God I love this channel!
Agree 100%. Modern motoring journalism is as boring as batshit. I am way more interested in all the weird and wonderful bangers on Hubnut.
@@person.X. Indeed. This is the main reason I subscribed to this channel. So much awesome content right there.
I didn't see that escort in amongst all that rubbish at first!
I'm glad everyone loves the dinosaur 😂
I've had that since I was eight and has survived 30 years of moving house and car boots. I'm glad he opened the boot as I thought I'd lost it!
Always carry a spare dinosaur with you - never know when you might need it
yes, apparently before peak oil dried up all known reserves of oil ,you could squeeze the dinosaur to get the oil and put it in the fuel tank. Thats a bit small that one so it might just be a trans fluid dinosaur.
yeah, this car comes from that design period in the mid/late 90s when cars were generally transitioning from the 80s style "right angles and straight lines" to late 90s/early 2000 "everything must be curvy" design philosophy. The same thing happenned with BMWs, one minute they were all angular and german looking, the next they all looked like suppositories, and still do to this day. This is odd, because a suppository is supposed to be inside an arsehole, whereas the modern BMW has an arsehole inside it.
"they all looked like suppositories" - Good one, and who remembers the Sierra? That looked like a successful suppository's raison d'etre.
My wife drives a BMW and she is an arsehole SHIT SHE’S COMING
The BMW E36 3-series made from 1992 to 1998 I think it was, are a great example of what you describe. I don't find them particularly off-putting, but the sudden transition from the previous model (the E30) was so sudden and jarring. Suddenly the 3-series looked cheapened and vague in appearance from all angles besides the front (due to the grill, primarily).
@@chesswizard31 The Ford Scorpio was the suppository of choice for the larger a-hole. They were anonymous to the point of invisibility, yet still managed to be offensive. If Men in Black knocked on your door and made you forget the UFO you'd seen, they'd emerge from a black MkII Scorpio. Which you'd have already forgotten.
Current styling trends demand as many angles as possible to any body panel. A simple rear light can go in six different ways at once, and a door looks like a Futurist manifesto. We'll look back on today's cars with same what-were-we-thinking as a 1972 wedding album.
Bloody hell, i just inhaled beer. you evil pokemon
Not Fords best design period. I had one (hardtop), and frankly, it was shit. I lent it to my then girlfriend and shortly afterwards she left me and took it with her. Win win.
great comment, seems she did you a big favour, not sure which one wouldve cost you more in the long run !
Agreed, they were an absolute pile of crap, though it did help to make the Mk1 Focus look amazingly advanced when they introduced it!
I've driven one from the UK to Belarus, Russia (Dagestan, Chechnya), Georgia, Azerbaijan.
It served me really well and can't be too badly made because I hammered it along many terrible, terrible roads and it never missed a beat (you can see videos of me driving it on RUclips).
My dad had an early MK6 on a 95 N plate, it was an LX with the 1.6LX with the zetec engine. The engine was great and the car was a lot cheaper than a 306 of the same age so they did make for bargain cars. It was generally very reliable he had it for about 4 years before replacing it with a slightly newer Fiesta.
I had a 1988 model I lost the key once and ask a neighbour if I could try his Ford escort key. It worked better than the original one, I got a copy of his one.
I remember Fast Ford magazine mentioning the mk4 Escort range had upgraded Chubb locks for the 1987 model year in a Used Car Buyer's Guide they did in the mid-1990's.
Yeah, that was when they changed to the odd very-Ford key. Seem to recall you could still break into one very easily...
@@HubNut Ford are still very lazy In that department. I have a transit at the moment with central locking on a 55 plate. Shockingly easy to break into with out any damage. And they still rusted in the same places they did 30+years ago, sorry I'm getting carried away 😊
I had a Nissan almera I was selling a few years ago. The bloke was on his way and I locked my key in the car. Went and got a pair of scissors and picked the door lock very easily. Sold it and sighed a gasp of relief. I think all old cars were easy to break into.
1960s/70s ft127 ign/door key was the "Master" for all Ford models,.....
James may would be proud of your car collection over the years 😅 :)

If ever there was a man ill suited to a car. This is it
Spot on!
Oh I don't know. HubNut looked vaguely cool in that Mazda MX-5 a few weeks back. Sunspecs and hair billowing....
Really pleased to see you review a car from the late 90'S. This Escorts now 22 years old and really should be accepted as a classic. I have a friend who was taking an MGB to classic events when it was less than 10 years old! It seems strange to me that these days many people see a car built even 30 years ago as "Modern"
The MGB was an English sports car, and a last of the breed. Modern car design of the last 20 years hasn’t really changed substantially. Compared to eras like the 50s to 70s, etc.
@@00kirbyd To an extent I agree with you certainly with mainstream cars, but cars like the EP3 Civic Type R, Clio Williams, Audi B7 RS4, BMW E60 M5 ect are the end of an era too. they represent the ultimate in high revving naturally aspirated engines with manual gearboxes in most cases a combination that will never be available to us again. 1990's and early 2000's cars are reliable and usable too without the over complexity of new cars.
We have a MK6 calypso, basically that but even more basic. No foglights, rear wind up windows, no chrome or wood and a smaller 1.6, but we love it
Hubnut always know how to dial down the glamour meter and dial up the humor! I love this channel so much. We haven't had a Ford Escort in the United States since 1997. Ours never looked that great honestly. No convertibles were offered.
Seems to me the last Escorts we got in Canada were Mazda 323s under the skin. They used Ford's 1.9 instead of Mazda's 1.8.
I noticed when I was in the US sometime ago ( when it was mainly local made Ford and GM V8 cars on the road) there were a few thinly disguised Ford and GM (Vauxhall) euro models out there but the finish on them was ghastly, they looked like they had been made in a fast east sweat shop.
Yes Ian, you are clearly not a Ford man, more Japanese and French cars. In the meantime I started on my 8th Ford oldtimer, a Fietsa 1.1L from 1983.
Is that a nice car ?
I get the distinct impression you would rather have been doing something else on this day, perhaps with good reason. Specifically to do with the Ford Escort, apart from an extra 200cc and a folding roof, it's what I've got. And I don't find it half as bad as you did. Having picked the Escort to replace a 2014 Vauxhall Astra SRi Sports Tourer with a 1.6 petrol engine and automatic gearbox, and having chosen it in preference to a 2003 Toyota Corolla VVTi and a 2002 Nissan Almera, allowing for the age of the vehicle I actually find the Ford's build quality, switchgear, instruments, driving position, steering, engine and transmission superior to the modern Vauxhall. As far as I'm concerned now, Vauxhalls are very nasty. I'll accept the Escort handling isn't all that hot but being pinned into an uncomfortable seat with high seat bolsters so you can corner at 4G on the four mile commute to work isn't for everybody. If I wanted to do that, I'd buy a black Audi with no indicators. I think on a different day, with different weather and different roads, you might not have been quite so disparaging about the Escort.
I guess the whole point is with cars it's each to their own. You think modern Vauxhalls are nasty (the 1.6 Auto drivetrain you had in your Astra is pretty naff actually, one of the worst combos in that era Astra). Anyway, as i say, you think modern Vauxhalls are nasty, many people think mk6 Escorts are pretty rubbish including all the motoring press of the time. Most people i suspect would far rather run a '14 Astra over an old MK6 Escort. Because they'd think the Vauxhall is far better. And that's not meant to be nasty...simply a fact.
I’ve owned and/or borrowed Fords. Some I liked some I didn’t. Same goes for VWs, Citroens and Peugeots I’ve owned.
I think fwd Escorts by this time were seriously outdated and felt like a thrice-reheated Mk3, whereas the Astra, 306, Bravo/Brava and even the dowdy old Corolla had moved on. For 1980 the mk3 was ok, nowt special but not terrible.
The mk6 Escort my brother ran for a few years in the early 2000s was utter cack and constantly needed remedial work despite being looked after and cared for, which for a 5-6 year old car was p***-poor. It was scrapped at 8 years old and replaced with a 3y/o Rover 75. The 2 Mk6 Escort vans my dad had a company vans, and meticulously maintained as part of a huge fleet were also troublesome and often coming home on the big yellow taxi.
Never fail to amuse us at the same time as educate us!! I wanted to say how since discovering you, you’ve literally brought me and my father together with something we mutually both enjoy!! So thank you.. honestly.
The dash trim is mottled plastic fake wood, I did the conference for the company that made them :-)
They had a conference just to discuss the plastic wood they would use in a MK6 Escort? Seems a bit overkill?
@@SA77888 almost, they made plastic trim for more upmarket brands too, although those were the sort with faux chrome on.
@@markkinnon4866 LOL interesting :)

bizarrely i went for a drive this afternoon got back and had a cup of tea turned on my computer and a notification that hubnut just put up a new video and guess what you were filming the same rout that i just did 20 minutes earlier it was a bit of a wow what are the odds moment. Keep up the good work
The late hatch models were fine handling cars, although not anything approaching the Focus. My friend had an S reg example and even with the old 1.3 chapper engine, he made it fly!
Hubnut pulls off in the rain to lower the top! He does this declaring that it's "a very British thing". I love this channel and its counter culture message.
I like how it looks, and the interior
I wish I still had my capris and mk2 escorts, I could retire now , I loved my old fords in the 80/90s , I did buy a brand new 2006 focus st that was a beast
Am I one of the few people who loves 90s wierd styling?
My general rule for convertibles is - as long as the wipers aren't on the highest speed, the roof comes down.....
chris penn my first convertible was a 328i from Dick Lovett. I was so excited when I bought it I couldn’t wait to get the top down. It was raining and I had a 50 mile drive home. I drove out the dealers in Swindon and stopped about a mile down the road and got the top down. Couldn’t care less about the rain. Did 300k miles in that car .....
@@79devo Excellent - I've never had the patience to keep a car for that many miles!
chris penn yep it’s true. Bought it used for £21,995 in 2003 and drove it into the ground (sales rep) and sold it for £1500 in 2008. Best car I ever had.
Never a car to look at and say "I want one" but you knew it had the underpinnings of a reliable, cheap to run Escort. That is what made it a short list contender for people on a budget who fancied an open top. Ford reliability, four seats, chunky switchgear, a bit of fun in the summer....why not? Lovely!:)
I used to work for MIRA a few years ago, and quite a few of my older colleagues had fond memories of working on the Turd Polishing Project that was the MkV-VI transition. Some of the development cars lived on as site hacks, Ford having disowned them when the project finished. MIRA also had quite a few LDV Maxus Vans at the time, as the flagging LDV couldn't afford to pay their bills so paid in vans. That main beam/indicator quirk was included at no extra cost.
I had the estate version about 7 years ago, and I think it was one of the best cars i've ever had. It had a fair share of "quirks and features", but it was very easy to love. It drove like a heavy car, but was still very snappy when I put the pedal to the metal. It also torque-steered a lot, and the clutch squeaked and juddered. But the interior space was enourmous! The rear seat leg room was huge. The seats were the best seats I've had in any car. All in a car that looked pretty small on the outside. It might not have been a technical marvel, but at least it looked modern with its rounded styling.
Unfortunately they rust a lot. The sills and the floors on mine was patched up with bodyfiller and riveted metal plates. The rear wheel arches almost didn't exist. It was literally the paint holding the arches together. But I still loved the car.
Unfortunately I crashed it in late 2011, only a few months after it has been EU-approved (norwegian MOT equivalent). I really miss that car. It died only 16 years old.
PS: The car i bought after this Escort was a Mazda 323F identical with yours. Even the color and the amount of dents and dings :)
A great video ian , i once owned a 1.3 1982 ford escort Ghia , a 5 door in silver with blue velour interior - beautifull to me then it got nicked about a month after I bought it early 2000s ! My appeal with escorts waned after that , but this is a lovely example . I once saw one of these late model cabs in a metallic bright yellow ! It actually looked good to me , that was prob 1999 !
Ford always feel like a company that is just blindly wandering around the market like a lost soul, a sort of Theresa May of car manufacturers.
LoL!
You mean corbyn. Surely
They’ve been the best selling brand in Britain since 1970 so they must be doing something right although modern fords are getting shitter by the year
In all fairness thats 100% opinion. Globally Ford are one of the only manufacturers that still make interesting cars, you have however explained GM in a nutshell.
@@thrillseekanz7874 agreed
i dont know if it was mentioned before..

when you want to enter the road ,you use the middle or the side(of the road) mirror?
you put your hands inside the steering wheel?

This was very exciting. :-)
Not even watched it but gave my usual thumbs up. In the middle of DIY but will savour this video for later today.....
1.8 16v power whoah!
The Skoda Estelle cabriolet had a switch for the rear windscreen wiper, it lit up and everything. Well not quite everything as the rear window was plastic and didn't actually have any heating.
Lol... I always love your reviews Ian but I do think you are just a bit too harsh on the old girl... I mean we are talking about a 22 yr old car that was due to be replaced by the time she came out... I understand how you might not be a big fan of Ford in a country where every 3rd or 4th car is a blue oval and I admit this car was far from perfect, but some of your observations here tend to be nitpicking if you ask me.... Greetings from Amsterdam!
In fairness, there's a lot to like about this car - most of which _did_ get a mention in the review.
MORE OF THIS SORT OF THING please, I had a MK6 van in 1997, it was 6 months old and very nice to drive
Have you done a review of the Rover 800? I'd like to see your take on a Rover Sterling (as I always wanted one, and know I never will...)
No, but there is something happening on that front...
Bangin' tunes!
Zetec engines were in the Mk5 too :-). It's no Mondeo Mk1, lol.

No 'triangle of doom' on the camera lense I noted. :) Most excellent. Yes, another day has been brightened up for me Ian. Your down to earth humour that you clearly don't realise that you posses is one of your greatest assets. Baboons arse will stick in my memory forever now, chortle.
Seeing what you drive about in This is Brilliant
I had one of these,3rd hander so a bit knackered but I'd have it back in a heartbeat. Loved everything about it,it was fast.
Not my favourite Ford but certainly from an era when cars were more interesting
Brought back memories of my brother's (later my) Escort 1.8i GL. Same interior but (thankfully!) a hard top! Engine was superb, pulled like a train from no revs at all then went like stink. Got rid in the end as a wheelbearing went, the timing belt was like an elastic band and the 2nd gear syncromesh was getting worn. It was a decent motor but remains my only Ford to date. I'm like you Ian,they've never done a right lot for me.
i really really miss the ford escorts . i had 2 of them and hands down they were great cars and still are today
I always thought the rear lights on these looked like they were on upside down as a kid. That undercut design for rear lights has been in recently!
super review and i remember driving one of them, 90s where the best years for cars and music good old day's
I like watching your videos look forward to seeing more
Down my neck of the woods again and you didn't drop in for a cuppa 😉 good review
Why does it have a white clock but black dials in the cluster?
Did it come from the factory like that?
Yes. I think the clock looks nice. White binnacle dials would be a bit much.
It's nice to watch someone using the handbrake correctly and not yanking it on through the ratchet as hard as possible like most people seem to do.
Why are you keeping your foot down on the Clutch pedal at road junction' s for a long time ?
Something I've always done. I like to be ready to go. Can't say any car I've owned has greatly suffered for it. The Fox would, so I need to break the habit (different clutch mechanism).
I was going to get in touch about offering up my 306 Cabriolet for the hubnut Road Test, but I thought it'd be too glamorous... But now I see this!! What a beauty 😂
I cant believe you dropped the roof in the pouring rain. Only in Wales love it. :-)
Only Hubnut will put the roof down in the rain and then complain that people are not going fast enough to keep dry haha 😂 great video Ian.
I liked the mk6. The zetec engines were a massive step forward and make a nice noise.
Legend has it that you cannot rebore a Zetec because there are no oversize pistons available for it.....but does not really matter as they appear to be un bustable . I had a silver top 190K mile which never used a drop of oil from one service to the next.
It's time for the escort name to make a comeback!
I did have the pleasure of owning an escourt it was a dark purple one and loved it to bits
Love a Ford escort 😍
A car lovingly crafted by accountants to be inoffensive to the largest possible cross section of the car buying public! It will be interesting though, to see if it acquires more charm with passing years.
No, if ever a car was utterly devoid of anything vaguely like charm this is it. The fact that they largely all died so quickly is a mercy for us all...
They don't appear to have lasted well do they but this one is a remarkably well preserved example.
@@robinwells8879 Yes, it looks pretty good, the big problem with these was that they could look pretty decent outside and have no box sections left at the back, especially above the rear suspension...
@@robinwells8879 Agreed, it does look great
I had a ‘96’ P reg 1.8 Ghia X saloon a few years ago, as others have said I it had front heated screen it would also be a ‘sexy’ switch, is the roof switch on the same set of switches as the window switch? Think this was where boot release was on mine. And it had a rear wiper - unusual on a saloon
Didn't see any other switch near the windows, just the defunct roof switch.
HubNut think it has roof switch instead of boot switch
First?
My last car was an M reg 1.8 L diesel saloon with the oval grille (not Orion - Escort mark 5 and a half?). It cost me £250 and despite it's shortcomings I grew rather fond of it. Pretty comfortable and extremely light steering.
The mark 6 Escort looks much better (any spec). A huge improvement on the disappointing and plain looking mark 5 Escort. I think Ford's accountants had too much influence when the mark 5 was launched and hence looked undesirable when compared to the Rover R8.
@Mark Morrissey Yeah, the accelerator pedal was merely a foot operated 'go forward' switch! 😁 Very economical though.
Good that it doesn't have a fart pipe. Those things are tragic.
Agreed!
Agree. I call them arseholes.
Love this channel. Can you do a review on the Mk1/2 or 3 Ford Escort ? Thanks
still uses the handbrake at junctions, still feeds the wheel (proven unsafe might i add) when did you pass your test?
1995. I don't always feed the wheel to be honest. Depends whether my road tuition or track tuition is kicking in at that moment!
In period, I used to occasionally drive a similar age 1.8 Si Escort (the faux sporty model with white dials) for work, and actually I thought it drove OK when compared to the competition around at the time. Did a couple of long trips from London to Port Talbot in it for work, and found it perfectly competent. The late model Escorts were actually pretty decent cars - masked by the fact the incoming Focus was a bit of a game changer.
'Baboon's bottom', super comment Ian. Not a bad little car, but I am puzzled as to why older 'classic' Fords have become so expensive! The strangeness of the classic car market. Thanks again for a smasing, although damp, review.
It's just a Ford thing, older Vauxhalls haven't gone the same way. I don't know if it's just people reminiscing their youth, or if it's because Ford plays apart in clubs which keeps the interest going, or what. It's really bizarre.

My first car was a Mk5 Escort Mistral in java blue, it looked great polished up. 1.4 cvh wasn't quick but was enough power for learning in.
This was my first ever car and I absolutely loved it exactly the same
thx Ian !!
I’ve owned a few Fords and can honestly say I didn’t shed any tears parting with any of them. The final straw was my Ford Focus whose power steering pump made some alarming (and expensive) noises with less than 50,000km (30,000 miles) on the clock. The local Ford garage had me over a barrel telling me I had to spend about $3000 on a new replacement pump as the car wouldn’t get its next WOF (MOT) due in about a month. I told them if that was the case I’d park the car outside their showroom with a sign saying this car is a lemon then would take it to the wreckers when the WOF expired. A day later I got a call from them saying they’d found a second-hand power steer pump that talked to the car’s computer for a fraction of the price of a new one. Isn’t that amazing! Anyway I got shot of the car not long after that and would be happy if I never owned another Ford again. So no Ian I don’t blame you one bit for not being a lover of Fords.
Mr. Hubnut strikes again! You bloody loon! I’ve had a convertible for most of my driving life, never one with an electric hood though, so I’ve often driven in the rain having the exact same frustrations with traffic!
The Escort was a car produced from market research into what people wanted from a car. They wanted a simple car, reasonable space, easy to drive, and comfort. It gave the people what they wanted. Clever design and good handling were not requirements.
Spot on about that fusion, what exactly were they supposed to be ??
My Stepfather had one of these when I was growing up. It was a yellow Si model. Me and my brothers loved it - especially with the roof down in the summer. My Mum however, hated it. She was so embarrassed by it from the ribbing she got from her colleagues. Especially when she had to go to work in it when her car was being serviced or repaired.
loving the melted mars bar fascia!
Your a lad 'Nut boy! Love it!
I’ve always really liked the mk6 escort, to me the best feature is seen at night with the lovely floodlit instrument binnacle. I also love the curvy dashboards you got from ford in the 90s.
I wasn't keen on this model of escort. The mk3 cabriolet was a much nicer car I miss my mk3 xr31.
I get the feeling, you didn't really like this one. 😂 But to be fair I'd probably be more excited about a metro. All these soft tops are crap. 😂
Can you elaborate about soft tops being bad?
The Mk4 Escort reduced one of our Training Team at work to tears picking it up from the dealer. It was not quite what she expected. I think Ford at the time stated they spent some staggering amount of money on development, it was hard to see where it had all gone.
HubNut turns into chavnut for the day! 😀 As far as body shape goes I always liked the Mk3 Escorts, seen as classics nowadays!
They used to have a bit of an image problem but I think it has actually aged pretty well? Not a bad looking machine. Would be happy to nip around in one if one came along at the right price. Make for a fun summer car?

90s fords were great when I was a kid because if I forgot my watch you could just peer in the window and read the massive clock.

You Brits are lucky that way. Once on a visit to Yorkshire, I asked a couple of older gents at a bus stop what the charge was to get to the next town. They looked at each other and said "We don't know. We're seniors and we don't pay." Here in Canada, everybody pays. Seniors and students can get a small discount, but that's it.
A new fuel tank at 40k, that's not a great advert.
