      They were nice to drive, I disagree that the car was overrated. Of course the Focus was not marketed in the United States as a family car (like in the UK), it was marketed as a commuter car that was comfortable and got good gas mileage (which is what most folks(including myself) bought the car for). Family cars in the USA at the time were Taurus/Sable, Camry, Accord and then later SUVs. For a commuter car, it was pretty good and drove very well on the highway. We got the 2.0l engine with 136hp and the 2.3l engine with 164hp as options.

    • @glenrea

      I disagree. I had one - 1.6 Ghia with low mileage. It was gutless, uncomfortable and woefully crashy even around town. Hung onto its revs like a Leyland National. Gear change from a tractor. I put decent tyres on it as it had 4 ditchfinders when bought, even after this it still didn’t fee right or inspire me with confidence on the road. Got shot of it after a month. Perhaps I just had one made on a Friday afternoon? Worst car I’ve ever owned.

The Focus totally moved on the small family hatch game with that styling and handling, the Fiesta came good, we got the chuckable Puma and the MK1 Ka was a huge amount of fun. I still like the styling of the first-gen Focus. "New Edge" was almost as revolutionary for Ford in the U.S. as the Taurus was in 1986. The second-gen U.S. Focus was such a letdown in comparison, even after they removed the fake chrome vents from the fenders.

      Agree 100%. The first Focus was polarizing in 2000, yet didn't compromise function for the style. Much like the original Taurus. Like the Taurus, that Focus pushed the envelope in it's segment for refinement, comfort, and style. That's why I bought my yellow ZX5 that was identical to this one.
      The second gen Focus, for the US market, was beyond disappointing

    It is rather strange to see my daily driver in a HubNut video, tbh. I have a German market 2002 Focus Finesse with the 1.6 Zetec-SE (fun fact: the Zetec-SE was developed by Yamaha) and 166 k km on the clock. It has no rust, and apart from normal wear, there was never a problem. Even at 19 years old, it is still extremely fun to drive. This can't be said about many other cars. Oh, and just two weeks ago, it passed the German TÜV inspection without remarks ("ohne Mängel").

    I had a mk1 Ford Focus that looked identical: yellow five door hatch with a manual. Loved that car! Looked great, was comfortable, was fun to drive, composed, and full of smart ideas. It was perfect. I felt terrible getting rid of it in 2014 when things were starting to wear

    The mk1 Focus! Probably my favourite car of all time. I owned my first one (1.8TDDi Zetec) for 8 years (2004 to 2012), I absolutely loved that car ❤ The Millennium edition was actually based on the Zetec spec but with added toys (4 electric windows, AC and heated windscreen, leather). A clue is in the silver trim pieces, they were black in CL and LX, and wood effect in Ghia. The Zetec spec chassis is tuned to be on the sportier side whereas CL, LX and Ghia models have slightly softer suspension, which IMO makes them handle even better on the road, especially with the neglected road surfaces all over the UK.
    Unfortunately, like many Fords of the era, rust was the biggest problem the mk1 Focus had. Mine went in the rear arches, the boot lid, and the bottoms of the doors. If I could have afforded to repair the rust properly at the time, I'd probably still have that car now, which was on 209,000 miles when I let it go, but drove like it had a quarter of that.
    The TDDi had only one mechanical achillies heel - the electronic Bosch fuel injection pump, shared with the 1.7DTI Vauxhalls of the era, and some 2.5TDI Audi models. That pump is a common failure on every vehicle fitted with it.

    • @stuartjones8238
      @stuartjones8238 2 года назад +1

      Yep! Agree with everything you've said there!! Including the fuel pump. Mine (also a 1.8 TDDi Zetec) went when the wife was driving it over Salisbury Plain; she said that the dash lit up like a Christmas tree and the car stopped!! But I repaired mine, a friend of a friend that ran an independent garage managed to source a pump from someone breaking a TDDi Transit Connect; £500 all in. New Pump was £1,000 and a Ford dealer quoted £500 to fit; I believe that a lot of Mk1 TDDi's were scrapped because this.

    • @Teribus13
      @Teribus13 2 года назад

      @@stuartjones8238 yes, many TDDi variants are scrapped because of the pump. It's usually more than the car is worth to replace the pump. Mine went at a junction believe it or not. I thought I'd stalled it, but no, the pump had gone. I think I paid around £600-700 for a reconditioned pump from a diesel specialist, and fitted it myself. I paid out around £150 on various seals, a new timing belt, and other consumables for the job too. Car ran sweet after though. To be fair, it ran sweet before. Even with 209,000 on the clock, the engine was perfect - pulled well, never used any fluids, always good on diesel.

    Ah this brings back memories. When I was a child, I couldn’t see out of the windows in a Mondeo. But in the Focus I could see everything around. I had forgotten that - but you were absolutely right about the height.

      Yeah, I rememeber that as well. I used to get terribly carsick in Mondeos. I think I actually cried when my dad bought one, because I knew I was going to get carsick on every single journey. Never happened in the Galaxy or Fiesta because of how low the glass was.
      It got much better when I grew tall enough to see over the door cards. Eventually I discovered that the drivers seat of a Mondeo is the best one!

    The Focus has a special meaning to me again related to fond memories. 2 of my classmates used to live in my parents’ street. The three of us played basketball in the local competition team and practiced twice a week + match during the weekend. One week my mum, the other week the first mate’s mum and then the third week, the third mum was in charge of driving us to the sports hall and during weekends to the other team’s sportscenter on away matches.
    One mum had a Focus estate diesel and I remember it had a lot of space inside. I liked the car and even remember the smell inside. And I remember the downswept diesel exhaust tip as was mandatory for a lot of cars from that era.
    Fond memories that I miss a lot.

    I have to say, looking at the Ford Escort Mark V, I have a new appreciation for 1990-1996 Ford Escort we had in the USA. We had that style of Focus from 2000 to 2007. They "refreshed" the front end from 2005-2007. I had a 2005 Focus, It was a nice car that gave me no trouble at all for all those years I owned it. It just needed gas, regular oil changes/ services (tires, plugs, coolant) and it was good to go. I replaced it with a 2012 Fiesta in bright lime green. That was a fun little car with its manual transmission. The sunroof was so far back in the roof that it was pretty pointless for anything (except if you had back passengers) but it was a good car

    We bought a year 2000 Focus here in France, second hand in 2004. It replaced our 1994 Super Cinq. In comparison, it was like upgrading to a spaceship! Such an excellent car to own, we did lots of mileage all over France and even came to Wales twice in it. Only a couple of serious problems in the 12 years we had it. Fuel pump sensor packed up in Bristol on the way back to France. Hydraulic system leaked a few years after. Our Focus is still alive and well and is now owned by my French brother in law. He has done a few things to it... including having to change the French reg. We bought it on old French system plates. So strange to see our old car with a new reg plate. Loved that car.
