I'm on Nutrisystem now for the second time. The first time was 15 years ago, and I lost 30#, going from 205 to 175. I remember after I hit my goal weight having EXACTLY the experience Dr. Martin describes. I didn't want to lose more, but Nutrisystem didn't offer any guidance on how to wean off the plan to "normal" food. Fast forward to today, life happens, and here I am giving it another shot. I exercise 4x a week, both lifting and cardio. Nutrisystem is reteaching me two really important lessons: portion control and listening to my hunger. I find myself recognizing that I don't need to fill my plate (or have seconds!) to feel full. I've also become more attuned to seeing food for what it is, fuel, rather than a reward. Once again for those in the back: Food is fuel, not a reward. I'm down about 8lbs in 2 1/2 weeks. Onward!

Excellent! This is a good example of the kinds of things one can learn from different approaches to eating. There is no one way of doing something. Thank you for sharing this, it will be encouraging to many!

So, what I am understanding is that Nutrisystem is a good way to lose weight but it’s temporary and you will need education on how to keep it off. I have been looking at this for an option. Btw. I love, love, love all the stuff you have been sharing here in RUclips!

Thanks Michele! If you are only looking for a short term improvement, then Nutrisystem will work fine for you. If you want long term or life long improved health, you will need to identify your current nutrition and fitness choices that keep you from reaching your goals and learn effective options. I would love to help you reach your goals. - Dr. Tim Martin

What about it being all processed foods?

    • @TimMartinMDAbilene

This is an excellent question! The answer lies in which processed foods are fine for us and which to avoid. There is no one answer to that question, but in general, the closer the food is to the original ingredients, the less processed. Guacamole, especially freshly made, is minimally processed, and a loaf of bread from the grocery store is highly processed. Most fast food is highly processed, but there are a growing number of fast food stores that are using very fresh ingredients in their food. Nutrisystem is simply one acceptable way to lose some weight in the short term, but you are going to need a long term plan as well.

I want something like nutri systems so I won’t spend so much time in the kitchen at my age and just buy my fresh produce like leafy vegetables and fruit.

Funny you say that, we are working on a basic "tutorial" of how to shop in the store and what delicious and nutritious foods to keep in the fridge and pantry so people have plenty of yummy and good for us meal options. You think food prep in the kitchen is the biggest thing holding you back?

I'm sorry to hear that. I have seen a lot of people for whom one particular approach or another hasn't worked. Please try something else that involves a professional with nutrition experience and actual whole food. Your answer is out there and I know you can find it!
