From a military fortifications standpoint, it’s a very bad idea because it provides cover for the enemy. The star fort design Fort Independence is based on is engineered to provide firing lanes from the parapets to any area at the base of the wall or bastion. This means an enemy has nowhere to amass for an assault or plant explosives in safety. Putting shacks up outside of the walls creates blind spots and makes an assault on the fortifications easier.
A great build. Love the idea of a thriving community existing around the security of the fortress; reminds me a good deal of medieval Europe, with sprawling villages surrounding castles. Also, the aesthetic of the Castle is very presidential: lush greenery, clean, very calm and safe. I wager that if a soldier or two were to be sent to the Castle to receive a commendation or medal for bravery in battle, they’d be wowed by the sight of flowers and trees.
In future builds, Kort might consider using the Build High- Expanded settlements mod by Themon. This expands the build area around the castle significantly. To address the valid lore friendly objections that the Minutemen would object to structures directly adjacent the castle walls which could be used for cover, another mod to consider is Ragoda's Stay at Home Bundle #1 of settlements, which has Ivan's Diner Settlement- the Diner that is used for Castle mortar fire practice. This would allow the sort of ragtag makeshift structures that sprang up near, but not directly outside castles in the first dark ages.
he's done a really good job at making fanciness in the wasteland seem realistic! the settlement outside and the shack bits here and there really throw it all together :)
This is by far the best castle build I’ve ever seen. I’ve been playing on and off since the game launched and have hundreds of hours in it. When I’m actively playing I tend to watch content on the game when I’m not in game so I’ve seen countless builds of all locations and this castle build is definitely in its own tier. The creativity using the outside walls and stuff plus the docks… bravo!
The town outside is actually fairly historically and practically correct; generally. I'm not sure if its specifically accurate for Fort Independence; but from what i understand, fortifications often did have sub-communities that often supported the personnel of the fort. Not to mention, the way you laid everything out is super immersive and creative. Honestly it really looks like how something like that would naturally pop up over time.
Communities like that were never immediately outside of the fort walls, though. Those areas were kept clear of structures and trees so the defenders would have clear lines of fire.
Of all the settlement builds i have ever seen, i love this one the most. Less is better, beautiful job. I think it reflects what would be in this situation better than most. Great Job!
Man you nailed this. I love watching tour videos because I see so many good uses for different objects other than the obvious use. I'm currently on a zombie apocalypse survival playthrough (mod that turns all enemies into feral ghouls) so I'm building to that theme and each settlement is some kind of business instead of a settlement. Except for spectacle island which has a massive prison on it.
I have seen so many castle builds for fallout 4 and this is by far the most amazing one and only one i've seen that's perfect. I want to build it myself now. If you have a mod for others to use this build i'd love to use it.
Absolutely awesome build. As always the detail is amazing, like the bush trim on top, love it. Absolutely love the whole dock/piers all around the castle. Such a great idea and looks amazing. Also love ur stories and back stories, so creative and fun. Thanx so much for sharing, great job. Hope u have a very Merry Christmas. Take care, Peace
One thing that always bothered me with the settlements is that alot of it you cant clean or repair, so we always have dirty floors, some ummovable trash, broken windows... it would be nice if with time the settlers repaired and cleaned the place to show some appreciation or evolution of the society idk
Nice work. I have plans to make a dock area at The Castle and other coastal settlements. I wanted, in my head canon, to make merchant trader ships that travel up and down the coast. Buying, selling and providing services. I liked the idea of having their shops on the back of the boat, even have them living on it.
great build; I’m glad to see you have a following. The music really adds to the ambience, and it’s very functional for its military purpose while still feeling a great deal more comfortable than what I’m used to in the base game. Nice to see it populated as well. Keep up the good work and I subscribed.
I wish Bethesda would create a true clean-sheet v2.0 of the game, fixing all the bugs, but more importantly, adding the ability to focus on world-building - as seen here, but without endless mods, all while keeping all the same "blowing sh*t up" functions. Pretty sure that virtually everyone who has the current version would step up; I know I would.
If you got some mats that have activities for settlers to do then they'd be out there...like a fishing mod that has a fishing chair and production area...there's also a mod with dynamic mats and more that have mats you can place for activities...like children drawing on the sidewalk...things like that.
Now that's a fully realized build! The docks and outside surroundings especially. Just some questions: why is there not at least a shack built around the radio pole in the middle to keep the operator out of the sun and weather? Perhaps even a small bunker, seeing how that high powered radio is one of the most valuable assets of the Minutemen. And the logistics of this fort would have greatly benefited from one or two cranes on the walls, in order to get heavier cargo and materials up and over the walls. Also, there's a pretty must-have mod on PC which allows you to delete almost every element within a building area, allowing you to remove a lot of rubble and flatten out the floor on the walls by removing the earth there. I recommend to use it! Also there's a settlement expansion mod which gives you full access to the area in front of the castle up until the houses, which would be well suited for extensive training grounds and such. I'd say a military base would have great use for that!
If you’re going for realism (as you claim in the video title), I’d avoid trees obscuring fields of fire from the parapets and putting structures which can be used as cover up against the walls. Fort Independence is a star fort design, meaning it was carefully engineered to provide a firing lane to every area at the base of a wall. There’s not a single blind spot. If an enemy is up against a wall, he can be shot from a bastion. If an enemy is up against a bastion, he can be shot from a wall or another bastion. Putting shacks up against the wall creates blind spots and cover where enemies can amass for an assault and/or plant explosives to breach the wall.
I too feel the Commonwealth Minutemen benefit from two tiers of Minutemen. You’ve the Minutemen Militia, the semi organized Auxiliary of local volunteers ready to muster at a moment’s notice from their settlements, with whatever gear and weapons they may have. Then you’ve the Minutemen Army Regulars, the Commonwealth’s standing Army. Full time Volunteers trained, organized and equipped to Patrol the Commonwealth, escort Caravans, garrison checkpoints and Watchposts, and all around fight to clear the Commonwealth of Raiders, hostile Scavengers, Mutants and so on. This way, the Minutemen have both a standing fighting force, but also maintain the Citizen Militia Spirit.
Merry Christmas! I have to say, I think this is the best build yet. One thing though: the radio antenna in the middle of the courtyard just looks a little off to me. I would say you should build some sort of structure around it. Other than that, great build!
Merry Christmas mate! This is also my favourite build so far. I did experiment with a build around the radio tower but i wanted the courtyard to feel very open, I decided to scrap the build and thought that the wires and tress would give enough support and shade. Thanks for your feedback :)
There's a mod I use that removes the rubble and fixes the wall for the castle...think it's called 'castle walls repaired inside and out. It's totally all fixed as if it never was broken. one comes with grass on top and one without grass.
Incredible work. I always build these 3 story apartments in the courtyard. They’re flush to the walls with the 3rd floors being accessed on the top wall.
23:26 Why would you let them place the coffee machine on the priceless antique mahogany table? They're gonna ruin it! jk, lovely build 👍 I wish I had enough patience to be as good as you at decorating!
The Build High- Expanded settlements mod by Themon will expand the build area around the castle significantly- out to the buildings beyond Ivan's diner, to address the valid military observation that structures directly outside the walls would provide cover for attackers. If there are concerna about blowing the settlement object budget, you can use a separate settlement- Ivan's Diner from Ragoda's Stay at Home Bundle #1 of settlements. That said, respecting such tactical details cannot undo the fundamental flaw of Fort Independence. It would be stupid of the Minutement to investment in such forts which have been obsolete since the 19th century and the advent of heavy artillery. Walls like that are pointless given that Fat Boys would easily annihilate them, and any Minuteman general ought to have figured that out in the first 5 minutes of inspecting the site. An underground site like the switchboard or using the reconnected subway system as in the Frost mod makes MUCH more sense.
Got to do something with this settlement one of this days. I'll probably expand vertically to make use of the base walls as the first level. Also saw some concept art for it and it was way better than what bethesda left in. You put out videos fast, bro! Did you have many of this built before starting the channel or are you just prolific with your building pace?

Wow, just stunning! I wish I could do something like this but on Ps5 no chance whatever. Regarding the Minutemen not being a faction; how would the naysayers interpret the word “faction “? Surely a faction is a group with a political sociological agenda? The Minutemen have that, they want to govern by the people for the people not be told they are too stupid to use technology, too flawed as humans to be allowed to exist as they are and must be “humankind redesigned “ . Whether you believe in their philosophy or not you can’t claim that they aren’t a faction.
I've never thought to build any assets outside the castle walls, this adds a whole new dimension to the build.👍
Glad i could inspire a new way of building at the castle :)
My thoughts exactly!
From a military fortifications standpoint, it’s a very bad idea because it provides cover for the enemy. General Dave/Evil Viking still has one of the top Castle tours and has put out mods for Fallout 4 for nearly a decade.
SirBalz has the best castle, no question. That doesn’t mean all others are bad, it’s just too good

Ok, where did you get the geko skin rug for the Generals Quarters, and was that provisioner a grumpy Marcy?

To me, you’ve made The Castle to the Minutemen the equivalent to Camp Golf for the NCR Rangers in Fallout: New Vegas.
Nice!
