Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They can make you headbang, they can make you pogo, they can make you cry like a baby. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and world class musicians to boot. They are currently into their 11th year with the original line up.
Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. Her idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!

Hahaha😂 A secret lab hidden within Mt. Fuji, That produces world class virtuosos that go out and conquer the world using unabashed, brutally raw talent. How freekin diabolical! I had a serious laugh at that. Thanks for that.
But really, I've got to pile a few more accolades on The Lady K. She is honestly, 150% of the bands creative core. I'm not saying that none of the others contribute. What I mean is that her creative ability and the spectrum of her ability is so vast that it is as if it is a source without limit.
She composes the music, she arranges the music, she writes the individual parts, including most of Akane's drum work. She has written drum parts that Akane has had to "Tone Down". She said she had to, because she cannot grow a third arm.
Kanami also does sound design and all of the digitally programmed sounds that are heard during the shows. These are talents that she has "picked up" and developed since joining the band. She is a musical genius, in the true sense of the word.
Band Maid has an alter ego, called Band Maiko (Johnny, I hope you read this). Miku's idea was to have the band go ultra Japanese traditional, get this, as an April fools "Gift" for their fans. Instead of the Maid outfits, fully decked out kimonos, maiko makeup, and traditional Japanese instruments.
Kanami took up the challenge. None of the girls play any traditional instruments, so Kanami created and programmed the sounds so she could play them on her guitar and/or keyboard.
Saiki (lead vocals) adopted the old Kyoto dialect when she sang for the track. (Think, Mik Jagger singing "Angie" with a thick Cockney accent.)
The song is Secret Maiko Lips. It is my favorite "Video" of theirs. Mind you, I'm not putting it in the same category as videos of their live performances, but as a "video production" it is exquisitely done.
None of the video productions can hold a candle to their live performances. Until I found Band-Maid, I'd always preferred studio recordings to recorded live performances. But these ladies are quite different, they really shine their brightest when they're live in front of their fans. I know it sounds corny, but there is an energy there that somehow ends up becoming part of the experience, for both, the fans and the band.
These are exceptionally talented ladies, and other than Miku firing herself as lead vocalist, the lineup has remained the same. And they just keep getting better and better.
A point to note; In most of their songs, there are parts that Saiki and Miku sing at the same time. But it isn't your "normal" harmonizing". Normally, in harmony, the two or more voices sing slightly differently, to produce that unique harmony sound. But Saiki and Miku's voices seem to overlap and join as one, 'Bigger' voice. The chorus' of this song, Hate?, are a good example.
Trivial Fun Facts from the Pidgeon Hole.
Miku once worked as a Maid on a Maid cafe. This is when and where she got the idea to form Band-Maid. She started watching RUclips videos and 'discovered' Konami. She wasted no time in hiring her, and that started the band. But Miku wasn't a musician. In the video that got them recognized (Thrill) Miku appears to be one of the guitarists, but she is simply holding a prop. The video producer thought two guitarists looked better than two singers.
If the "Thrill" video hadn't gotten them noticed, the band had already decided to break up. To the world's great fortune, that video went viral, and the band was saved. That was almost 11 years ago now.
Oh, and since then, Konami has taught Miku how to play the guitar.
      Po!

They started out in near-identical "battle uniforms" (as they now call it), but that idea broke down quickly as they all started designing maid-inspired dresses that suited their individual personalities. Misa (bass) quickly became the "barefoot assassin" wearing black. Saiki also went monochrome black early on. Akane on drums started to modify her battle dress to suit the physical needs of drumming (and later lost her tiny hat), while Kanami (lead guitar) and Miku (pigeon, vocalist, guitarist and former of the band) have stayed more traditional). It is also important to note that BM is NOT a studio-constructed "idol band". Miku had the idea and found Kanami playing the guitar on internet videos from home. Kanami knew Akane (the drummer) from some live sessions. Akane knew Misa (Bass) from music college. And finally, the only one who auditioned shortly after the band was almost formed is Saiki. It is important to stress since we all have ideas about "boy- and girl bands".
Welcome to the pigeonhole, Johnny. Great reaction, btw! Po! from Norway.

The maid outfits, which have evolved to mostly not be recognizable as such, have helped them stand out from the crowd but also, for some people, has been a reason to judge the book by it’s cover. Double-edged sword. 99.9% of people regret by-passing them once they finally hear them play, though!

Welcome to the BandMaid experience. The greatest proper rock and roll band of the 21st century. Here's some opinions and facts:
•Bass solos are more likely to happen than not. There's a bass solo in their first video!
•Guitar solos are shorter, far shorter than you would like them to be
•Unless you are superhuman, you will not/ can not be able to pick up everything they're doing to make that song great on the first listen.
•Genre? Genres?? We don' need no stinkin" genre!
•You like a hard rocking crazy fast tune? Well how about it done as a slower acoustic version? They do that.
    •April Fools Day 2019
As a joke they recorded a redo of Secret my Lips with traditional instruments and with lyrics in a Kyoto dialect. MV is stunningly beautiful.
•The linchpin member of the band gets the least notice/praise. The Mighty Miku Kobato founder/original lead singer steps back to make way for a new more hard rock vocalist. They want her to hold a guitar so she does and learns to play on the fly, performing all the while she's learning. So the person who willed the band into existence, who is the primary lyricist, the only member who sings and plays an instrument most of the time gets the least comments from reactors. Oh yeah she has her own signature model guitar from Zematis.
•10 plus years with the same line up. Think about that.
•More hooks, riffs and motifs in many songs than most bands have on an album. Check it out. No hyperbole.
•Use of puns, wordplay using homophones between Japanese and English are not the exception. They are typical of Kobato's lyrics.
•Despite the fact that their LIVE videos are superior to the official studio MV"s the latter are excellent. Funny, graphic, innovative and stunningly beautiful works of art describe what you get with BandMaid's official MV's.
•As close to the Beatles in terms of unique persona of the members as any group since the Monkees. MISA is quiet and drinks. Akane is happy and eats, Miku is klutzy and CUTE, Kanami is an airhead who crushes on Saiki and Saiki was the Ice Queen. But the Ice Queen has thoroughly thawed. See Yokohama's Endless Story! Their image is carefully crafted or spontaneous or both.
•Many songs have catch phrases or singalong sections to engage the audience. Many songs are in English and Japanese. Most songs are full of joy as well.
•They're having a ball. They enjoy performing. They enjoy the fans. They enjoy each other.
•Make no mistake, this is not a regular band.

This was Band-Maid's 10th anniversary tour final and they played Yokohama Arena, the largest venue they had ever played solo. Earlier in the year I saw them do a short set at an outdoor festival and a full concert at a small club, and the size of the venue doesn't phase them - they connect with the audience no matter what size. They're phenomenal and it's the Practice, Practice, Practice DIY mentality that make them that way. These ladies have a huge catalog of music that they've generated over the last ten years and they can pull any and all of it into a concert set list. They love selling out small clubs and performing 'face to face, heart to heart' interacting with the audience.
I too was initially put off by the maid outfits, but once you listen to them, you'll realize that they're not to be ignored, that they are immensely talented. The two vocalists write the lyrics. A careful listen on headphones and you'll hear the guitarist/vocalist alternately backing the bassist and lead guitar during solo/bass - guitar duel. And their drummer is fantastic, too!

"It's in the playing". YES! EXACTLY! Having that in mind, go back and watch the guitar and bass solos as an argument. An argument between the boyfriend (bass), and the girl (guitar). The bass starts the argument, the guitar answers back angrily, the bass says something snarky, the guitar mocks the bass, they go back and forth, eventually both yelling at each other at the same time, the argument ending with the guitar having the last word.

@@JohnnyReacts1to be fair, I don’t think it’s actually clear that it’s about cheating. The lyrics really just speak of a woman who hates her partner and how he’s not worth anything.
The lore of the song, based on interviews, is that lead singer Saiki wrote it on behalf of her friend whose husband cheated on her. Saiki’s friend is the non-confrontational sort, so Saiki wrote the confrontational song for her

Kanami (lead & composer), Misa (bass) and Akane (drums) all started on piano at around 4 years old. Misa played guitar, alto horn and trumpet in school and Akane the trombone. I have a suspician that Saiki may have also have played trumpet but no evidence other than 1 picture I've seen of her tooting the horn. Akane and Misa went to The Tokyo School of Music after switching to their current instruments. Kanami picked up the guitar in High School after joining a school band initially as the keyboard player. Miku (rhythm, vocals, lyrics and band founder) was initially the lead vocalist but after realising that her voice was not strong enough for this band Saiki was recruited. It was only then that Miku started learning guitar tutored by Kanami and over time has become a really good rhythm player and flling out their sound perfectly. Saiki started learning piano and guitar around covid time I think and has performed in 2 shows on piano for a couple of songs.

Oh my! You have four years of built up “po! energy” ready to go!!!
Welcome to the best thing to happen in the rock space in a generation. (And I’ve lived through a few)
“Chaotic” is exactly the style they used here. Band Maid is simultaneously progressive and aggressive, but it’s all intended to drive the fun meter off the charts.
They reinvent their maid outfits for each new year, with these being the most recent.
Not only are they phenomenal musicians, but they are incredibly sincere and sweet ladies. It’s easy to root for them.
As mentioned, the chaotic style is one facet; however, Band Maid has cemented themselves as musical shapeshifters with no egos or fear with songwriting. You have several paths to choose from as you load up song #2.
    Arena pop rock: “Domination,” LIVE
Hair metal with a 🎀 “DICE,” OMV
Metal instrumental: “From Now On,” OMV
Progressive, cinematic rock: “Puzzle,” official LIVE
Alt rock: “The non-fiction days,” OMV
    Punk progressive: “Blooming,” OMV
More chaos and thunderous drums? “Warning!” OMV
These are only a few examples. They also have released thrash metal, funk rock, and even heart wrenching ballads. This band is an important creative force

The girl you didn't get to see much of is Miku. She founded the band and was the original lead singer, however, she felt her voice wasn't powerful enough so they brought in Saiki. A thing about the maid outfits, John: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!

BabyMetal is a Manufactured Band. It was started as a label vehicle for SuMetal. BAND-MAID form organically. Founder Miku was actually working in a Maid Cafe when she got the idea, and she parleyed her success in an idol competition into a shot to put together her dream, BAND-MAID. She found songwriter and lead guitarist Kanami online making guitar videos. Kanami knew drummer Akane though work on previous projects. Akane knew MISA from attending the Tokyo School of Music together. The only member that came through their agency was lead vocalist Saiki. And at any time any one of these member might have said no, and a couple of them certainly thought about it. A band of Maids? Luckily for us they stuck it out and attained success that just keeps growing. This concert was the finale of their 10 Year Anniversary Tour. They have well over one hundred songs and counting spanning many genres. Dive deep into the Pigeon Hole! And speaking of the band's founder and spoke-pigeon. She always wanted duel vocalists, and her high pitched voice wasn't quite what she envisioned for a band of hard rocking maids. So she stepped back into the secondary vocal position and found Saiki for lead vocals. And when they needed a second guitar, rather than hire a sixth member, she learned to play guitar and sing at the same time, all while in a working band. She is a bundle of limitless energy who wouldn't let anything get in the way of her dream, not even herself. She also write most of the lyric, but not this song. Saiki wrote 'Hate?'. She just loved the way the English words, I Hate You, sounded.

Thank you for the reaction. Some years ago I was searching for material from Scandal, an all female group from Osaka, when the MV for Manners by Band Maid was being suggested. I gave it a try and my musical journey started with maids and it is still going on. As they change so do I, and as good as they are on the instruments, as great as they are as vocalists, what stands out to me is the way they compose music. From Daydreaming to Black Hole, Wonderland to Rinne or Corallium to Memorable, I can listen to their music again and again and discover something new and interesting as well as they are not bound to a specific style of music. The costumes are obvious to me as manga and anime often play on a contradiction with the expected innocence of household staff instead being all sorts of powerful and dangerous characters so maids playing some kind of hard rock, it is just natural.
The RUclips channel Ohrenje has documentaries on each of the band members. These are very good and are being updated so one wants to pick the latest version. Now some of these plays music by the band and can therefore be a bit of spoiler to a reactor but some go ahead anyway. At some point in time you may find them intersting. Have fun! :)

Welcome Masters and Princesses to the best rock band on the planet. These beautiful ladies are in their early 30s now and have been rocking for 10 years with plenty of Solo work from Misa (bass) and Kanami (lead). Drum fills and solos from Akane are killer. The great thing is they always look so happy with great interactions with their fans. They will come for your soul.
Thrill the track that blew them up on the world stage, after a slow start it suddenly went viral outside of Japan after being shown on Facebook (this happened in 2015), some of my favourite tracks are Play, Domination, Don’t You Tell Me, Dice, Freedom, Onset, From now on, Without Holding Back, Hate? and Bestie.
    The 5 Band-Maid members:
SAIKI Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. The youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. She’s into train spotting and collecting trainers. Very girly, into doing her nails and is a fashion icon. She’s really into Baseball and the Hanshin Tigers. Don't mess with her you will lose. But she has a heart of gold and a killer dry sense of humour. She has recently started writing lyrics.
MIKU Kobato (Me-Ku), "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals and lyricist. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR Spokes Pigeon. She was originally going to sing vocals but stepped back for Saiki and learnt guitar instead, she couldn’t play when she formed the band and was initially tutored by Kanami. Miku's new signature Zemaitis guitar has pigeons on the fret board. The “Flappy Pigeon” is a beautiful model. Miku claims to be an 810 year old pigeon and makes pigeon noises when she speaks. Po! She’s very good at poker, really into horses and horse racing. Very clumsy (may fall into ditches). Has the energy of an average nuclear power station mixed with weapons grade cuteness? A comedian onstage - literally! She is the heart and soul of the band.
KANAMI Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want is more! Kanami plays a PRS; the birds on the fret board are a tribute to Paul Reed Smith's mum who was an avid birdwatcher. Kanami has two personas. Normally a tiny cute shy very polite lady who seems very innocent (the band have to explain dirty jokes to her) until she puts on her guitar. The band say: "then she gets quite violent" - she turns into the shredding rock star she is. When she takes guitar off she turns back to the little girl. She likes cakes, coffee and is totally infatuated by Saiki. She adores Saiki very much, to everyone's amusement.
AKANE Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during a performance!) rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. She usually has a big grin on her face while drumming manically, Akane was also a DJ (under the name DJ Achi) and likes dancing and goofing with MISA. She also plays trombone!
MISA (Me-Sa), "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. Misa usually plays a Black Cloud 5 string bass aka “Black Smoker”. MISA is very shy onstage (and a total clown offstage with Akane). Because of her shyness she often drinks onstage, you can often spot a bottle of Jim Beam on her amp. She drinks it neat. Lately she’s been drinking more beer than whiskey though, good girl. Doesn't say much, but when she does it's usually totally hilarious! At a lot of concerts you will hear the fans chanting MISA! MISA! MISA!
Their Battle Gear as they call it with slight variations are standard French maid outfits for Akane, Miku and Kanami, MISA ditched the French maid outfit early on and started to wear a Chinese inspired maid outfit - in black of course. It's partly how MISA got her nickname 'The Barefoot Assassin'. Well, she always plays barefoot, and Miku joked her outfit was an “assassin maid”. Saiki's outfit is more Spanish inspired.
Any Maids track always ROCKS and they have an extensive back catalogue (130+ tracks). They are all so different and are all great tracks.

That said, before you go back to their beginning, which you should, I recommend going to the last song of this show, which is Endless Story Official Live on their channel. You just listened to the greatest band on the planet. As far as the maid outfits go, the founder of the band (rhythm guitarist, back singer, Miku Kobato) was a Maid at a Maid Cafe and wanted to contrast the “cuteness’ of the outfits with the hard rocking style. Besides, how many gimmicks in entertainment going all the way back to KISS and other bands are there? I love the maid look (I’m just like any other guy) but that is quickly overshadowed by the ACTUAL talent of these lovely ladies. And another thing, each member has their own look now as the band evolved. The lead singer Saiki is like a Queen of the maids, nickname Ice Queen. The bassist, MISA, is the barefoot assassin and wears the long black outfit. You just opened a pigeon-hole and you won’t regret. (Not a ‘rabbit hole, Miku is known as ‘Lil Pigeon’ so being taken in by BAND MAID is going down the pigeon hole, not a rabbit hole.) Anyways, look forward to your next band maid reaction. Try ‘Moratorium’ or for a contrast “Bestie’…..which talks about their love for each other as opposed to Hate?, which is a kick ass song. I LOVE BAND MAID ❤❤

Discovered them in 2019 and they have become one of my favorite bands. Been lucky enough to see them a few times in concert when they came to the USA. I like the way their, as they call them, "battle uniforms" have evolved over the years. Miku (back up singer and rhythm guitar player) started the band and used to work in a maid cafe in Japan. Her idea to dress as maids to make people think they would play cutesy Jpop music and then they hit you with this rock music (that is called "The Gap"). She never played guitar before and Kanami (lead guitarist) is her teacher. Miku was supposed to be lead singer but didn't think her voice was strong enough to sing the types of songs she wanted the band to play so they found and hired Saiki as the lead singer.

I honestly love the femininity of the maid outfits. Even when they were younger, the dresses were far more demure than the attire of Western women in pop and rock. Personally I find it time for that biker skank look popularized by Lita Ford, Vixen, and others to die. 👍 In the end it's like you said, once they start playing, you don't even notice what they're wearing.

I must've been a fan of Band-Maid for oh, 9 or 10 years by now. I used to watch Babymetal, and so Thrill, this lots very first music video was suggested. After several times I gave it a shot, then I went to their channel and they had maybe half a dozen song back then. So I listened to them all, and been a fan ever since.

Ahh, this explains why I didn't get a Babymetal reaction recommendation from your channel or a post on the fan forum, you were so consistent with those.

You won't often see solos by Miku, the rhythm guitar and background singer, because she's not at the same level as the lead guitar, bass, or drummer. Miku started the band, and came up with the concept of the maid theme. She had worked in a maid cafe and thought to juxtapose cute maids doing seriously hard rock. She was originally going to be the singer, but her voice didn't have the punch needed for these songs. So they got Saiki to sing, and Miku picked up a guitar for the first time. She's much better than in their early days, but miles behind Kaname, the lead guitarist. Her sweet voice is great for harmonies and background vocals. And she writes most of the lyrics for their songs (Saiki wrote them for this one)

You will see more of Miku (rhythm guitar and 2nd vocals) as you continue your journey 😉 She formed the band and found Kanami…and then Kanami taught her to play guitar when Miku decided that her voice was not best suited to their musical style….

Its great watching a man being changed forever and the best thing is they have well over 100 songs so you can do it again and again. For something heavier but still all girl and Japanese check out NEMOPHILA. Try their song AMA-TE-RAS or Rise. For more rock rather than metal similar to BAND-MAID Try the Korean all girl band Rolling Quartz.

Another great band. I'm hopelessly in love with Saiki the singer. Adorable. But these ladies are incredible. That said I don't like this song as much as alot of their stuff. The last half is amazing tho. ❤ domination and thrill are my favorites so far personally. Wait til your hear Lovebites. And nemophila. 😂

@@JohnnyReacts1 You defiantly should get to gigs, I hadn't been to a gig in over 10 years after being diagnosed with some health issues that can make life very painful and going out a bit scary and then last October I went to see a band I love but have never seen (Rodrigo y Gabriella, 2 Mexican guitarists). and since then I've got back into going to every gig I fancy, I'm coming up 56 and intend to enjoy my somewhat later years and amongst others I've seen Robert Plant for the first time since Glastonbury 97 when I last saw him with Mr Page and this week I saw Nick Masons Saucerful of Secrets for the first time since I saw Floyd in 88. Look how much you enjoyed Fox Fest and your vlog on it was far better than most.

That's a filter, man. That's why BAND-MAID fandom is so wonderful even after 10 years. BAND-MAID doesn't need some random people to follow them. The outfits ward off those who are full of superstitions. Those who don't believe women can play, those who believe that rock music is only in the West... BAND-MAID wants to dominate the world, but their army are the hosts of open-mindedness, of love and good will. And the general of this army is a Pigeon, not a Hawk 🕊️

  • @tommyjohnson9175
    @tommyjohnson9175 5 месяцев назад

The maid outfits have evolved over time. They started out with outfits very similar to the traditional Japanese Maid Cafe outfits. Miku (backing vocals/rhythm guitar/Band founder) is the main member still wearing the traditional style uniform, she worked in a Maid Cafe for a time before she organized Band Maid. The others now adays are more "Maid Inspired" style uniforms, with a little Chinese maid influence... others with some Spanish Matre'd type influence. But, it's not the uniforms bringing them attention and fans from around the world...

I really enjoyed your reaction, Johnny! I added some time stamps to a few of your comments:
2:03 “There must be something more [to them] than just costumes.”
    [Ya think?]
    2:32 [Hate? Video starts]
    2:37 “Nice!”
    2:42 “Wow!”
    4:07 “Wow!”
    4:56 “Wow!”
    5:24 “Wow”**
    6:12 “Wow!”
    6:46 “Wow!”
    6:54 “Wow!”
    7:40 “Wow!”
    8:40. “Wow!”
**An argument can be made that this was really a “Woo!” and not a ”Wow.”
Based upon nine “wows” in a single reaction to one song I think you qualify for instant MAIDIAC status! Welcome to the pigeon hole, Master Johnny!
    More BAND-MAID please!
