet, that alone sold me - it gives the opportunity to show his evolution through the acts. Also your Edgar was perfect.
For a small stage I'd say 2/5, I liked the album, and the changes to the music really touched up nicely, as for the actors, some better than others. Dancing in the background is very strange, focus should be on the actors, not dancers. Lots of little mistakes in singing as the actors forgot and added words to the original script, No props make this a bit of a pain to watch. to be honest, with such young actors this looks more like a school play than anything else. (A few touch-ups: Annabel needs to actually have a lab with beakers and tubes, you know Frankenstein set-up. The Dolls need to have some kind of costume that resembles their heavy exterior shell of a body, Midevil armor or Cyberman look to it. Gun Props for soldiers. The girl playing cards with her Doll of a great grandfather should be giant compared to her, she is probably only about 15.
Zyvo2 I think the dancers (esp in the priscilla x jasper play cards scene) are supposed to symbolize the actors, in movement instead of words. So you listen to them, and watch the dancing for more interpretation

as he lay there, dying on the floor
he whispered I forgive you, son
Ain’t no other way that our story could end
No other way our race could be run
Anabelle is Edward elric
KET The Artist this comment is underrated xD
Byron is the best actor and singer here

*Applauds forever....
I think I'm in love with the narrator...
I love your performance, Especially the use of an actual actor for Jasper, I was wondering if you could let me know where you got the rights to the Opera, and share that information as I can't seem to find anything for it. I've been considering pitching to my troupe director that we try this Opera, but it'd need to have the right info, so sharing would be greatly appreciated!!!
nice.
I'd love to get a studio version of this to listen to while i work.

all here, man
Awesome guys !!
you all did very good! :)
Wait.
So if Jasper is Fay’s father
And Byron is Fays son
Does that mean that By was in love romantically with his Grandfather??!!?!
No the F*** wonder Jaz wasn’t returning no love for By that’s just odd.
I always portrayed Jaspers love for Priscilla as fatherly because she reminds him of Fay before he died
Yeah, in the fandom we mostly try to ignore that fact. Or meme the hell out of it.
47:51 looks like there's blue eyes in the background lol
The blue haired doll is hot as hell too!
This is great
I find the first song to be my favorite.
Watch this production too! vimeo.com/58431554 It has the majority of the original cast from the concept album
That from vimeo is a nice performance... This one in youtube is, I'm gonna say, a good try, cause it's hard to dance and act while singing...
Omg yes! The one on Vimeo is the first one I saw, and it was amazing. Broke my heart in the final act, so good.
