    A Plumbing van was blocking the passing lane for a few minutes(10 minutes before the start of the video) on the Interstate without giving me an opportunity to pass, so I decided to give them a courtesy call. He was going between 60-70 averaging low 60s, speed limit is 70 mph.

      He should learn the law, vans travel at 60mph on duel carriageways & cars are allowed to travel at 70mph.
      Most commercial class of vehicles must obey slower speed limits on most roads.
      It's not that they want to drive that slow, it's because they have to or face possible infringements on their licences.

      I shouldn't have to call and ask you to follow the basic rules of the road. Should I also call everytime you dont use your blinker? Or cross over solid white and yellow lines? Or how about running red lights? Or driving at night with no headlights on? Fuck you for thinking any of this is ok. Driving is an extremely serious exercise and if you cant remember the most simple of rule books(drivers handbook is 24 pages long with color illustrated pictures) then turn in your license and save us all the trouble

      @chris77777777ify i apologize for the mean comments from other people here; anyways according to US law, you must follow the speed limit, but there is also lane etiquette which is just recently starting to be enforced in some states
      lane etiquette means you must keep right except to pass, it doesnt matter how slow or fast youre going. The left lane is only a passing lane, not a fast lane or cruising lane. e.g. you could be going 150mph but if the road is clear, you must stay on the rightmost lane

      I hate it when people tailgate me even when I'm not in the passing lane. That's why I slow down way below the speed limit. It's unsafe to tailgate other cars and the laws state you have to be a certain distance away from other cars depending on how fast you're going. Rule of thumb, 40 miles means 4 cars apart.

    Last time i was a passenger in someone elses car, the driver kept camping in the passing-lane going the speed-limit. This type of thing upsets me greatly...to the point that he didnt notice the cop creeping up behind us because we were arguing about his being in the wrong lane. Cop pulled us over and asked if we knew why we were being pulled over; driver said no and i said i had an idea why we got pulled over. Driver sat there for another 10minutes and continue to argue with me AND the cop about how he was going the speed-limit and was passing trucks (mind you, this is on a freeway with 3+ lanes going in each direction). Long story short, driver got a ticket and the cop had us switch seats (so i was behind the wheel). When he went to court to fight it, he argued with the judge for nearly 20minutes before the judge threatened to find him in contempt of court and a license-suspension pending so many hours of drivers-training.

After having drove cross-country for 15 years, I've seen hundreds of these 'left lane hogs' and I'm convinced that many are unaware that they're impeding the flow of traffic and that by doing so are creating a dangerous situation... hence the reason blocking the left lane is against the law in a majority of States. A simple rule-of-thumb for highway travel that allows everyone to get to their destination comfortably is, "lead, follow or get out of the way". According to CBS news, 38 states have laws on the books to punish slow drivers squatting in the passing lane, in five of those states the fine is upwards of $1000. Let's all be safe.

A few performance cars were able to scoot around him on the right and that still never clue'd him in. How can anyone drive 15 miles and not get a clue. Against my usual "never use my horn" policy I decided it was time for the annual golden buzzer! After 15 miles a 2 mile long opening happened on the right. I was first in line, which of course means all the other cars behind me peal off in a way that cuts me off. So I'm the last one. I wait a bit longer and he still hogs the left lane, still clueless. I take my time passing him on the right with only about a 5mph gain and lay on the horn the entire time for 1/8th mile afterwards. Watching in the rear view mirror he still does not pull right until about another mile rolls by.

Some of the thoughts on it were that these groups of people are less exposed to travel in their youth and long distance driving on highways due to the cost of petrol was generally limited. Here's a simple rule which would enhance both courtesy and safety: Drive so that you never impede any other driver.

    • @jbm71
      @jbm71 4 года назад

      John Berger “Drive so that you never impede another driver” is an impossible and totally unreasonable rule to have to try to follow. Some traffic congestion is inevitable. A driver who expects others to follow such a rule is a selfish driver who thinks he’s more important than others on the road.
      Just because someone in front of you isn’t going as fast as you’d like to go, doesn’t necessarily mean that driver is “impeding” you. That driver is just traffic: he’s entitled to be on the road just like you are. Yes, that driver in front of you might be misusing a passing lane at the time, but you aren’t authorized to make that judgment; only the police can do that. You must keep your distance behind him and wait patiently for a safe opportunity to pass.
      No one is ever guaranteed to always be able to drive at the speed they’d like to travel. You must always be prepared to share the road and adjust your speed to the traffic.
      (“Drive so that you never impede another driver to whom you are required to yield right-of-way” would of course be a great rule! But a vehicle in front of you is not necessarily committing a right-of-way violation against you even if that vehicle is going slower than you want to go.)

    • @johnberger5539
      @johnberger5539 4 года назад +1

      @@jbm71 Clearly you haven't driven in Europe. Their highways have just as much traffic as ours. Yet there are few 'manufactured' traffic jams because drivers only use the 'outside' lane to pass, then move over. I've driven there in excess of 100mph many times and been passed by those doing 120mph+. Even the 120+ mph driver moves over as soon as he/she passes. It's a protocol adhered to by all drivers and the single most important reason they don't have the created highway constipation we have here.

    • @jbm71
      @jbm71 4 года назад

      John Berger Thanks for the response. Don’t get me wrong: I am totally in favor of teaching and enforcing proper lane discipline. No, I haven’t been to Europe, but I’ve seen enough discussion here of the European lane discipline habits to wish that more American drivers would learn from the Europeans how to use passing lanes properly. Yes, that would probably eliminate at least some of the traffic congestion (the “manufactured” kind, as you call it) that we experience in the US.
      However, your original suggestion to “drive so that you never impede any other driver”, worded as it is, goes much too far; it goes far beyond just following proper lane discipline. Many drivers nowadays have the attitude that they are being “impeded” whenever there’s someone in front of them going slower than they want to go and there’s no immediate opportunity to pass, even if the driver in front is doing nothing illegal or improper or even discourteous. Those impatient, “entitled” drivers who claim to “need” to go faster must learn to realize that some traffic congestion, the type caused by volume, is normal and inevitable. They need to remember that their only proper, legal response to the slower driver in front of them is to wait patiently for a safe opportunity to pass.
      Your original suggestion, saying “drive so that you never impede” as it currently does, I think just gives those “entitled” drivers even more encouragement to continue to wrongly think that slower drivers in front of them are “in their way”. Another overly-simplistic phrase I often see tossed around in these discussions by those aggressive types who love to gripe about “slow” drivers is “Lead, follow, or get out of the way.” I’ve got news for them: those slower drivers are not “in the way”; they are just traffic.

      But as the description states, if correct on speed, the driver was impeding traffic. The left lane is for passing; that means getting around the cars in the right lane and then going back into the right lane yourself. The left lane IS NOT for driving consistently, it is used for passing. By passing the others cars while going below the speed limit, you are impeding the flow of traffic, thus possibly causing backups. The funny thing is, the van sped up some when he got around the tractor-trailers (may not be correct, but it seems like it to me).
